A Winter Tale
Synopsis
A Winter Tale is a 2008 Canadian dramatic feature film, written, directed and
produced by Canadian-Trinidadian filmmaker Frances-Anne Solomon. It features
Canadian star Peter Williams, Jamaican theatre and television icon Leonie Forbes and
well-known Trinidadian comic Dennis "Sprangalang" Hall.
Shots ring out one winter night and a bullet meant for a local street dealer kills a ten
year old boy. While grief and suspicion hang heavily across the downtown Toronto
community of Parkdale, the nightly patrons of Miss G’s Caribbean Take-Away Restaurant
resume their beer and banter rituals. But one of them, Gene Wright, cannot go on. He
begs his friends for help. In a most unusual development, six Black men make a pact to
meet weekly at the restaurant in order to exorcise their demons in the hope of salvaging
their besieged neighbourhood.
Bitter and tragic, funny and hopeful, the film tells a
uniquely Canadian story that features Toronto as a central character.
A Winter Tale is often used very effectively as an educational tool that provokes
cross-generational discussions about violence. Behind its cozy-sounding title there is a
hardcore story about a group of young people of Caribbean heritage who live in Canada.
Solomon’s film shows how the spiraling effect of violence and crime touch not only those
directly involved, but also affects mothers, grandfathers and children. The film tackles
the mystique of the “Bad Man” and the myth of a “better life abroad” both of which too
often govern the dreams and decisions of several young people who leave the Caribbean
for America and Canada. We walk in the shoes of Solomon’s characters and when things
go wrong for them, we suffer too.
A Winter Tale is high tempo and action driven with a surprising twist. Through the
filmmaker’s highly developed storytelling skills, the audience continues to reflect on the
lessons learned.
A Winter Tale premiered at the ReelWorld Film Festival where it won Solomon the
Outstanding Canadian Feature Film Award, as well as Special Mention in the Outstanding
Screenplay category. Subsequently it has been screened around the world to critical
acclaim. Other international awards include: Best Feature Film at the Trinidad & Tobago
Film Festival, Best Editing, Best Cinematography and the Ousmane Sembene Award for
Best Film at the Abuja Film Festival, Best Film by a Black Director at the International
Black Film Festival in Germany, Best Foreign Film at the San Diego Film Festival, and
runner up for the Paul Robeson Diaspora Award at Fespaco 2009 (Africa’s Oscars held
Biannually in Ouaga Dougou, West Africa.
Art for Social Change
Art For Social Change documents a visit by the director and cast of the
Canadian-Caribbean movie “A Winter Tale” to a youth centre in
Trenchtown, Jamaica.
It is very moving to see the impact that the event has on youth in the
area, and the encouragement and power they gain from seeing the film,
which deals with many of their immediate problems living in a high risk
environment.

Synopsis
Jamaican filmmaker Mary Wells made
this perceptive half-hour film, in response to the
launch of Frances-Anne Solomon’s heart-wrenching
movie A Winter Tale (AWT) when it opened in
cinemas across Jamaica in 2008.
There are many similarities between the film’s
story and the present-day realities of crime and gun
violence in Jamaica. Wells’ documentary introduces
us to Michael, an inner-city Kingstonian youth, who
attends the film’s launch, and is so moved by its
relevance to issues in his own community and life
that he decides to take the initiative to arrange
screening in his area.
The documentary shows how powerful film can be
as a tool for discussion, and in strengthening the
efforts of young people to take their lives in to their
own hands in order to change their environment.
Calypso Dreams
Calypso Dreams chronicles the spirit and traditions of Calypso music in
Trinidad and Tobago, dating back to its complex Afro-Caribbean roots in
the 18th and 19th centuries.

