PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Greetings, and welcome to the final newsletter for 2015. It is a huge undertaking to run a camp such as Branches and we thank everyone for their support, including all the WHS staff, volunteers who assist, the community support – from the Branches Trust and the Police, to NZSki and others who lend us vehicles, through to the Branches Station owners and managers. Jo Boyd will upload the Branches Camp photos soon to her website and these will be available to purchase. Please click here to view. Junior Prizegiving - this was a great occasion, and a special time to acknowledge and celebrate students’ efforts and achievements throughout the year. We have included the full list of prizewinners, but I will particularly note here three very prestigious awards: Jane Davenport Memorial Award (Branches) – Ethan Cruise Year 9 Robertson Family Trophy (All-round) – Seth Mawhinney Year 10 Robertson Family Trophy (All-round) Cameron Ryall running, and families have begun accessing this support already - please do contact us if you have any questions or are interested in support. Staff - my thanks to all of our teaching and support staff for their efforts throughout the year. My special thanks to those staff who are departing WHS at the end of this year, they have made a great contribution to WHS, and we wish them all the very best. 2016 Start and Dates - please see our website for information on the start dates for 2016. Please note that our office reopens at midday on Monday 25th January. Again this week we include the final Senior Prizegiving speeches - this week is our Dux, Zoe Windner. Weather-wise the weekend looks better than it did a few days ago, and shouldn't be too bad. In terms of the summer ahead El Nino will be the big determiner - fingers crossed it goes our way! Thank you very much to everyone who has engaged with and supported us this year. I would also like to take this chance to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year :). Steve Hall Principal BYOD - a final reminder about BYOD next year, which includes that students are expected to come to school with a device from day one next year. tops, blazing sun...all part and parcel of this year's camp!!! Despite this, the camp was once again an important life long experience for Year 10 students. Valuable lessons were learnt about respecting nature, relating to other students and working together to complete fun but often challenging activities. Thank you to all those that have help support the camp: NZSKI Remarkables, AJ Hackett, Beaver Construction, Queenstown Police and the wonderful hard working people of the Branches Camp Trust. Photos of the camp are available from Jo Boyd at www.riverleaphotography.com/#/page/home/ Regards Ken McIntyre 9 WAKATIPU HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 11 DECEMBER Important dates for your diary… WHO All All New students, Yr 13 New students All All Yr 9 & Yr 13 All All All 2015 2016 STUDENT COUNCIL EVENT DATE School Office opens at midday Mon 25 Jan Uniform shop opens – 9am-4pm daily Mon 25 – Fri 29 Jan New Enrolments Yr 13 Course Counselling begins 9 am Mon 25 Jan New Enrolments Tues 26 Jan Teacher Only Day Thurs 28 Jan Teacher Only Day Fri 29 Jan First Day of School - Yr 9 & Yr 13 only Briefing at 8:30 am Mon 1 Feb All students at school Tues 2 Feb This year we have an electronic application process with the requirement that the applicants complete a google form which will be sent out to all students returning to Wakatipu High School in 2016, via their school email accounts. The various Councils allow students to have their input and voice heard in regards to the many aspects of school life at Wakatipu High School. Council members act as all-round representatives for the student body and may be required to assist in organising various school and wider community competitions, activities and initiatives. The position of a council member can be of a demanding, yet extremely rewarding one, as students are able to help initiate and support the changes they want to see in our school and community. A position on the Student Council can be attained by applicants in any year of the school, as we have a Junior council for years 9 and 10 as well as the Student and Sub - Councils. 2015 WHS MAGAZINE We still have a number of 2015 WHS Magazines at reception ready for collection by those students who have paid. 2016 Stationery Requirements are now available for ordering online via the stationery link on our website. Hannah Witheford has proposed a “Change Maker” project for 2016 as part of her Talent Development Program at WHS. The project is aimed at providing an inschool experience of robotics for local children in Years 4 and 5. The robotics kits Hannah will use to teach the students will be donated to the schools so that the students who participated in the project can use them to teach other students in the school. Why is this project important? This project is important because it assists Hannah’s talent development goals, provides an opportunity for WHS to build connections with the local primary school community, and gives younger students a chance to develop their own learning and leadership capabilities. Cost Robotics kits are an expensive item. Hannah is putting her savings towards purchasing them but also needs some financial assistance to make her goal a reality. Remarkables Primary School is supporting this initiative through the sale of Crunch, Munch, Srumdiddlyunch, a cookbook put together by their students and top chefs in Queenstown. Hannah will be selling these books at WHS. Remarkables Primary School has offered to donate 20% of the sales made by Hannah, to assist her to fund her project. The book is filled with delicious recipes and quintessential photos of this area. It would make a great present for family and friends. Please contact Hannah by email if you have questions 15hwitheford@wakatipu.school.nz MEDIA STUDIES 2016 Are you involved in film or television production? We are starting a new course next year at Level 2 