Bounceback after setback

After letting the anger fester inside them the
whole afternoon Brad Jacobs’ rink took out
its frustration on Norway Tuesday night and
managed to regain their hold on first place at
the 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship, presented by Booster Juice.
Jacobs’ team from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.,
saw their unbeaten string snapped with an
ugly 6-4 loss to Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic during the morning draw. Team Canada got
back on track with a 10-7 win over Norway’s
Thomas Ulsrud in the evening draw.
The loss to the Czech Republic left a bitter
taste in Jacobs’ mouth.
“We were pretty angry about it for quite a
few hours after that game, for not playing as
well as we could,” said Jacobs.
The game against Norway didn’t score many
points for artist merit but did put Canada back
on top of the standings with a 6-1 record.
“It was a little bit of a goofy game,” said
Jacobs. “There was lots of rocks in play, a couple of misses here and there.
“At the end of the day I think we had a few
less misses than they did and came out with
the win.”
The back-and-forth game was decided in
the ninth end. Ulsrud was light with his last
shot and unable to get behind two Canadian
stones. That allowed Jacobs an easy draw for
three.
“It was an up-and-down game,” said Ulsrud,
the 2010 Olympic silver medallist. “There was
some good shots and some really bad ones.
“I think we made too many mistakes to
beat Canada. We had our chances, they had
their chances. They took their chances and we
didn’t take ours.”
A pair of upsets by the United States, one a
jaw-dropping defeat of Scotland, helped Canada remain on top of the table.
U.S. skip Brady Clark took advantage of a
last-rock miss by Scotland’s David Murdoch to
steal two points in the 10th end for a 8-6 win.
That followed Clark’s 10-8 win over China dur-
ing the afternoon.
“I’m happy to get a couple of wins today,”
said Clark. “We needed to do that, get a little
confidence.
“We’ve joked around we can be Team Roller-coaster at times. We can play poorly and
bounce back and play great.”
The loss dropped Murdoch into a three-way
tie with Sweden and Denmark at 5-2.
“That’s a bad loss,” said the two-time world
champion. “I hope that doesn’t affect us the
1-2 (playoff ) game.
“We were hoping for a two-win day today to
keep us at the top of the pile. We will have to
come out firing tomorrow.”
Scotland beat Russia 6-4 during the afternoon draw while China lost 5-4 to Norway in
the morning.
China and Norway are both tied with 4-3
records. The Czech Republic, Switzerland, and
the U.S. are 3-4. Japan is 2-5 while Finland and
Russia are 1-6.
The loss to the Czech was Canada’s first of
the tournament and Jacobs’ rink of Ryan Fry,
E. J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden looked ugly
doing it. Both Fry and Jacobs missed easy
shots. At times Jacobs looked bewildered, like
a student trying to write an exam he hadn’t
studied for.
On the other hand, Snitil shot 90 per cent
and appeared to have all the answers.
“It was their day. It wasn’t ours,” said Jacobs,
who lost for the first time in 11 games dating
back to the Tim Hortons Brier. “It’s very frustrating and a horrible performance.
“There’s always going to be adversity. You
can’t come out every game and play perfectly.
We have been on fire a lot lately. It’s only going
to last so long before you end up taking a loss.
It’s frustrating to come out and not play very
well.”
Japan’s Yusuke Morozumi also did Canada
a favour by scoring two points in an extra end
for a 10-8 win over Sweden’s Niklas Edin.
“That was a big one today,” said Morozumi.
“I was nervous on the last shot, but I’m always
nervous because everyone is so good.”

After a slow start Denmark’s
Rasmus Stjerne has used a fivegame win streak to stay in the playoff hunt. Stjerne beat the Czechs
6-5 during the afternoon and
downed Japan 7-4 in the evening.
“We came out rough at the start
and didn’t play our own game,”
said Stjerne. “We tried too much.
“We had to flip the switch after
the second game and it’s working
really well now.”
The morning upset was the
Czech Republic’s first win over
Canada at a men’s world championship in five meetings.
“It’s super beating one of the
best teams in the world,” said
Snitil, who skipped the Czechs
to the country’s first medal at
the European championships, a
bronze.
“We had a good day. The first
half we had a couple of lucky
breaks and made a couple of saving shots, otherwise we would
probably give up a big number and
it would have been a totally different story.”
A miserable game turned awful
for Canada in the ninth end. Jacobs
missed a raise takeout with his
final stone, giving the Czechs their
second steal of the game and a 6-4
lead coming home.
The Czechs used a deuce in the
fifth end to tie the match 5-5. In the
sixth, the usually accurate Jacobs
missed a takeout with his first shot,
leaving a Snitil stone buried in the
house.
Jacobs attempted angle raise
with his second shot but instead
hit his own stone on the nose,
allowing the Czechs to steal a point
and a 4-3 lead.
Canada tied the game again
in the seventh but Snitil made a
pretty draw to retain the lead in the
eighth.
“We just didn’t get the rocks in
the right place and kind of allowed
them to escape,” said E. J. Harnden. “They played really well.
“It was one of those games
where they made everything and
we were just on the wrong side of
the inch and missed the key shots.”
In the other evening game Switzerland beat Finland 7-5.
Brady’s USA Bunch had
a big day with wins over
China and Scotland.

