JEWISH CONGREGATION OF NEW PALTZ
ELUL 5776 - TISHREI 5777
OCTOBER 2016
from the Rabbi
Dear Ahavat Achim Family,
“Arami oved avi”: these words begin one of the
most important of the ancient Israelite prayers – a
prayer that we no longer use as such. “My father
was an Aramean refugee.” We find the full text of
this prayer, or holy acknowledgment, in Deuteronomy, chapter 26, the portion Ki Tavo, which we
read not long ago, on September 24. It was recited
when bringing to the Temple a basket of one’s best
first produce of the year, during Shavuot. The
prayer recounts our journey from refugee to slave
to prosperous nation; the basket of produce is an
illustration of the land flowing with milk and honey
that we came into. Aram, the land this prayer
states was a homeland of oppression, is what
today we call “Syria.”
We have many verses in Torah that remind us of
our humble origins, and many that specifically
remind us to take care of the widow, the orphan,
the homeless, the refugee, for we ourselves knew
all too well what is was to be one. I wonder: have
we forgotten?
Twenty-five hundred years before the infamous
Dred Scott decision, and sitting there in plain view
of the supposedly pious Supreme Court justices
who made that decision, was the biblical law from
Deuteronomy 23 (Portion Ki Tisa, read on
September 17): “If a slave has taken refuge with
you, do not hand them over to their master.” The
reason is the same as above: we knew what it was
like to be a slave. Have we forgotten?
I am amazed that so many Americans who claim
to revere the Bible as their guidebook for righteous
living can turn their faces away from the plight of
the refugees that the Holy Scripture itself says to
embrace. So many ignore the orphan and the
poor and the hungry, when Scripture explicitly and
emphatically commands us to care for them. Apart
from the original natives of this land, nearly every
other American is the descendant of a refugee,
whether from political or from social oppression,
or the descendant of a slave. And this is not a
memory that has to stretch back three thousand
years ago, but generally less than three hundred
years ago, two hundred, one hundred, or even
within living memory.
Certainly we Jews have an especially keen
memory of the plight of the oppressed, the wartorn, the battered and beaten, the refugees from
relentless attempts to murder us. Any American,
and especially any Jewish American, must stand
up to help those in similar circumstances. Really,
any mensch must do so.
Join us for our special October 29 fundraising
event created by our Syrian Refugee Rescue
Committee. Details are on the next page. If we
have made the t’shuvah that we have hoped to
make during the Days of Awe, if we truly seek
to make up for past wrongs and to live more
righteously, than this issue is certainly a litmus
test of such a commitment. And when we vote
next month, we need to keep in our minds and in
our hearts the Jewish devotion to justice, our
devotion to overthrowing prejudice, bullying and
pettiness.
From our family to yours: l’shanah tovah tikateyvu,
may you be written for a good year.

ONE BOOK ONE NEW PALTZ
As usual, the kickoff meeting of One Book One New Paltz will be in our Jewish Center with Rabbi Bill
leading the discussion. The Bagel Brunch/Discussion will be on Sunday, November 13 at 11:00 AM.
Please feel free to bring a vegetarian dish to share.
The book this year is $2.00 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America, by Kathryn J. Edin and H.
Luke Shaefer, sociology professors and researchers. They found that over 1 1/2 million households live
on only that much, and they interviewed several families to learn how they got there, what they do to
subsist, and what their hopes are. They also give suggestions for what our government and our society
might do to help solve this problem. Please read this book! It is now available in paperback and
hardcover at our local bookstores at a 10% discount, and in the library.
One Book One New Paltz has 14 events planned for the third week of November, including book
discussions, presentations, a Do-It-Yourself Zine Workshop, a Resume/Job Search Workshop, and the
showing of an episode of the TV show Shameless. To see the entire schedule of events, please go to

“Cool as a Cucumber” September Luncheon
On a beautiful and warm September 13th, we welcomed 21 guests to our “cool” community luncheon, the first
after a summer break. Nicholas Baxter presided as our volunteer chef who planned, purchased and oversaw
the preparation of a fantastic meal.
Our appetizer was a wonderfully tasty ratatouille and a red pepper hummus served with whole-wheat pita
wedges and French bread slices. A delicious cauliflower soup followed; it was topped with apple/pear relish.
Yum! It was like having dessert early! The main dish was Moroccan fishcakes topped with fresh-cooked
tomatoes, alongside French-cut celeriac, lentils, coarsely chopped hazelnuts, and mint – very elegant as well
as healthy! Our beautiful salad was radish and cucumber slices with dill and a light cream sauce. Though
there was not much room left in our tummies, we couldn’t resist the light “deconstructed” meringues for
dessert with assorted fresh fruit, chocolate drizzle and cream.
Congratulations and thanks go to our new helpers who pitched in at the last minute when our regular
assistant cooks couldn’t be there: Jacki Brownstein, David Krikun, Carol Nolan and Myra Sorin in the
kitchen; and Marilyn DeAngelo, Sheila Fishman and Carole Ford in the front room. Also, a huge thank-you
goes to Betty Marton for her presentation/discussion, “In Your Own Words,” about how we can capture and
preserve our life stories for ourselves and for future generations. Our guests realized they have many such
stories, and shared them in the discussion. Thank you to all, guests and helpers alike. Please come again, or
please join us for the first time. We have a really lovely time.
Please join us at our next Luncheon, Thursday, October 20
Please note that this event will be on a THURSDAY, not our usual day,
and it’s in the third week of October, not the second week.
Our delicious community luncheons, sponsored by the Caring Committee, are open to all adults, with
special encouragement to seniors. For more information or to reserve your place, contact Myra Sorin at
255-5016 or myrasorin@gmail.com. We always have a good time and eat the best food!
Future luncheons are tentatively scheduled for Tuesdays:
Nov 8; Dec 13; (none in Jan or Feb); Mar 14; Apr 4; May 9; Jun 6.
Help Us to Help You!
The Caring Committee’s most important work is providing support to families experiencing illness, hardship or
bereavement, and congratulations to families with lovely accomplishments. Please bring such things to our
attention by contacting Carol Zuckerman (255-6604 or carolzuckerman@me.com) or any member of the
Caring Committee. We appreciate your help, and can’t do it without you!

