Welcome to the holiday region
Engadin Scuol
A landscape of national park quality,
the Swiss National Park, the Tarasp
Castle, the Engadine Spa Scuol with its
Roman-Irish baths, authentic Engadine
villages with many historic buildings, a
rich Romanic culture that varies from
village to village and has been formed
by centuries of tradition and local
customs.
The varied landscape of the ski area,
which stretches from Motta Naluns
(2146 m) between the villages of Scuol,
Ftan, Sent to the highest point Champatsch (2780 m), the cross-country ski
trails along the Inn, through the villages
from Lavin to Maloja (77 km), winter
walking trails, toboggan runs, innovative
hotels, holiday apartments, camping
grounds and much more: This is the
Lower Engadine. An alpine valley on the
southern side of the Alps, not overrun
by tourism and for many, still a place ‘to
be discovered’.

infrastructure make Scuol an ideal place
to visit at any time of the year.
Some 13 km from Scuol lies the village of
S-charl. Situated at the entrance to the
Swiss National Park this village has
existed since the Middle Ages and is
based around 13 original houses and a
small church. There are three guesthouses and in winter the village can be
reached either on foot or by horse
drawn carriage.
Tarasp-Vulpera, Sent, Ftan
Far from the hustle and bustle but easy to get to.
Tarasp-Vulpera (1270 – 1400 m)
The cradle of spa tourism in the Lower Engadine consists of
10 communities and is a former Austrian exclave that joined the
canton of Grisons in 1803. Vulpera, the largest of the ten, is
situated on a plateau overlooking the Inn. Tourism started here
at the beginning of the last century with the discovery of the
curative powers of the local mineral waters. Special highlights
include the 9-hole golf course, the tennis hall and the outdoor
swimming pool. Below the almost 1000-year-old castle of
Tarasp lies the village of Fontana. Here, at the entrance of the
Swiss National Park, you find a calm and recuperative ambience.
The small ski area with its children’s ski-school, the toboggan
trail, natural ice rink and ice-palace ensure that the area is also
very attractive in winter.

Sent (1440 m)
Distinctive culture, architecture, migrant stories and international
trekking and biking trails are features of the village that stands
proudly between Val Sinestra and Val d’Uina. Here you can
discover the encounter centre ‘Grotta da cultura’ with its rich
cultural programs. There is also the spectacular hanging bridge on
the trail to Zuort and the mystical old spa hotel Val Sinestra.
The 4-star camping ground in Sur En is situated on the banks of
the Inn River and offers high standard of comfort, a swimming
pool and a large children’s playground.
Open-air-cinema Every second summer the village of Sent
is host to an open-air cinema. A big screen and grandstands are
constructed in the main village square and for four evenings
in July movies are shown. Appearances by local bands as well
as food and drinks ensure a well rounded evening.

Ftan (1650 m)
The combination of Ftan Grond, Ftan Pitschen, a renowned
boarding school and the famous Hotel Paradies. On a sun
soaked plateau away from the daily bustle the village of Ftan
exists in two parts, Ftan Pitschen and Ftan Grond (small and
large). In winter a newly constructed ski lift transports guests
directly to the Motta Naluns ski area. The ‘Kinderland’ ski slope
on the edge of the village with its magic carpet lift is a great
place where beginners can start skiing. The legendary Ftan
toboggan run from Prui back to the village provides excellent
winter fun. From 2011 the chairlift will also be available in
summer for those wanting to wander through the alpine
meadows.

Susch, Lavin, Guarda
Formed by history and culture.
Susch (1400 m)
‘La Tuor’ and the church characterize the village of Susch. The
village is located in a triangle between Scuol, Zernez und Davos.
Split by the Inn River, the village along with the Flüela Pass
and the Vereina Tunnel form the Lower Engadine’s transportation
hub connecting the valley with the northwest of Switzerland.
During the heyday of post coach transportation when travelers
crossed the Flüela, Susch was a popular village in which to
overnight. Ideally situated between Scuol, Val Mustair, the Swiss
National Park, Davos Klosters and the Upper Engadine, Susch
can be recommended as village from which to base your summer
treks or winter ski tours. Visiting the ruins of the ‘Rohan’
tower or taking a Sgraffito course with painter Josin Neuhäusler
is also recommended. You can get all the information you
need on the area in the local shop the ‘Treffpunkt’.