Synopsis
The feature-length documentary Calypso Dreams chronicles the
fascinating spirit and traditions of calypso music in Trinidad and Tobago
dating back to its complex Afro-Caribbean roots in the 18th and 19th
centuries.
With narrative commentary by the popular Caribbean musician David
Rudder, the film captures riveting contemporary performances by many
legendary calypsonians with colorful “sobriquets.” It includes the Mighty
Sparrow, Calypso Rose, Lord Superior, Black Stalin, Mighty Bomber, Lord
Blakie, Singing Sandra and Mighty Terror, paying homage to recently
deceased calypsonians such as Lord Kitchener and Lord Pretender. It also
features a rare and exclusive interview with Harry Belafonte about his early
involvement with calypso and his complex relationship with Lord Melody in
the 1950s and early ’60s.
Calypso Dreams uses a rich array of archival footage and
photographs to illustrate how the music was corrupted and homogenized
by the American music industry in the 1940s and 1950s, only to survive and
– ultimately -- thrive in international anonymity. Just like the film, The Buena
Vista Social Club, Calypso Dreams provides a cultural rediscovery by
presenting a musical tradition that has been bypassed by the mainstream
for decades. Not only does the film celebrate the music of calypso, it also
showcases the intense sense of community that calypso engenders in
Trinidad and Tobago. And it traces the dynamic social and political roots
that sustain calypso as an art form.
Dunn and Horne have been friends for thirty years and they began
discussing plans to make a film about calypso twenty years ago, following
Horne’s first trip to Trinidad. They began production on Calypso Dreams in
the winter of 2001 and made six production trips to Trinidad and Tobago in
order to complete the film.

Episode 1 - Vincy Mas – St. Vincent & The Grenadines - E-Zone showcases Carnival celebrations in the
tiny island of St. Vincent recently made famous by Soca Artiste Kevin Lyttle and the filming of the popular
Pirates of the Caribbean. We take a trip to Fort Charlotte, The Botanic Gardens, downtown Kingstown as well
as explore the Mas Camps, meet the local music stars, and jump up with the masqueraders in the streets.
Episode 2 - CARIBANA – Canada - Caribana is the largest street festival in Toronto Canada and takes place
every year during the last week of July and the first week of August. Having its roots in Caribbean Carnival
over 30 years ago, the festival has grown into a major explosion of talent, colour, costume and culinary
delights. Lisa and Jason guide you through the E-Zone’s first visit to Toronto and to Caribana. No visit to TO is
complete without a visit to the Niagara Falls, Young Street and the CN Tower.
Episode 3 – Launch of Moulin Rouge– Canada - Lisa and Jason continue their tour of Canada, featuring the
Launch of Moulin Rouge. The pair also visits the Afropan Panyard & Wildness Mas Camp. EZone also goes
on location at Glow Fete and the Caribana cool down featuring interviews with Shurwayne Winchester , Roy
Cape and many more.
Episode 4 - World Creole Music Festival – Dominica - The Dominica World Creole Music Festival has to be
one of the craziest and headiest music festivals in the Caribbean. Join the E-Zone’s Lisa & Jason as they work
their way through sunset to sunrise, three days in a row, to the strains of Creole music such as Zouk, Compas,
Soukous and Bouyon.. Meet the people of Dominica, but also see why Dominica is called the Nature Island of
the Caribbean.
Episode 5 – Legacy Band Launch – Trinidad - EZone showcases some of the many activities leading up to
Trinidad Carnival with Legacy Band Launch and Poison Band Launch 2005. Lisa and Jason also go behind
the scenes of the Mas Men cookout with bandleaders from Legacy, Poison, Tribe & Genesis.
Episode 6 – Island Events Moulin Rouge Band Launch – Trinidad - Continuing with the lead up to
Carnival, EZone showcases the Moulin Rouge Band Launch interviewing local celebrities such as Flo PG, Gail
Ann & Terry Seales.
Episode 7 - Denise Belfon Birthnite & St. Lucia Carnival - Denise Belfon is one of Trinidad & Tobago’s
sauciest Female Soca Stars. Singing from a tender age she has risen to the ranks of International Soca Star
and performs all over the Caribbean, North America and Europe. Over the past few years Denise has been
celebrating her birthday in fine style with a special concert for her fans and in this episode E-Zone is on hand to
celebrate with her and a cast of Trinidad & Tobago Celebrities.
This Episode also features highlights of St. Lucia Carnival and an interview with the young Jani, perhaps her
last, before her untimely death mere weeks after copping the St. Lucia Calypso Monarch in 2004.
This Episode also includes an interview with Onika Bostic, the 24 year old Trinidadian singer with Antiguan
Band Burning Flames. Onika also passed away in 2004.
Episode 8 - World Soca Music Festival – Trinidad, Paramin Parang - Paramin, Trinidad has become the
place to be every Christmas season & EZone is there to hear some traditional parang music and experience
some local wild meat delicacies. EZone also highlights the Hands Across the Sea reggae
show with interviews from Jah Melody, Queen Omega. Mickey General & Luciano. Wrapping
up a jam-packed show Ezone showcases the World Soca Music Festival 2004 with interviews
from Soca Star KMC to Dancehall Artiste Vybz Kartel.
Episode 9 – CBC Launch – Barbados - E-Zone heads to Barbados for the CBC Launch
featuring interviews with KMC, Levi, Fay Ann Lyons, Tony Matterhorn & Shurwayne
Winchester. EZone then hops over to the island of Nevis to be a part of the Nevis Palm

