Welcome to the holiday region Engadin Scuol A landscape of national park quality, the Swiss National Park, the Tarasp Castle, the Engadine Spa Scuol with its Roman-Irish baths, authentic Engadine villages with many historic buildings, a rich Romanic culture that varies from village to village and has been formed by centuries of tradition and local customs. The varied landscape of the ski area, which stretches from Motta Naluns (2146 m) between the villages of Scuol, Ftan, Sent to the highest point Champatsch (2780 m), the cross-country ski trails along the Inn, through the villages from Lavin to Maloja (77 km), winter walking trails, toboggan runs, innovative hotels, holiday apartments, camping grounds and much more: This is the Lower Engadine. An alpine valley on the southern side of the Alps, not overrun by tourism and for many, still a place ‘to be discovered’. Scuol (1250 m): The wellness destination for over 130 years Romanic culture and traditions. Engadine Spa Scuol, the Swiss National Park, ski area and summer attractions. An intact environment and living culture are characteristics of the villages in the Engadine National Park region. A myriad of activities here mean that visitors can really experience the nature and culture of the region. Consisting of two parts, namely Scuol Sura and Scuol Sot, the capital of the Lower Engadine, Scuol is disjoined by the main street. Some 13 km from Scuol lies the village of S-charl. Situated at the entrance to the Swiss National Park this village has existed since the Middle Ages and is based around 13 original houses and a small church. There are three guesthouses and in winter the village can be reached either on foot or by horse drawn carriage. Tarasp-Vulpera, Sent, Ftan Far from the hustle and bustle but easy to get to. Tarasp-Vulpera (1270 – 1400 m) The cradle of spa tourism in the Lower Engadine consists of 10 communities and is a former Austrian exclave that joined the canton of Grisons in 1803. Vulpera, the largest of the ten, is situated on a plateau overlooking the Inn. Tourism started here at the beginning of the last century with the discovery of the curative powers of the local mineral waters. Special highlights include the 9-hole golf course, the tennis hall and the outdoor swimming pool. Below the almost 1000-year-old castle of Tarasp lies the village of Fontana. Here, at the entrance of the Swiss National Park, you find a calm and recuperative ambience. The small ski area with its children’s ski-school, the toboggan trail, natural ice rink and ice-palace ensure that the area is also very attractive in winter. Here you can discover the encounter centre ‘Grotta da cultura’ with its rich cultural programs. There is also the spectacular hanging bridge on the trail to Zuort and the mystical old spa hotel Val Sinestra. The 4-star camping ground in Sur En is situated on the banks of the Inn River and offers high standard of comfort, a swimming pool and a large children’s playground. Open-air-cinema Every second summer the village of Sent is host to an open-air cinema. A big screen and grandstands are constructed in the main village square and for four evenings in July movies are shown. Appearances by local bands as well as food and drinks ensure a well rounded evening. On a sun soaked plateau away from the daily bustle the village of Ftan exists in two parts, Ftan Pitschen and Ftan Grond (small and large). In winter a newly constructed ski lift transports guests directly to the Motta Naluns ski area. The ‘Kinderland’ ski slope on the edge of the village with its magic carpet lift is a great place where beginners can start skiing. The legendary Ftan toboggan run from Prui back to the village provides excellent winter fun. From 2011 the chairlift will also be available in summer for those wanting to wander through the alpine meadows. Susch (1400 m) ‘La Tuor’ and the church characterize the village of Susch. The village is located in a triangle between Scuol, Zernez und Davos. Split by the Inn River, the village along with the Flüela Pass and the Vereina Tunnel form the Lower Engadine’s transportation hub connecting the valley with the northwest of Switzerland. During the heyday of post coach transportation when travelers crossed the Flüela, Susch was a popular village in which to overnight. Ideally situated between Scuol, Val Mustair, the Swiss National Park, Davos Klosters and the Upper Engadine, Susch can be recommended as village from which to base your summer treks or winter ski tours. Visiting the ruins of the ‘Rohan’ tower or taking a Sgraffito course with painter Josin Neuhäusler is also recommended. You can get all the information you need on the area in the local shop the ‘Treffpunkt’. Contact Tourist Information Susch Tel. +41 (0)81 861 22 22 Fax +41 (0)81 861 22 23 info@engadin.com www.scuol.ch/susch Lavin (1432 m) The proximity to the nearby villages and valleys and excellent public transport makes the National Park region an ideal spot for trekking, biking and ski tours. Of special interest is the cross-country ski trail that links with the Engadine marathon trail or in summer the lakes of Macun in the National Park. The architecture and ruins of the village of Gonda are rich in history, while the paintings in the church of Lavin (dating from 1500) are some of the most important in Grisons. The painting is exceptional in that it depicts Christ as ruler of the world while the Holy Trinity is symbolized with four eyes, three mouths and three noses. Contact Tourist Information Lavin Tel. +41 (0)81 861 22 22 Fax +41 (0)81 861 22 23 info@engadin.com www.lavin.ch Guarda (1653 m) Typical architecture of the Engadine, local products and the story of Schellen-Ursli are features of the village of Guarda, with a population of 200, the village sits on a sunny plateau high above the Inn River. Thanks to the public parking area, Guarda has nowadays barely any traffic. The old buildings of Guarda are in pristine condition, which in 1975 earnt the village the Henri-Louis-Wakker prize from the Swiss Cultural Protection Society for exemplary preservation of Guarda’s buildings. The village is characterized by its houses which are colorfully decorated and embossed by Sgraffito giving Guarda the feeling of an outdoor museum. The village is full of life. Farmers, craftsmen and artisans populate the village and offer their products and services. Architecturally it is one of the most valuable villages to be found anywhere. 