Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 18th Annual St. Louis Microfest benefitting Lift For Life
Gym! Thank you for joining us this weekend. Please know that while you taste
international and craft brews, you are also giving hope to area youth and making a
positive difference in their lives.
Since 1988, Lift For Life Gym has laid the foundation for success in school and in
life for inner-city youth ages 8-18. Located in North St. Louis, the Gym gives more
than 375 kids a safe, enriching environment to strengthen their bodies, enrich their
minds, develop healthy social relationships, and learn to make positive life choices
each year.
Recently, we’ve expanded our youth programming to include cross-fit training,
Zumba, gardening, life skills training and more! Every day we strive to ensure that
the kids who come to the Gym have exposure to fun, active and healthy recreation,
as well as a free nutritious meal and safe transportation home.
Your support this weekend, and throughout the year, makes a difference every day in
the lives of our Gym kids. Your generosity and participation mean that together we
can continue to change lives and build brighter futures for our kids!
Please keep us in mind in the future as we need help year round to continue our
“Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds” vision.
Have a wonderful time and remember to be safe and drink responsibly.
Sincerely Grateful,
Joseph Miller

Jeremy Danner has been a brewer at
Boulevard for the past four years. During his time at the
brewery, he has played key roles in keeping Boulevard’s
current lineup of beers consistent, and he has been
instrumental in developing new beers as well as leading
discussions about craft beer with consumers. Jeremy began his career at Kansas City’s
75th Street Brewery and spent time as a brewer’s assistant at Power Plant Restaurant and
Brewery in Parkville, Mo., before joining Boulevard.

Cicero’s will be holding a mini beer school focusing on food
and beer pairings. Many people are familiar with wine pairings,
but especially considering the popularity of craft beer, food and
beer pairings are quickly becoming more common. Come to this
short seminar and find out what you should be drinking with
that snickers bar you are having for dinner. Guest moderator, Chad Jacobs, found his
passion for beer when his father Shawn, expanded the Cicero’s beer selection in 1996 to
their current offering of over 250 beers. Chad is also the permanent substitute teacher
of Cicero’s Beer School.

as well as the thought process behind each of them.
Aaron Horner began his career at a small craft brewery in Michigan before coming to
St. Louis to work in Innovations at AB. While at AB he has worked on various new
brands and line extensions in the Shock Top, Beck’s and Budweiser families. He has
also worked with various cross brewing initiatives as well as led festival beer production
for two years. Recently Aaron transitioned to the St. Louis Brewery where he is working
as a Group Manager and overseeing day to day production and process improvement.

Spontaneous Nugget From the dulcet tones and song stylings of
D Schmiddy, (not P Diddy) to the siren like
melodic tones of the soon to be “Folgers
Coffee” Primaries, to the ear splitting and
mildly nauseating shrieks of Warren Peace,
aka; Stevie Scallorn.
You must be prepared to wear flame
retardent clothing when wittnessing the
face melting guitar work of BC Carr. All the
ladies say his licks put him in a class all his own. Jimmy “Krackcorn” Krekeler and
Evan “Stone” Gatch, the bass and percussion of the Nuge, will awaken parts of your
inner rock soul that has remained dormant for far too many years.
Many people have wondered whatever happened to rock legends Roger “Coal” Ash
and Kenny “Finding Nemo” Niemann and AJ “Corvetta” Chivetta. Well folks, we
have found them pounding out the relentless rythms that the “Nuge” spews onto the
hoards of their evergrowing legions of followers. If that wasn’t enough, and it well
should be, what epic musical group would be complete without the zany madcap
stage antics of keyboardist Tim “Where’s my Lampshade” Hanser.
Be a witness to a rock-n-roll adventure into the sublime. Once you become “Nuged”
you too will know why this is “Live Rock at its Livest”. Get Yer Nuge On!

