AIDAN’S ACTIVITY CENTER, LIVONIA 4 KEN SCHRAMM, Bishop Gallagher HS Alumni email: kenneth.e.schramm.civ@mail.mil A good friend of mine, Paula Boucher SGH62, passed along your address. I am contacting you for your assistance. My father worked for the City of Detroit’s Department of Street Railways (D.S.R.) for forty years. He was the department’s historian and co-authored several books on the history of the DSR. I was wondering if any St. Gregory Alumni might have any DSR memorabilia; photos of DSR streetcars and buses, any articles dealing with the DSR. Did any alumni or their families ever work at the DSR, or any local bus company? I myself am quite a Detroit historian and collect items such as these. I use them for historical displays at libraries and museums. I also present programs on the history of the DSR and Detroit. Ken Schramm (586) 751-2335 RAY HERRICK email: raymond.herrick@daimler.com I am the son of St. Gregory graduates Paul Herrick SGH56 and Carolyn Waring Herrick SGH58. Since my Dad died in 2012, I have been very interested in the athletic exploits of my family during their days at St. Gregory’s. I know my Dad played football, basketball and baseball, as did his brothers Charles, John SGH49, and Joe SGH63. (Uncle Joe Herrick is pictured here.) My Mom played basketball during her years at St. Gregory’s, as well as her brother Ron Waring SGH68. Dad often told me about his older brothers’ exploits, especially John who starred at running back. He often bragged about his little brother Joe, who went on to play football at the University of Detroit. Ron Waring was an AllCatholic League catcher on championship baseball teams in 1967 and 1968. He went on to play baseball at Wayne State. If anyone has any old newspaper articles, team rosters, or pictures, please contact me. I would certainly appreciate it! Thank you in advance. Ray Herrick (313) 592-3726 LEO ST. AMOUR, SGH57; Michigan Thank you again for the wonderful work you do to publish the St. Gregory School Alumni Newsletter. Your efforts are unparalleled and greatly appreciated. Immediately after reading the latest edition, I discovered a bonus benefit of the newsletter—it lowers my blood pressure! I suppose reading it reminds me of the St. Gregory Culture, which is comforting and tranquilizing. Keep up the good work. (Pictured is St. Gregory’s Senior Class—Home Room, #110) DIANE (FLESHER) DELACH, SGH67; Michigan St. Gregory the Great Parish has had a tremendous impact on so many lives in all these 90 years. My father was so proud of the buildings and grounds when he was maintenance man there in the late 1960’s. The church is still a beautiful building. 5 REUNION WEEKEND—2014 (Day 1) ST. GREGORY NIGHT FRIDAY, AUGUST 8TH Our traditional St. Gregory Night all-class reunion is a party you won’t want to miss! Eric, our DJ, will be playing soft music and open bar with beer, wine, and soft drinks. Complimentary snacks and desserts will be on the buffet tables. Who will be there? We never know from year to year, but it’s always a lively, hap py crowd– and maybe someone from your Class, looking for you! 6 PAMELA (GITRE) LUKASEK, SGH62; North Carolina The Gitre Family has a long history with St. Gregory School. My Dad, Leo Gitre, SGH33, attended school there while his parents lived on Wildemere, just three blocks from the school. After my parents were married, they continued to live in the same home and had my sister Lynne, my brother Stephen and me. We all attended school there for all twelve years. The Dorans were our cousins and lived across the street from the school. I met Leonard Lukasek while I was in the ninth grade, and we were married in 1962. I have so many happy memories of our IHM Sisters, my friends, the dances, the football and basketball games, and many more activities that were provided to us. I remember when we couldn’t have our Friday night sock hop for some reason, so all the kids with cars pulled them onto the playground, turned on the headlights, played records on Len’s car record player. Then we all got out and danced! Even the Sisters came out of the convent to clap along with the music…. until Mother Superior put a stop to it. It was fun for a while. But more importantly, we learned about God and His love. We learned about morality that to this day I still treasure and practice. We were not allowed to shirk our education because it would be the foundation of the rest of our lives. For that, I thank my parents and the Sisters who taught us. Easter Sunday at St. Gregory Church MIKE