WOMEN!
North Shore Habitat for Humanity (HFHNS) hosted a
Lowe’s sponsored Women Build event at 12 Park Street
in Peabody on May 5, 2012!
The Women Build event was more successful then we
could have imagined. Preparations began early, when
we met with students in the School of Hospitality
Management at Endicott College, to discuss Women
Build and solicit their help. The students were eager to
participate. We worked in partnership with Lowe’s of
Danvers to schedule three Women Build Clinics, March,
April and June. These clinics helped attendees to learn
skills related to the construction work on site.
On May 5th, after months of planning and eager
anticipation, more than 75 volunteers gathered at 12
Park Street for Women Build. Registration began at 8:00
am. Volunteers distributed t-shirts, assigned groups to
teams, and served coffee, tea and light refreshments.
Don Preston, HFHNS Board Chair and President,
welcomed everyone to the work site and introduced the
master of ceremonies, four year HFHNS volunteer, Deb
BUILD!
Pimental. Ms. Pimental described the work schedule for
the day and introduced the project supervisors.
The tasks to be completed included framing, strapping,
deck framing, insulation, bulkhead masonry, sheetrock,
siding, and finishing porch ceilings. The women were
enthusiastic and fearless! Many of them had attended the
two Lowe’s clinics that HFHNS offered. Others were
instructed on site in the use of power tools and industry
applications for products like spray foam insulation. All
were engaged in meaningful work.
At 11:30, we gathered for lunch and a much needed
break! Lunch was planned in conjunction with Endicott
College, Management of Social Events students. During
dessert, four community leaders shared their experiences
with HFHNS and four inspirational women homeowners
spoke to the group of the difference home ownership
made in their family’s lives. Their words were met with
tears, laughter and applause throughout the assembly!
And then it was back to work.
By day’s end, the women had completed more work than
anyone anticipated – front porches, back porches, from

Fulfilling Dreams, Building Homes
More than 75 women joined Habitat North Shore for its first Women Build on May 5th
the basement to the attic, and all the rooms in between.
As the ebullient volunteers left the site, our youngest
volunteer of the day, four-year old Becca, stood with her
mom, handed each woman a potted plant and said,
“Thank you for volunteering. Happy Mother’s Day.” It
just doesn’t get better than that!
Many members of our community stepped up to
volunteer on site for Women Build: Ms. Ann Manning
Martin, Councilor-at-Large, City of Peabody, Attorney,
Mary-Ellen Manning, Member, Governor’s Council,
Massachusetts, Ms. Eileen Quinn, Senior Vice President,
Wells Fargo Capital Finance, and Ms. Sara Forristall,
HERS Rater, Advanced Building Analysis, LLC
We would like to extend a special thank you to our
corporate leaders and local businesses that supported the
HFHNS Women Build event - Wells Fargo, City of
Peabody, General Electric, Advanced Building Analysis,

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
Deb and Bob Pimental
Deb are team leaders and true player/coaches. Bob
volunteers on both Saturdays and Wednesdays with new
and experienced volunteers. Deb helped lead the first all
Women Build in May at Park Street, Peabody. Together
with their Habitat volunteer family, Deb and Bob have
helped build homes in Salem, Lynn, Beverly and
Peabody.
They have participated in Brush with
Kindness projects and attend as many Habitat events as
they can.
Deb was no stranger to volunteering when she joined
Habitat. Electric Insurance Company® encourages
employee’s volunteer spirit and allows them time off to
help the community. Deb also volunteers for Senior Day
in the Park and Fairy Godmothers. Bob, hand crafts
furniture for family and friends. When they aren’t
working or volunteering, they enjoy spending time with
family and friends and relaxing on cruise ships.
Make a date to volunteer! That’s exactly what Deb and
Bob Pimental did back in May of 2008. A little over four
years ago, Deb, a Licensing Specialist with Electric
Insurance Company® jumped at the chance to join her
colleagues at the company sponsored build date with
Habitat for Humanity of the North Shore (HFHNS).
It was Memorial Day weekend when Bob dropped Deb
off early in the morning at the Salem build site to join
her colleagues. As Deb says, she had no construction
skills or experience but felt so welcomed by HFHNS
President Don Preston and long time volunteers, Joel
Brenner and Sister Pauline. The roof was not yet on the
house so Deb grabbed a broom, started sweeping and
began learning the ins and outs of construction. She was
tired by the time she left, but enjoyed the challenge and
mission so much she returned the next week to help a
deserving family build their new home.
Four years and counting, they are still enjoying their
Saturday date days. Bob treats Deb to breakfast and
then they join their volunteer family at 8:00 am. Deb
and Bob say working with the homeowners and seeing
their faces light up at each stage of the build is so
rewarding. They love the sincere hugs and gratitude the
homeowners share with the volunteers. Bob and Deb
say they themselves are so thankful for the opportunity
to build new friendships and to help make positive
changes in the quality of our homeowners’ lives and in
their communities. It’s the smiles on their faces and
twinkles in their eyes that show how much Deb and Bob
enjoy helping others when they give their time on their
Saturday date day.
After two weeks of shuttling Deb to and from the site,
Deb’s husband Bob was convinced to stay and volunteer
with her. Bob Pimental, a retired Mobil Oil Corporation
employee was hooked, and so began their Saturday date
days. So, how do they keep their date days so fresh?
Bob and Deb will say it is the friendships they make, the
skills they learn and mostly the pure joy they feel when
they work side by side with the homeowners.
Deb, an avid quilter, may not have known how to read a
construction tape measure when she started, but with the
help of her Habitat volunteer family, she has conquered
the tape measure, wall boarding, tiling, painting, and
siding; even donned a harness to help with roofing. Bob,
an avid furniture builder has shared his finishing skills
with the volunteer teams and honed his new and rehab
construction skills these past few years. Both Bob and
Habitat for Humanity of the North Shore would like to
thank Deb and Bob Pimental for their generous
donations of time, talent, cookies, friendship, laughter
and support.

