ACTIVITY REPORT CAMPAIGN
Pierre Francotte / President
2014-2015
Dear Friends of UFB,
As you glance through this report, I hope
you’ll take a moment to take in what’s
really between its page - lives changed for the better - and
know that you are part of someone’s success. The warm
meal, the job training, the basic mobility, the strength
it took for someone to regroup and rebuild. Whether a
partner association, donor, sponsor, or a friend of UFB,
you’re part of that.
All across Belgium, there are children and adults who
face profound obstacles every day in achieving basic
levels of stability, independence and well-being. These
are social concerns that ultimately impact us all. But the
challenges are not inevitable, nor are they intractable.
Since our founding in 1972, United Fund for Belgium has
helped tens of thousands of these most vulnerable, by
bringing together resources, opportunity and hope to
underserved communities. This year was no exception.
A few of the achievements are highlighted here. There
are many more. We credit these many successes to
you, our generous partners and supporters who help
underprivileged children and adults to grow healthier,
learn more, and become better prepared to realize their
dreams. Our heartfelt thanks go to each of you who share
our vision for an inclusive society in Belgium.
This work takes resources. 87 programs focused on 4
key areas - aid to disabled people, child welfare, fighting
poverty and social integration - benefitted from United
Fund for Belgium’s support this year. Our 2014-2015
campaign raised once more about € 700,000 and we are
proud to report that we continue our exceptional spending
record, with 100% percent of these funds going directly
into programs.
Your steadfast commitment to bettering the lives of those
in our community inspires us to pursue even greater
achievements in our 2015-2016 campaign. With your help,
we are working to ensure that more people in Belgium
have better, richer lives.
We look forward to our continued partnership.
Thank you.

Vincent Bonnot
EMEA CFO at International Paper
A Relationship Comes Full Circle
If you’ve ever driven down the Chaussée de La Hulpe in Brussels, you may have noticed a
striking stone building that forms a perfect circle. This
circle, with no beginning or end, is not only the EMEA
headquarters of International Paper, but also a symbol of a rather special union that first began more than
twenty-five years ago.
International Paper joined up with United Fund for Belgium in 1989. Today, it is one of UFB’s largest corporate
sponsors. What really makes the company remarkable
is not only the size of its donations (large in proportion to the number of local employees), but the fact that
their relationship with UFB has blossomed into an integral part of their company culture and corporate social
responsibility efforts.
Just ask EMEA CFO Vincent Bonnot, who was tapped to
head up the UFB campaign this past year. “What was
perhaps a simple corporate gifting initiative in the beginning is now a program that has come full circle and
brings so much back to us,” he said. “We look forward
to the campaign each year. A wide range of events gives
us a great way to get everyone together and get to know
colleagues in other areas of the business. It helps
make International Paper a great place to work, and
reinforces our close relationship with the local Belgian
community.”
Each year, International Paper selects a different department to lead the effort. Vincent elaborated, “My
group began planning over the summer. The actual
events lasted several months, culminating in December at a year-end holiday party and silent auction.
Prior successes are emulated, but there is always the
intrigue of coming up with something new and original
too. It’s a part of the fun.”
There is something for everyone. Breakfasts, movie
screenings, “Jeans Day”Fridays, and karaoke parties
are all part of the mix. This year, Vincent’s team added
a day of direct involvement with one of UFB’s partner
charities, painting walls and furniture for a therapeutic
riding center. “It was a great day,” Vincent said.
Vincent continued, “Working directly with a charity this
year was a perfect way for us to really come together
and do something special. Our team could see the results and felt a clear sense of satisfaction in a job well
done.”
2
“Partnering with UFB allows us to do so much more
than write a corporate check,” Vincent added. “They
share our vision. UFB has very stringent criteria about
which projects they support, and they support more
than eighty projects all across Belgium year after year.
Moreover, 100% of our employee contributions, plus
International Paper’s corporate match, goes directly to
the charities. This is unique. It gives us a high degree of
confidence our donations will end up in the right place.”
Which event is Vincent’s own personal favorite? “Karaoke”, he replies without missing a beat. And as a wry
smile spread across his face, he adds, “But I’m afraid
last year’s video has disappeared without a trace.“
International Paper, a global paper and packaging manufacturer, is one of the companies in Belgium supporting the UFB through organizing in-house fundraising
campaigns. The company, with just over 75 employees
in Brussels, has been a gold or platinum donor several
years running.
Marie-Pierre Galler
Export Manager at Galler Chocolatier
A Sponsorship with Taste
Marie-Pierre Galler, Export Manager
at Galler Chocolatier, is a very busy
professional. But between two business trips abroad,
she still found time for a meeting in January 2015 to
prepare United Fund for Belgium’s Easter egg campaign. For the third year in a row, UFB has had the
privilege to offer several assortments of Galler Easter
eggs for sale to our corporate and individual donors,
with the proceeds going directly to our campaign.
What drives Galler to support charities such as UFB?
Marie-Pierre explains. “Galler is a family business,
founded by my uncle Jean, who is still the chairman
of our company. He succeeded in creating a strong
consensus among Galler employees around the basic
values that are dear to him: quality, creativity, competence and motivation, use of Belgian chocolate (of
course!), but also ethics. Ethics drives our way of doing business, and part of this is our desire to share the
success of the company with those who, for whatever
reason, are faced with setbacks in life.”
We at UFB are very grateful to have been selected by
Galler as one of the vehicles for this corporate commitment, and look forward, together with our loyal “customers,” to Easter 2016!

