And while 2013 ! ! year on so many fronts, we remain determined in our was a record setting commitment to work every day to make WMRC a better radio station for our listeners and clients-‐-‐-‐and a better partner for you. Over the past year we’ve expanded our efforts to inform and entertain on a much broader level incorporating a top notch web site and interactive media center to allow us to deliver streamed and “on demand” local content. We launched into the E-‐Commerce world with our Steals & Deals Marketplace, E-‐mail marketing with our “14-‐90” Society, and Social Media networking with Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. We’ve truly become the local Multi-‐Media resource our listeners & clients have been searching for. In the coming year, I promise we will work hard to grow WMRC-‐First Class Media into a community partner you can continue to be proud of. Tom McAuliffe II, President, First Class Radio Corp. In November of 2013, WMRC was honored by winning the coveted “Radio Station of the Year” at the Massachusetts Broadcasters Association’s Sound Bites event for the second year in a row! In addition to this great honor WMRC also picked up a first place award for “Best Use of Digital Media” for WMRC’s 2013 Local Music Awards. The “Station of the Year” award is presented annually by the Massachusetts Broadcasting Association to the most outstanding radio station in the Commonwealth and is open to more than 180 radio stations. p a M e g a r e v Co WMRC-First Class Radio 1490AM continues to be the communities' choice for local news, weather, sports, traffic, event information, local high school, collegiate and professional sports coverage, CNN News and "what's going on" throughout the region. If it's happening around the WMRC listening area, WMRC is either reporting it, or covering it live. WMRC-First Class Radio 1490AM also provides an outstanding variety of “at work” hits from artists like Journey, Kelly Clarkson, Chicago, Lourde and Maroon 5 . Our evening line-up features America’s Best Music with favorites from yester-year like Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Tony Bennett and Patsy Cline. WMRC First Class Radio Sports broadcasted over 75 live local high school sporting events, including 10 MIAA playoff games. Schools covered include: Milford, Hopedale, Medway, Hopkinton, Franklin, Holliston, Bellingham, Valley Tech, Nipmuc, Millis and Whitinsville Christian. WMRC is also your home for the tradition that is Milford Legion baseball. In addition to airing all games on 1490-AM, schools, alums, family and friends are now able to catch their favorite teams and players live from anywhere in the world thanks to our live stream in the Media Center at WMRC Daily News.com. When Station Manager Tom McAuliffe approached the Hospital about doing a Radiothon many years ago, we thought he was crazy. Through his efforts and countless hours of work, WMRC has produced and aired the premier Radiothon in the area. The money raised through their efforts has brought aid and comfort to hundreds if not thousands of local cancer patients and their families. WMRC is a true gem in this region!!! Steven G. Each year just gets better and better! WMRC’s support, through their involvement in programs like the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care, has been incredibly helpful to our Hospital and to the patients and families we serve. Tom and his WRMC family are wonderful people and great colleagues who care deeply about their community. The Radiothon is the major contributor to the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care at Milford Regional Medical Center and without it the fund would not be able to continue providing comfort and care for our neighbors during their battle with cancer. It is always a pleasure to partner with WMRC. Terri McDonald, Director of Public Relations & Marketing -‐ Milford Regional Medical Center In planning a town wide event, there are two intangibles that are absolutely paramount to success: 1) Buzz to build the excitement before the event and 2) Energy to charge the air at the event. Without those, all the pragmatic planning in the world will not give you success. For the past 4 years, we at Celebrate Holliston have depended on Ray Auger of WMRC Milford as our decisive resource on both of these fronts. Pre-‐event, Ray has used his on air talents to built excitement and boost attendance. On the day of our event, Ray’s personality has provided energy and professionalism to our parade & stage. His ability to charge and engage the crowd gave our event that indescribably air of success. Having Ray and WMRC partner with us on Holliston’s largest town event is simply wonderful. (It also helps that Ray is such a fantastic person to work with; not only talented, but dependable and responsible with excellent communication skills). Theresa Lamkin, President of Celebrate Holliston WMRC’s Radiothon to benefit the Milford Regional Medical Center, and in particular the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care, is