Sean Coray
Think of the Oscar winning movie, The Blind Side. If you
replace “football” with “music” you’ll have an idea of Sean
Coray’s story. Throughout his tough upbringing in St. Louis
Coray tenaciously refused to let circumstances break his
spirit, but used them instead to strengthen his character and
determination.
In 2008, he took every last penny he had saved, bought his first
guitar and began bringing his songs to life. Influenced by John
Mayer, Gavin DeGraw, and legends like Herbie Hancock and
Ray Charles, Coray’s sound is a sweet mesh of acoustic, jazz,
rhythm & blues and soul.
Last year, Sean released his first album and is on his way in the industry.

One Take
One Take plays a diverse mix of acoustic music
drawing on the soulful traditions of folk,
bluegrass, reggae, jazz and blues. Their blend of
styles appeals across age groups, and is for those
who appreciate music that is both energetic and
mellow. One Take was voted 2012 Best Folk
Artist by the Riverfront Times.
Saturday, May 4
8:00pm – 10:00pm
Hazard to Ya Booty
Hazard to Ya Booty was just another mid-level funk band trying to make it in St.
Louis. Then something happened. During an open jam one night at practice they
used an alchemy of funk, rock, and soul to
create a groove so powerful, so profound,
that the music itself became physical. The
funk had so much stank on it that the
room smelled funny, so the band laughed
and dubbed this new music CRUNCH
FUNK. Hazard has just completed work on
a full-length crunch funk opus entitled The
Precipice, which drops this spring.

Brauerei Aying has a long-standing reputation for excellence in
beer and hospitality. In the shadow of the Alps, nestled in the
1200 year-old village of Aying (pronounced eye-ing), Brauerei
Aying produces 12 different styles of beers, more than most of
the larger breweries. The Ayinger Brewery has been owned and
operated by the same family since 1878 and represents one of the
most pleasant and interesting small breweries which are typical of
Europe. Brewing good beer is the premier duty of Aying, and people come from all
over the world to sample the wares.

Since 1679, Liefmans is one of the cult breweries of the great

Southwest of Brussels, in the quiet Belgian town of Vlezenbeek,
the Lindemans family has been farming and homebrewing as
long as anyone can remember. Commercial brewing started in
1811. Lambic, or spontaneously fermented beers, are the beers
of this region and are among the world’s rarest: they are the
only beers fermented via wild, airborne yeast - no yeast is added
by the brewers. Lambics come only from the Senne River valley,
near Brussels - a region about 15 by 75 miles in size. The unusual, demanding, and
unique flavors that come from multiple yeast strains are unmatched in the world of
beer. Merchant du Vin introduced Lindemans lambics to the United States in 1979,

We are dedicated to making beer from the inside out: we brew what
we like to drink--with utter disregard for what the market demands-- and search out

Brian Mercer was a photographer with a great passion for
home brewing. Born and raised in Palos Verdes California,
he fell in love with the great beers of Belgium and founded
DARK CANDI after discovering unique brewing candy syrup that was the secret
recipe of Belgium’s greatest ales. Of course this evolution is what inspired Brian
to start his own brewing company, and in 2010, Brouwerij West was born. Brian
wanted to produce the dry, balanced beers that he fell in love with on his trip to
Belgium. So he took his classic recipes and started producing real, farmhouse-styled
ales that would make Belgium proud.

Crabtree Brewing
Greeley, Colorado - Founded in 2006
The city of Greeley is 50 miles north of the City of Denver, and
was one of the last towns in Colorado to get a microbrewery. That
all changed with the short lived opening of the Union Colony
Brewery. When the brewery closed in 2006, it was purchased by
Jeff Crabtree (who started brewing beer in his basement in 2003) by getting a loan
to purchase Union Colony’s equipment. Jeff started working with various fruits to
make his wild cuvees and started aging his small batch beers in oak casks to bring
out a splendid, and quite unique style of beers. In 2011, the Brewery produced
just over 1,000 barrels of his hand-made classics, and one of his unique beers (the
Saison) was named one of Colorado’s top 10 beers of the year.