MORRISON, SGH67; Michigan Here is a picture of my newly cloned St. Gregory jacket. I had them add the white leather sleeves and the Cherokee head. LEO MORIN, SGH46; Michigan I have enclosed some photos from the past that may interest some of our ardent fans from a few years back. The girl in the First Communion dress is Virginia (Ackerman) Monforton SGH59. She is the mother of The Very Reverend Bishop Jeffrey Monforton, in Stuebenville, Ohio. Pictured next to her is her sister and my late wife, Kathryn (Ackerman) Morin SGH47. The group picture is of the Class of 1947. Kathy is third from the left in the front row. My donation is also enclosed, and thank you for the winter edition. My best regards to all of you! 7 REUNION WEEKEND—2014 (Day 2) NEW FAMILY EVENT PLANNED ALUMNI FAMILY PICNIC SATURDAY, AUGUST 9TH Dear Alumni, Let’s Picnic! My sister Aggie would like to receive our newsletter too. She went to St. Gregory through the sixth grade. We, as well as our sister Maria and our brother Pete, always talk about the good old days at St. Gregory and life in the surrounding area, remembering Livernois—the “Avenue of Fashion”. “The photo is the smiling faces of the Dattolo Family, the first prize winners in the contest for the best decorated car in the Homecoming Parade—1964. They are: Peter, Mr. B. Dattolo, Mrs. B. Dattolo, Stephanie, and Agatha.” Can’t tell you how much we enjoy the newsletter. The team is doing a fabulous job. Keep up the good work. Many of us are extremely grateful. Best wishes always. SHEILA OVINGTON, SGH53; Georgia When I visited Detroit in December of 2013, my son drove me around the old neighborhood I grew up in. BAKER, SGH49; Michigan Pertaining to bumping into St. Gregory Grads any place, near or far away—it’s really a small world. I had the pleasure of meeting Carl Krushinski SGH61, at the U.S. Army’s 5th General Hospital in Stuggart, Germany in 1963. Carl came into the hospital with a friend, to visit a patient on our medical-surgical ward, where I was working as an Army Trained L.P.N., MOS 91C70. While Carl was waiting for his friend, he asked me where in the States did I come from and I said Michigan. He said he also was from Michigan. He then asked me where in Michigan and I told him Detroit. He then asked what streets did I live on, and I said in the Fenkell and Livernois vicinity. Carl then asked me what school I graduated from and I said St. Gregory—then he said that he did too! I was shocked and surprised to meet a St. Gregory grad, over 6,000 miles from the school—and I was very happy to meet him. He really was a very nice and pleasant person. I was happy and pleased to shake his hand. I couldn’t believe that I would meet a St. Gregory grad so far away from home. It gave me a very happy feeling inside, hearing a nice voice from home. I served in the Women’s Army Corp from 1949 to 1972. I had spent from 1960-62 in Orleans, France at the 34th General Hospital. Then I was stationed from 1962-64 in Stuggart, Germany. SFC Mary M. Baker, USA Retired The St. Gregory Men’s Club has done much to assist the athletic program at St. Gregory. Through its financial efforts new equipment for football and basketball has been purchased. These men are very familiar to us for we see them handling tickets at the games, keeping order in the gym, soliciting ads for the football programs, selling patron tickets, etc. Each one of them has been generous with his time and efforts and we, the beneficiaries of all their work, wish to thank them and Reverend Father Bullion. Some of the members of this club are: Front row: Thomas Watters, James Walsh, Charles Hogan, Father J. Bullion, John Jensen, William Kent and James Rozsynai. Second row: Thomas Brand, Joseph Charnley, Joseph Giordano, John McGeary, John McFeely, and Raymond Dziewit. I am grateful to you. Domenic was a man of faith, and he died with the Rosary in his pocket. He lived in Kingman, Arizona and was killed some years ago by one of his employees. His widow, Bettie (Ford) Abate, was from the neighborhood also, going to Cooley High. Life is not always fair, but somehow we get through it. Our faith in a fair God is strong. The foundation of our lives is the Catholic education our parents gave us, and that is what sees us through the good and bad times. ELIZABETH (ALLEN) BRADLEY, SGH58; Michigan When the upper church was being built, I was working in the church getting ready for the dedication ceremony. A person came into the church and some of us girls approached the man and told him that the church