a tremendous boost for the local area. Over the past seven years WMRC has raised over $300,000 for this cause, and now the sky is the limit. Throughout the year WMRC promotes the Radiothon by creating and sponsoring local events like the Blarney Breakfast and the Rugged Maniac 5K obstacle race, and generally helping the community stay both informed and involved in the Oliva Fund. All in all a phenomenal year round effort that affects the lives too many people to mention. Tony Gallo, Gallo Moving & Storage On Friday, March 15th WMRC presented the First Annual Blarney Breakfast featuring the roast of WMRC News Director Ed Thompson with Senator Richard Moore as Master of Ceremonies. Featured roasters included Milford Superintendent of Schools Bob Tremblay, Milford Police Chief Tom OLoughlin, WMRC Daybreak co-‐host Rick Michaels, Mendon Public Safety Director Ernie Horn and former State RepresentaLve Marie Parente. Live music was performed by Songs for Celildh. The event benefiOed the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care at Milford Regional Medical Center. Scan for highlights! WMRC Radio is THE place to get all the local news, sports and weather. We live in an age of bigger is better, particularly in the media news world where newspapers and small media outlets are disappearing as they are absorb by larger and larger corporations with little to no understanding of who is who and what is what on the local level. Standing tall against that tide is WMRC. That small but powerful radio station provides all the information that people in the Greater Milford Area need. The success of the station in doing so is recognized year after year by its larger peers throughout the state when the time comes to pick a “Station of the Year”, and WMRC continues to win the award. That recognition does not come by accident. The owner and staff at WMRC work tirelessly to perfect their craft and provide the people what they want in an insightful and honest fashion. When a local issue requires in depth analysis or exposure, WMRC provides the experienced voice of Ed Thompson, and he provides the time and opportunity to explore that issue so people are informed and involved in the discussion in a way no other station today does. It is quite common to hear people start their day at the office with a discussion of what they heard on the morning show on WMRC. Radio remains the place where creativity in local media programming remains a vital opportunity and WMRC leads the way in showing other stations how to make that happen. Massachusetts State Representative John Fernandes Each March WMRC honors someone in our community who consistently touches the lives of those around them through their public service. Along with the MACC, WMRC honored the Ellis Family for their generosity in our local community. Butch Moore was a local singing legend, and friend of WMRC, who toured throughout Ireland, Europe, and the United States. His signature song You Touched Upon My Life told the story of a man who touched the lives of so many. With his passing in 2001 WMRC created an award in his honor. In October 2013 WMRC began a search for the area’s coolest local bartender. Over 40 bartenders from local bars and restaurants were on the ballot and were voted on by thousands of WMRC listeners. In the end it was Tommy O’Toole from The Tradesman and Emily Roberts from Pepperoncini’s who were crowned the “coolest”! In 2013 WMRC presented the 2nd Annual Local Music Awards at Pinz in Milford to celebrate the local music community. The night began with a red carpet event as the nominees arrived via limo. The ceremony consisted of 12 live performances and 30 multi-genre awards. Over 500 were in attendance! Scan to see the whole show! The LMAs are a spectacular celebration of what the local artists have accomplished over the past year, voted on by their fans and peers. Every year seems to get better and better. Tom Pile – Local Musician There's nothing better than rubbing elbows and swapping stories with so many talented local musicians. Kev Dagle, Musician The WMRC LMAs is an amazing event! It brings all the best of the local talent, theater and business together under one roof. I have attended two years in a row now and have had an absolute blast both times! I'm so excited for this years event! Tricia Dec, Musician/Music Promoter My first exposure was in 2013, and seeing all the event's sponsors and staff all in sync thanks to Ray and WMRC's selfless efforts was remarkable. And, in the end, it promotes well beyond the varied acts, it also promotes LOCAL BUSINESSES from car services to breweries to sign makers to flatbed rental to photographers and on and on. The event enhances our community, period. Rich Teter – Musician This year the extensive coverage and promotion of the WMRC Local Music Awards earned a Mass Broadcasters Association award for “Best Use of Digital Media” by using all of WMRC’s media platforms to promote this great event! As the former Presiding Justice of our local District Court; for over four decades, as