Travel Recommendation
Want to see a tropical paradise
before the resorts
Submitted by Lainie McKeating
Want to see a tropical paradise before the resorts get built?
Come to beautiful Belitung Island, off the east coast of
Sumatera. What you get is low prices, undisturbed and
stunning (truly) beaches, and amazingly friendly people.
What you give up is Western tourist infrastructure like tons
of hotel and restaurant options and most everyone having
great English. Beach lounging chairs are even nonexistent
but even so, I can't stop thinking about how incredible
Belitung's beaches are.
Belitung used to be a massive tin mining area. This came to
a halt during the financial crisis of the late 1990's, and an
economic depression followed. Then in 2005 Indonesia's
best-selling work of fiction, Laskar Pelangi (the Rainbow
Troops) was published, about a group of kids on the island
and how they grew up together. That's when the first batch
of fans started to trickle in, wanting to see where the story
took place. The film version was made on the island in 2008,
and since then tourism from mostly Indonesians and
Malaysians has been growing. Less than 1000 Western
tourists visited in 2013, but that is increasing as well.

On our trip we used Antatour who arranged flights with
Sriwijaya Air, rooms at the new international standard
Aston hotel, and a car and driver with good English. We
visited all around the island, including the eastern city of
Manggar (land of 1001 coffee shops), a pepper farm and a
Tarsus monkey preserve. The second day was island
hopping on a boat, snorkelling and some great beaches as
well as a sea turtle preserve. Our last half day was spent
in the idyllic sheltered cove of Tanjung Tinggi where
Rainbow Troops was filmed.
We would definitely go back to this undiscovered gem only
a one hour flight from Jakarta. With the beauty and the
growing tourism facilities, it won't stay hidden for long.

Taxi Safety in Jakarta






Choose a taxi with a good reputation (Blue Bird, Silver Bird, Express)
There should be a taxi I.D on the dashboard, which contains the taxi's I.D and the
driver's I.D, complete with the picture. Match the picture with the driver. If they don't
match get out.
Note the number on the taxi driver ID or take a picture of it with your phone.
BEFORE the taxi moves, check your door. Can you open it from inside? If not, tell
the driver to stop ... and unlock the child's lock on the inside of the door jam ...
OR ... consider taking a different taxi.
Have an idea where you are going, so if you know you are going in the right
direction.
Have your emergency contact numbers programmed in the phone.
If you feel uncomfortable have the number ready so you just have to press the call
button and keep the line open.

Get Your Flu Shot!
The Southern Hemisphere Flu Vaccination has arrived in the Health Unit and is available to all AMER, EFM and FSN.
The Health Unit recommends that while in Indonesia you protect yourself against both flu seasons (N. Hemisphere and S.
Hemisphere), as the viral strain this year is different. This means that even if you received the flu vaccine in October/November last
year, you should still receive the 2015 ‘summer’ (S. Hemisphere) vaccination.
FREQUENTLTY ASKED QUESTIONS
How is the immunization given? The vaccine is given by intramuscular injection (nasal spray is not available).
Who can receive the vaccine? All persons, aged 6 months and older can safely receive the vaccine. Pregnant women and women
who are breastfeeding can safely receive the vaccine. The vaccine is contraindicated in persons with an egg allergy. Inform the
nurse if you have had any abnormal reaction with a previous vaccine.
Is the vaccine ‘alive’? The flu vaccine is inactivated, meaning it does not contain any live influenza viruses. The vaccine produces
immunity by mimicking the flu virus. Your body will react because it thinks you have the flu. This will result in some ‘flu-like’
symptoms. When the body realizes it is actually not infected with the flu virus, the symptoms resolve.
What are possible side effects of the vaccine? Possible side effects include redness, minor swelling and pain at the site of
injection. Fever, fatigue, headaches, join and muscle soreness can occur but usually disappear within 1-2 days.
Where can you get the flu vaccine?
Annex: Walk-ins for vaccinations available Monday-Friday from 08:30-12:00 and 13:00-1600.
Please note, patients seen on first come, first serve basis and will be fitted around scheduled appointments
Chancery: Tuesdays and Thursdays 09:00-10:00
SJHU: Wednesdays 14:30-17:00 (times will change in August)

Absolutely the best Driver—Truly, THE BEST!
Pak Sumardi has been with us since we first arrived in
Jakarta. He is smart, maneuvers traffic like champ and
is 100% reliable. Pak Sumardi is one of the major keys
to our family’s healthy morale here in Jakarta. His
English is good. He maintains our car perfectly, gets
along very well with our other staff members. He’s been
a driver for over 20 years and knows Jakarta inside and
out. He anticipates our needs and acts intuitively. He is
happy to work! He is not lazy at all, in fact he is always
willing to stay late and do what is needed. Pak Sumardi
has been my “Mom taxi” while we both work fulltime.
He attends my youngest son’s soccer practices as his
guardian. Pak S. plays soccer in our yard with our son
just because he enjoys being busy and active. Pak
Sumardi has a JIS and Embassy badge that allows him
to enter the parking areas and run errands for us. We
trust him as a driver and care taker, of sorts, for our
kids. When my older kids stay out late he is happy to
stay and ensure their safe return home. He has an
excellent disposition and works hard to please his
employer. Pak Sumardi prefers working in South
Jakarta, FOA, Essence, Brawijaya areas, but will also
consider Kemang. Available August 2 or possibly
sooner. Please contact Lainie McKeating for more
information lainiemckeating@gmail.com or feel free to
contact Sumardi directly 081315754736 (7/15)
Excellent Pembantu Available End of August
Ibu Yanti will be available to clean, wash/iron clothes,
and take care of your children at the end of August
2015. She was my nanny/housekeeper for one year.
Ibu Yanti was entrusted with taking care of our
4-month-old baby while also efficiently cleaning our
home when the baby slept. She is extremely
reliable, diligent, loving, and trustworthy. She worked
full-time, Monday – Friday and did my grocery shopping
once a week, dropped-off/picked-up our dry-cleaning,
washed and ironed our clothes. She speaks and reads
English well and we often communicated via texting one
another or by leaving notes. Ibu Yanti prefers to be a
live-out nanny/housekeeper. We are the second US
Embassy family she has worked for in the past 3 years.
Before that, she worked for an western oil company
family for 6 years and came highly recommended. Ibu
Yanti passed her RSO background and medical
physical exam/checks. For any questions/concerns,
please contact me at brianhanning@hotmail.com or to
schedule an interview with Ibu Yanti call or text her
directly at HP: 0813-1041-2584. (7/15)

REDC: “English Vitamin” Program for LE Staff Now Ready for All EAP Posts: The English Enhancement
Program, managed by the Regional Employee Development Center (REDC) at U.S. Embassy Bangkok, has
been piloting an “English Vitamin” program with 400 LE staff at Mission Thailand and Embassy Rangoon.
It has been a hit with them! REDC is now ready to offer English Vitamin to all interested EAP LE staff who
desire to strengthen their English language ability and learn independently. REDC distributes English
Vitamin to all subscribers via email twice a week. Each email provides an English tip, a useful phrase, an
expression, or a correction for a common mistake.