wasn’t open yet and that we were trying to finish up because the bishop was coming to consecrate the church that Sunday. The man smiled and kind of laughed when he told us that he was the bishop! It was Monsignor Pokriefka’s mission in life to have a beautiful upper church building, and by-George, he did it—without bingo. He was opposed to bingo. My parents were married in the basement church and when it came my turn, I was married in that beautiful upper church. Over the years, I helped in both the upper and lower churches, under the eye of Sister Mary Peters. We trimmed the candles and vigil lights, dusted and tied all those bows for the cloth at the communion rail. That was a job! That was a looong communion rail! I also counted money in the rectory on Sundays. Memories will never let St. Gregory’s die. It was a very important part of our growing up and that’s something that goes on… MARCIA (SMIGELSKI) REISER, SGH69; Michigan I attended St. Gregory my junior year, 1967-68. My sister Valerie Smigelski attended 1966-67. Valerie passed away in 1998. I appreciate all the efforts to keep our community together. GERALD WEINZAPFEL, Salesian HS ‘61; Michigan I attended St. Gregory from the third grade through the ninth grade. Please add me to your St. Gregory Newsletter mail list. Even though I graduated from Salesian, my memories of the kids and the time spent at St. Gregory FAR outweigh the time spent at Salesian. I know more alumni from St. Gregory than Salesian. Many alumni toured the building after Mass at the invitation of the principal on Sunday, June 9, 2013. The gymnasium continues to be used by Coach Will Crume, who organizes and coaches a number of basketball teams made up of the kids in the neighborhood. The church building also appears to be in good condition and is not in use at this time. We understand that the altar and statues have been removed and sent to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Beverly Hills, Michigan. Baker’s Keyboard Lounge celebrates 80 years of the best in Jazz When the oldest running jazz club in the world turns 80, you have to make a big deal of it, which is what Baker’s Keyboard Lounge did in May, 2014, its 80th anniversary. The Baker’s Keyboard Lounge story began in 1934 when Chris Baker opened a beer and sandwich restaurant at the club’s current location on Livernois and Eight Mile Road in Detroit. The Bakers made it their goal to search out the finest jazz musicians and bring them to Detroit. For the 80th celebration shows, Baker’s Musical Director, saxophonist Allan Barnes, planned tributes to the artists who have played the club through the years. The Detroit Mass Mob, taking cues from a similar effort in Buffalo, made its second showing on Sunday, May 4, 2014 as organizers urged Catholics to attend the 11 a.m. Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Detroit’s east side. The Mass Mob got its footing in early April when 100 people showed up for Mass at St. Hyacinth Church in Detroit’s old Poletown neighborhood. Upcoming church visits include: July 13, 10 a.m. Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary Church, 4440 Russell Street; August 24, 12:00 noon Latin Tridentine Mass at St. Albertus Church, 4231 St. Aubin Street; September 28, noon M ass at St. Florian Church, 2626 P oland Street, Hamtramck; October 5, 11:00 a.m. Mass at St. Hyacinth Church, 3151 Farnsworth Street; November 16, 11:30 a.m. Mass at Our Lady Queen of Apostles, 3851 Prescott, Hamtramck. The purchase of more than 1,500 vacant city-owned lots on the city’s lower east side—a total of more than 140 acres—was approved by the city and state. The buyer, Hantz Farms, has committed to clearing 50 derelict structures, cleaning up the garbage dumped across the neighborhood, planting 15,000 trees, and mowing regularly. Planting of the hardwoods will begin in earnest this fall (2014) and the urban forest will be called Hantz Woodlands. We are sending this along to you per my Mom’s request, which I found in her funeral folder. I remember Mom telling all the stories of the St. Gregory Sisters, the classes, events and all of her friends. I have the July 2013 Newsletter and she is on page 15, on the bottom left. She is the one in the front row looking up to heaven. Just like Mom! She had pulmonary fibrosis for the last four years and she went peacefully. Now she is happy and dancing with “Louie” (Dad) in heaven. They were married in 1948 at St. Scholastica Church. After Dad retired in 1980, they spent many happy times golfing, league