Lipizzaner Stud Farm
The Lipizzaner stud farm in Piber is the
nursery for the world famous horses
from the Spanish riding school in Vienna.
I
n 1920 after the First World War in
Austria the remaining prized herds of
Lipizzaner horses were transferred to the
imperial stud farm in Piber. The breeding
of Lipizzaner builds on previous practice of
the former imperial stud farm Lipica and still
follows the old methods of breeding.
T
he ‘mothers’ stud farm‘ houses around
75 mother mares, horses in training
and used for presentation and events at the
stud farm, stallions from the Spanish riding
school and those stallions and mares who
due to age are enjoying their well-deserved
retirement. The herd of Lipizzaner in Piber
is divided into the six classic breeds of stallions: Maestoso, Pluto, Favory, Neapolitano,
Conversano and Siglavy as well as all of
the fifteens breeds of mares still available,
making us unique in the world!
T
he baroque castle was built between
1696 and 1716 by Benedictine monks as

a type of priory. The unique acoustics in
the arcade three storey courtyard make
weddings and concerts a special experience. On the top floor next to the administration there are also rooms which can be
hired for events.
A
nnually more than 30 Lipizzaner foals
first see the light of day under the care
of their mothers. You can watch the nosey
and fun friends for hours on end as they
play-fight for the hierarchy in the nursery.
W
ith a guided tour around the stud farm
you will learn interesting details about
the day to day running of the stud farm and
the keeping of the noble horses from horse
experts. You can prove yourself as a great
team driver in the carriage simulator and
look over the shoulder of the blacksmith as
he goes about his work in the show smithy.
In the historical riding hall you will get a
glimpse of the daily work of the riding and
carriage departments. You can experience
the Lipizzaner horses in action at the many
events in the arena with visitors’ grandstand
with 1500 seats.

Lipizzaner summer meadows
Stubalm
Lipizzaner summer meadows
T
he one to three year old young animals
spend the summer months on mountain
pastures 1,500m above sea level; the mares
on the Prentlalm and the stallions on the
Stubalm. This time on the mountain pastures is an important part of breeding of the
Lipizzaner horses. Due to the partly steep
and stony hillside of the pastures the horses
gain the necessary surefootedness and train
their sinews and joints.
To the Lipizzaner summer meadows!
Package bookable from June until mid
September:
Guided tour with an insight into the daily life
of the stud farm. Followed by a trip by private coach to see the young mares at Stubalm
(about 15km away). There you will be met by
a horse expert and you will experience the
breeding and grazing of the young horses up
close. Length including travelling time to the
mountains is approximately 2½ hrs.
Price per person €14.50.
Tour guide and bus driver are free of charge.

St. Barbara’s Church
O
ne of the biggest attractions of
Lipizzanerheimat is St. Barbara’s
church in Bärnbach, a colourful, jolly
and positive place of worship. The
church was built in the fifties and between the years 1987/88 was redesigned by FriedensreichHundertwasser
into a piece of art which has been
famous ever since.
T
he tower, the roof, the facades, the
golden ‘bulb‘ and the golden balls
are varied and are rich in shape and
colour. With the designing of the twelve
towers, which represent all of the world
religions and carry the respective symbols, Hundertwasser made a gesture of
ecumenism and of dialogue of all
confession and tolerance.

by
Prof. Ernst Fuchs
C5
Bärnbach
T
he Moses Fountain designed by
Professor Ernst Fuchs is a special
work of art and alongside the Hundertwasser church it is another attraction
in Lipizzanerheimat. The Moses
Fountain is also a biblical art work and
supplemental to the Hundertwasser
church.
T
he fountain features about
144,000 glass mosaic tiles and
420,000 pebbles. The unique fountain
is the surround for the bronzed coated
Moses statue and the central point
of the Bärnbach town park. Here you

tiles, which portray proverbs, were

artist Professor ArikBrauer.In the top

M.Lankowitz’s Pilgrimage Church
C4
he church with a baroque style high
altar, miraculous Madonna treasury
and Antonius chapel is the jewel of this
pilgrimage destination in the Lipizzanerheimat. Maria Lankowitz is widely
known for rogation processions and pilgrimages. The most famous pilgrimage
on foot is one for shelter, where people
have been making the pilgrimage over
the Stubalpe to Maria Lankowitz annually since 1690.
threw the naked statue into
a bush, where she lay for
seven years undetected.
n 1433 as a shepherd
looked for his oxen which
had ran off, he found them
kneeling in front of the
bush in which the forgotten statue of the Virgin
Mary lay. After many failed
attempts to take the statue
back to Warth, the priest
advised they should put the
statue into the oxen cart
and to let the animals take
it wherever they wanted. Without taking
any feed they went along a path for days
on end which finally led to Maria Lankowitz. In the current church yard, where
even then a large lime tree stood, the
animals stood still and couldn’t be moved
on any further. In this was the proof that
the Mother of God had chosen her home
herself. 1433 is therefore considered the
founding year of the pilgrimage church of
Maria Lankowitz.
The history of the church:
Maria Lankowitz Castle
n the parish church of Warth, Turks
stole all of the church treasures in
1426, including the miraculous Madonna picture of the Mother of God, which
had always been adored. The thieves
n the castle, built in 1440, 600 years of
Maria Lankowitz’s history are presented
in a lovingly designed museum. Additionally, regular exhibitions by artists from
the area under the name “Art in the Castle” are catching on.