Lavin (1432 m)
The proximity to the nearby villages and valleys and excellent
public transport makes the National Park region an ideal spot
for trekking, biking and ski tours. Of special interest is the
cross-country ski trail that links with the Engadine marathon
trail or in summer the lakes of Macun in the National Park.
The architecture and ruins of the village of Gonda are rich in
history, while the paintings in the church of Lavin (dating
from 1500) are some of the most important in Grisons. The
painting is exceptional in that it depicts Christ as ruler of
the world while the Holy Trinity is symbolized with four eyes,
three mouths and three noses.

Guarda (1653 m)
Typical architecture of the Engadine, local products and the
story of Schellen-Ursli are features of the village of Guarda, with
a population of 200, the village sits on a sunny plateau high
above the Inn River. Thanks to the public parking area, Guarda
has nowadays barely any traffic.
The old buildings of Guarda are in pristine condition, which
in 1975 earnt the village the Henri-Louis-Wakker prize from the
Swiss Cultural Protection Society for exemplary preservation
of Guarda’s buildings. The village is characterized by its houses
which are colorfully decorated and embossed by Sgraffito
giving Guarda the feeling of an outdoor museum. The village
is full of life. Farmers, craftsmen and artisans populate the
village and offer their products and services. Architecturally it
is one of the most valuable villages to be found anywhere.

Ardez, Ramosch-Vnà, Tschlin
The showpiece of Engadine history.
Ardez (1460 m)
The ruins of the Steinsberg castle including the remains of the
Saint Luzius Chapel are the village of Ardez’s landmarks. The
village is a model of Romanic culture and in winter has a small
ski lift on the slopes above. The area has been marked by the
WWF as being of cultural importance and is protected.
Legendary tales from the castle At the castle ruins you will
not only find a stunning view over the roofs of Ardez and the
mountains of the Engadine, there also awaits thrilling sagas
and legendary tales from the Middle Ages. For those who are
interested in the past as much as in the present of Ardez is
welcome to take part in one of the tours that are regularly
conducted in both German and English.

Ramosch-Vnà (1230/1630 m)
The famous church and imposing tower bear witness to the
historical importance of the area. Ramosch is one of the driest
places in Switzerland and is known for being the warmest of the
Engadine villages. The mild climate and good soils once made
Ramosch to the breadbasket of the Engadine. The ruins of the
‘Tschanüff’ castle are of historical importance and are under
monument protection, while the area around the castle is also
home to unique fauna. In Vna the project ‘Ein Dorf wird zum
Hotel’ has changed a village into a hotel. Completed in 2008 the
guest house ‘Piz Tschütta’ forms the main part of the hotel with
ten rooms and reception, a dining room and a small store.
Further 13 guest-rooms have been put together by locals in the
surrounding private houses giving the village an income and
secure future.

Tschlin (1550 m)
High above the valley floor Tschlin on the border of Austria and
Italy along with the villages of Strada and Martina forms the
eastern entrance to the Engadine Valley. The population of
Tschlin is very innovative. Since 2005 the traditional beer ‘Biera
Engiadinaisa’ is once again being brewed here and growing the
unique brewing barley for the beer has created a new income
stream for the local organic farmers. This organically certified
beer has a uniquely herb taste which it owes to crystal clear
spring water and the skill of the brewing master. Taking part in a
tour through the brewery followed by a visit to a cheese maker
afterwards and beer fondue is a great way to discover Tschlin.

Young ibex in the Swiss National Park
Where mainly the animals

With its 170 km2 the Swiss National Park
is the largest protected area in Switzerland. Because of it having the highest
level of protection nature is left to run
its course. Here humans remain in
the background and are witness to the
dynamic processes that give this
landscape its character. Besides the
many trekking trails in the park there is
also the interactive exhibition at the
Visitors Centre in Zernez, which is highly
recommended.

Experiencing Nature
Getting back to nature.
The Swiss Pine Forest of ‘God da Tamangur’
The forest of God da Tamangur is the highest stand of Swiss
Pine in Europe. At its highest point the forest reaches some 2330
meters above sea level. The God da Tamangur is not only a
valuable ecosystem but also a powerful symbol for the local
Romanic culture. The forest has been protected since 2007 and
is now a forest reservation. Three plaques in the area give
visitors information on the special nature of the forest.

