The New York Times covered the event in its September 7 edition – here is an excerpt from the article: Friday, March 4 SHABBAT ACROSS STAMFORD 5:20 p.m. Ruth Messinger, Special Guest at Crowne Plaza, Stamford NO KABBALAT SHABBAT SERVICE AT TBE CRACOW, Poland, Sept. 7— As the elderly remnants of Cracow’s ancient and once-flourishing Jewish population murmured half-remembered prayers, Eric Strom, a 13-year-old from Stamford, Conn., read from the Torah and became the first youth to mark his bar mitzvah here in more than 20 years. He read a portion of Scripture dealing with redemption and rejection of violence. Above him in the balcony stood Roza Jakubowicz, the Cracow Jewish leader who asked American Jews to send a bar mitzvah. She cried openly. The theme of Jewish life stirring in Poland, where Jews flourished until the Nazi horror, infused the bar mitzvah with tragedy and special meaning. After the bar mitzvah, as she happily served carp and tongue to guests, Mrs. Jakubowicz paused and answered a visitor who asked her what she had been thinking during the service. We have the oldest people of any Jewish community, and I wanted to bring pleasure to my neighbors that after so much innocent blood was shed a child could rise here to full Jewish manhood.” Shabbat, March 26 - Services 9:30 a.m. ELENA SINGER-FREEMAN, BAT MITZVAH APRIL Friday, April 1 - Kabbalat Shabbat 7:30 p.m. Shabbat, April 2 - Services 9:30 a.m. Mrs. Jakubowicz, both a driving spirit and a motherly caretaker of Cracow’s 600 Jews, recalled a time before the war when there were 60,000 Jews and 350 synagogues in Cracow, when there were daily Jewish newspapers and when business was conducted on the streets in Yiddish as well as in Polish and German. Like others in the congregation, she had her own memories of the destruction when millions of Jews - including Eric’s great-great-grandparents - were killed near here at the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Today, the Jewish population of Poland is increasing marginally, but there is a strong resurgence of interest in the country’s rich Jewish heritage. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Central Europe, particularly in Berlin, Jews are returning in droves. Today, about 50,000 Jews now live in the city where the plans were drawn up to destroy the Jewish people forever. Amazingly (and with no small sense of irony), it’s become an especially popular destination for young Israelis. This summer’s TBE trip to Central Europe (see page 9) will give us a Continued on page 18... The metaphors are tangled, but the emotional states they express are as immediate now as when they were written. We will read, discuss and savor these texts as they have come down through the centuries. Bring your own lunch. We’ll provide the lively discussion! Friday, April 22 - Shabbat, April 30 Before you start preparing for Passover, be sure to read through the Rabbinical Assembly Pesach Guide found online here: www.tinyurl.com/passoverguide2016 It is very informative and it answers so many questions that arise at this time. Among non-Orthodox Jews, the rate is 71 percent. It is hard to find a family at Temple Beth El who has not been touched in some way by intermarriage. And its implications for our synagogue — for the Conservative movement in general — are profound. The landscape has changed irrevocably, and we can either wring our hands and do nothing or try to expand the vistas of Judaism and the embrace of the Jewish people. How do we foster constructive dialog among TBE members about the realities of intermarriage? How do we, as Jewish parents and grandparents, acknowledge our growingly diverse families and help them experience the richness of our religion to the fullest extent possible? How can we enhance our efforts to reach out to interfaith families, both within and outside our synagogue, and make them feel truly welcome and a valued part of our TBE community? To help answer these questions, Temple Beth El, with support from our Men’s Club, has formed a Keruv Committee, and I am privileged to be its chair. Joining me on the committee are: Rabbi Hammerman; congregants Sue Frieden, Richard Heimler, Judy Aronin, Scott and Rae-ann Allen; and our executive director, Steve Lander. Our 2016 B’nai Mitzvah students and their families participated in our annual World Wide Wrap. They learned to wrap tefillin and talked about God and prayer with Rabbi Hammerman and Emily Eisen (our teen program leader). We thank the TBE Men’s Club, for providing the breakfast and for helping with the program. We also thank the participants in the TBE daily minyan who helped our students wrap their tefillin. The Hebrew word keruv (pronounced kay-roov) means “to bring close” and, over the months to come, the Keruv Committee will introduce programming to help couples, parents and extended families deal with issues regarding interfaith relationships and marriage. For example, we are planning to form a “Grandparents Circle” through which TBE grandparents can explore ways to help nurture the Jewish identities of their grandchildren while respecting the choices of their intermarried children. Rabbi Hammerman will hold a session in early April on how to tailor a Seder for a diverse family and tell the Passover story in a meaningful way. Other activities will follow. