A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
David de Funiak
2012 was another great year for Tree House, ending with a record-breaking 668 inhouse adoptions, and over 100 more adoptions through our foster homes and offsite adoption
partners. This is an especially rewarding milestone, considering the many sick and injured cats we admitted, and the dramatic improvement their lives took in less than a year. Thank
you to all of those volunteers, staff, and shelter partners who made their rescue and rehabilitation possible; you all helped to bring them a second chance at life.
These adoptions are the culmination of our mission at Tree House, and a living, breathing, and often purring manifestation of your support, at work, saving feline lives. You make our
work possible, and I hope you’ll take a moment to read how your support helped change their lives in this edition of the Year in Review.
Also in 2012, our low-cost spay/neuter and wellness clinic helped nearly 4,000 cats, through spay and neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and life-saving medications and treatments. We
completed the PetSmart targeted free-roaming grant in September by performing 1,500 spays and neuters for feral and stray cats in the 60651 and 60647 neighborhoods. We will
be applying for another grant from PetSmart in 2013, so we hope to continue to expand our reach in these underserved areas. Our goal for 2013 is to perform 5,000 spay and neuter
surgeries, and treat 1,000 companion animals in our wellness clinic. Our clinic staff is ready to handle the increased volume, and we appreciate the opportunity to continue this vitally
important aspect of our mission.
Our Community Cats TNR Program continues to expand, and we are now managing over 200 colonies, and nearly 1,000 feral cats. In support of our colony caretakers, we provide free
cat food for the colonies they manage through our Pet Food Pantry, and combined with the food that we gave out to our low-income pet guardians, Tree House distributed over 10,000
pounds of food! Thanks to all of our retail partners who donate their surplus supplies, and to the many individuals who regularly donate pet food and supplies to the Pantry.
We have other big plans for 2013 as well. We plan to implement a shelter software and database, to help us more efficiently track the health and status of our many residents,
admissions, and adoptions. We will also be revising our strategic plan to incorporate the many changes we’ve experienced in the recent past.
And as many of you know, we are in the midst of our capital campaign to fund the construction of our new Adoption Center and low-cost Veterinary Clinic. We are in the process of
refining the architectural and permit drawings, and we will be sending more information about this project in the coming months, so please be on the lookout for this.
If all goes well with our plans, and with our campaign funding, we hope to be able to break ground on this new facility in 2013.
However, we can only make this happen with your help, so please give your support for this project in whatever amount you can.
This is a pivotal moment in Tree House’s history, and we hope that all of our supporters will do what they can to give a little more
than usual this year to help this dream become a reality.
Thank you again for all of your support!
Sincerely,
David de Funiak
Executive Director

HAPPY ENDINGS
Heartwarming stories of multiple-cat adoptions
Adopting multiple cats can be a big commitment. While we do
require that kittens be adopted in pairs or go to a family with
another cat or dog to befriend, in general, multiple cat adoptions
don’t happen as often as we’d like. Oftentimes, it really is
advantageous for cats to be adopted together, especially in
the case of siblings, cats who are very social, and a mom and
her kittens. We also recommend that cats who have formed a
strong bond with another cat to find a forever home together –
which is beneficial to both cats and guardians. In 2012, we had
a number of multiple-cat adoptions…
THE ODD COUPLE: WENATCHEE & COBRE
It is always wonderful when someone adopts two cats who,
upon first impression, seem to be an unlikely pair, yet turn
out to be a wonderful team. Wenatchee and Cobre are two
such cats. Cobre, born around 2009, was rescued when our
Executive Director, David de Funiak, found him wandering
outside. Cobre was brought to our Spay/Neuter Clinic to be
neutered, and it was immediately evident that he wanted to
be loved by people. He was a big, burly cat with a relaxed and
mellow attitude - full of affection.
Wenatchee was admitted to Tree House along with her six
littermates after being found outside with their mother. A sweet
little black kitten, she loved playing as well as snuggling with
the other kittens. While Cobre and Wenatchee both resided at
our Uptown headquarters, they were in different rooms and
never met. One fateful day, a very nice couple was visiting and
fell in love with both Wenatchee and Cobre and decided that
both cats just had to become part of their family. They were
4
a bit of an odd couple; Cobre, with his burly body, was more
than 12 pounds heavier than Wenatchee, who weighed under
3 pounds. However, we all had the sense that these two would
be fast friends. And that was confirmed by the adopters, who
have shared that both cats are getting along wonderfully, and
are a great addition to their family!
FIVE BLACK KITTENS - MISCHIEF MULTIPLIED:
PEYO, KILOWATT, ELECTRINA, POWERS, AND VOLTA
Peyo arrived at Tree House when he was about three weeks old.
His mother was nowhere to be found. He was fortunate to find
wonderful foster parents in Monica and Joe, and it did not take
long for them to fall in love with Peyo, and they knew they had
to adopt him.
A week after Peyo was admitted, four black kittens were
abandoned at our Bucktown Branch - Kilowatt, Electrina,
Powers, and Volta, also without their mother. Monica and Joe
opened their hearts and home to foster this gorgeous litter of
kittens as well. Initially, they thought they might adopt one as a
friend for Peyo. Instead, they decided they could not part with
a single one! As Monica reflected on these past six months
she shared, “What a full house we have. As soon as we come
home, five little black furry creatures come and greet us. They
all get along great and sleep together and play together. Usually
before we go to bed the kittens get antsy and run laps around
the house. These cats have brought us so much joy, and we
were so happy to have been given a chance to save their lives.
Thank you Tree House!”
FRIENDS FOREVER: MUGSY AND PURR MONSTER
Purr Monster was spotted by Tree House staffers, Jenny
Schlueter and Ollie Davidson, on their way to work one
morning. A woman was desperately trying to flag down
anyone who would help her rescue this beautiful kitten from
a Dunkin Donuts parking lot. As Jenny approached, Purr
Monster carelessly played with nearby garbage, seemingly
un-phased. He purred during the entire trip to Tree House as
if expressing his approval. Little did this fortunate cat know
how well the timing worked in his favor. His purrs continued
throughout his admission exam, and we soon began to realize
he had an incredible range from low, deep purrs, to cheerful
chirps, to gravely, throaty purrs. Our clinic staff began to notice
he was having seizures and thought it might be related to a
medication side effect. However, further investigation proved
that it was not a side effect and he was placed on medication to
control them. He remained on our first floor to be monitored.
He was a bundle of joy, playful and rambunctious, vocalizing
his symphony of purrs wherever he went.
Mugsy, on the other hand, was really down and out when he
arrived with severe injures and in poor condition. He had an
open and infected fracture on his left rear leg and a fractured
pelvis. Unfortunately, the damage to Mugsy’s leg was beyond
repair, and had to be amputated. Mugsy spent time in isolation
to recover before being released onto our first floor.
We don’t usually have many kittens living on the first floor
with our mostly adult special needs residents, so Mugsy and
Purr Monster became fast friends. Purr Monster was very
outgoing. He had seemingly boundless energy and was always
up for playing with anything that resembled a toy, and with any
of the adult cats who would engage him. Musgy was not quite
as confident as his friend and would hide, at times, waiting for
Purr Monster to find him. At night, when all was quiet, a few
of our staffers had a chance to witness the rambunctious side
of Mugsy, as he would join his friend playing chase games
around the first floor.
One day a visitor expressed interest in adopting a pair of young
adults with special needs. The timing could not have been more
perfect. As she toured our shelter, she found Mugsy and his
friend Purr Monster, cuddled up in bed together. This woman’s
heart melted, and in that moment, she knew that she had found
the perfect cats for her. These two incredible cats had formed
a wonderful bond, and it is heartwarming to know they were
er