Episode 1 – Brass Festival 2005 - EZone introduces the world to the very first VIP lounge, inviting guests to sit
back, relax and have a chat!
Episode 2 – Sailing Week – Antigua – EZone hops over to Antigua to check out their Sailing Week Activities and
manages to snag an interview with specially invited guest Sir Richard Branson. EZone then heads to the islands of
St. Maarten & Trinidad to highlight their Carnival and Panorama festivities respectively.
Episode 3 – St. Kitts Music Festival – St. Kitts – EZone takes a break from all the Carnival festivities in the
islands to take in some soulful rhythms at the St. Kitts Music Festival. The episode features interviews from local to
international celebrities, from Bamboo and Rupee to Wyclef Jean and Doug-E-Fresh.
Episode 4 –Crop Over – Barbados – EZone lands in Barbados for some fun in the sun as they take in the
activities leading up to the Crop Over celebrations. On this Episode EZone also highlights Antigua’s Soca Monarch
with interviews from Claudette Peters, Sleepy & Nature Kid.
Episode 5 – Crop Over – Barbados Part 2 – Barbados was so much fun it was split into 2 episodes with Part 2
featuring more activities in the lead up to the Carnival Celebrations as well as revelers on the streets for
Kadooment. This episode also included interviews from local artistes Krosfyah and Edwin Yearwood.
Episode 6 – NottingHill Carnival – London – EZone heads to London to take in the sights and sounds of London
and NottingHill Carnival. From Trini Corner to on the streets for the parade EZone covers it all. The episode also
features interviews with Band Leader Big Mike and Soca Artiste Machel Montano.
Episode 7 – The Allison Hinds Show – EZone highlights an Allison Hinds concert with special guest, fellow Bajan
Rupee. The show also features highlights from St. Lucia Jazz.
Episode 8 – Chutney Soca Monarch – Chutney Music is a huge part of the culture of Trinidad & EZone heads to
the Annual Chutney Soca Monarch Competition to check out all the action and chat with some of the local Chutney
Artistes including Rooplal G, Adesh Samaroo,
Hitman & Edward Ramdass.
EZone also
continues the Carnival Celebrations with a stop
at Insomnia Fete 2006 where they catch up
with Machel Montano & Doug-E-Fresh.

Episode 1 – Masquerade – Season 6 starts with a bang, giving the viewers a glimpse into the world of
Shurwayne Winchester as EZone follows him from the gym to the stage in Grenada. EZone then heads back
to Trinidad to catch up wth Masquerade Mas Camp and Legacy Band leaders Big Mike and Juliette.
Episode 2 – Peacefest – This EZone episode features the first annual Peacefest as well as a trip to Poison’s
Mas Camp.
Episode 3 – Legacy – Trinidad – This EZone Episode catches up with band leader Big Mike at Legacy Mas
Camp and also takes in the sites and sounds of the Soca in Moka fete which features performances by
Maximas Dan and Destra.
Episode 4 – Amnesia – Trinidad – With Trinidad Carnival just around the corner, Ezone delves into all the
activities that lead up to Carnival. From partying at Amnesia to checking out the Mas Camp of Brian
MacFarlane, EZone has it all covered.
Episode 5 – Bishops & Tribe Fete – Trinidad – This EZone Episode features segments highlighting the
events leading up to Trinidad Carnival. EZone heads to Bishops Fete to check out all the performances and
chat with artistes and guests alike. EZone then checks out preparations for Carnival at the Tribe Mas Camp.
Episode 6 – Yorke Fete / Veterans – Chalkie – Trinidad – EZone is in Trinidad prepping for Carnival and
heads to Yorke All Inclusive with performances by Patrice Roberts and Zan. EZone also introduces a new
segment Veterans featuring an interview and performance with Chalkdust.
Episode 7 – Panorama 2006 – Trinidad – With Carnival Season in Trinidad in full swing the EZone crew
heads to Panorama in the Queens Park Savannah, to take in some sweet sounds of Pan and chat with the
party-goers. This episode also features a segment with renowned artiste Singing Sandra.
Episode 8 – St. Maarten Regatta / Veterans – Lord Nelson – EZone Heads to St. Maarten for their annual
Regatta and features not only the sailing race but also the after party with a perfomance by Destra. EZone
also continues its Veterans segment with an interview & performance by Lord Nelson.
Episode 9 – St. Lucia Kalalu Festival / Veterans – Black Stalin – EZone checks out the Kalalu Music