The brainchild of multi-talented beer aficionado Jeppe JarnitBjergsø, this small Danish gypsy brewing outfit commenced
operations in the summer of 2010. In its first three years
on the scene, the Evil Twin has unleashed a mind-boggling 100+ new beers for
commercial release, and they’ve done so without they’re own brewery, using space
from their friends wherever and whenever they can get. An imperial black & tan
made in Scotland, check. An imperial IPA aged in Chardonnay barrels brewed
in Holland, check. A belgian-style strong blond ale brewed on a remote island of
Denmark, and then aged in 10 different high-end spirits barrels from around the
world, check. Indeed, there is virtually nothing Evil Twin hasn’t attempted. But
more impressive still is that there is exceedingly little that Evil Twin hasn’t perfected.
The culmination of the accolades no doubt reached its current pinnacle this year,
when Evil Twin Brewing achieved the rank of 10th best brewer in the world (and
top non-U.S. brewer in the world) according to Ratebeer’s annual list.

demand spanning across Europe with year after year of growth backed by additional
breweries. Heineken was first exported to America in 1880 but was halted by
prohibition in 1920. Following its repeal in 1933, Leo van Munching brought the
great brew back to the United States and made Heineken one of the most loved

Nectar Ales was founded in 1987 in Humboldt County
as one of California’s (and the nation’s) pioneering
microbrewers. Leading with its unique Red Nectar
ale, Nectar Ales helped blaze the microbrew trail and is today regarded as a true
California classic. Owned by Total Beverage Solution since 2012 and brewed on
California’s Central Coast since 2003, Nectar Ales is ultimately defined its tradition
of world-class quality, which resulted in Nectar Ales being declared “Mid-Size
Brewing Company of The Year” at the 2003 Great American Beer Festival, with
Nectar IPA being awarded the lone gold medal in its category. Nectar Ales Head
Brewer Matt Brynildson was named Mid-Size Brewing Company Brewmaster of the
Year at the 2003 & 2007 Great American Beer Festival and Champion Brewmaster
for Mid-Size Brewing Company at the 2004 & 2006 World Beer Cup.

The historic Ohio River town of New Albany, Indiana, was
a 19th-century stronghold of the brewer’s art, but by the late

microbrewing revolution of the 1990s paved the way for a revival.

1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (OK, make that a young man of 32).
As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with
“fat tires” through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium
Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For
Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins, Colorado with a handful
of ingredients and an imagination full of recipes. And then there was beer. Jeff’s first
two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named
Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was
history would be to overlook his wife’s involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium’s
first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. And now, she’s our
CEO.

Sacramento, California - Founded in 1881
When the Swiss-born Frank Ruhstaller purchased the City
Brewery/Buffalo Brewing Company in 1881, there were already
15 other breweries downtown Sacramento, which at the time was
the center of quality brewing on the West Coast. The brewery survived Prohibition,
but not the mass producers that sprung up during the Second World War and they
closed their doors in 1942. J-E Paino has resurrected the Ruhstaller name in quality
and spirit, and is even more dedicated than Frank Ruhstaller in using local barley
and hops from select local growers to produce his wonderful beers. Paino’s 1881 Red
Ale and Black IPA are the first releases under the Ruhstaller label and they are an
absolutely stunning start.

alcohol percentages that are well above average. The alcohol-by-volume content of
Stone brews ranges from 4.4% to well over 11%. Stone Brewing is consistently rated

Summit Brewing Company is a regional craft brewery in St. Paul,
Minnesota, that brews a wide selection of popular beers. It is
sometimes mistakenly believed to be a microbrewery, even though
Summit’s output is in the top 50 of breweries in the United States,
approximately 80,000 barrels of beer per year. The brewery was
founded in 1986 by local brewer Mark Stutrud and a group of
his friends in an old auto parts warehouse on St. Paul’s University Avenue. Their
beers quickly became local favorites, and the company began to grow rapidly. By
1998, the company’s beer production had exceeded the capacity of the original
University Avenue brewery, and a new brewery was built on the west end of St. Paul,
overlooking the Mississippi River. • EPA

the four basic ingredients preferred in the making of fine