& Mugsy
able to find a permanent home together. Their adopter has
shared that Mugsy (who is now named Hopscotch) and Purr
Monster have been having quite a bit of fun in their new home.
They spend much of their time cuddling and their nighttime
antics have continued as they move household objects around
in the dark.
THE HEALING POWER OF FRIENDSHIP:
MARCO AND THUNDERPAWS
Marco and Thunderpaws were destined to be best friends.
While they were originally admitted to Tree House separately,
both came with their siblings, and both were very inquisitive
and playful. Both cats also tested positive for the Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), and were originally adopted
alone. Unfortunately, they were also both returned to Tree
House. Thunderpaws had only been in his home for a few days
before his adoptive parent developed severe allergies, so he was
able to transition back to shelter life relatively easily. For Marco,
however, it was a different story. Marco was returned after nearly
a year in a home. Returning to the shelter was traumatic for him,
and he struggled with adjusting. The previously exuberant and
confident cat we had previously known was sullen and shy after
being returned. He often hid under a blanket in the corner of
the room. Then, he met Thunderpaws. Thunderpaws had been
a boisterous and affable lad from the start. He was assertive
enough with his playful nature to nudge Marco out from his
gloomy gorge without scaring him back into it. Though they did
not meet each other during their first stay at Tree House, they
now acted as if they were old friends, reunited. Soon Marco was
back to his lively, gamesome self, and in no time they caught
the eye of an adopter who was originally interested in adopting
just one cat. However, when she realized how fond they were
of each other, she couldn’t bare to break up the friendship.
Thunderpaws and Marco are now happy in their new home and
hang out with a couple of dogs, too! We are grateful this caring
adopter realized the special bond these two cats have and that
their lives would be much happier if they could be together.

attention or wrestling whomever is in paws’ reach, these two
brothers were most interested in affection. They would rush up
to anyone who sat down and then lounge across their lap, waiting
for a friendly pet. Adding to their allure is the fact that they were
both born without the lower half of their left leg. However, that
did not stop them from running, jumping, and playing like any
other kitten. Javin and Jagger were at Tree House for only a few
short months before they caught the attention of Tree House
volunteer, Kelli Walker. Kelli is an incredibly compassionate
woman who has taken on the care of several special needs cats
for us. She had been through an emotional time in the previous
year, having suffered some unexpected and difficult losses with
cats whom she lost too soon. When she met Javin and Jagger
she knew she wanted to keep the brothers together.
Kelli shared that they are doing incredibly well and that all her
cats bring a special humor, joy, and a sense of stability to her
life. We understand that they quickly learned how to outwit
their less nimble housemate, a senior bulldog. Kelli joked that
when she brought home the two rambunctious boys, she
thinks the dog just thought it was one really fast cat! While the
bulldog claims the bed, the cats have learned to simply wait
until he is asleep and then gently jump up, the dog oblivious to
their antics. Javin and Jagger have also been compassionate
companions to her Tree House hospice-care cats as well as
their new sister, a blind kitten from Tree House named Oko. We
are so glad that these two were able to find a home together
and are grateful to Kelli for opening up her home and heart
to so many special cats in need of care, comfort, and love.

AN ADOPTER’S STORY
by Rachel Strayhall
I started volunteering at Tree House Headquarters in
Uptown in July, 2012. Almost immediately I fell in love
with Shalimar. She jumped up into my lap and did not
want to leave. If I tried to visit other cats, she would
follow me. So I gave up trying to do so, and became her
full-time lap loaner. I read her story on the wall, which
said that she and her sister, Shenandoah, had been
adopted as kittens but recently returned. It also said that
the sisters were not getting along well in the shelter, but
were deeply bonded in their home. I then started to watch
Shenandoah. She was much more cautious than Shalimar
and would come over by my legs when Shalimar was on
my lap and rub against them. Shalimar did not always
appreciate her sister’s approach and would hiss at her.
After a few weeks, I knew that I had to have Shalimar,
and also that I could not leave Shenandoah behind—she
was such a sweetie as well, and so beautiful.
The only problem was that I was moving at the end of
August. I could not have cats in my current living situation
and therefore could not adopt them until I moved. l spent
some time in Kansas City in August, hoping and praying
no one would take the two sweet girls home while I was
away. The day after I moved into my new apartment, I
adopted both sisters. They quickly adjusted to their new
home. Shalimar immediately resumed her spot on my
lap. For months, Shenandoah would enjoy my pets, belly
rubs, and rub her nose against me, but didn’t sit on my
lap. It took almost six months before she started lying on
my lap as well. Both girls also enjoy crawling on my back
if I’m lying on my stomach. The sisters quickly bonded
once again in their new home and often play with one
another as well as groom each other and enjoy sleeping
curled up together.
BROTHERLY LOVE: JAVIN AND JAGGER