The Mingèr valley
Rich in wildlife the Mingèr valley stretches away from the S-charl
valley to the ridge of Sur il Foss which forms the border to the
Plavna valley. Here diverse landscapes abound, from the fir and
larch forests of the lower valley to the Swiss pines that border
the open alpine landscapes around Alp Mingèr. There is also a
rich diversity of fauna, and here one can observe Chamois, Deer,
Golden Eagles and if you are lucky a Bearded Vulture. In summer
there a regular guided tours to this protected valley. Game
viewing in autumn is a special highlight here when the stags are
in the roaring season.

The Alpine Lakes of Macun
The lake plateau of Macun above the community of Lavin
encompasses over 20 unique alpine lakes both large and small.
This is a good place to see the ‘king of the Alps’ the alpine
Ibex. From Lavin you can easily reach all the National Park
hiking trails by train or by bus or alternatively you can
overcome the first few meters of climbing from Lavin or
Zernez by taxi (reservation required). Hiking in the National
Park requires good physical condition, coordination and of
course suitable equipment.
In the Munt Baseglia area there is a chance of snow and icy
trails depending on the time of year.

in Europe the ‘God da Tamangur’ and the Costainas pass.
Here you can travel by foot unencumbered by luggage from the
Lower Engadine to the Mustair valley. Your luggage is transferred from each overnight spot to the next.

Farming
The greatest tourism potential in the region is the unique
landscapes in the valley that have been greatly influenced by
farming. As a result, there is a great deal of cooperation
between tourism, farming and environmental protection. This
means that farming in the Lower Engadine plays an important
role in the community and its culture. The Lower Engadine
populace identifies strongly with the local farming tradition, and
experiencing the area is more authentic as a result of host
commitment. Here you can, for example, learn how to milk
goats in Tuffarolas, make cheese in Lavin or discover the alpine
meadows above Tschlin.

Wildlife Viewing
From the Alpine Ibex that adorns the crest of Grisons and the
proud roaring stags and their hinds to Chamois, many types of
wildlife can be viewed in the valleys and forests of the Lower
Engadine. With binoculars, patience, a keen eye and a bit of
luck you find the wildlife by yourself.
The best place for wildlife viewing is in the Mingèr valley in the
National Park. Wildlife experts regularly conduct guided tours
and are able to explain the eco-systems found in the National
Park. A yearly highlight is the tours during the stag roar in
autumn. You can find these tours (in German) in the brochure
‘85 ausgewählte Erlebnisse’.

The Lischana Trail
Three days of movement and recuperation, nature and culture is
what the «Senda Lischana» is all about. The highlight of this
trail is a two day mountain hike from Scuol over the Chamanna
Lischana to the Lai da Rims and onto the historically interesting
Uina gorge. Following checking into your hotel there is a 3-hour
climb to the Chamanna Lischana hut with a full backpack to be
surmounted. After an overnight in the age-old Swiss Alpine
Club hut the second day you climb over the lake plateau of Rims
and descend through the Uina gorge on the way back to Scuol

Just as attractive as the trails themselves
are the innumerable restaurants and
guest-houses both along and at the end

spacious sun terrace and panoramic view
of the Dolomites of the Lower Engadine.
You can find information about other

The best Theme Trails
A highpoint for young and old.
The Schellen Ursli Trail, Guarda
First published in 1945, the children’s book ‘A bell for Ursli’ by
Alois Carigiet and Selina Chönz is the story of a boy from a
family of alpine farmers who needs to find a bell in order to take
part in the ‘Chalandamarz’ procession. The book is still, today, a
bestseller. The Schellen Ursli trail in Guarda (the village in which
the story takes place) is an inviting experience that is especially
attractive as a family outing.
20 information plaques placed along the trail relate the story in
Romanic, German and English and give insight into the local
fauna. On each plaque you will find a game or interactive task.
The trek takes from 2 to 4 hours and brochures with information
about the trail are available at the local Tourist Information
Offices.