bowling, volunteering and traveling. Mom was an Eucharistic Minister, coordinator of the greeters, a member of the Pastoral Council and Rosary Altar Society. She was a volunteer and member of various local organizations too. They were blessed with one daughter, two grand daughters and four great-grandchildren. God Bless Mom! The market was the backbone of the neighborhood of Livernois, Wyoming, Fenkell and Lyndon, where families did their weekly grocery shopping. The market specialty was their fresh meat counter where butchers Bob and Fritz cut and trimmed meat daily. Bob and Nan (Ianelli’s daughter) were the produce, stock and cashier managers. The cashiers were Betty and Vi. The stock boys and baggers were many; Jerry Vimr, full time; Don Nash SGH58, Tim Driscoll SGH61, and myself, were part-timers. Nan would schedule my work hours so that I could play baseball and football at St. Gregory’s. She also scheduled my hours while I attended the University of Detroit. This staff worked at Ianelli’s until the store was sold. Some worked for the new owners, but not for long, as the conditions of work were not the same. I often told customers that I was hired because “Ianelli” was part of my last name. Margret and Vic and their staff were great people to work for. In the 50’s, the extended family of the Ianelli’s was involved with Motor City Speedway race track at the Michigan State Fair Grounds. 27 Clockwise: · Vernors Factory · Graystone Ballroom · Wetmore’s Alignment · Wigwam Trading Post · Sears Department Store · Ford Model-T Assembly Plant Woodward Avenue back in the day 28 KIDS IN THE FIFTIES Were you a kid in the fifties? Everybody makes fun of our childhood! Comedians joke. Grandkids snicker. But was our childhood really all that bad? Judge for yourself. Sixty years ago, in 1954, the U.S. population was less than 150 million, yet you knew more people then, and knew them better. The average annual salary was under $3,000, and yet our parents could put some of it away for a rainy day and still live a decent life. A loaf of bread cost about fifteen cents, and it was safe for a five-year-old to roller skate to the store and buy one. Prime time meant “I Love Lucy”, “Ozzie and Harriet”, “Gunsmoke”, and “Lassie”, and nobody ever heard of television ratings or filters. We didn’t have air conditioning, so the windows stayed up and a half-dozen mothers on the block ran outside when you fell off your bike. The only hazardous material you knew about was a patch of grass burrs around the light pole at the corner. You loved to climb into a fresh bed at night because the sheets were dried on the clothesline. Parents were respected and their rules were the law; children did not talk back. Your dad knew how to adjust everybody’s carburetor, and the dad next door knew how to adjust all of the television knobs. Grandma grew snap beans in the backyard and chickens behind the garage. Just when you were about to do something really bad, chances were you would run into your dad’s high school coach or the nosy lady from up the street, or your little sister’s piano teacher, or somebody from church—all of whom knew your parents’ phone number—and your first name! I remember the sound of the push mower on Saturday mornings, the smell of burning leaves piled at the curb, summers filled with bike rides, baseball games, the soda fountain, Saturday matinee double-features, hanging out in the alley with the gang; Kool-Aid powder, wax lips and bubblegum cigars. Didn’t that feel good, just to go back and say, “Yeah—I remember that!” ANNE MARIE (LOTT) DICICCO, SGH50; Michigan “Our 1950 Neighborhood” Dexter Boulevard, Fenkell and Livernois Avenues were the boundaries of our neighborhood. Shady streets, lined with elm trees. I remember the circus which set up tents along the railroad tracks, summer evening walks to Wilson’s for a double-decker cone, strains of music drifting from the Campus Ballroom above Cunningham’s; the Fenkell Theater and the Picadilly, where they kept well-stocked candy counters, and the drugstore at Dexter and Fenkell where I worked behind the soda fountain for fifty cents an hour. Those were the days. Remember when… Mom was at home when we got home from school; when a quarter was a decent allowance. Remember… Toting your friends on your handle bars; running till you were out of breath. Remember when the very first Honey Baked Ham Store was on the corner of Fenkell and Holmur? 29 In Memoriam We have learned of the deaths of these Alumni and Friends of St. Gregory School.