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL’S TU B’SHEVAT SEDER At the same time, the committee will study and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees on changes to current synagogue life that might foster a warmer and more welcoming environment and further engage dual-faith families — all within the framework and tenets of Conservative Judaism. We hope you will support the committee’s efforts, and we invite you to provide your comments and suggestions at any time to keruv@tbe.org. Stan Friedman Keruv Committee Chair HAPPY PURIM! 6 BETH EL CARES This organization focuses on Tikkun Olam (“Repair of the World”) through mitzvot, both in the synagogue and in the community. Messinger is president of American Jewish World Service, the world‟s leading Jewish organization working to end poverty and promote human rights in the developing world. She came to the organization in 1998, after a 20-year career in public service in New York City. As an activist for human rights around the globe, Messinger currently sits on the State Department‟s Religion and Foreign Policy Working Group and co-chairs the sub-working group on social justice. At the conclusion of last year’s season we asked members to fill out a survey about their likes and dislikes. The survey indicated that most members were pleased with the quality, selection and value of their shares. We had 28 responses out of 40 members (a very high response rate) and while we all look for and like different things, we had over 80% of our members happy with the overall selection, value, and quality of the shares. We had 0% who thought quality was low, a very positive statement about what Simpaug delivered to us. The pricing will be similar to last year: $800 for a fullshare and $400 for a half-share. The shares will not automatically include eggs and will be made up of 7-12 varieties of fresh produce each week, with occasional pantry items (jams, salsa, pickles, etc.). Eggs, meat, pantry items, and additional fresh produce will be available as add-ons for all CSA members through Simpaug’s new e-commerce website. Pick-ups will continue to be on Wednesday afternoons. Sign-up this year will begin around March 1 when Simpaug’s new automated system will be online. This will allow you to order your full or half-shares, eggs (if you so desire), and to provide multiple contact details for those who are sharing either a full weekly or every other week half-share. Visit the farm’s website at http://www.simpaugfarms.com/ CSA stand for Community Supported Agriculture. By purchasing our shares in advance we help the farmers plan a successful year without the worry of having to sell everything they produce in variable markets. We each take on a little of the risk of weather and production issues, but we also benefit with larger shares when there is a bumper crop. The shares tend to start small as things start to come in on the farm in June. By midsummer the shares are usually very plentiful with a large selection of produce. Pictures illustrating what has been included in past year shares as the seasons progress are available on the Simpaug Farm website. As always we will have a box available each week for contributions to the food pantry of any items that you would like to donate. Thanks to many of our members who contributed parts of their shares on a regular basis, we contributed close to a half-ton (Yes, almost 1000 lbs!) of fresh produce last season. Our thanks also to the mighty Eileen H. Rosner who lugged most of this to the pantry! In addition, this year we will begin operating a bit more like other CSA’s and asking for more members to get involved in small ways, either to help check in the produce when delivered, or to help close up and clean up if needed at the end of the pick up period. While volunteering is not required, it will help everything run smother for all of us. We will get back to all who sign up with more information before the season begins in June. The CSA is open to any member of the broad Stamford community, although we do have a maximum number of members we can serve due to the size constraints of the driveway and garage, so please feel free to share this information with any friends or family you think may be interested. For further information, please contact Susan Friedman at 203-569-7200 or Robert Friedman at robert.michael.friedman@gmail.com. I, _______________________________________, hereby authorize Rabbi Joshua Hammerman to act as my shaliach (representative) and empower him (or any agent operating on his behalf) to sell all hametz owned by me, or in which I have a share, whether it is in my possession, being shipped to me, or stored elsewhere, as of 10:00 a.m. on April 22, 2016. This includes any stocks or shares in corporations or businesses that buy or sell hametz. (The term, “hametz,” is understood according to the Rabbinic definition of leavened food and is to include all types of such food or liquids in pure or mixed forms). Since the buyer must have free access to the hametz he purchases, I also agree to authorize him to rent those premises in which these foods are stored and agree to keep these items separated and to seal them off. This sale is to be concluded in accordance with all the requirements of Jewish law and the terms of the general authorization contract used by the Rabbi for this purpose.