One thing that separates the Ford World Men’s Curling
Championship, and all curling championships, from other
sports is the access fans have to the athletes.
Unlike most sports, where fans are kept at a distance,
curling not only allows these interactions, it encourages
them. That’s what makes championship curling such a
FANtastic experience.
Each day, between the morning and afternoon draws,
teams have been featured at autograph sessions in the
Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, allowing every fan a
chance to meet the curlers, chat with them, and have their
souvenirs signed.
Graham Bwint, experiencing his first world
championship, took in the autograph session with Team
Japan and Team Denmark.
“I had taken karate as a kid and learned to count to 10
in Japanese,” said Bwint. “When I was getting autographs
from the team, I asked them, in Japanese, about the two
they gave up in the eighth end of their game… they got a
pretty good laugh out of it.”
“It’s really neat to be able to meet and talk to the teams
you were watching compete not fifteen minutes earlier,”
added the Calgarian.

Al Hackner and Rick Lang have been enjoying their time at
the Ford World Men’s, meeting with fans in the Patch.

On Monday, legendary curlers Al Hackner and Rick
Lang entertained fans with stories about their careers, their
experiences, and of course, “The Shot” - the double takeout
Hackner made against Pat Ryan in the 1985 Brier.
Kelly from Calgary, on a girl’s getaway for the week, was
excited to see the duo on stage and hear their stories. They
actually met the two the night before in the Patch.
“I saw Rick Lang getting a beer, so I followed him back
to his table and asked to have my photo taken with him,”
said Kelly, “then I saw the Iceman (Al Hackner), and was able
to get my photo with both of them. My dad is going to freak
when he sees it.”
“We’re here for the curling, but this is a big part of the
fun!” added her friend Kathy, pointing at the floor of the
Patch with both hands.

Don Pennell is the third shooter to move on to the championship stage of the Cool Shots competition, Saturday

Lund hopes to bring Edin ‘mental edge’
There’s been times this week when Eva Lund wanted to come
down from the coaches’ bench and throw a stone during the
2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship, presented by
Booster Juice.
Considering Lund’s history as a third on Anette Norberg’s
two-time Olympic champion rink, she might be a better curler
than some of the men playing.
“I miss the game and the ice looks great,” Lund said with a
laugh Tuesday. “Of course I would like to jump in.”
Lund won’t be making any shots this week. What the 41-yearold from Stockholm will be doing is helping Swedish skip Niklas
Edin and his team get mentally prepared for each game.
Lund’s role is part sports psychologist, part calming influence.
She mends frayed nerves and stabilizes confidence.
“I don’t get involved that much in tactics,” said Lund, who is
married to Swedish curling coach Stefan Lund and is a part-time
project manager. “They handle that for themselves.
“For me, it’s to work on how we want to perform out there,
the attitude we want to have and how to use our energy the right
way.”
An 11-game round-robin can be a grind physically and mentally. By mid week the mind can be as tired as the muscles are
sore. Lund’s job is to make sure Edin’s team of third Sebastian
Kraupp, second Fredrik Lindberg and lead Viktor Kjaell stay
focused and sharp.
“You focus on the small things,
the little details, then big things
might happen,” she said. “You
can not create the big things to
happen.
“You need to focus on the
details.”
Sweden has struggled at times
during the tournament but heads
into Wednesday with a 5-2 record
and remains in the playoff mix.
“They really kept it together
even though they have struggled
with missing some easy shots,”
said Lund. “They still have the
right attitude toward each other.
“We are building upon that. We are going in the right direction.”
Lund, Oona Kauste of Finland and Hatomi Nagaoka of Japan
are among the women coaches at the world championship.
Lund believes more women should be involved in coaching.
“I think the men need to step out of their box and think more
broadly,” said Lund. “If you have a different perspective as a
women you bring more value.
“To have someone who thinks just like you would not bring
so much value.”
Peja Lindholm, the head coach of both the Swedish men’s and
women’s teams, said for him, gender isn’t an issue when selecting coaches.
“She (Lund) knows what it takes to be out there,” said Lindholm, a three-time world champion. “She has all the experience
from the Olympic gold.
“On her team she had a lot of stamina. She put all the energy
together to go in the right direction. That’s what I would say is
the reason she is with the team. She has a lot of respect.”
Lund brings some impressive credentials. Besides the two
Olympic golds her trophy case includes two women’s world
championship gold medals, a pair of silver and a bronze.
Edin said his team sorted through the names of about 35
potential coaches before deciding on Lund.
“Most of them were men because we don’t have that many girl
players in Sweden or coaches,” said the two-time world championship bronze medallist.
“We wanted the best one and that was Eva.”
Lund has worked with Edin’s team to shed some mental
weight.
“We try to think too much about everything,” said Edin. “It’s
great to get a person that is more relaxed and maybe can lighten
us a little bit.