EVENT AND FUNDRAISING HIGHLIGHTS
One of our volunteers famously said “Tree House is not just a shelter – it’s a life-style”. We are grateful for
all of our generous supporters who make our work possible.
SPECIAL EVENTS
We kicked off 2012 with another ‘Tats for Cats’ Tattoo &
Piercing Benefit Weekend at Insight Studios, Chicago’s most
progressive tattoo and piercing parlor. This event has become
a regular favorite, and January marked the 9th benefit for
Tree House. Insight Studio’s founder, Bob Jones, generously
provides Tree House with 100% of the shops’ profits on benefit
days. Insight Studios hosted additional ‘Tats for Cats’ benefit
weekends in June and November, and donated a total of $5,543.
We are grateful for the wonderful partnership with Insight
Studios, and the generosity and support from all involved.
In March, we were honored to be selected as one of only 50
shelters in the U.S. to receive funding from ASPCA to participate
in the nationwide ASPCA Mega Match-a-thon. We were thrilled
when we exceeded our goal and adopted out 32 cats – a total
which was a record for the number of cats adopted out in a
single weekend!
In the Spring, we were excited to be selected as the recipient of
the Harrington College of Design’s “Imagine 2012” Charity
Art Auction. Attendees bid on original art pieces from the
talented students and faculty at Harrington, along with some
pieces from our own art collection. Thanks to the Harrington
Student Government for hosting and selecting Tree House.
We celebrated our popular Architectural Boat Cruise Benefit
again in May, and this year celebrated Mother’s Day on board.
Chicago’s First Lady generously donated a boat cruise and The
Chicago Architecture Foundation helped by providing a docent
to give a very informative tour of Chicago’s skyscraper canyon
which raised more than $4,500 for Tree House.
May also means kitten season, and in preparation for our
new arrivals, Tree House again hosted a Kitten Shower at our
Bucktown Branch Adoption Center. Our supporters brought
much-needed supplies, played games, and of course, met many
adorable kittens, some of whom even found their forever home
that day!
In June, we celebrated the 7th Annual Stray Cat Strut, 5K
Walkathon & Open House. This popular event helps educate
the public about the plight of stray cats. More than 150
individuals participated and helped us raise more than $17,000
and our friends from Alive Rescue participated in the walk and
brought along some adoptable dogs! Congratulations to our
top fundraiser, Nick Vergoth, for raising more than $1,800.
6
Thanks also to Liz Houtz and Cody’s Public House for hosting
a fundraiser for Liz’s Birthday to help her reach her fundraising
goal. The Stray Cat Strut wouldn’t have been possible without
our generous presenting sponsor: Compassionate Veterinary
Care, and other sponsors including, Chicagoland Tails and
Native Foods Café!
We celebrated our 41st Anniversary, with our gala, the Black Cat
Ball in October. This has become our premiere fundraiser and
the 2012 Black Cat Ball was our most successful event to date!
More than 400 guests joined us at the elegant restaurant and
club, Nacional 27, for an evening filled with wonderful Latininspired hors d’oeuvres, fabulous cocktails created by master
mixologists, and delicious ‘Black Cat’ cookies! We were thrilled
to have Jackson Galaxy from Animal Planet’s “My Cat from
Hell” as our special guest. Not only did he share an amazing
and heart-warming talk about the importance of our work with
the neediest companion animals, he also visited Tree House
the following day to talk to shelter staff and share his story and
passion, and to reinforce the bigger picture of creating a No Kill
Chicago and nation. We are thrilled that he accepted an invitation
to join the Tree House Advisory Board and is participating in
the planning and development of our new Adoption Center. The
Ball raised more than $95,000. Don’t miss the 2013 Black Cat
Ball — more details to come soon! We are very grateful for the
support of our presenting sponsor: Cat Hospital of Chicago,
and other sponsors including Alan T. Prescott, CPA, Lettuce
Entertain You, and Chicagoland Tails.
The Holiday Season marked our 12th Annual ‘Lights of Love’
Open House and Lighting Ceremony. More than 300 guests
joined us for this popular event that includes a lighting ceremony
and tour of our Shelter Headquarters in Uptown. The event,
combined with the many tribute gifts we received throughout
the annual campaign raised more than $100,000! Visitors also
donated cat and dog food to help support our Pet Food Pantry.
This year’s event was generously sponsored by Animal Ark
Veterinary Clinic P.C., with additional support from Novartis,
and food provided by Native Foods Café and Trader Todd’s.
Thanks to our talented volunteer Navdeep Jhaj for providing
live music, and to all our generous supporters who offered silent
auction items.
MORE WAYS YOU HELPED TREE HOUSE CATS IN 2012
Tree House is grateful to the many supporters and partners
who help us at various outreach events, Happy Meowers, and
benefits. Thanks to everyone, we raised more than $10,000
combined, as well as donations of cat and dog food for Tree
House’s Pet Food Pantry.
We were pleased to again partner with Trader Todd’s for several
2012 benefit events. They helped us celebrate Mardi Gras at
Fat Cat Tuesday which raised more than $900. Our 4th Annual
Meow Luau celebrated summer in Trader Todd’s Beer Garden,
complete with a retired sailboat, and raised more than $2,400.
Additionally, Trader Todd’s features a special veggie burger with
$3 of the sale of each burger going to Tree House. Sales from
the burger raised nearly $500 in 2012. A special thanks to Trader
Todd’s owners, Todd Hyatt and Virginia Carstarphen, for their
wonderful support.
Charity Bingo Nights – We continued our Bingo Nights at
Hamburger Mary’s restaurant in Chicago’s Andersonville
Neighborhood. Patrons get 3 bingo cards for a $15 donation,
and the lively events included great drink specials and colorful
entertainment. Hamburger Mary’s hosted Tree House at three
Bingo Nights in 2012 raising nearly $900.
Movie buffs enjoyed films and cuddling kitties at our Bucktown
Branches’ quarterly ‘Mew & Views’ which raised approximately
$300. This is a great event for friends and makes for a fun,
budget-friendly, family evening. Guests were encouraged
to make a $5 donation to enjoy snacks and cozy up with our
resident cats to watch films.
During the warmer months, we also hosted three Rummage
Sales at our Uptown Headquarters. Thanks to all those who
donated items and shopped, and to Tree House staffer, Dana
Weiler, for heading up these successful sales and helping us
raise more than $3,000.
We celebrated an annual Halloween favorite Happy Meower,
“Scary”oke (Halloween-themed Karaoke) at The Closet, in
the Lakeview neighborhood. This year the event raised more
than $700.
Then in December we had one last toast for the cats in 2012 at
the Pour for a Paw Wine Tasting at Feast Restaurant + Bar.
We were able to raise more than $1,200 at the event along with
many generous donations of food, litter, and toys for our Pet
Food Pantry and resident cats!
MORE FUNDRAISING SUPPORT!
We also received generous support from Zoe Gladkowski of
Zoe’s Barbie Shoe Creations. He donated 50% of all sales from
his cat jewelry and accessories and even had a Purrrfect Jewelry
and Accessories Party at Tress Salon. He raised more than $400.
Check out his Esty.com page at ZoesBarbieShoes. We also thank
Brynn Capella, who generously donated her beautiful handbags
which helped raise funds at events throughout the year.
Thanks to Cynthia Nicita’s Brownie Troop #23008, and Girl
Scouts Troop #20614, Mary Zerkel’s daughter and friends, and
Elizabeth Raygoza and her daughter and friends, for having
craft and bake sale fundraisers for us throughout the year.
Mercer-Marsh & McLennan Companies held a successful
jeans day to benefit the cats. Manya & Roumen helped
facilitate donations from their jewelry sales. Board member
Alan T. Prescott organized the Brook Weiner silent auction for
Tree House. Joni & Glen Ponczak organized the Jeff Ponczak
Memorial Dice Baseball Tournament. Alison Stewart also took
collections at her birthday party and students enrolled in Teresa
Mastin’s Public Relations and Advertising Research Methods
class at DePaul chose Tree House to receive a donation as part
of a class project. Thanks to Laura Tornelli and Kiki Yablon
at Animal Behavior Training and Concepts for collecting corks
from their dog clients for our cats. We are also grateful to our
Team Tree House Members who, through various activities,
races, and events raised more than $6,000. Thanks to Phil
and Bethany/the Borre-Harding Wedding Page for generously
choosing to celebrate their special day by honoring their
cat Scarlett and raising more than $2,400. Thank you to our
other top Team Tree House fundraisers, Tammy Ayer, Stacie
Birkmeier, Kimberly Bowen (Tree House staffer), Monica
Francois, Tracy Luedtke, Sydney Maier (Tree House staffer),
Andrea Stabler, and Abby Zeciroski as well as yoga instructor,
Kirsten Higgins, for leading a donation yoga class to support
Tree House. Join Team Tree House and participate in “any race,
any place, any time” or any other activity you like, and raise
funds for the cats. Visit our First Giving page at Firstgiving.com/
TreeHouseCats to learn more.
EDUCATION AND ADOPTION EVENTS
Many people joined us at monthly Community Cats Workshops
in which we educated individuals about TNR (Trap-NeuterReturn) and colony management, and other ways to help
improve the lives of community cats.
including Bridgeview Bank, Pet Supplies Plus, Doggy Style,
Petco, Sam & Willy’s for their Pets on Paulina event, Dog-aholics, Unleashed, Kriser’s, and the Logan Square Farmer’s
Market. Several cats found their forever homes thanks to these
events. We are also grateful for the funds we were able to raise
and the food donations received for our Pet Food Pantry during
these events.
FAIRS AND FESTIVALS
Tree House participates in a number of fairs and festivals to help
spread the word about the work we do all over Chicagoland. Look
for us at some of your favorite events. We again participated in
the Chicagoland Family Pet Expo at Arlington Park Racecourse,
the largest pet expo in the Midwest, and raised more than
$2,000. We also took part in the Chicago Green Festival,
the largest ‘green’ environmental sustainability event which
brought in close to $1,000. We celebrated “Stray Pride” at the
Chicago Pride Parade which brought out 750,000 spectators.
We enjoyed meeting Tree House supporters and new friends
at Wicker Park Fest, and raised close to $800. We joined the
festivities at the Midsommarfest Street Festival in Chicago’s
Andersonville neighborhood and raised approximately $900. We
raised more than $1,300 at the Renegade Craft Fair in Wicker
Park, Chicago’s biggest and best indie-craft event. More than
100,000 people converged on Chicago’s North Halsted Street to
celebrate Northalsted Market Days, the largest two-day street
fair in the Midwest, and Tree House was among them. The event
helped us raise more than $1,500 for stray cats.