designing the buildings, selecting families and
supporting those families. Mostly, it was good people
putting forth extraordinary effort to help transform a
neighborhood and assist eight families who were
strangers but are now friends. Thank you to all who
contributed to this project. Some get recognition, other
work quietly behind the scenes with the quiet
satisfaction of doing good. You know who you are.

ON THE FRONT LINES –
PARK STREET
Nearly four years ago, Don Preston took me to see a
prospective new project in Peabody. There sat three of
the most dilapidated properties in the city. After
unscrewing the plywood that covered all the doors and
windows, we went in. The houses were so chopped up
and filled with old furniture and debris; it was difficult to
find your way around. There had been a fire and
squatters. Once grand single family homes, they had
been chopped up into nine illegal apartments. I left the
property shaking my head and thinking that a bulldozer
was the only answer. It was far too ambitious a project
for our all volunteer affiliate to take on.
Fast forward four years. One home has been completely
gutted and rehabbed to historic commission standards.
Two families are living there and the house looks great.
The project is entering its final stages and as always, it’s
a little chaotic. We are rushing to get the final details
completed. Woodwork, floors and painting all have to
be completed. So, there is plenty of work for anyone
who wants to jump in. We work on Wednesdays and
Saturdays from 8:30 till 3:00. But if you can’t make this
project, there is always our next project, slated to begin
in October in Danvers……..
HABITAT TEAMS with COMMUNITY
GROUPS TO SAVE
23 CHASE STREET, BEVERLY
With affordable first time buyer properties a challenge to
come by, HFH-NS, through its Neighborhood
Revitalization Initiative (NRI) program, was determined
to save 23 Chase Street, Beverly. This single family
home was a designated first-time buyer affordable
property which was established in 2005 by the Beverly
Affordable Housing Coalition. The property, which had
been purchased by a first time buyer, was abandoned
over a year ago, and was greatly in need of
rehabilitation.
Another home has been gutted and rehabbed, also to
historic specifications. Two families will move in this
fall.
The third home was too far gone to save. It was
bulldozed and in its place, two brand new structures
were built. One of the new structures was made fully
accessible to accommodate the handicapped teenager
that would be living there with her mother and sisters.
That structure is now occupied by two families. The
other new structure is almost complete and families will
move in this fall.
How did this all happen? Not an easy question to
answer. First, was the vision and leadership of Don
Preston. Second, we had the willingness of the City of
Peabody to believe in us and help us financially to obtain
and rehab the properties. Finally, the dedication and
hard work of hundreds of volunteers who put in
thousands of hours raising money, working on the site,
Masconomet High School students made a difference at 23 Chase St.
In an effort to rehabilitate the home AND preserve the
affordability status of this property, HFH-NS teamed up
with Harborlight Community Partners, Mayor Scanlon,
City of Beverly, Mike Wheeler of Beverly Cooperative
Bank and the North Shore Home Consortium to
revitalize 23 Chase Street. The partnership worked
because everyone was dedicated to the availability of
affordable housing.

unknowns like are the main beams structurally sound?
What kind of insulation exists? And, how old are the
pipes, heating system and electrical wiring?

Habitat for Humanity provided the skilled labor and
purchased materials for extensive renovation work,
which included new hardwood floors, a new heating
system, roof repairs and landscaping. Board President
Don Preston said it best, "It goes back to the uniqueness
of Beverly in affordable housing and its willingness to
take on these odd situations," he said. "You need these
types of partnerships, and you never know what kind of
partnership is going to take place."
The house has three bedrooms, a covered porch and a
(now) nicely landscaped yard. Potential buyers must be
income-eligible and participate in a lottery conducted by
Harborlight Community Partners. "The real reward for
this hard work will be when a family is able to move into
23 Chase St. and call it home," said Andrew DeFranza,
Harborlight's executive director. Thank you to the many
Habitat volunteers for making this renovation a huge
success!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST FOR
HFH-NS TO BUILD AN AFFORDABLE
HOME?
HFH-NS works diligently at keeping the cost of
building/renovating affordable housing at a minimum,
without sacrificing Energy Star compliance and
incorporating GREEN building into every new build.
We are able to do this because of volunteer labor,
discounted material prices, and a committed Board of
Directors who tap into all available resources to
maximize “in kind” donations. Each build is unique, in
some cases we build brand new homes on a vacant lot of
land, and others require demolition and renovation.

Based on this calculation, the mortgage for a new
homeowner would be $335 per month (0% interest over
30 years). Add in real estate taxes and insurance, the
average MONTLY bill for a Habitat homeowner is $700
per month. Now THAT is affordable!