A RALLY WITH CELEBRITIES SUPPORTS 5 CHARITIES
Saturday 20 September 2014 saw the first edition of the
oldtimer “Pilotes du Coeur” rally, featuring a relaxed
atmosphere, some exceptional locations and bright
sunshine.
This rally was set up by Racingold and its media partner
Ciné Télé Revue in cooperation with United Fund for
Belgium to support five charities; it aimed at gathering
oldtimer car fans around one purpose: to complete a
nice drive (and have some fun in the process) in order
to collect as many donations as possible on behalf of
each charity.
This objective was achieved!
The very engaged participants managed to raise no
less than €38,000, which were distributed among the
charities: Ingénieurs sans Frontières, Maison d’Enfants
Reine Marie Henriette, Tanderuis, Rotonde and Arche
de Marie.
Congratulations to all “Pilotes du Cœur“ drivers for
their commitment, and a special word of thanks to the
celebrities who “played the game” the whole emotionfilled day: Jonathan, Kevin et Olivia Borlée, Julie Taton,
Sandrine Dans et Laurence Langen (Miss Belgium
2014).
See you on 19 September 2015 for the next edition...

KICK-OFF AT THE RESIDENCE OF THE AMERICAN AMBASSADOR
23 O
A ceremony held on 23 October 2014, at the residence of the
American Ambassador, marked the official launch of our 20142015 fundraising campaign. The US Ambassador to Belgium,
Denise Campbell Bauer, warmly welcomed more than 70 friends
and donors.

Each year, a special charitable project is put in the spotlight and
this year, Bednet was invited. Bednet connects children with a
long-term chronic illness to their class via the internet, enabling
them to follow their lessons and stay in touch during their absence.
As explained by Bednet Director Els Janssens, each connection
requires expensive equipment, and UFB’s grant will allow to
acquire some more.

Cargill also outlined its corporate social responsibility program,
and their partnership with the United Fund for Belgium. Many

For more than 80 nonprofit organizations
invited on 11 June 2015, it was a special day.
Excitement and celebration filled the air as the
awards for financial support made possible by
United Fund for Belgium were announced at
the 2015 Handover Ceremony.
The awards fund very concrete, specific
projects that are carefully evaluated by the
Allocations Committee before selection.
Committee chair Françoise De Croo-Desguin
called the grant ceremony her “favorite day of
the year.”
“This is the gratifying part,” she said when
presenting some examples of selected
charities. “We’re getting to help these
organizations do their work and are so happy
to distribute some 700.000€ raised this year.”
4
Now in its 43rd year, the Handover Ceremony
epitomizes the substantial difference that
United Fund for Belgium funding has made
to people, places and communities all across
Belgium with the many grants that have been
made since 1972. It also celebrates the talent,
hard work and amazing dedication of the
people involved in running these efforts.
Many thanks to Bayer for their hospitality
and the wonderful reception!

