SAFETY SERVICES
For our security and safety representatives from Durham Constabulary and St. John’s Ambulance
will be in attendance throughout the day.
ATTRACTIONS
WILDLIFE DISPLAY
A fully mobile team offering interactive educational displays and short talks throughout the day on a variety
of animals, combined with the opportunity of hands-on experience. All their animals are domestically bred
and completely at ease in a show environment. Expect to see snakes, spiders, lizards, scorpions, hissing
cockroaches and giant snails, rabbits, guinea pigs, meerkats, ducks and chickens … all displayed in their own
attractive areas.
FACE PAINTING – JANET ALLEN
Janet will be using a large variety of top quality paints and sparkling gels and particularly loves to face and
arm paint pretty sparkly designs. She can also create scars, wounds and scary designs if your boys or girls
really want them! Janet believes in making children of ALL ages smile, if there is a design you want or a
theme to follow, she will do her very best to create it for you!
KERRY-ANN SCHOOL of DANCE
A delightful group demonstrating traditional tap-dancing skills.
Sessions in the morning and afternoon.
ARCHERY FOR BEGINNERS
Two instructors will guide your first steps as an archer.
Informal sessions between 11a.m. and 3p.m. – no booking; no fees – just join in the fun!
We are delighted to re-establish this time-honoured skill to the show activities.
Kindly provided by the Weardale Adventure Centre.
LASER CLAY SHOOTING
Using the laser sport system, 5 people at a time can shoot at targets launched from automatic traps. Scores
are displayed on an electronic scoreboard and varied programmes can be used dependent upon the
participant’s skill.
CLIMBING WALL
Reach for the sky on the Climbing Wall, providing five routes with different degrees of challenge. Fitted with
hydraulic auto-belays, allowing climbing and abseiling in total safety for all ages. By far our most popular
event in 2015.
FREE FALL
Take a leap of faith onto the stunt air bed or take the fast slide back down to the bottom. High impact,
good throughout and something for all ages.
THE SECRETARIES’ TENT
A focal point for the show and the place to register for competitions whose entries are only taken on the
day e.g. Cross Country Runs for men, ladies and a short course for children.
Makes a good rendezvous point too!

Darren Bonas, aka 'Mister Twister', is recognised as one of the leading children's entertainers in the UK.
Darren presents a special comedy magic show for children of all ages full of fun, laughter and excitement.

STANHOPE SILVER BAND
Stanhope Silver Band is one of the oldest bands in the country and can trace its roots back to 1823, when
the ‘Band of Hope’ performed in Stanhope Methodist Chapel.

Richard Salkeld, a fully qualified chef, will be demonstrating his consummate skills in the kitchen by
cooking fresh local produce.

One can also enjoy a drink from The Coffee Station and when the sun reaches its zenith visit Bolton’s Ice
Cream Van or the Bar (opening at 11.00 a.m.).

marks the 50th anniversary of Stanhope Photographic Society who are preparing a display for
each of the Weardale shows.

Younger exhibitors are considered in two age groups, the overall winners in each group receiving
trophies and a printed rosette: The Low Whitestones Cup (up to 10 years); The George Ledger
Cup (11 to 16 years).
The Best Junior Photograph, drawn from both age groups, is awarded: The Backhouse Cup; £10
and a printed rosette following a kind donation by Mr. and Mrs. J. Backhouse.
Class Prizes: 1st (£4) and rosette, 2nd (£3), 3rd (£2), with all three places receiving prize cards. As
with trophies, exhibitors are split into two groups for these awards.

WEARDALE VISITOR NETWORK AWARD
A relatively new award started in 2015, sponsored by the Weardale Visitor Network. Entry
consists of a print in adult class 12 Weardale (multiple entries are welcome.) with the standard
adult class prizes enhanced to: 1st (£15), 2nd (£10), 3rd (£5) plus the usual winner’s rosette and
prize cards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The winner also receives the John Taylor Memorial Trophy to
hold for a year.
Exhibitors grant permission for material submitted to be used by the Weardale Visitor Network in
that organisation’s marketing promotions, some of which will be on display in the Photography
marquee.
ADVANCED MOUNTS
The winner of class 1a Wildlife receives The Weardale Environmental Trust Trophy, to be held
for one year.
The President’s Favourite Photograph: receives the The Miss Dawson Cup and a printed
rosette.

New feature: If Produce and Handicraft entrants would like to sell some of their entries on show
day then please add price tickets to those items for sale. Buyers should bring a price ticket to an
organiser, who will take payment and put a ‘sold’ sign next to the item purchased. Purchases can
be collected after 4.30pm as the show closes.
We are doing this to raise funds for the section and so will take 10% commission for every item
sold. If this seems a good idea and you would like to do it, please inform the section leader or a
steward on the day, or on the entry form (if possible).
If you would like any more information on this new feature then please do not hesitate to contact

NORTHPENS CREATIVE WRITING AWARD
A relatively new venture organised by the NorthPens Writers’ Group and sponsored by The
Weardale Museum.
Write a story or poem inspired by something you see in the The Weardale Museum, or an account
of your visit to the museum.
Your piece must be no longer than 500 words (poems no longer than 15 lines), written on A4 paper,
single sided please. Don’t forget to include your name, age and contact information (not counted
in word limit!) The competition is open to anyone up to the age of 11 and prizes will be awarded in
two categories, under 7 and 8 - 11 years. Entries must be received by Friday 5th August 2016.

Exhibitor’s cards – Please enclose a S.A.E. with entry form by Monday 22nd August if you require
exhibitor cards sent to you prior to show day.
All other exhibitors’ cards can be collected from Secretary’s Table on day of show.
Please Note: – NO late entries will be accepted after 9.30 am on show day.

Exhibit and Displays –can be placed from 8.00 am but exhibitors are asked to leave the tent by 9.45am.
NO exhibit should be removed before 4.00 pm without speaking to Section Secretary.
Any Exhibit not collected by close of show will be held by Section Secretary for 24 hours and then may be
disposed of.

Rules and Conditions
1. Strictly no entries on the day except for show jumping and games.
2. An entry may be refused if the judge believes the animal to be lame, or in a poor
physical state.
3. Whips and spurs must not be used in the pony games.
4. Excessive use of the whip or spurs, mistreating a horse, or riding in a dangerous
manner will be severely penalised.
5. Riders must wear the correct apparel on horseback. Riding hats must conform to
current safety standards and the use of a body protector is strongly recommended.
6. Riders competing in lead-rein classes are not eligible for non-lead-rein classes.
7. Animals under the age of 4 years must not be ridden on the show field.
8. The showing classes are divided into groups, the Champion & Reserve from each
group are eligible to compete for the Best In Show award at the end of the day.
9. Times printed in the schedule are approximate and dependent on the number of
entries, unknown at the time of going to print.