Episode 10 – Brass Fete 2006 / Veterans – Denyse Plummer – Trinidad – Brass Festival is one of the most
well known parties on the local scene and EZone gives you all access to this fun filled fete with interviews from

Episode 12 – EZone Germany Special – The EZone series comes to a close with this hourlong episode. The EZone crew heads to Germany to support Trinidad & Tobago in the quest
for the World Cup.

series.

Music fans will gain a deeper appreciation for the
sounds of the Caribbean, with Heart Beat - a unique 13episode documentary series which showcases CanadianCaribbean musicians and explores the hearts, minds and
worlds of some of Canada's most dynamic musical
creators.
The series was created by award winning filmmaker,
writer and producer Frances-Anne Solomon and produced
through CaribbeanTales and Leda Serene Films, in
association with Bravo!, and Gayelle Television.
Each of Heart Beat's half-hour episodes tells the
story of a different Caribbean performer, and explores the
depth of their artistry. Live footage and dynamic
performances will enthuse viewers, as 13 celebrated
musicians share their cultural heritage and experiences
with viewers.
Heart Beat features such performers as: Muhtadi,
Kobo Town, Nick "Brownman" Ali, The Sattlites and
Saidah Baba Talibah, among others. It is directed with
panache and passion by Lana Lovell, Safiya Randera, Paul
Nguyen, Justin Lovell, Alberto Suarez and Mars Horodyski

7) Tara Woods: Aka Macomere Fifi Before she became 'Macomere Fifi', award-winning Calypso Queen, she
was Tara Woods, Through charting Woods' progression from church chorister to Caribbean folk singer to
formidable character on the male-dominated Calypso scene, this documentary reveals the evolution and
inspiration of calypso, Canadian-style. 8) Mojah: Moving With the Times Born in Trinidad, Mojah moved to Canada in 1972. He was a founding
member of bands such as Truths and Rights, Compass and V, as well as an accomplished songwriter for
bands such as Big Sugar.
9) Ian Jones: Activist and Artist, How the Steelpan is Changing Lives Ian Jones is a legendary steel pan
player and composer. He uses his musical art to give marginalized youth discipline and hope for the
future by teaching the steel pan instrument. Mr. Jones continues to serve both as an innovative musician
and social activist for the betterment of our young people today.
10) Sara Renelik: Reawakening Sara Renelik is a Montreal-born and based
singer, choreographer, dancer of Haitian descent.Previously toured and
performed with Cirque de Soleil, Celine Dion. She backed numerous artists
such as Yaya Diallo, Eval Manigat and Yves Dechary. Has lead own band
touring Canada, US and Germany since 1999.
11) Tanya Mullings: Music is my Life Multi Award winning Canadian pioneer
Tanya Mullings currently holds the title as "Top Female Artist" with the 2007
RMAA & CRMA. Internationally recognized Tanya has dedicated 20 years & 4

Hit For Six! is a full-length feature film that tells the story of a playboy
West Indies cricketer still fighting the demons of his past that include a match
fixing charge. He learns about love as he struggles for his last chance to play in
a major global tournament. And he desperately wants to earn the respect of his
estranged father, a former great West Indies cricketer.
This inspirational and emotional drama, punctuated with excitement,
intrigue and love, recounts how Alex Nelson, a talented but inconsistent
cricketer has been sidelined from the West Indies team for scuffling with his
coach, Amir Misra of India. He has now been blackballed by the team for three
years. Still, he pursues an unlikely quest to get back on the team for a last
chance to play in the Global One Day Series.