SAVING LIVES EVERY DAY
How our programs and services make a difference
SOCIALIZATION PROGRAM
Many of the cats we rescue need significant socialization in
order to trust humans and to adapt to life indoors. Our goal
is to increase their chances of being adopted into their forever
homes as quickly as possible. To that end, we carefully observe
all of our resident cats upon admission in order to provide
the extra time and care needed to help those who need a little
more socialization. First, our clinic and caretaking staff provide
the cats extra care while they are in isolation receiving their
treatments. Or in some cases, they spend time in a foster home
where they can receive some TLC in a quiet environment. Once
any health issues have been resolved, they are moved to one
of our colony rooms where a pink heart stating “Extra Love”
adorns their profile, and staff and volunteers are directed to
continue their work including play therapy, petting, and special
treats. For many of our cats, these additional hours are integral
to their socialization process.
See the side bar to meet some of our 2012 stars of socialization!
FOSTER PROGRAM
We are so thankful for the caring volunteers who open their
homes as part of our Foster Program. Because of them, we are
able to rescue even more cats and kittens and help them find
their forever homes. Our foster homes provide the comfort,
care, and time these cats need to grow and heal before being
admitted to Tree House. In 2012, we recruited 31 new foster
homes to help us rescue and rehabilitate more than 300 cats
and kittens! There is always a need for more foster parents.

treehouseanimals.org PET FOOD PANTRY PROGRAM
A vital community service, this program provides free cat and
dog food, cat litter, and other pet supplies to individuals who
are experiencing financial hardship. The Pet Food Pantry is an
important way in which we work to prevent individuals from
having to relinquish their companion animals due to financial
struggles. Additionally, the Pantry serves our registered feral
cat colony caregivers by providing food for free-roaming
cats under their care. In 2012, we served more than 370
clients and distributed more than 70,000 pounds of food. It’s
shocking to realize that this represents a 120% increase since
2008, and a 15% increase from 2011. We are grateful for
partnering organizations including Addison Street Target, For
Dogs Sake, D & D Distributors, U.S. Bones, PetSmart, Petco,
Pet Supplies Plus, and individuals who donate pet food and
other supplies which enables us to continue this important
program. Any amount of pet food or other pet supplies is
gratefully accepted. If you would like to make a donation or