6 Contact Tourist Information Guarda Tel. +41 (0)81 862 23 42 Fax +41 (0)81 862 21 66 guarda@engadin.com www.scuol.ch/guarda Ardez, Ramosch-Vnà, Tschlin The showpiece of Engadine history. Ardez (1460 m) The ruins of the Steinsberg castle including the remains of the Saint Luzius Chapel are the village of Ardez’s landmarks. The village is a model of Romanic culture and in winter has a small ski lift on the slopes above. The area has been marked by the WWF as being of cultural importance and is protected. Legendary tales from the castle At the castle ruins you will not only find a stunning view over the roofs of Ardez and the mountains of the Engadine, there also awaits thrilling sagas and legendary tales from the Middle Ages. For those who are interested in the past as much as in the present of Ardez is welcome to take part in one of the tours that are regularly conducted in both German and English. Ramosch is one of the driest places in Switzerland and is known for being the warmest of the Engadine villages. The mild climate and good soils once made Ramosch to the breadbasket of the Engadine. The ruins of the ‘Tschanüff’ castle are of historical importance and are under monument protection, while the area around the castle is also home to unique fauna. In Vna the project ‘Ein Dorf wird zum Hotel’ has changed a village into a hotel. Completed in 2008 the guest house ‘Piz Tschütta’ forms the main part of the hotel with ten rooms and reception, a dining room and a small store. Further 13 guest-rooms have been put together by locals in the surrounding private houses giving the village an income and secure future. The population of Tschlin is very innovative. Since 2005 the traditional beer ‘Biera Engiadinaisa’ is once again being brewed here and growing the unique brewing barley for the beer has created a new income stream for the local organic farmers. This organically certified beer has a uniquely herb taste which it owes to crystal clear spring water and the skill of the brewing master. Taking part in a tour through the brewery followed by a visit to a cheese maker afterwards and beer fondue is a great way to discover Tschlin. Further information Tourist Information Scuol Tel. +41 (0)81 861 22 22 info@engadin.com www.scuol.ch Farming The greatest tourism potential in the region is the unique landscapes in the valley that have been greatly influenced by farming. As a result, there is a great deal of cooperation between tourism, farming and environmental protection. This means that farming in the Lower Engadine plays an important role in the community and its culture. The Lower Engadine populace identifies strongly with the local farming tradition, and experiencing the area is more authentic as a result of host commitment. Here you can, for example, learn how to milk goats in Tuffarolas, make cheese in Lavin or discover the alpine meadows above Tschlin. With binoculars, patience, a keen eye and a bit of luck you find the wildlife by yourself. The best place for wildlife viewing is in the Mingèr valley in the National Park. Wildlife experts regularly conduct guided tours and are able to explain the eco-systems found in the National Park. A yearly highlight is the tours during the stag roar in autumn. You can find these tours (in German) in the brochure ‘85 ausgewählte Erlebnisse’. The best Theme Trails A highpoint for young and old. The Schellen Ursli Trail, Guarda First published in 1945, the children’s book ‘A bell for Ursli’ by Alois Carigiet and Selina Chönz is the story of a boy from a family of alpine farmers who needs to find a bell in order to take part in the ‘Chalandamarz’ procession. The book is still, today, a bestseller. The Schellen Ursli trail in Guarda (the village in which the story takes place) is an inviting experience that is especially attractive as a family outing. 20 information plaques placed along the trail relate the story in Romanic, German and English and give insight into the local fauna. On each plaque you will find a game or interactive task. The trek takes from 2 to 4 hours and brochures with information about the trail are available at the local Tourist Information Offices. Along this trail you will find info plaques that tell the story of Flurina and the wild birds. This story is about a young girl who together with her parents shifts into a barn for the summer. One day while watching the goats Flurina rescues a young orphaned bird … The area around Motta Naluns is especially suitable for this trail; it is the Lower Engadine that inspired the authors and made this region the home of both Schellen Ursli and Flurina. A combined pass includes the following: Use of the cablecar Motta Naluns, the bathing and sauna areas in the Engadine spa Scuol, the Quadras indoor swimming pool and the Trü sports centre during the validity of the pass. As well as the 1-Franc package (see page 45), there are also other packages that combine public transport with multi-day ski passes. Thanks to the ski and sport buses you can get to and from the ski-area quickly and efficiently. 47 Cross-country Skiing Because this is where world-champions are made. Scuol – Martina: over 20 km along the frozen Inn There are over 77 kilometers of prepared trails for both classic and skating styles between Susch and Martina. Besides the newly opened ‘Loipa Dario Cologna’ training trail dedicated to the World Cup and Olympic champion, the 28 km loop trail between Scuol and Martina is a highlight for any crosscountry skier. For 35 years this trail has been used for the ‘Passlung Martina – Scuol’ cross country race. From Giarsun, Lavin and Susch you will find trails linking to the Engadine Ski Marathon Trail. In Ardez, Ftan, Tarasp and on Motta Naluns you will find prepared trails with a range of challenges.