“When it’s tense out there we need somebody
to calm us down.”
Lund began working with the team prior to
last year’s world championship. Edin has seen a
change in attitude.
“We are going in more positive,” he said.
“We’re trying not to think too much about the
mistakes, think forward.
“It we lose a game, just take the good stuff out
of it and move onto the next game.”
During the pre-game warmups Lund is on
the ice, helping the team judge the ice conditions and match stones. She watches the games
sitting beside Lindholm and is ready to offer
advice during breaks.
“There is never a right or wrong in curling,”
Lund said. “There always is choices.
“Making the right choice also is executing it
the right way. It’s not only the decision but it’s
execution.”
Lund preaches detail and routine. Being successful at curling is a bit like reading a good
book. You must take it a chapter at a time and
can’t skip to the final page.
“You focus on the small things, the little
details, then big things might happen,” she said.
“You can not create the big things to happen.
“You need to focus on the details.”
Despite some choppy seas it has been mostly
smooth sailing for Sweden so far this week.
Lund wants to make sure the team isn’t blown
off course by any unexpected storms.
“It’s important to keep things together,” she
said. “We are facing four tough games the last
two days.
“We need to be on top and mentally prepared.”

Montreal hosting 2014 Scotties

The Canadian Curling Association is hoping that by placing
the 2014 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Montreal it will be a
stepping stone to hold other major championships in cities like
Toronto and Vancouver.
“Everybody knows Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are the
big three cities in Canada,” Greg Stremlaw, Curling Canada’s CEO,
said last week after announcing next year’s Scotties will be held at
Montreal’s Maurice Richard Arena Feb. 1-9. “This is really a template to kind of build towards one of the three big cities, see if it
can be successful.
“I think Montreal, with all the elements that are there, we are
going to be really watching closely to see how the bottom line
looks. If it works well, maybe we can start to look at some stuff for
Toronto or Vancouver as well.”
The last time the Canadian women’s champion was held in
Montreal was 1979. It was the last year Macdonald Tobacco sponsored The Lassie. It was also the first time the championship used
a playoff format and the first time the final game was shown on
television.
Montreal also hosted the 1977 Brier.
Vancouver hosted the 1978 Brier and the 1997 Scotties.
The Scotties have never been held in Toronto and the last Brier
was 1941.

Besides the Brier and Scotties, the other championships hosted
by the CCA are the Canada Cup, the Continental Cup, the Canadian Juniors and the world curling championship. Next year’s
Continental Cup will be held in Las Vegas.
Stremlaw is excited about the marketing opportunities Montreal presents.
“Curling in Quebec is really a diamond in the rough,” he said.
The Maurice Richard Arena is a 4,750-seat multi-purpose arena.
It was built in 1962 and renovated in 1994.
The arena hosted boxing and wrestling at the 1976 Summer
Olympic Games. It is located on a metro stop making for easy
access.
Montreal is also home to Kruger Products, which is now in its
32nd year as title sponsor for the Scotties.
“Kruger has a deep-rooted history in Montreal which dates
back over a century,” Nancy Marcus, corporate vice-president of
marketing, said in a release. “Curling is a part of our company’s
heritage. We’re looking forward to Montreal hosting a milestone
event.”
One of the challenges of hosting a competition in a large city
that also has professional sports teams and many entertainment
options is making sure your event doesn’t get lost.
“We have to activate the brand and make sure people know all
about it and get bums in the seats,” said Stremlaw.
“If people come we’re golden. We need to activate the brand
and excite people, whether that’s through local sponsorship or
painting the town red. All the little elements that go into it.”
Cathy Hughes, executive vice-chair of the Montreal organizing
committee, said 17 curling clubs currently operate on the Island
of Montreal. She’s confident the Scotties will draw a large crowd.
“We are going to promote it everywhere we can, locally and outside the city,” she said.
“The curling clubs are very excited. We are going to make sure
everybody knows about it. We are going to tell our tale.”