Synopsis
This extraordinary video chronicles the history of slavery through the eyes of
Caribbean women. A striking combination of monologue, dance, and song - griotstyle – it conveys a young African woman’s quest for survival in the New World.
Grace Nichols' collection of poems tells the story of a young African woman
uprooted from her homeland and transported to slavery in the Caribbean.
Drawing inspiration from her sisters and brothers, the Amerindians and the
Maroon Warriors of the Haitian Revolution, she plots her own. First she dreams '
the birthplace of all revolts ' and then she resolves to take action. She knows
through bitter experience that freedom is never given. With her re-remembered
African Goddesses and Gods she claims her hour, and her identity, out of sorrow
and pain. Finally she welcomes victory by liberating herself, and begins the
process of healing.
The poems are performed by two Narrators. The first, played by Adjoa Andoh, is
a young girl, painfully trying to come to terms with her enforced reality. The
second, Leonie Forbes, is a mature woman who has seen and survived all. The
dramatic narration is juxtaposed with dance sequences performed by Malisha
Adlum, Eusebia Suffren and Steve Wright, and archive stills of enslavement and
revolt. environment.

personal experience, ancestry, and migration; between
Canada and the Caribbean; between the artist and the
art.
Literature Alive is a many-faceted educational series,
produced by Toronto-based CaribbeanTales in
partnership with Leda Serene Films. Originally
commissioned for Bravo! Canada and first broadcast in
October 2005, The multimedia package is comprised of
a website, audio books and a CBC radio series.

9.) Jemeni (Joanne Gairy): Jemeni in the City -- Love of the oral tradition and her broad experience as a poet, spoken
word artist, author, mentor, public speaker, hip-hop artist, and radio host made her a successful performance artist.
10.) M NourBese Philip: Word Hammers -- She is a poet, novelist, and former lawyer. Not one to sit still, she takes on
a power walk through the park with her friend Dr Patricia Saunders and explores her use of language as a weapon..
11.) Olive Senior: Gardening with Olive – Her work explores moral issues -- for example, the environmental crisis
brought on by single-crop agriculture and deforestation. But she handles her subjects with subtle irony and humor and
her tone is always relaxed.
12.) Pam Mordecai: Her True True Name – Her poetry collections that make vital links between Canada and Jamaica.
Her writings contain a wide range of themes, among which are extraordinary family relations, family histories, school and
community, exile and migration, Jamaican rural culture.
13.) Louise Bennett: Miss Lou Then and Now -- Miss Lou’s unique reputation is based on the body of literature in the
Jamaican nation language -- in poetry, drama, comedic performance and Jamaican folklore -- that she has produced and
promoted the world over.
14.) Ramabai Espinet: Coming Home -- Espinet usually explores themes and issues that relate to her IndoCaribbean heritage. She also writes about the seminal influence of European empire on identity, class, religion and
politics in Caribbean communities

15.) Creation Fire: Part 1 -- In May 2005, Jamaica's Calabash Literary Festival celebrated its fifth year. The theme of the
festival was The Fire Is Lit and searing performances by international stars Staceyann Chin, Mutabaruka, Linton Kwesi
Johnson and Canada's own Dionne Brand live up to that promise.
16.) Creation Fire: Part 2 -- “I never doubted that Caribbean literature had international appeal,” says Colin Channer
founder of the hugely successful Calabash Literary Festival that explodes like a rock concert in Treasure Beach, Jamaica
every year, “because I grew up with the huge impact of Bob Marley on world culture.”
17.) The Gimi Story: Part 1-- On Sunday, September 12th, 2004, the Island of Grand Cayman was devastated by class 5
Hurricane Ivan. Against all odds, the Gimmistory Festival forged ahead to bring Caribbean Story-tellers and performance
artists to the Island of Grand Cayman.
18.) The Gimi Story: Part 2 -- For the past 6 years, the Cayman National Cultural Foundation has been hosting a
Caribbean story-telling festival called Gimmistory. In this documentary, the authors showcase the importance of calypso
and extempo in the tradition of Caribbean storytelling.
19.) Rachel Manley: In the Shadow of My Fathers -- It was Manley's grandmother, Edna, widely known for her artistic
work in Jamaica who first encouraged her to investigate her creative side. Manley published her first poem in at the age
of 11 and went on to become a well-known poet.
20.) Honor Ford Smith: Honor-Bound – For most of her childhood, she lived with her grandmother who, she contends,
was the person that first instilled an acute sense of race and its complexities into her consciousness. Her single mother,
on the other hand, was one of an early generation of Jamaican women doctors of colour and influenced Ford-Smith's
awareness of women’s roles in former colonial societies.
LORD HAVE MERCY!
This comedy about inter-generational conflict is
hilarious,but also covers taboo subjects in the
Caribbean community, such as abortion, and mature
dating. With these and other controversial topics, like
Black on Black racism, issues of adjustment, and
problems in relationships there’s great potential to stir
up discussion.