The Flurina Trail, Motta Naluns
This trail starts at Prui and ends at the mountain station of Motta
Naluns, it takes about one hour. Along this trail you will find info
plaques that tell the story of Flurina and the wild birds. This story
is about a young girl who together with her parents shifts into
a barn for the summer. One day while watching the goats
Flurina rescues a young orphaned bird …
The area around Motta Naluns is especially suitable for this trail;
it is the Lower Engadine that inspired the authors and made
this region the home of both Schellen Ursli and Flurina.

The Bear Trail of S-charl, S-charl
In the village of S-charl bordering the National Park a new trail
has been established based on the bear. Here, where over a
century ago the last bear was hunted and killed, both young
and old get to learn about this large predator at the Bear
Museum and through nine interactive information plaques
placed along the trails.
This trail takes about two hours and its goal is to create
acceptance in interest in this subject as well as being fun for
participants. A rest area, various installations and a bear
themed playground at the end of the trail round off this eco
friendly activity.

The terraced landscape around Tschlin is well known for its
rich variety of flowers, butterflies and birds. The blister
buster trail with its information plaques and interesting
information about local nature and culture is a family friendly
outing. The trail from Tschlin to Strada takes about two
hours and both places can easily be reached by post bus.
The Scuol-Ftan-Tarasp-Sent region contains over 20 natural
mineral water springs, the foundation of the Lower Engadine
spa tourism. The mineral water trail (Senda d’aua minerala)
connecting the different springs explains the importance of
the springs as well as providing background information. A
flyer giving additional information is available at the Scuol
guest information.
Every year in early summer a group of artists from near and
far attend a sculpting symposium in Sur En. Over the course
of a week each artist sculpts a work that is then placed in the
forest along the sculpture trail. The hour-long trail starts at
the camping ground and also includes work by local artists.
Over the course of two hours participants get to know some
of the unique characteristics of the Engadine. You can choose
at which point along the route you start. The orienteering
trail has 17 markers and is open all year round; it is ideal for
running competitions for families and groups.
An orientation schedule and further information are available
at the Tourist Information Office in Scuol.
Over the course of the last century this trail has been used
as a trading route connecting the villages along the valley
and is nowadays of historical importance. The culture trail
traverses the entire Lower Engadine through historically
important sites and connects communities with varied
traditions and histories.
This spectacular trail from Sent into the Sinestra valley follows
the ‘Brancla’ to Zuort crossing three hanging bridges on the
way. In the alpine guesthouse of Zuort you can enjoy a
well-earned rest or pick-me up. Afterwards you can either
follow a trail to Vnà and Ramosch or via Val Sinestra to the
village of Sent.

From S-charl (1810m) where silver miners used to live, a trail
climbs easily towards the Alp Astras past the highest forest of
Swiss pines in Europe. From the restaurant at Alp Astras the
trail climbs to the Costainas Pass (2251 m) before descending
to Alp Champatsch and, after passing through another forest,
Lü (1920 m). Duration: 4 – 5 hours.
This trail starts in Sur En (1121 m) and for three and a half
hours follows an old smugglers path.
The trail passes through forests and alpine meadows on its
way to Alp Uina Dadoura (1499 m) and Alp Daidant (1783 m).
Steeped in legend, the trail cuts its way through cliffs in stone
galleries known as ‘Il Quar’.
Starting in the village of Guarda (1653 m), this trail follows
Clozza creek for some two and a half hours through the Tuoi
Valley to SAC hut ‘Tuoi’. The trail passes through meadows and
forests on its way to Alp Suot (2018 m), from where it leads of
in the direction of Jamjoch and Vermunt Pass to the serviced
alpine hut of Chamanna Tuoi (2250 m) with its views of the Piz
Buin (3312 m).
This trail starts in the terraced village of Ftan (1633 m) and
leads to the top lift station of the chairlift beside the restaurant
«Prümaran Prui» (2064 m) from where it goes in the direction
of Clünas before taking a left towards Alp Laret (2202 m). It
takes about two hours to reach this serviced alp from Ftan and
provides impressive views of the Lower Engadine Mountains.
Starting in Tschlin (1533 m) this two hour trail leads off east
and provides spectacular views of the Lower Engadine
Dolomites on the other side of the valley. From the village the
trail leads through the Gronda Valley and d’Urezzas Forest to
Alp Tea at 2041 meters above sea level.
You can reach the start of this trail by ski-lift from Scuol to
Motta Naluns (2142 m). From here the trail climbs to La
Chamanna (2370 m) before descending through the Ruschana
Valley to Jonvrai (2179 m). From here the trail climbs again
before descending to the Vastur mountain restaurant and on
to Sent (1430 m). Duration 2– 3 hours.

