Headlines Spring 2009 INSIDE THIS ISSUE 2 THANK YOU FOR HAVING A HEART FOR THE HOMELESS 3 CLEANING BASKETS PROVIDED FOR FAMILIES RECORD-SETTING COMMUNITY DONATIONS HELP AREA HUNGRY 4 HASLETT HIGH SCHOOL SUPPORTS HAVEN HOUSE WISH LIST 5 HAVEN HOUSE IS ON FACEBOOK FOOD PANTRY RECEIVES FRESH PRODUCE GREETING CARDS BOARD OF DIRECTORS 6-7 WE ARE GRATEFUL TO HAVEN HOUSE’S CIRCLE OF FRIENDS FROM THE DIRECTOR Haven House renovations are complete, beautiful! H aven House has finally finished all of the renovations! It was a long road from fundraising, to living through moving furniture from one room then to the next, and the dust covering everything. But it is finished, and it is beautiful. The renovations have given us exactly what we needed. Our residents now have privacy and confidentiality when meeting with caseworkers; all resident bathrooms were redone to offer a more cleanly and usable space; we replaced the roof, soffit and fascia; our front door is now handicapped accessible; our food pantry is larger and is handicapped accessible; and our kitchen was completely redone with stainless steel, movable tables. Staff has settled into their spaces, and we are finally done moving things around!! We hosted our Open House on June 15, 2009 to show off the renovations and to thank our supporters. Representative Mark Meadows and East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis began the event with a few words. We had a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a few short words from our funders, the Lansing and East Lansing Rotary Foundations, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Michigan State Housing Development Authority. We served light refreshments and gave tours of the facility for all in attendance. If you missed the event, please stop by any time and ask for a tour—we would love to show you. We are now getting ready for the summer and looking for ways to keep the children busy. We have weekly trips to the Parkwood YMCA so the kids can blow off some steam, and we have several groups scheduled to come to Haven House to provide a day of special activities for them. If you are involved in a group and would like to come out and provide a few hours of fun for our kids, please call Tiffany Chenault. —Angie Mayeaux, Executive Director Thank you for Having a Heart for the Homeless T he Have-A-Heart campaign has been an annual event of Haven House for many years. It serves two very important roles. It is an important source of operating funds for Haven House, and it is an opportunity to increase awareness in the community of the problems faced by homeless families in the Greater Lansing Area and the role that we play in attempting to ameliorate them. We are supported by Coach Suzi Merchant of the MSU Women’s Basketball team, our Honorary Chairperson, and many merchants, professional offices, and other groups who sell hearts for us. We would like to thank the following merchants for participating and helping to inform the community of the important role they can play in helping the homeless: AP Capital Benson’s Vinaigrettes Corey’s Flap Jack - Waverly Flap Jack - Frandor Great Lakes Capital Funds Maurer’s Sanitary Cleaners St. Martha’s School Woody’s Oasis - Trowbridge Woody’s Oasis - Grand River Woody’s Oasis - Okemos Breadsmith Kinawa Middle School Lansing School District *Harold’s Personal Design Group Douglas J *Woven Art *Mindful Movements *Kidz Korner Foods for Living *ThreadBear Fiber Arts Studio *Flats Grill *Indicates the businesses that participated for the first time this year. If you purchased a heart from a merchant who participated in our campaign, we thank you for supporting homeless families. We anticipate other businesses and organizations will be added to the list each year. If you are interested in joining our fundraising campaign, please contact Angie at (517) 337-2731. 5 2 Cleaning baskets provided for families H avensHouse provides exit baskets complete with cleaning supplies to each resident who leaves our program to go into housing. Food drives were sponsored by East Lansing Post Office Letter Carriers, East Lansing High School, City of East Lansing Public Works and All Saints Episcopal Church. Haven House Food Pantry is part of the Greater Lansing Food Bank system. Last year, we served 1,194 food bank recipients and 367 residents of Haven House. For more information about hunger in our community and how you can help, go to www.lansingfoodbank.org. 5 3 Haslett High School supports Haven House T he Vision, Haslett High School’s award-winning television and film program, hosted their 5th telethon, T5. The Vision has been creating films and helping our community for over twelve years. This year, it raised over $14,000 and presented a $7,500 check to Haven House. The Telethon broadcasted live on Channel 22 in Meridian Township from 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 20, 2009, to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, March 21, 2009, and streamed live throughout the world at visiontelethon.com. There were great live performances and web auctions the whole 24 hours, with hundreds of great items you could bid on. This was a student-produced program, and they were amazing!! 5 4 Wish list... n 3 cubic yards of wood chips for play area n 28 new mattresses n 10 flash drives n 3 surge protectors n USB HUB n Paper shredder n Literature holder n New scanner n Handheld vacuum cleaner Haven House is on Facebook! People we try to connect with include community members, employees, service users, and clients. Please visit our page to view photos, recent news, and others connected with Haven House. Food pantry receives fresh produce HAVEN HOUSE BOARD OF DIRECTORS John Charles Guyselman President C lients receiving food assistance through the food pantries are at a high risk for inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables, as emergency food assistance often does not include a supply of fresh produce. Fortunately, The Garden Project of the Greater Lansing Food Bank provided Haven House with 475 lbs. of fresh produce in 2008 to be distributed to its recipients. The estimated cash value for this donation of produce totaled $514. Haven House is thankful to have the support of other local organizations to help provide assistance to needy families in the Lansing area. Gerald W. Smith Vice President Greeting cards Jim Zacks Secretary Susan Sanford Treasurer Carol Brownell Dave Havrilla Debbie Henrie Joseph Maguire Mary McDaniel Delores Nick-Carthell Deborah Toby H aven House has an assortment of Holiday greeting cards that utilize drawings by children who were temporarily residing in Haven House or artwork contributed by friends of Haven House.