Youth Pastor Dwight Gooding (Arnold Pinnock) wants it all. He recently married his wife, the
beautiful and voluptuous Desiree (Rachel Price) and now that he’s finally finished his ministerial studies,
he’s determined to make big changes at Mount Zion, a church located in the heart of the Caribbean
community in Toronto.
Enter Pastor Cuthbert Stevens (Dennis “Sprangalang” Hall), a well-respected West Indian
preacher. Easy-going and charismatic, Pastor Stevens is close to retirement. He really cannot be
bothered by the many hair-brained schemes of the ambitious but socially Youth Pastor. The two
compete for the loyalty and attention of the church group that includes Pastor Stevens’ faithful assistant
Hope McCauley (Leonie Forbes); Hope’s outspoken, brash and rebellious seventeen yearold
granddaughter, Crystal (d’bi Young); Hope’s grandson and hip-hop producer Kent (Shawn “Singlefoot”
Singleton); Gooding’s best friend Ryan (Russell Peters), Pastor Stevens’ sometime drinking and domino buddy Father
White (Louis Negin). And of course there’s Marty (Gary Farmer) who helps out at the church when he’s not trying to woo
Hope.Youth Pastor Gooding has his work cut out for him.
Lord Have Mercy! is a refreshingly new and funny take on church life. Set firmly in the tradition of British sitcom
classics like Desmond and Bless Me Father, the series takes familiar universal threads of everyday multicultural life. You’ll
never look at church in quite the same way again.
Episode 1: Honeymoon Done! Gooding is determined to make his mark as an up and coming Pastor at Mount Zion. But
when the pompous, newly minted, Pastor Gooding arrives downstairs and starts to change things around, Hope reacts
the only way she can to this interloper - she has a conniption and throws Gooding out!
Episode 2: Who the Cap Fits. Hope loses her mind when she finds a chocolate scented condom in Crystal's bag.
Episode 3: Tangled Web. Pastor Stevens has courtside tickets to a Raptor's game. Unfortunately for him it's the same
day as a big church event. Instead of telling the truth, Stevens and Father White tell a series of lies and get themselves
into more trouble.
Episode 4: The Flesh is Weak (The Mind is Willing). Crystal develops a crush on Gooding. Between doing the right
thing and being flattered Gooding has his hands full.
Episode 5: Deranged Marriage. Ryan is in love. But in the process he gets kicked out of his house, has to crash at
Mount. Zion and ends up driving everyone crazy.
Episode 6: The Choir. Crystal is inspired to start a Youth Choir. When Desiree gets wind of this she wants in, but Crystal
is having none of it. She declares "The Youth Choir is for youth," and sparks fly.
Episode 7: The Date Desiree tries to set up the odd couple of Sister Hope and
Marty. Her task is harder than she thought, especially with the awkward Marty
and prideful Hope, while Hope's grandson, Kent, does his best to foil her plan.
Desiree has her work cut out for her.
Episode 8: Backsliding. Kent decides that he is going to save souls. But he
has a hard time with the lost sheep at Mount Zion. Shaken, he ends up with
Ryan and falls back into his old bad habits!
Episode 9: The Barrel. When Gooding hears that a hurricane is heading for
Jamaica, he decides that it could be good publicity for the church, (and
himself), to send barrels full of relief supplies ahead of the hurricane. Hope
says it sounds like sacrilege, so Gooding takes care of the business deals
himself.
Episode 10: The Prodigal Pastor. Hope's long lost brother, fast talking Pastor
Nicey, arrives at Mt. Zion and takes the whole church for a holy-ghost swindle.
Episode 11: Immigration Blues. Gooding decides to organize Mount Zion.
But he ends up doing more damage than good when it turns out that Desiree
doesn't have her papers and Marty refuses to get them.
Episode 12: Blood is Thicker Crystal asks Pastor Stevens to take her for an
abortion. Mt. Zion is outraged. Gooding asks for Steven's resignationand Hope
leaves.
Episode 13: Greener Pastures (Retirement)
With Hope gone, Pastor Stevens feels out of step and announces his
retirement. Gooding and Desiree are in over their heads. They have to find a
way to get Hope back and convince Stevens to stay.

