Starting out in 1958 with only 4 official languages: Dutch, French, German and Italian, reflecting the languages of the founding Member States — Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the number has gradually grown over the years as more countries have joined the European Union. English became an official language in 1973 when the UK and Ireland joined. There are fewer official languages (24) than Member States (28), however, as some countries share common languages. German, for example, is the language of Germany and Austria.