The Tarasp Castle
A landmark overlooking the Lower Engadine since its
construction in 1040. Up until the beginning of the 19th
century Tarasp was part of Austria, at the turn of the 20th
century the castle, in desolate condition, was purchased
by K. A. Lingner the inventor of Odol mouth-wash for a sum
of 20 000 Swiss Francs and renovated from the foundations
up. The fascinating view from the high tower over the Lower
Engadine is especially recommended.
In summer and winter visitors are regularly entertained by
concerts on the castle’s wooden organ with its 3000 flutes.
In addition, there are guided tours through the castle. Daily
during summer season.

The Alpine Mill of Ftan
The farming economy of the Lower Engadine was, for several
hundred years, based on growing grains.
Terraced fields are even today part of the cultural landscape of

two grinding wheels is still in original condition and one of the
last witness’s to a bygone era. The Swiss Heritage Society

and is renowned for its quality and exclusiveness. The
musical, philosophical, and literary cabarets’ and performances are uncommon and often provoke as well as entertain.
The ‘Grotta da cultura’ in Sent is an open venue for cultural

‘Grotta’ is also a place to wile away the hours reading and
taking part in discussions.
Opening Times Tuesday–Saturday, 17.00 –19.30
The local artist Not Vital is famous for his works using images,
plastics and assemblies. Not lives between Lucca, New York
and Sent where he has set a studio in his family house. Well
worth a visit, Not Vitals Park at the western end of the village
contains a range of works from the artist.
Gian Enzo Sperone, a famed collector from Turin, has
displayed some of Not Vitals works in his gallery in New
York. As a result of this friendship, Sperone discovered the
‘Chasa dal guvernatur’ in Sent, which he purchased and
which has been renovated by Not’s brother Duri. The house
has since become a gallery available for art exhibitions.

Since the opening of the new 8-seater gondola from Scuol to
Motta Naluns the second lift accessing the ski area has also
been modernized. A 4-seater chairlift with an acrylic canopy
and 1200 persons per hour capacity will replace the old
2-seater lift from Ftan to Natèas/Prui in December 2010. The
old lift will be rebuilt in Kyrgyzstan.
Since its construction in 2009 the new 8-seater gondola lift has
comfortably transported both winter and summer guests from
Scuol to Motta Naluns. Thanks to new access to the lift from
both the bus and train stations getting to and from the lift
hindrances of the access are part of the past.
Over the last few years increased investments in making lifts
safer and more children-friendly have taken place. There is a
new 115-meter long covered magic carpet lift at the ‘Kinderland’ on the Motta Naluns as well as the a 60 and 70 meter
carpet lift and all of the chairlifts are fitted with extra children’s
security systems.
Motta Naluns is not the only family friendly ski area where
you can learn to ski or snowboard. There are also small areas
and easy slopes in Sent and Ftan with carpet lifts, and pony
lifts in Ardez, Guarda, and Tarasp.
You can combine your fun on the slopes with a visit to the
mineral spa in Scuol. A combined pass includes the following:
Use of the cablecar Motta Naluns, the bathing and sauna
areas in the Engadine spa Scuol, the Quadras indoor
swimming pool and the Trü sports centre during the validity
of the pass.
As well as the 1-Franc package (see page 45), there are also
other packages that combine public transport with multi-day
ski passes. Thanks to the ski and sport buses you can get to
and from the ski-area quickly and efficiently.

Cross-country Skiing
Because this is where world-champions are made.
Scuol – Martina: over 20 km along the frozen Inn
There are over 77 kilometers of prepared
trails for both classic and skating styles
between Susch and Martina.
Besides the newly opened ‘Loipa Dario
Cologna’ training trail dedicated to the
World Cup and Olympic champion,
the 28 km loop trail between Scuol and
Martina is a highlight for any crosscountry skier. For 35 years this trail has
been used for the ‘Passlung Martina
– Scuol’ cross country race. From
Giarsun, Lavin and Susch you will find
trails linking to the Engadine Ski
Marathon Trail. In Ardez, Ftan, Tarasp
and on Motta Naluns you will find
prepared trails with a range of
challenges.
You will find a free trail map with
detailed information at any of the
Tourist Information Offices.