a Trustee of the Milford Regional Medical Center; as a long time Moderator of an area New England Town Meeting and, as a citizen, actively engaged in all aspects of Greater Milford, I have had a unique “front row” seat on our “local scene”. In this regard, it would be impossible to overstate the immense – indeed “indispensable” contribution – “WMRC – First Class Radio” makes to this area. Its broad, incisive coverage of all local events and activities is simply superb. More importantly, the station’s ability to capture, distill and convey the unique sense and spirit of area communities and citizens is surely without parallel. No wonder this truly great station was selected as Massachusetts Broadcasters Association’s “Radio Station of the Year.” The Honorable Francis J. Larkin Prior to the WMRC Local Music Awards, a few nominees got together at the Milford Performing Arts Center for an evening of acoustic original music. This quickly turned into a monthly gathering of local musicians and is now featured as a one hour, monthly show on Milford TV. Scan to see an episode One of the biggest news events in WMRC history was the Foxwoods Massachusetts attempt to build a casino resort in Milford. Starting in 2012 and lasting throughout most of 2013, WMRC News Director Ed Thompson reported on the stories surrounding the efforts, speaking with the major players on both sides, culminating in a on air forum that brought in more than 30 officials to discuss the issue live on the air. In the end the people spoke and the building of a casino was voted down. My wife Donna and I worked closely with WMRC as part of Casino Free Milford's (CFM) radio ad campaign. Tom McAuliffe and Ray Auger offered excellent non-‐biased expertise regarding what we presented for the campaign and delivered top quality radio ads for us. Thank you for helping to keep Milford casino-‐free! Jeff Niro -‐ CFM Board Member Thought I should comment on WMRC’s coverage of the Casino vote in Milford, specifically the two hour special you did featuring the WMRC News Team and Ed Thompson the day before the vote. Without a doubt, this was the best piece of unbiased news reporting I can remember on a local issue ever. It is a testament to WMRC’s fairness and professionalism that every key player, from both sides of the issue, was on hand at the station during the broadcast to offer their prospective on the issue. Ed did a masterful job balancing the time allotted, pro and con, and asking the key questions local voters needed asked in order to flesh out the key points on both sides of the issue. In the end, the ballot question did not pass and I have to feel the fair and balanced airing of the issues provided by WMRC helped many voters with their decision. WMRC is a local treasure and my key source of local news. Thank you for your continued focus on all things local. Stephen R. For the past 40 years, our morning routine includes having on WMRC to listen to the news, weather and more, to get ready for the day ahead. We have also been advertising with WMRC for over 30 years, not only for 1... but 2 businesses. We have personally seen the positive impact our ads have had on both of our businesses and we will continue for years to come. More importantly, we are proud to be affiliated with such a tremendous organization. Their efforts with their fundraisers for the hospital and the cancer center are unbelievable. Milford’s own Chris Colabello Gets Called Up WMRC’s dear friend Chris Colabello’s 2013 baseball season started off much differently than his previous 7 seasons of professional baseball. It started with a spring training invite from the Twins and then an appearance in the much Maligned World Baseball Classic where he powered Team Italy during the tournament with a .333 average. He then went on to destroy the baseball in Triple A and went on to be named InternaLonal League Player of the year! But of course the ulLmate highlight for Chris came on May 22nd when aTer 6 seasons of independent ball, 2 years in the affiliated minors and at the age of 29 he was called up to The Show! WMRC Sports Director MaO Romeling caught up with Chris at McCoy Stadium a few weeks before his call-‐up and although he was opLmisLc he would get a shot soon he was clearly sLll focused on a one day at a Lme approach with his feet firmly grounded. He lit up like a Christmas tree when MaH asked him about the support and help from his family, former high school coaches, teammates and the community of Milford during his career journey thus far. In 2013 for the Twins Chris appeared in 55 games hiXng 7 home runs. He didn’t hit well for average across those games, but now that he has a taste of the Big Leagues and with all he has overcome we would be foolish to count him out now! Chris Colabello! What a Local story in 2013 and good luck to him this Spring! We will all be watching and rooLng for him in Milford…and yes that includes if he is wearing pinstripes! For the second year in a row the WMRC Mudrats traveled to Southwick, MA to participate in the Rugged Maniac