(Photo: John Lill) Mötley Crüe are synonymous with debauchery and excess. On Friday night they lived up to that reputation with showmanship that had a sold-out Tacoma Dome “Shouting at the Devil” well into the night. Special guest Alice Cooper opened the evening, and the godfather of shock-rock delivered the goods. A bit of w choose Cooper as an opening act at your own risk. With four decades of performing under his belt, Cooper still have inspired many performers throughout the years. Surely Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson owe part of their shock-rocker. Cooper has never posed as a sex symbol or taken himself as seriously as the Crue. He’s always been a horror fi in a magnificent shroud of hooks and power chords. Still in fine voice at age 67, Cooper commanded the stage w crutch like a bayonet, and stroking a live boa constrictor wrapped around his neck during “Welcome to My Nightm were there too; the straightjacket, the gurney, the guillotine that chops off his head and even Frankenstein. Cooper has a magnetism that simply demands attention, and the crowd was mesmerized as he and his rockin b out) ran through note-perfect versions of “Department of Youth,” “No More Mr Nice Guy,” “Poison,” and “Welcom by accident, and every vocal inflection, hand gesture, prop change or explosion was used to accentuate rather th much so, that even the most over-the-top theatrical moments like the sparking contraption that turned Cooper in Frankenstein” seemed completely appropriate. Cooper’s set was a testament to the one thing that often gets lost when discussing his legacy as a performer – t great rock songs. Closing with the iconic “Schools Out” (complete with a section of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”), Co theatrical and entertaining rock shows around. As “So Long, Farewell” (from “The Sound of Music”) bled out from the speakers, Mötley Crüe took the stage lo stars they are, launching immediately into a spirited opening trifecta of “Girls,Girls,Girls,” “Wild Side,” and “Prima memorable two-hour journey through their back catalog of classic rock radio staples. As vocalist Vince Neil prowled the stage and Mick Mars kept the riffs coming, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee lived entertaining the crowd with a variety of antics as they moved through killer versions of “Looks that Kill,” “Smokin’ Love.” Featuring more pyro than a Kiss concert, an endless array of pyrotechnics, fire and confetti brought a sense of b particular wall-of-fire effect early in the show had people looking around to determine the nearest exit, but soon part of the show. Lee remains a hard-hitter. His nearly nine minute mid-set solo (performed upside down from aboard his roller co Crucify”), proved to be one of the night’s most memorable performances. Only Lee would dare combine perform Beastie Boys, Rage Against the Machine, and various techno hits along with Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick” into but it worked magnificently. Certainly, it wouldn’t be a Mötley Crüe show without some skin. The scantily clad backing singers that accompan factor. They also provided cover on high notes that Neil can no longer reach. Of course, everybody knew “Home Sweet Home” would be the last song Motley Crue would perform on their far anticipation. With smoke from the pyro still hanging in the air, the group marched through the crowd to a smaller Dome, carrying large flashlights with beams that cut through the thick air. As the small stage rose up towards the the band soaked in the love from the crowd. It actually succeeded in being a real moment, rather than a calculat As the foursome walked off to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” with a skip in their step and plenty of high fives from the dramatic and tasteful effect, and a nice way to show camaraderie with the fans. Let’s just hope they don’t give A early.