BEHAVIOR COUNSELING PROGRAM
Tree House has become a leader in Chicago, and across
the country, in feline behavioral consulting. In 2012, we
performed more than 4,100 consultations. We formally began
incorporating behavioral counseling at our shelter more
than 15 years ago and have on-staff behavioral counselors
to assist cat guardians with a variety of behavioral issues.
Suggestions such as a trip to the veterinarian, a change in the
cat’s diet, an additional litter box, or making time for a daily
play session may be all it takes to alleviate some of the most
common behavioral issues. Studies show that several top
reasons people relinquish animals is due to behavioral issues.
We are proud of this program, which is potentially saving the
lives of thousands of cats by helping people become more
understanding pet guardians. We advise individuals to read
our Cat Care Guide, “Everything You’ve Always Wanted to
Know about Cats” available on our website. If you have a
behavior question or want to order a hard copy version of our
Guide (suggested donation $5), please contact (773) 7845488 ext. 0 or info@treehouseanimals.org.
HUMANE EDUCATION PROGRAM AND JUNIOR
VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
The Humane Education Program enables us to reach out to
youth as well as adults in our community, by offering numerous
classroom and group presentations to create understanding
and awareness about the humane treatment of animals and
help develop humane attitudes starting at a very young age.
We encourage individuals to consider the humane treatment of
animals beyond our visit, as something to integrate into their
lives and help shape our communities. Our program is at an
exciting stage of growth and in 2012, we had an opportunity
to reach more than 540 students. A primary focus was on
empowering youth by creating discussions about how to best
assist homeless cats as well as how to treat those cats in their
care. Humane education can start at a very young age, and
through our program, we engaged preschoolers to help teach
them about the ways that cats communicate.
Our Junior Volunteer Program has been an active part of Tree
House for more than ten years. Having impacted hundreds of
young people in that time, this program provides youth, ages
12 to 16, with hands on opportunities within the shelter to
learn more about cats and their care, as well as gain valuable
life lessons and the importance of giving back. For more
information about either program, or if you would like us to
visit your group, please contact Kate Boisseau at (773) 7845488 ext. 301 or education@treehouseanimals.org.
ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY (AAT) PROGRAM
Our AAT program was created to spread the joy that cats
can offer to people who are no longer able to live with their
own furry family members because they are in a nursing
home or hospital. In 2012, our staff and volunteers made
approximately five AAT visits per month to dozens of
locations, allowing our special Tree House cats to spread the
magic of unconditional love to more than 1,200 people. If you
know of organizations that might benefit from this program,
please contact Ollie Davidson at (773) 784-5488 ext. 228 or
ollie@treehouseanimals.org.
PET LOSS GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
A program that sets Tree House apart from many other shelters
is our Pet Loss Grief Support Group. Most of us know that the
loss of a pet can be a devastating experience. It can often
be the type of grief that is unrecognized by others, which is
also known as ‘disenfranchised grief’. Many individuals do
not feel they have the right to grieve over the loss of a pet, or
they are made to feel like they should just get over it. It can
be a very isolating type of grief in which individuals do not
feel they have anyone to talk to. The Pet Loss Grief Support
Group offers that forum, and is a safe space for individuals
to heal after such a loss. The group is led by Terri Treiman,
LCSW, and is a free service, open to everyone. More than 60
individuals benefited from our grief support group in 2012.
Thankfully, there is a growing awareness of the need for
attention to pet loss and a slow but steady rise in available
options for those who are dealing with this issue. For more
information, please call (773) 784-5488 ext. 227 or email
griefsupport@treehouseanimals.org.
LOW-COST SPAY/NEUTER PROGRAM
This is the program with perhaps the most impact on our
mission to keep homeless cats and dogs out of shelters and
make Chicago a No Kill city. Our BDVM Mac Lean Spay/Neuter
Clinic has greatly impacted the number of animals we have
been able to serve every year. Since opening in May of 2009,
we have spayed or neutered and vaccinated over 13,000
cats and dogs, bringing our grand total to more than 32,000
animals spayed or neutered since our program started 30
years ago with a humble voucher program. We are proud that
each February (Spay/Neuter Month) and October (Feral Cat
Month) we are able to offer free or deeply discounted spay or
neuter and vaccine services, helping hundreds of animals and
the guardians who care for them.
COMMUNITY CATS TNR PROGRAM
This vitally important program educates and assists people
interested in helping outdoor community cats. The program
includes a trap bank, recovery space, the Pet Food Pantry,
Community Cat workshops, an email and phone helpline,
and trapping assistance. In 2012, we fielded more than
3,700 requests for help, and our TNR Team personally
trapped nearly 1,200 cats, preventing the births of countless
homeless kittens. Of these trapped cats, more than 300 were
taken in by us and re-homed. Of these very lucky cats, 166
were admitted directly into Tree House and the others were
adopted off-site. Some of these cats and kittens were adopted
into their new homes directly from their foster homes; some
were fostered and adopted out at one of our pet store partners,
Doggy Style, Follow Your Nose, and Pet Supplies Plus; and
40 kittens were adopted through a pilot program partnership
with the Anti-Cruelty Society. We now sponsor more than
330 registered caretakers throughout Cook County, and our
colony caretakers manage nearly 2,000 community cats!
By far our biggest project of 2012 was the completion of
our Targeted Trapping Project. On our wish list for years, we
were thrilled to be awarded a grant from PetSmart Charities
to fund this project, which focuses on several west and
near-northwest neighborhoods in Chicago, which have been
plagued by a disproportionately high number of outdoor
cats. In 2012, we trapped over 780 cats in our targeted area,
exceeding our goal of 1,500 by the project’s end in September.
All cats in our targeted areas receive our TNR package at no
charge (surgery, vaccinations, parasite treatment, and eartip). In addition, they are microchipped and treated for any
injuries or illnesses before being released back outside. All
socialized cats and young kittens are “pulled” by Tree House
and readied for adoption. For more information on how
you can help your community cats and on how to do TrapNeuter-Return, please visit the Community Cats Program tab
at TreeHouseAnimals.org.
OUR VOLUNTEERS
Tree House’s work is accomplished with the help of
hundreds of dedicated people, whose primary reward is the
unconditional love of our many shelter cats. We can’t thank
our volunteers enough for their hard work and unending
support of our organization. In 2012, we received more
volunteer participation than ever before: more than 350
active volunteers donated nearly 25,000 hours of their time
to help our cats. By offering our volunteers more training and
opportunities, having new people shadow more experienced
volunteers, and giving everyone more responsibilities, both
shelter locations have really benefited. Of course, we could
always use more volunteers, so if you’ve ever considered
volunteering, now is an exciting time to join us! Please
contact Ollie Davidson at 773-784-488 ext. 228 or at ollie@
treehouseanimals.org. We’d love to hear from you!
TREE HOUSE 2012 STARS OF SOCIALIZATION
In 2012 we saw some heartwarming socialization stories;
stories of cats who struggled and lived in fear, and who
slowly made strides in gaining trust and confidence. Two
true standout stars are Thimbelina and Apple Fritter.
Thimbelina was found abandoned along with twelve
other cats all of whom had been neglected. She had
been in a carrier and was terrified of humans. She was
underweight and suffering from skin allergies which
caused her to lose her hair and created a bloody rash.
This caused the area around her eyes to swell to the
extent that she could barely open them. We were able
to manage her skin allergies with diet and medication,
however her socialization proved to be more challenging.
Initially, Thimbelina was very wary of the affection
bestowed upon her and resisted socialization. With care
and time, Thimbelina began to understand that she did
not need to fear all humans. Adorable little Thimbelina
has made stellar progress in the nearly three years since
her admission. Today she resides in our Programs Office,
where she remains on a restricted diet. We are thrilled
that her face has healed, and that she is no longer in pain,
allowing her to comfortably open her eyes and watch
squirrels busily scamper around the trunk of the tree
positioned just outside our front windows. She sweetly
accosts visitors with loud, plaintive meows until she is
properly greeted with a scratch on the head. She loves
lounging in laps and giving kisses with her cute, pink
nose. While loud, garish toys and sudden movements
can still startle her, gentle playtime is now one of her
favorite activities. Thimbelina is a sensitive soul known
for having hurt feelings if ignored. She is a true star of
socialization, and we hope her light catches the eye of an
adopter soon.
reassured her with soft, kind words. Every muscle in her
body would tighten at the touch of a human hand. She
could not be distracted with toys and showed no interest
in meeting other cats.
In 2012, however, there were little signs that perhaps
Apple Fritter was beginning to awaken from her mental
anguish. No one had ever caught a glimpse of Apple
Fritter playing, yet staff and volunteers began to notice
that her toys were mysteriously appearing in her water
bowl. Then came her joyful songs and she began to chirp
like a chickadee when she thought no one was around.
We do not know if Apple Fritter was once a house cat
left traumatized from her ordeal on the streets or if she
was truly feral, but in the summer of 2012 she began to
blossom, responding to affection and even seeking it out.
She loves scratches under her chin and rubbing cheeks
with people. Apple Fritter’s health issues are managed
with daily medication.
These two shining examples of socialization are possible
thanks to the love, patience, and devotion of Tree House
staff and volunteers. Our final wish for these sweet cats is
that they can find their forever homes in 2013.