along with participants from last year and some new friends. The Rugged Maniac is a 5k obstacle race through muddy terrain. As a team we started together, helped each other throughout and ended together while raising money for the Oliva Fund for Cancer Care. WMRC changed my life forever! A few years back the folks at WMRC started a fitness program called Get Fit For Life. I was selected to participate, and that’s when my life began to change for the better. I found myself, made lifelong friends and became a better person all because of a local radio station…WMRC!!!! I can never repay them for all they have done for me, my family and my community. I am forever thankful for WMRC, you truly changed my life!!! Ed Thompson, who celebrated 46 years with WMRC in 2013, brings you the local news that everyone is talking about straight from the sources. Many of whom frequent the Daybreak studios with their live, in-studio interviews with Ed. Rick Michaels brings you weather, traffic, school lunch menus, sports, lottery numbers and fun and games on a daily basis. Our listeners get informed and get local with WMRC’s Daybreak. Weekdays from 5:30am to 9am. WMRC Day Break News has proven itself to be a first rate source for the police department to disseminate important community and safety information to the public. We rely on WMRC. Milford Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin WMRC is home to some of the best local shows with our weekly topical, informational, and entertaining programming. In 2013 we added 8 new local shows to our line-up. All of these can be heard on 1490 WMRC and live and on demand in the WMRC Media Center on our website. WMRC is always adding diverse and local shows so 2014 promises to be a stellar year! I was approached last spring with an opportunity to participate in the WMRC local programming line-‐up. Wow, I thought – a radio show! A place to share my thoughts, ideas and perspectives around the subject of Spirituality with an audience of interested local, loyal listeners. What a great idea – what a great way to reach an audience of potential clients and customers. While I must admit I was nervous, I decided to go for it and with the support of Tom, Ray and Rick at WMRC I have been enjoying a successful relationship with my audience for over seven months! I am constantly receiving support from my producers Ray and Rick and the station owner Tom responds to any and all questions, comments and concerns I may have with the speed of light! Dr. Cathy Ripley Greene, Psychic Medium – Host of Messages From Spirit WMRC’s Project Poinsettia This past Christmas WMRC brought back one of our most heartwarming promotions ever, Project Poinsettia. We donated and delivered over 100 glorious holiday poinsettia’s to various nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals and senior centers throughout the WMRC listening area. The response was overwhelming. LOCAL is the reason for the season! WMRC Annual Fishing Derby WMRC listeners and fans gathered once again at Louisa Lake in Milford for WMRC’s Annual Fishing Derby, a fun-filled family events that has become a WMRC tradition. Portuguese Parade Another annual tradition for the town of Milford and WMRC is the Portuguese Parade and Picnic in which WMRC Voice of Portugal is a major fixture. WMRC Santa Parade Year after year WMRC proudly participates in the Milford Santa Parade with a vehicle in the parade. This year was a first for WMRC as we broadcasted live! Milford Catholic Elementary Fundraiser Local musician and teacher hosted a night of live music while raising money for Milford Catholic Elementary School with some help from WMRC. WMRC Holiday Change Drive Staff members from WMRC, each year, dedicate two days around the holidays to collect change from Main Street Dunkin Donuts for the Daily Bread Food Pantry. This year we raised just over $3,000! Throughout the year WMRC partners with community organizaLons to help support, promote and entertain at their local events. These relaLonships grow year aTer year and WMRC couldn’t be prouder to be a part of them. Here are just a few events that WMRC was a part of in 2013. Carolyn Dillon Zona, Listener When Trinity Episcopal Church sought to expand its "Community Dinner" program, it found a solid partner in WMRC, the area’s longtime, local radio station. The station's willingness to promote Trinity's meals was instrumental in facilitating the Church's ability to more than double attendance at mealtime, and thereby feed a larger number of hungry citizens. WMRC's popularity and generosity, brought a larger number of local folks to the meals for both nourishment and fellowship. To break bread with our fellow human beings is a gift, and WMRC radio allowed Trinity Church to share that gift with an ever-‐growing community. We're honored to have the station as our partner, and WMRC can take great pride in the positive effect it has on the local community. James E. As a selectman in the Town of Milford, I feel fortunate to have a community-‐based radio station such as WMRC here.