Over 30 winter trails (160 km) and 12 sled runs (30 km),
in almost every village an ice rink, a variety of ‘ice stock’ fields
and an air-board run for the adventurous. You will find
important information about activities away from the ski
slopes on the Scuol winter map. You can pick up a card
complementary at any Tourist Information Office or on the
net at www.scuol.ch/broschueren
Additionally, you can check out the local’s information
magazine ALLEGRA that, apart from containing many
interesting articles, also lists local events, important opening
times and telephone numbers.

Planning Ski-Tours
Although Martina is only 1100 meters above sea level, the
summits of the surrounding Lower Engadine Dolomites and
the Silvretta Range in the National Park region reach well
over 3000 meters. With reliable snow, a long winter, a good
public transport network and a range of mountain restaurants and huts, you will find the ideal conditions for short,
spontaneous or longer more challenging ski tours.
You will find touring maps, information about local guides,
SAC alpine huts, avalanche and snow conditions at any of the
local Tourist Information Offices.

Sledding
In the Lower Engadine every village has a sled run. That
makes all together 12 runs that are in total 35 km long. The
3.5 km long run from Prui to Ftan is especially recommended.
This run starts at the top station of the Ftan – Prui lift and is
only a few meters from the Prui restaurant, it is a great place
to spend a day sledding. You can reach the run directly from
Ftan or by foot (30 min) from Motta Naluns.

You can purchase (or rent) sports equipment in winter at any
one of 10 shops in the Lower Engadine.

well as two ski and snowboard shops at the Motta Naluns
base station. A list of rental shops is available at
www.scuol.ch/winter
If you do not want to carry your ski and snowboard equipment
home at night you can rent lockers at the Motta Naluns base
station on a daily, weekly or yearly basis. You will find more
detailed information at the Motta Naluns ticket office.
As well as sales and rentals Sport Florinett (www.florinett.ch)

skating styles. The Swiss Snow Sport School also offers courses
(www.snowsportscuol.ch).
You will find detailed information about cross-country ski
courses and equipment at the Engadine Scuol Tourist
Information Office.
If you are in the Engadine to find some powder snow, you will
likely need one of the seven mountain professional guides
here in the area. If you prefer snowshoeing you will find
trained guides in Guarda, Ftan, Sent and Scuol.
An airboard is an inflatable board that you lie on, much like a
boogie board. It can be used on the Prui – Ftan sled run or
there is a 3 km run specially made for airboarding from Prui
to Ftan. You can rent the equipment at the Prui top station.
Apart from the sled run in Ftan you will find runs in every other
village in the region. The length of the runs range from 2 to 5
km and can be reached by foot within 30 to 60 minutes. The
start and finish of the Tschlin – Strada run is serviced by public
bus and at Vastur above Sent a sled is supplied free of charge
after every meal.

The Ice Palace in Tarasp
This is a winter fairy-tale that comes true every year. Many
hours of work are required in order to create a palace out of
ice and snow from the Lake of Tarasp. The ice palace at the
foot of the castle hill delivers cool drinks at the ice bar and
warm fondues in a unique atmosphere. You can watch
movies or take part in one of the many cultural events that
take place here, but be fast, the art of the palace is only
temporary and soon the spring sun will reclaim its frozen
waters for the lake.

Mobility in the National Park region
Car free mobility thanks to a great public transport network.
Bus and train ideally
complement each other
The car can remain at home.
The close cooperation between tourism
operators and regional public transport
(Post Bus and Rhaetian Railways) has,
over recent years, been very effective.
After the success of the bath train the
‘Aqualino’ and the ‘Baths-Combi’, other
packages such as the ‘Vereina’, which
offers complementary transportation to
the region from anywhere in Switzerland,
have been introduced.
The cooperation between tourism
partners and the public transport has
seen the introduction of the ‘Wellness
Package’ (page 13) and ‘Engadin Scuol
Mobil’ (page 57), which are both based
on the use of public transport. All these
packages are part of a national project
whose goal is to allow ‘holidays without
the car’. Since 2008 Engadine Scuol has
been functioning as a pilot destination.