Motion by A. Ruger, seconded by M. DeAngelo, to approve June minutes. Approved unanimously with two
abstentions.
Calendar and organization ideas – Carol Nolan
There has been a great deal of input into the development of the calendar. It will be distributed with High
Holidays tickets and will be on the website. It will be supplemented by the monthly Sh’ma calendar. There
are currently no dates for fundraising events, the blood drive or the highway cleanup.
Those involved in developing the calendar propose that each of the festivals, observances, etc., have an
“owner” or “point person” to quarterback it. It was also suggested that each Board member be an “owner”
or “co-owner” of an event. It was proposed that the “owner” need not be a Board member, but that there
should always be a Board member liaison for each event.
Thank you to Carol Nolan and Lisa Randleman for organizing the calendar.
Another suggestion: there could be a binder which would include the procedures for each event, including
all of the things that have been done to prepare for it in the past. An events checklist, drafted by L.
Randleman, was proposed to help clarify what must be done to prepare for any event.
Syrian Refugee Committee update – Carol Nolan
The fundraiser on 10/29 will include a wine and cheese hour, a Middle Eastern buffet, a keynote speaker,
a silent auction and dancing to the music of Soul Purpose. Tickets will be sold for the event at various
levels. This is going to be a JCNP-led event but not a JCNP-only event. The funds collected will be used
for direct aid to refugees through a well-vetted organization.
The committee sees itself as having three prongs: fundraising, outreach and advocacy. The committee
would like the board to approve the legislative agenda outlined in the committee’s proposal, which would
mean the committee would be involved in educational and awareness raising activities. It was suggested
that the committee hold a question and answer session for the congregation. It was also suggested that
the committee change its focus from advocacy to education.
High Holidays planning
We need greeters from the Board. A suggestion was made to have a committee of Board members and
general members to coordinate tickets. This will address security and help us gather information on nonmembers who attend. Volunteers for this committee are: L. Randleman, M. DeAngelo, M. Schain and A.
Ruger.
Thursday Night Live update – A. Ruger
The fall season is booked; we have a Klezmer band, two or three films, dance, etc. We still need some
presenters to introduce events.
Fiddler on the Roof ticket update – S. Holt
26 out of 50 tickets have been sold. The event will be promoted in the local newspapers; Woodland Pond
is working on selling tickets as well.

JCNP Board of Trustees meeting minutes
OCTOBER 2016
August 21, 2016
Ritual committee survey results – R. Torres
Robin Torres is now the chair of the Ritual committee. She summarized the survey results; there was a 60%
response rate. The committee, a diverse group, is currently meeting every two weeks. Data reveal that
people don’t attend shul for a variety of reasons (exhaustion, moved out of the area, age, etc.) but that they
love the shul and love being a part of the community. Overall, yahrzeits motivate people to attend.
Some suggestions are: to start services on time (even if there isn’t yet a minyan), to tell people the length
of the service (and keep it reasonably short), to feed people at services (either before or after), to start
services at 6 in the winter and 7 in the summer. People generally love the Rabbi and love music.
A suggestion was made to create a “hospitality fund” into which people would give money for an oneg that
they are sponsoring. The food would be bought by someone else, so that sponsors don’t have to cook or
set up if they are sponsoring an oneg (which is often a deterrent.)
Open House update – A. Paul
Open House to be held August 28, 10 AM – noon. Teri Gil is doing the Hebrew school part of it and
Amanda Paul is doing the membership part. Food has been ordered. Nancy Gross will do a craft. All the
Hebrew school teachers will be there. Board members are encouraged to attend.
Closing of Church Street
The Village Board has considered experimenting with closing Church Street on some days. The village has
been in touch with the Rabbi and will contact him if there are future discussions about it. It doesn’t appear
that it will be happening.
Membership
The committee is working hard but is still in need of a chair. There are people who have still not sent in
their membership information. Rotem and Nancy Gross are going to call Hebrew school families but other
members need to be called as well. M. DeAngelo and S. Holt volunteered to help make these calls.
People on the membership committee will also be making some calls.
Other/New Business
Range repair – The two ranges in the kitchen are disconnected for safety reasons and should be repaired.
The one on the left only has use of the burners and the one on the right only has use of the ovens.
The outside of the Community Center was painted and trimmed. The soffits were replaced. However, the
fiddler is still on the roof.
Adjourned 9:03 PM
Executive Session
If you wish to schedule an event at the Shul or Community Center, please confirm that
the space you need is available before finalizing your plans. This is important both to
avoid unexpected conflicts and because, more and more, cleaning and maintenance
are being handled by outside contractors who don't necessarily have a close
connection to our activities. Fitting their work in is much easier when there is a
complete picture of all building activities.
To reserve a space for your activity, contact Carol Nolan at ccnolan@hvc.rr.com.