with a focus on film-making. Since Queenstown is a hub for film and TV professionals, there must be lots of you out there with some great skills to share with our students. Whether you work behind a camera, on the set or in post-production, I'd love to make contact with you. I'm looking to showcase the kinds of careers available in film so a quick visit to talk to students about your job or even a brief workshop would provide a breadth of learning experiences for them. If you're keen to help out in some way, get in touch with me via email: jsmart@wakatipu.school.nz Jennifer Smart, Media Studies teacher 13 WAKATIPU HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 11 DECEMBER 2015 DUKE OF EDINBURGH This has been another great year for the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Wakatipu High School. That these new people wouldn’t warm to me, old friends would forget about me, there was snow on the Remarkables, and it was February? Nine months later, I’ve only eaten lunch with my little sister twice. I’ve made some of my best friends in the entire world, and I actually quite like the snow. This wouldn’t have happened without you. We are so lucky to have teachers and senior leaders here who genuinely care about us doing our best. I’ve never been to a school where students and staff have been valued so equally, and we have the opportunity to learn from them. They have their own goals and ambitions, and they still choose to help us achieve ours. They still choose to show up to a handful of geo kids before sunrise, hang around late even when they’re tired and have their own families to get home to, painfully explain to us, just one more time, basic principles we should have picked up long ago. My family – you forced me to pack my entire life into two, twenty-three kilo suitcases, but I’m glad you did. You’ve unconditionally supported my decisions, and I am very lucky to have you. The same goes for everyone here. You’ve welcomed this new kid - from the North Island, no less - into your ranks. And it’s crazy, and beautiful, to be surrounded by so many quietly driven people. There are so many intelligent, inspiring people in this community, and that’s intimidating. Putting yourself out there is wild, and scary. But next year, we’re all moving into unfamiliar territory. Change is scary, but it’s inevitable. There are so many things beyond our control, but regardless of what those circumstances are, working for something we are genuinely committed to is going to be appreciated. In fact sometimes, the only thing you can be sure of, going forward, are your goals and your will to achieve them. And having that to hold onto can be incredibly valuable when you aren’t sure of much else. Those aren’t my own words of wisdom - but something my first principal shared with us. Often we don’t realise what an impact these people have, but we were young, keen, and about to go to an athletics competition, and while those of you who know me well know that I no longer run - unless it’s to the kitchen - the point remains. He didn’t want us to come out of all that work without knowing we’d given it our all. Placings didn’t matter – what did, was that we stuck true to ourselves and made the most of the opportunity – for us. It’s the same here, with our last senior leaders. They might be strict, tell us that no, we’re not allowed to hold fake weddings at assemblies, but they want the best for us, and they’re setting us up for life. Maybe school’s not your thing – that’s ok! You can still set a goal and work toward it. Maybe you tried your best and still didn’t get acknowledged today – that sucks, but this is for you. If you’ve found something you love, then run with it. Your personal satisfaction means so much more than a piece of paper. In saying that, it is an absolute honour to have been able to speak to you today. My parting words - do your best in externals – but do it for you. Take pride but be humble in your successes. Run hard and fast, but if you trip then start next year with a positive attitude, and you’ll be unstoppable. Good luck. Thank you. 15 WAKATIPU HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 11 DECEMBER 2015 DISCOVERY FOR TEENS PROGRAMME Scholarship applications are open for our April Discovery for Teens Programme! Scholarship applications for our April programme close on 29th January 2016 and will be reviewed in the first week of February. “The message is out, team discovery does make a shift in attitude for teenagers and parents.” – Peter (parent) Please feel free to contact us if you would like any additional information. www.discoveryforteens.org.nz or email admin@discoveryforteens.org.nz Karla Dawson, Principal’s PA, has volunteered as a Team Leader on this AMAZING programme twice and cannot speak highly enough of it and how much the teens get out of this. The boys will play in the NSW Cricket Carnival held west of Sydney with games in the Blue Mountains, Bathurst, Orange and Mudgee. All together there will be seven competitive games with one of the highlights sure to be the chance to play under lights in Mudgee. The team will represent the school as the first ever overseas team to be invited to this event in its 20 year history. To add a cultural component to the trip they will also perform the school haka in front of a large crowd in the opening ceremony. We wish them all the best for their games and hope they enjoy the chance to explore Sydney and its surrounds and take in a top level game of T20 Cricket at the SCG. Thank you to all who have supported the team in the build up to this tour and especially Russell Mawhinney and the organising committee who have made it happen. Team: Reece Collin, Olly Price, Cameron Ryall, Dylan Tall, Daniel Lewis, Xavier Sadler, Baxter Thomas, Seth Mawhinney, Troy Anstiss, Gabe White, Angus Herron, Jaxon Collins, Lachie Clark, Quinn McDonald. 16 WAKATIPU HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER • 11 DECEMBER 2015 COMMUNITY NOTICES Dan Gerard is a professional driving instructor and a member of the NZ Institute of Driver Educators.