Lovely Apple Fritter was trapped almost two years ago
during one of our TNR projects. She was in very poor
condition, suffering from eyelid agenesis (a condition in
which a portion of the eyelid is missing), painful mammary
cysts, and diabetes. Tree House clinic staff were able to
stabilize her health and treat her eye defect with surgery.
However, this gentle creature was so unresponsive and
depressed that we wondered about her quality of life.
For over a year, Apple Fritter cowered in her litter box
or covered her face in her bed as staff and volunteers

BDVM MAC LEAN CLINIC HIGHLIGHTS
How we’re improving the lives of Chicagoland’s pets and stray animals
In 2012, the BDVM Mac Lean Spay/Neuter Clinic
performed more than 3,000 sterilizations, for a
combined total of more than 12,000 since we opened in
May, 2009, and nearly 30,000 since Tree House opened
over 40 years ago. In addition to increasing the number
of surgeries we’re performing, we also continue to offer
high-quality, personalized care for each animal who
passes through our doors. At our Clinic, cats and dogs
are not only spayed and neutered, they also receive a
thorough examination to assess their overall health, and
our staff treats any minor injuries or conditions. If more
serious health issues are identified, our staff discusses
these with the animal’s guardian or caretaker. All animals
sterilized at Tree House’s Clinic receive this specialized
care—whether they are feline or canine pets, or stray or
feral cats. We consider every life valuable and deserving
of the extra time and care.
OUR WORK WITH COMMUNITY CATS
The majority of cats that we see at the BDVM Mac Lean
Spay/Neuter Clinic are free-roaming cats who come in
through our Community Cats TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return)
Program. Many of these cats were born outside and are
unsocialized to people. Some, however, are abandoned
pets who have become estranged from their guardians
for various reasons. Our TNR Team traps these cats
and brings them in for sterilization, vaccinations, and
parasite treatment. The package price is $30, but with
a number of grants and other funding sources we are
often able to reduce that price for large projects or to
assist people who are unable to afford the cost for an
entire colony of cats.
A large percentage of our clients in 2012 came from
our Targeted Trapping Project, thanks to a grant from
PetSmart Charities, which provided free packages for
cats in our targeted neighborhoods on the west side of
Chicago. Targeted Trapping Coordinator, Kari Johnson,
and dozens of wonderful volunteers who make up the
Tree House TNR Team canvassed and set traps in these
target areas, with the goal of sterilizing 30 cats weekly
for surgery. In 2012, more than 780 cats were served
through the Targeted Trapping Project. About half were
returned to their colonies under the management of a
caretaker, and the rest stay at the clinic until a foster
home can be found or a space opens up at the shelter.
10
But community cats do not just flourish in low-income
neighborhoods. Community cats can be found in every
neighborhood in the city as well as the suburbs and in
rural areas as well. Our low-cost TNR package offers an
urgently needed option to caring Chicagoland residents
who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity to help
these cats. In 2012, we fixed more than 2,500 feral or
community cats and we look forward to our continued
work with these amazing and resilient creatures.
OUR VOLUNTEERS
The clinic wouldn’t operate as smoothly as it does
without our reliable volunteers. Every day, we have at
least one volunteer who is not afraid to pull up shirt
sleeves and get down to some dirty work. There’s a lot of
work to be done here, and we’re happy to have the help!
Our volunteers feed, medicate and change bedding for
the cats who are boarding, sanitize the recovery rooms,
do laundry, mop floors, clean cages, lint roll surgical
drapes, prep parasite treatment syringes and perform a
myriad of other important tasks as part of the general
maintenance and daily necessity of the medical setting.
There is a strict training code on practically every
aspect of the volunteer duties. There are even step-bystep instructions on how to make cleaning fluids and
how to clean the cages with those fluids. We stress to
our volunteers that while this work is not glamorous,
cleaning and sanitizing the surgical bays, cages, and
all other places where cats come into contact with, is
paramount to maintaining a disease-free environment.
Our volunteers work hard and we very much enjoy the
satisfaction they get from seeing the results of their
labor at the end of each shift.
MODEL PATIENTS
We treat so many special animals, but we are especially
proud of having been able to go above and beyond to
treat these three cats in particular:
A kind man started feeding Sharkey, a four-month-old
kitten, on his back porch. Noting that he was quite ill,
he brought him inside. Sharkey did not improve so he
brought him to our Wellness Clinic and we prescribed
antibiotics for what appeared to be an upper respiratory
infection. After a week of treatment, he was still not
improving, so he returned. We changed antibiotics a