IN YOUR AGENDA!
AND BE PART OF THE
UFB TEAM AGAIN!
UFB puts is best feet forward for Villa Indigo!
31 May 2015 proved to be a perfect day for many celebrations. Not only was the weather ideal for running, but the 35th
anniversary of the Brussels 20KM race brought UFB’s supporters out in force.
The team running under the United Fund for Belgium banner drew more than 260 runners and raised more than
€16.000 for the benefit of Villa Indigo, a respite house that welcomes seriously ill children for short stays.
Two teams deserve a special mention: the huge SWIFT running team, with no fewer than 65 runners, many of them
very seasoned and well acquainted with the distance; and, at the other end of the experience scale, five brave members
of the Villa Indigo staff, who had no idea of what to expect, but all managed to complete the race!
We are so grateful to all of the companies, sponsors, and individuals who joined us in making this third year such a
success. Thank you for participating, donating, and supporting our mission. We look forward to seeing you next year.

PARTICIPATING IN OUR ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT IS ANOTHER WAY
OF SUPPORTING THE ACTIVITIY OF UFB AND IT IS FUN....
“This was an incredible year for our fundraiser,”
said Luc Missinne, organizer of the tournament.
“We had a full field, a good mood at odds with the
grey weather, and great people who made the
day just that!”
Held on 2 June 2015, more than 70 golfers gathered
for the United Fund for Belgium’s annual Charity
Golf Tournament hosted at the Golf Château de
la Tournette. Following the tournament, golfers,
sponsors and guests enjoyed dinner and an
evening full of raffles, prizes and awards.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity
that our golfers, sponsors, and supporters show
United Fund for Belgium year after year,” said
Luc Missinne.
“The Annual Charity Golf Tournament not only
gives us a chance to spend a fun day together, it
also brings in funds vital to supporting our work
on behalf of Belgium’s most at-risk. We couldn’t
do this important work without the support of our
many friends.”

LEUVEN BEARS ON WHEELS
Leuven Bears on Wheels en Junior Bears on Wheels hebben
Stella Artois Leuven Bears.
L’asbl a
UNITED FUND FOR BELGIUM
ESPACES EFT
GOED GEVOEL
Goed Gevoel vzw verenigt in haar sociale kruidenier ‘t Hofke

UFB ALLOCATIONS COMMITTEE
ALBERT CARBONNELLE
At UFB, we are proud of the quality and the impact of the projects
we fund. All funded projects bring concrete and specific benefits
to people in need.
We have lost a dear former Allocations Committee member; Albert was a generous and
optimistic person.
We are very grateful for his dedication to the underprivileged and
to UFB during all
those years.
To insure a qualitative selection of the projects, we can count
on the expertise of our Allocations Committee, composed of
volunteers with a very deep experience in the social domain.
The Committee members meet about once a month, carefully
examine each request and visit every single institution before
making a final selection.
This year, we are happy to welcome two new members: MarieLouise Malet for the provinces of Namur and Luxembourg and
Elien Van Dille for West Vlaanderen. Our sincerest thanks go to
Michel Humblet, who retired after covering Luxembourg for many
years and visiting tens of charities.
United Fund for Belgium is an organization that Barbara de Boutselis (a member
of UFB’s Fundraising Committee) and her husband Jean-François are very
passionate about. They consider to have been blessed in both life and in love and,
at the occasion of their recent wedding, they wanted to share their happiness
end help others who are less fortunate. So they asked their friends to consider
making a tax-deductible donation to UFB and the charities it serves in lieu of giving
a wedding present.
Thanks a lot, Barbara and Jean-François, for your generous example!