On The Map
Synopsis
On the Map is Annalee Davis’ first video project. Her relationships
with two migrant women in particular over the past thirteen years made
her deeply aware of the daily struggles and challenges that Caribbean
migrants were battling. The ongoing attempt at Caribbean regional
integration seemed to her to be functioning in a “top down” fashion.
Annalee made On the Map to present a “bottom up” perspective.
Charcterised by waves of migrant experience, the Caribbean became a
place of confluence, transience and hybridity. For years, Caribbean
people romanticized the struggle to be whole -- to become one. In spite
of this ideal, we remain as fragmented as ever, locked into nationalist
crevices, linguistic divides and exclusivist cultural legitimacy.
The repeated production of idyllic images of an eternal
playground for tourists on the one hand, and notions of the fragmented
region, failed and chaotic on the other mask a complex history.
Caribbean people remain ambivalent about their sense of self.
Continuous questions remain unresolved: What is the Caribbean? What
image of ourselves do we wear and how much do these images
represent our true selves? What is the truth of our own lived realities
and how do we speak to each other of this reality?
Reunion: West Indian Women at War
In 1943, 300 middle-class "colored" women from across the West
Indies were recruited to the ATS, a branch of the British Army.
Reunion: West Indian Women at War documents for the first time
the contribution of these women to WW2.

REUNION
Meeting up for a reunion with her wartime friends, seventy-two year old Hermione
Williams is asked how often she indulged in Buddhist chanting. “Morning and evening”,
she replies. “As often as I can now that I’m having this problem with the Inland
Revenue.” Hermione, a fashion designer, is one of five women who are getting together
again some fifty years after three hundred West Indian women first came to Britain to
serve in the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) so that male soldiers could leave their
desk duties to go to the Front.
It took the War Office two years of infighting to allow Caribbean women of color to
join the ATS, a branch of the British army. Frances-Anne Solomon’s upbeat film makes
good use of some truly appalling War Office internal memos:
“Dear Thomas: In brief we are quite prepared to accept European women from the
colonies, but I must emphasize we cannot accept colored women for service in this
country.”
The documentary also uses archival footage and still photographs of these young
women looking astonishingly exotic in foggy wartime London. These five friends settled
in England afterwards, one to become a Head Teacher while another became a midwife.
Their exuberant pleasure in reliving their comradeship - going through parade-ground
drills, and singing Hitler Has Only Got One Ball - is hugely infectious.
One says she made the journey through U-boat infested waters because: “It was the
way you were brought up.
England is your mother
country and you must do
something to help.” And then
there is the (drily told)
hilarious memory of giving a
pint of blood to a wounded
man who, when he saw her,
was terrified that he might one
day sire a black baby.
A great program, and a fine
example of how to make
a”minority” film with real
mainstream appeal.
WHAT MY MOTHER TOLD ME
Synopsis
The movie What My Mother Told Me is unique in that it is one of
the few works produced by a Trinidadian woman about the paradoxes
and survival strategies of Caribbean women.
Exquisitely beautiful and profoundly moving, What My Mother
Told Me is a dramatic journey towards self discovery.
The story focuses on Jesse, a young woman from England, who
goes to Trinidad to bury her father. Reluctantly she agrees to meet her
mother, whom she thought had abandoned her when she was a child.
Her mother tells her stories, revealing a troubled and violent marriage,
and Jesse is forced to face the truth about her past.