couple more times but Sharkey never improved, so we
knew further diagnostic testing was needed. Sharkey’s
rescuer was not in a position to provide the kind of
specialized care he needed, so we agreed to admit him.
Our Director of Veterinary Services discovered that he
needed surgery to remove a polyp. She reported that
Sharkey had “the biggest, nastiest polyp she had ever
seen.” One week after surgery he was moved to our
adoption floor. Less than one week after that he found a
new home! One of our caring staff members shared the
good news with Sharkey’s rescuer and he was elated that
he was treated and has a new, loving home.
Daddy O’Hare arrived under tragic circumstances. Just
years before, he was TNR’d and released to an industrial
area near O’Hare Airport where workers had been
feeding him. Then last year, he was thrown out of a
moving car in a carrier outside another shelter. Luckily,
they discovered that he was chipped to our clinic and
called us. He was in very bad shape health-wise, and he
was acting feral, so it was hard to even examine him to
make a diagnosis. But something in his eyes convinced
some of our clinic staff that he might socialize and that
he really wanted to live, so they elected to stabilize
him and give him some time so we could provide
further treatment as he grew more comfortable. Clinic
staffer, Jennifer Sammons, reported that she would rub
between his eyes and although he was uncomfortable,
he would look right at her! Weeks of further specialized
treatment followed by months of intense socialization
led to Daddy’s happy ending. He was adopted by Alex
Talbott and they have become good buddies. You can
read more about Daddy O’Hare’s dramatic story in the
Spring/Summer 2012 edition of Tree House News. Visit
TreeHouseAnimals.org/THNews.
After
Kai-Lan was the last cat rescued from an emergency
hoarding situation in which all of the cats were in
horrible physical shape, but Kai-Lan was arguably the
worst. She looked like the life had literally been sucked
out of her; she was so weak from having litter after litter
of kittens (they were also rescued) and from years of
neglect and severe flea infestations. Her health was
compromised and she seemed scared and traumatized,
and our clinic staff found her treatment to be especially
challenging. Some of the cats from the project were so

under-socialized that they had to be relocated to barn
homes, but again our staff had a feeling that she was not
truly feral. After several months of daily TLC including
force feeding and topical and oral medications, KaiLan was finally well enough to be spayed and moved to
our adoption program. She found her forever home in
November, 2012.
OUR WELLNESS CLINIC
Every Monday, dogs and cats visit for annual exams,
vaccines, de-worming, microchipping, and other basic
services, for a fraction of the cost of a regular private
veterinary clinic. Many of the socialized cats rescued
from trapping projects come to the Wellness Clinic for
their booster shots, 3-4 weeks post surgery, making it a
very convenient option for TNR practitioners to provide
their newfound friends with economical healthcare in
preparation for adoption. We feel it is very important
to offer a low-cost option for basic veterinary care to
people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford this
for their furry family members. In 2012, we saw nearly
1,000 pets at the Wellness Clinic.
DOGS ARE WELCOME, TOO!
Our medical services are not just for our feline friends.
Aside from being welcome at our Monday Wellness Clinic,
we provide low cost spay/neuter and vaccinations for
dogs on Tuesdays. Because our anesthetic equipment is
geared towards cats, who are small, we can only service
dogs that weigh under 50 pounds to safely undergo the
procedure at our facility. Just as we do for pet cats, we
offer discounts on our already low prices, for clients
who receive public assistance or are unemployed, or for
students. In 2012, we served 269 dogs and their human
companions. We are very grateful to our canine clients
because their fees generate much needed income for the
clinic to continue offering free or deeply discounted TNR
packages for the community cats who don’t have any
human guardians to pay for their services.
We’re always looking for help at our Clinic and with
our Community Cats Program, so if you are ready to
commit to a schedule and learn more, please contact
Ollie Davidson at ollie@treehouseanimals.org to get the
process started.

