The History of
Greater Nevada Credit Union
Providing Greater Service for 66 Years
1949 – 1950s
• Nevada State Employees Federal Credit Union
is charted on January 24, 1949. By the end of
the first year the credit union has 82 members.
• Over the next decade membership grows
rapidly as state employees and their families
enjoy the benefits of a truly cooperative banking
experience.
1960s
• Increasing popularity of the credit union
results in constructing its first branch
building on Second Street in Carson City.
• A full-time staff is hired to serve the evergrowing membership.
• Membership continues to expand as more
employee groups gain access to the
credit union.

1970s
• Member demand for new services brings
about “share draft” checking accounts and
direct deposit.
• A new headquarters is built next door to
the previous branch to accommodate
ongoing growth.

We become Nevada Community Federal Credit
Union and serve employees of several hundred
different companies. Branches in Minden and Ely
are established due to mergers in those
communities.
Home mortgages, credit cards and money market
accounts are rolled out.
Our Phone Activated Teller (P.A.T.) becomes one of
Nevada’s first automated banking systems.

1990s
• A shift to state charter brings another
name change — to Greater Nevada
Credit Union, which opens to all northern
Nevada residents.
• The headquarters is relocated to Eagle
Station Lane in Carson City.

• More mergers means new branches in Reno,
Sparks, and West Wendover.
• A new educational branch is launched at
Carson High School and operated entirely by
students.
• Members gain account access via gncu.org and
eBranch 24/7 online banking, and a nationwide
network of fee-free ATMS and shared branches.
1991 – Addition of Fourth Branch
Reno Federal Credit Union Merges with GNCU in 1991
2000s
• Strong demand for home loans leads to
Greater Nevada Mortgage, our first
subsidiary company.
• Branches open in Spanish Springs,
Dayton and north Carson City.
• Business checking and lending services
are introduced.

• A 24/7 call center provides even more
convenience.
• Community service becomes our hallmark
through successful partnerships with
organizations such as Special Olympics,
Habitat for Humanity and American Cancer
Society, as well as our financial literacy
education programs delivered in schools and to
community groups.
2010 - Present
• Mobile banking is introduced, along with mobile
check deposits.
• GNCU partners with the University of Nevada,
Reno to raise funds each year for the Wolf Pack
Marching Band.

• Business Services expands and new business
checking products and loans are introduced.
• A progressive new branch is opened in
northwest Reno.
• GNCU’s field of membership expands to include
all counties in Nevada.
• New branches are opened in Elko inside the
Walmart Supercenter and in Golden Valley,
Reno.
