Civil War
The Tri-County area
is steeped in Civil War
history. Each county
has participated in West
Virginia Civil War Trails
to mark all of the Civil
War sites throughout the
area and open sites that
have previously been
inaccessible. Not only can
you explore the area’s
Civil War trails, but you
can also attend several
events throughout the year
that focus on history and
heritage, complete with
reenactments and walking
tours.

lazy day floating down the
river on a tube. The rivers in
the area are a fisherman’s
delight with waters full
of Rainbow Trout and
the native Brook Trout. If
you’re lucky, you may snag
a beautiful Golden Trout
who calls Petersburg it’s
“home.”

The range of opportunities for rest and
relaxation are astounding in Grant County,
as are the many opportunities for the
adventure seekers. With the advent of
each season, you can choose from many
diverse options that promise fun for the
whole family. Snow skiing, water skiing,
spelunking, hiking, canoeing, and fishing
are just a few of the pursuits that the area
boasts. “Leaf lookers” will also be impressed
with the breathtaking fall foliage that
envelops the mountains surrounding Grant
County. There are so many things to do from
touring Top Kicks Military Museum to riding
the dinner train at the South Side Depot,
fly fishing at Harman’s Luxury Log Cabins
private river access to hiking one or all of
the trails at Dolly Sods, touring Smoke Hole
Caverns to taking a canoe trip with Eagle’s
Nest Outfitters. And if water isn’t your thing,
take to the sky with Just Plane Adventures
for an air tour of the beautiful Mountain
Highlands. For the history buff, Fort
Mulligan is one of the many historical sites
that Grant County is home to. During Spring,
Summer, and Fall, motorcycles rumble
through the valleys and mountains of our
area for the beautiful landscape views. It’s
safe to say that when you visit Grant County,
you won’t run out of things to do.

Whether you desire a porch
swing or a full tilt climb,
plan to visit Hardy.
From paddling down the Trough, to hiking and
hunting in our forests, to sharing a romantic
weekend at a bed and breakfast, Hardy County
is home to many fascinating sites of interest,
including battlefields, historic homes and
cemeteries, and a national forest.
Take a tour of 10 Civil War markers and top it
off with a delightful serving of arts and crafts
at the Lost River Artisans Cooperative. Stay in
the heart of the artisan culture at one of Lost
River’s signature bed and breakfasts for the
Co-Op’s Fiber Festival over Memorial Day.
Experience what happens when past meets
present at our Heritage Weekend, which is held
annually on the last full weekend in September.
Historical reenactments, jousting, quilting, car
shows, tractor shows, historical home tours,
and train rides through the Trough make this
weekend event a memorable affair.
There are only two ways through the Trough
– canoe or train – and the ride is gorgeous in
early fall. Eagles are sighted on 90% of Trough
excursions.
Camping enthusiasts can visit Lost River State
Park or Trout Pond in the George Washington
National Forest. The serene beauty of the hills
and valleys is a wonderful starting location for
outdoor family adventures like canoeing, rock
climbing, fishing and geocaching.

A Picturesque Getaway
© Kent Mason
A camera will be the first thing you pack!
Home to Spruce Knob, the highest point in
West Virginia, and some of the most rugged
mountain terrain to be found on the East Coast,
Pendleton County is a picturesque get away
that exemplifies the slogan “West Virginia, Wild
and Wonderful.” With two national forests,
the Monongahela and the George Washington,
occupying a significant portion of Pendleton
County real estate, we offer some of the best
hunting and fishing in the Eastern U.S.
You will enjoy experiencing Seneca Rocks or the
Via Ferrata at Nelson Rocks. For those whose
quest for adventure is not quite so physically
demanding, Pendleton has a softer side.
From Native American history at the National
Forest Discovery Center to Harper’s Old
Country Store at Seneca Rocks to the charming
architecture of the town of Franklin, Pendleton
County beckons the history lover in us all.
Our heritage is rooted deep within the ridges
and valleys of our county. These accounts of
history are kept alive through events such as
the Treasure Mountain Festival and through
stories that are passed down throughout the
generations.