Love Before
MEDICAL MIRACLES
Providing specialized medical care makes us unique
Albee was found under a porch, unable to stand or walk.
Thankfully he was rescued and taken to a veterinary
emergency center where we learned that he suffered from
severe injuries including both pelvic and tibial fractures.
Additionally, he was underweight and dehydrated. After
surgery to repair the damage to his hip and leg, Albee was
placed in a splint and remained on strict cage rest for several
long months to recover. He was an incredibly patient guy
and thankfully his wounds healed beautifully. Albee was
released and immediately began roaming the first floor of
our Shelter Headquarters, eager to discover all there was to
see. This gentle soul soon found a forever home where he
now receives plenty of attention and affection.
Calpurnia was rescued when she was seen wandering in an
industrial area with a deformed front leg. We determined
that this precious kitten was unable to use her leg as
she suffered from significant muscle wasting and nerve
paralysis. Calpurnia also suffered from an umbilical hernia
which could lead to serious intestinal injury if left unrepaired.
Calpurnia underwent surgery to have her hernia fixed as
well as have her leg amputated. After being released from
isolation, it was evident that Calpurnia, while little in size,
possessed a big dose of confidence. She quickly learned to
navigate without her damaged leg and was moved to our
kitten adoption room where her playful energy caught the
attention of her adopter. She is now enjoying her new home
with one of her kitten roommates.
Love had been spotted wandering outside several times by
concerned neighbors who noticed that she appeared to be
injured. They called Tree House and our team jumped to action
to save her. Love’s front leg had been completely severed, her
bone and ligaments exposed. She was taken for emergency
care and further examination revealed that her tail was broken,
she had an upper respiratory infection, heart murmur, and a
highly contagious form of skin mites. Her injuries appeared
to have been caused by an inhumane trap. She had been
hobbling around for several days and possibly weeks on the
exposed bone. Due to her many health issues, surgery had to
wait. It was a challenging time as Love adamantly fought the
bandages on her leg and would then cry out in pain when they
needed to be changed. Finally Love was strong enough for
surgery. Her leg was beyond repair, so it had to be amputated.
She made incredible progress and was soon moved to the
adoption floor. Her gentle nature had remained throughout her
ordeal as she eagerly greeted visitors and would roll over for
12
belly rubs. It was not long before she was adopted into her
forever home.
Kaizen was dangerously ill when he was found outside,
abandoned in a carrier. He was emaciated, dehydrated, had
wounds on his tail, a swollen nose, fur loss, a heart murmur,
and blood work revealed that he was anemic and had elevated
liver enzymes. We immediately began an extensive treatment
regimen of various medications in order to tackle his many
health issues. It was a slow and tenuous process, but over
a couple of months, Kaizen’s health began to improve. His
incredible turnaround and recovery revealed a cat that looked
entirely different. His overall body condition dramatically
improved, his wounds healed, his heart murmur resolved, and
his blood work normalized. Eventually he was healthy enough
to be placed on the adoption floor where he did not remain for
long. His improved health allowed the outgoing and loving cat
that he was to emerge. We are grateful this deserving kitten
found his permanent home.
Little Dove’s injuries indicated he might have been the victim
of cruel abuse. He had extensive wounds on his head and neck
which we believe may have been burns, possibly caused by
someone pouring a hot or caustic liquid over his head. When
he was found, he was taken to a veterinary emergency center
to be stabilized and then transferred to Tree House. It was a
challenging recovery for Little Dove. Given the extent of his
wounds, he was treated with both topical and oral medications.
Things were complicated when his healing wounds began to
itch, and he would scratch them, further damaging the skin.
After months of being confined, he was healthy enough to
be released onto our adoption floor and delighted everyone
with his playful exuberance. Visitors took quick notice of this
beautiful little cat, and he was adopted into a loving home in
no time.
Princess Peach’s story is an unfortunate case of neglect.
She was seriously ill and living in a home with approximately
fifteen other cats. Dirty, underweight, and dehydrated,
Princess Peach’s eyes were so severely infected that her left
eye was enlarged and bulging out of its socket. Additionally,
she was so badly malnourished and infected with parasites
that her abdomen was swollen. An attempt was made to save
her eyes with aggressive medication treatment; however, her
left eye was too far gone and eventually needed to be surgically
removed. Thankfully, while her right eye suffered permanent
damage, over time the infection resolved itself and her eyesight

was saved. After regaining her health, Princess Peach joined
other cats on the first floor of our Headquarters. She made
quite a splash with her boundless energy, and her infectious
personality caught the attention of her adopters. She found
her very own home with another special cat named Rios
(next profile).
Rios was admitted, along with his two brothers, in 2011 as
a healthy, yet very shy kitten. After spending some time in
isolation with his brothers to be socialized and receive their
treatments to prepare them for adoption, Rios and his brothers
were moved to our Kitten Colony Room. His more outgoing
brothers were adopted quickly, but Rios was left behind. A
couple of months later he began to sound congested, and
was treated for these symptoms. Despite several rounds of
various treatments, he seemed to worsen, so we sent him to a
respiratory specialist who diagnosed him with nasopharyngeal
stenosis (a narrowing of the nasal section of the pharynx),
which caused him to have great difficulty breathing and
severely impacted his ability to engage in normal activities
such as running and playing. It was determined that his
best option was to undergo a surgical ballooning procedure,
intended to open up the passageway to enable him to breathe
normally. Unfortunately, the procedure did not significantly
improve his condition. Other options were explored, and
the specialist believed that a second ballooning procedure
could help. Rios received this second surgery, which greatly
improved his breathing and quality of life. Soon after his final
surgery, his spirits improved and he finally found his forever
home with his playmate Princess Peach (previously featured).
Sancho had been adopted from Tree House more than ten years
ago. Sadly, however, he was found on the streets in December
2012 in critical condition. He was taken for emergency care
where he was stabilized before being transferred to Tree
House. When he arrived here, he was in such poor condition
that he was unable to lift his head. He was underweight and
dehydrated. It was clear there was something seriously wrong.
Blood work indicated that he was anemic and had elevated liver
enzymes, which could have been caused by ingesting a toxin
while he was on the streets. Within days of starting treatment,
he began to show marked improvement and, although a bit
shaky, he would stand and walk around in his cage. After
regaining his health, he underwent an extensive dental where
many of his remaining teeth needed to be extracted. While he
has recovered well, he can be a bit unsteady at times, possibly

ch
suffering from mild cerebellar hypoplasia, a condition that can
be caused by such things as malnourishment, poisoning, or
infections. Sancho is eager for someone to gaze into his big
blue eyes and find room for him in their heart and home.
Silver Lining was brought into our spay/neuter clinic with
severe and horrifying injuries including a bite wound which had
left a giant hole on her back in which you could see through
from one side of her body to the other, muscle and bone
exposed. Silver Lining had suffered from neglect. She had
been let outside and was viciously attacked by her guardian’s
dogs. The violent wounds extended across her back and along
both sides of her spine. She underwent immediate surgery
to repair her wounds and was then placed on antibiotics to
treat an associated infection. Thankfully, she recovered quickly
and was on our adoption floor in no time, where staff and
volunteers worked to help ease her fears and earn her trust.
This resilient and brave cat quickly found her new guardian
and settled into a new home, where she will be kept safe for
the rest of her life.
A shocking story of animal cruelty, Timothy Leary was seen
being thrown from a moving car on Chicago’s busy Lake Shore
Drive. Thankfully a Good Samaritan rushed in to rescue him
before Timothy could be hit by oncoming traffic. Timothy was
taken to a veterinary emergency center and then transferred
to Tree House to more fully assess his condition. He was in
a great deal of pain and understandably very afraid. He was
anesthetized to receive surgical treatment for multiple injuries
including broken teeth, torn gums, and an injured jaw, most
likely from facial impact on the pavement. He also suffered
from numerous abrasions on his body. After spending some
time recovering in isolation, and receiving a lot of love,
Timothy Leary’s body and spirit recovered fully, and he found
his forever home.

TREE HOUSE CATS
Every cat who passes through our doors is welcome to stay as
long as it takes to find the perfect home…even if that means
that they’re with us their entire lives. Some of the following cats
spent many years with us; others arrived in such horrible health
or with such severe injuries that all we could do is humanely end
their suffering. We didn’t even have time to give some of them a
proper name, but we loved them all the same…
Thanks to the support we receive from our
shelter partners and foundations including:
