We are thrilled to be bringing you a special Independent Music Issue honoring the labels, artists and bands that are the real
backbone of the music industry. As consolidations and cutbacks continue to haunt the major record labels, the real stories and
talent are to be found in the independent arena. In fact all you have to do to see how many new acts are getting their start just look
at our music charts. There you will find the mix of indie and major artists and how they really size up among our radio stations
and programmers.
Although many are out there looking to get the “big deal” and get signed, one must consider what has been going on as of
late. The deals that the majors have been offering artists and bands are not to their advantage in any way. They are now locking in
the new upstarts as publisher, manager, booking agent & record label all in one. It’s the only way they can make any money and
many of the newer acts are left with very little at the end of all this. For some, it would have been better to march along on their
own dime and at least attain a little control. The deals are just as bad for contestants on music shows like American Idol and The
Voice, but that’s seems to be the price paid for fame these days.
The only way to get a good deal to your advantage is to get your program started at radio on your own. The best plan is to
become your own label, build your team and go to work. Radio programmers are very open these days to good records regardless
of what label they are on. Once a band or recording artist builds a strong profile at radio, the labels will come calling but with a
much better offer. It’s called playing the field from a position of strength. Once you’ve got good numbers, then you can work with
a major and the points will be structured far more in your favor.
If you want to look at how it’s done the very best way, use the artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis as the perfect example.
They marched all the way to #1 on the pop charts many times on their own label. Most of it had to do with the fact that the music
was strong and radio loved it. The duo also was awarded multiple Grammy Awards and the rest is history.
For independent record labels, your best bet is to build a strong roster. Getting an imprint deal for your small label might
be just what the doctor ordered. You sign three to four acts, artists or bands and then build a story for each. Labels are not so much
looking for a “one-off”, but if you can provide a number of interesting acts, it then becomes a more viable commodity to them. It’s
strength in numbers they are interested in and it could make all the difference as you build your small label.
Most of what the independent artist or label needs to get started can be found right here on the pages of New Music
Weekly. Our panel of radio stations, from Top40, AC to Country, are open to new artists and music. Most of them could care less
about what label you are on, they are just looking for good music to program. In fact some of our programmers prefer to support
the indie artist or band over a major artist. The major labels don’t supply the goods and services they once did, especially to the
secondary market stations. Indie artists and their labels go all out to support radio and that can really make all the difference in
being successful in this very competitive field.

Newcomer Ariana Hodes is set to break at Country radio in the weeks to come with her debut single
“Brand New Key” (Ocala Records). Mike Borchetta help make the new discovery for his Ocala Record label and joining Big Round Music, only good things are on the horizon. Her first love however
is acting and for most hopeful young actresses, it was a long, hard stretch of highway between
Concord, New Hampshire and Beverly Hills, but Ariana made the journey seem easy. This Summer she’ll hit the road again for a move to Nashville with her eye on the prize of Country music
success. Born into a musical family, performing has always been in her blood. “My mom was in
a folk band at the New England Conservatory in Boston when she placed an ad for a guitarist.
My dad was a student at Boston College Law School and answered the ad. Soon they formed an
award-winning family rock-band called Peggosus. ”My parents used to take my brother and me
with them to their gigs. We were their roadies, stage hands and even handled the merch table. I
was always around show business and started performing in community theater plays and musicals when I was around 13.” It wasn’t long before Hollywood started taking notice and this dark
haired beauty began to rack up an impressive list of stage and screen credits, but Ariana wanted
more. In early 2014, she decided it was time to spread her wings and return to her musical roots.
With mentoring and guidance from old family friend, Mike Borchetta, and his wife, Martha, Ariana entered a recording studio. Her first single, a soulful, bouncy cover of Melanie’s seventies
mega hit “Brand New Key”, is ready to hit the charts and Ariana is anxious to once again hit the
road. This time she’ll meet and perform for Country radio programmers and their staffs. “Music
has always been a strong presence in my life and of equal interest to me creatively as acting, writing and producing -- but the real catalyst for this effort was realizing that I felt incomplete when
not singing and making music. I’m doing this to find my voice, literally and figuratively.” We’ll be
following her success story closely here at New Music Weekly and we all wish her the very best.

Miley Cyrus has held on to a new
formula for making hits thanks in part to
her new image and label change. “Adore
You” (RCA/RLG) is her latest and it fits exactly where she’s at these days
and that’s in a pretty smart place. Newcomers Nico & Vinz are finding
love from radio programmers. “Am I Wrong” (WB/WEA) is the jam that
seems to be pulling in calls and tweets every time it gets played. Many
of our music and program directors concur that there is something very
special going on here. Fitz & The Tantrums are making the most of their
ten seconds of fame. They may just keep it all going as their new “The
Walker” (Elektra/WEA) takes flight. We’ll see how it all plays out for them
in the weeks and months to come but so far we have a solid winner here.
The Kongos are an act to be watched closely. Better than that just throw a
couple of spins in for “Come With Me Now” (Epic/Sony) and get your listeners
all riled up. It’s been working for a good many of our reporters. One Republic
seem to never run out of gas and that should be of no surprise to those that have
been following them. Mark another gem down for their latest in “Love Runs
Out” (Interscope). There is a good shot that this could be their very next #1
single. Iggy Azalea has teamed up with Charli XCX for a real gem and make no
mistake about it. “Fancy” (Island) is the track that is setting the music world on
fire. Remember that you heard about them first right here on the pages of NMW.
Tinashe joins the always brilliant Schoolboy Q for a real miracle. “2 On”
(RCA/RLG) is their new one and it’s getting raves from many of our music and
program directors. You may need to spend a little time with this one by the water
cooler. Magic is another act that is killing it out there in radio-land. “Rude”
(RCA/RLG) is the single and I must tell you that this one is so catchy that I
can’t get it out of my head. Alicia Keys brings some brilliance into Top40 radio
just when we need it most. “It’s On Again” (RCA/RLG) is her latest and this
one I believe is her best so far over the past few years. We’ll see how it all plays
out and watch it make some bold and beautiful moves in the weeks to come.
Ed Sheeran has found a way to set Top40 radio on-fire and make
no mistake about that. “Sing” (Atlantic/WEA) is his latest and radio
loves this track almost as much as they love Taylor Swift. It sure was a
smart move for Ed to spend some time with her as it’s opened up a bigger
fan base for him to be sure. Phillip Phillips is making his American Idol
family proud. “Raging Fire” (19/Interscope) is such a great track for
this talented guy and you can expect this one to become another music
anthem. That Shakira &Rihanna pairing continues to reap big rewards.
“Can’t Remember To Forget You” (Sony Music Latin) is fast becoming
everybody’s “top of the hour” song and for good reason, it’s just that strong.
I don’t really care what anybody thinks, to me the best song out there
is by an act called The Chainsmokers. “Selfie” (Dim Mak) is so funny and
brilliant that it stands on its own merit. It might be a song that burns out fast
but while it’s on you can really feel the heat. Beyonce continues to work her
magic at the format. So many songs are coming off her latest album project
that we’ll just have to see where “Partition” (Columbia/Sony) ends up. So
far most of the tracks have found their way towards the top but seem to slow
down. This is all set to change very soon for this super talented lady of music.
Idina Menzel is finding love out there for her “Let It Go” (Walt
Disney) single. Recording artist Benzo is finding much support for his
debut smash “Heart Beat” (New Terra). Bad Mary is moving fast and
furious with their stellar “Better Days” (Dead Pill). Ed Barker and Lance
Ellington have a huge hit with “When You Smile” (EBR) and newcomer
Ethan Bortnick is set to take over with his “Anything Is Possible”
(Symphony Of Keys). I’ll have more for you next time my good peeps.

Ed Sheeran has released one of
his best to date. “Sing” (Atlantic/WEA)
is such a huge hit that it’s busting out
across multiple formats, This kid has come a long way from living on the
streets and his story just keeps getting better. The Neon Trees are a real
crowd pleaser. We are thrilled to see that their current single “Sleeping
With A Friend” (Mercury) being welcomed with open arms. We wish this
multi-talented outfit the very best with this fresh and exciting cut. Ingrid
Michaelson is getting a real buzz out there at radio. It’s all due to the fun
and exciting “Girls Chase Boys” (Cabin 24) that is just getting stated.
Paramore is fast becoming one of the break-out bands so far this year.
Their new and powerful “Ain’t It Fun” (Fueled By Ramen) is just what this
band needed to going from underground to super pop band. You can bet
you’ll be seeing and hearing some bigger things ahead from this amazing
act. Andy Grammer is back at the format and that’s always a good thing.
The single “Back Home” (S Curve/EMI) is just what he needed to get back
on the charts and in a very big way. U2 can always light up a playlist and
they will be doing it again. “Invisible” (Interscope) is the touch of magic
that many of our AC music and program directors have been waiting for.
Ethan Bortnick is a name that you may not be that familiar with but
that is all set to chance. His new single “Anything Is Possible” (Symphony
Of Keys) is nothing short of brilliant. It’s topped our “most added” chart for
weeks now and the single is starting to break up the charts at record speed.
Please remember that you heard about Ethan Bortnick first right here on the
pages of NMW. Newcomer Susan Toney is also getting plenty of attention at
the format. The single “The Trail Of Light And Dark” (Strange Child) is the
song that is helping to make great things happen for her and for good reason.
Better Than Ezra are back and proving once again that they are the
real deal. “Crazy Luck” (End) is such a great record that we expect to
see big things ahead. Some of our key programmers agree that this one
has what it takes to break into the Top10. The magical duo of MacLear
& Quinn are having an amazing run up the charts. “Only One For Me”
(Meg) is the track that is making it all happen, Recording artist Sam Smith
is off and running at the format. “Stay With Me” (Capp) is really a great
track and watch for some special things ahead for this talented artist.
His Dreams Of Lions are fast becoming a very big deal. “Novel”
(Droggmore) is their debut single and this track has had nothing but amazing
weeks. The band is here to stay for awhile. British alto sax player turned
super recording artist Ed Barker is on fire. He has teamed up with vocalist
Lance Ellington for the brilliant smash “When You Smile” (EBR). Jennifer
Ashley is beginning to make some major noise at the format. Her new single
entitled “Back Where We Started” (SNMG/RED) is on fire and building steam
fast. She’s an 18 year old singer from Long Island New York. Jennifer is
currently is a first year business student at F.A.U. University in Jupiter Florida.
The group Bad Mary is breaking fast with their stellar debut “Better
Days” (Dead Pill) and it just keeps getting better for them. Allen D continues
his magic as his “You & The Night & the Music” (New Terra) builds stronger
each and every week. Marsha Jewell continues her #1 ways and we are
so happy for her. The brilliant single “Butterfly” (Jewell Lane) has been
impossible to beat, especially on our AC40 Indie chart. Her state of Arkansas
got hit recently with some bad tornados and we wish her and the area a speedy
recovery. All of us hope that you enjoy this very special Independent Music
Issue as we all had a blast putting it all together, I’ll have more for you on the
greatest AC hits across the good ole USA next time right here my good friends.

LEAD TO NASHVILLE
If you’re a musician, at some point, the city of
Nashville will be in your plans.
Music City USA has earned its namesake. For decades, aspiring young, and not so young country artists
have packed up all of their belongings and moved to
the birthplace of country music as we all know it. A
few were overnight successes.
It took others a while to make a splash.
And still others found odd jobs and waited years,
and finally got their break.
While it’s true not everybody that sets out to become a country superstar makes the grade- in fact, it’s
hard to be considered in the Nashville elite as an “A”
lister- that doesn’t stop many from finding out what
all the fuss is about.
Nashville is still country music’s home. But it’s
quickly becoming the home for artists of all genres to
see, and be seen.
There is one particular area that Nashville is successful in keeping traditional, and deems it important
enough every year to draw radio station programmers
and music directors to the city. Sure, it’s a party to
some extent, but the Country Radio Seminar- CRS- is
not duplicated anywhere in the country by any other
radio format.
There’s a lot to be said about your country music
superstar. I take notice and pride in the fact that when
an artist wins an award, more times than not, they will

thank RADIO as part of being their success. Country
artists take the time to talk to stations, and in turn
their audience base, and make them feel like they’re
part of the family. Because, really, the listener is to
the true country music artist. And vice versa. That’s
why radio stations like the legendary WSM are known
worldwide.
Country programmers mingle with artists and attend seminars each year that both inform and entertain.
Networking is everything. And it is much easier now
than ever before to network and never spend a dime on
hotels, meals, and functions. But then, you miss out
on the true meaning of CRS. Shaking hands. Have a
beverage. Share ideas. No matter WHAT you do in
life, it’s always better to try and do it in person. CRS
has never lost touch with that human element.
CRS brings all together once a year to place a face
with the name. Many programmers have gone for years.
Many go one year, and move on, and never go again.
Same with promoters and record label personnel. But
truth be told, CRS is really a must-attend function for
programmers, and artists, too. Showcases for new artists are months in the planning for a one hour set to grab
somebody’s attention.
It’s not by fluke that the Grammy awards named a
country crossover hit, “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum, as the song of the year. This multi-format hit
had a hook that was unforgettable and all of us could
relate to that one person that we really “needed” at some
point in our life.
Country is real. Country is home. Country is roots.
Most, if not all that attend every year, leave with those
sentiments. And a sad realization that it will be another
year before we all come together again.

‘Xscape’

Jackson’s posthumous album ‘Xscape’,
speaking to L.A. Reid and an all-star cast
of producers who re-imagined archival
tracks by the King of Pop. Reid tells
Billboard how ‘Xscape’ -- eight tracks
of Jackson vocals set to new music
from Timbaland and J-Roc, Rodney
Jerkins, Stargate and John McClain, the
former A&M Records executive who is
co-executor of the Jackson estate with
Branca -- came to be. At first, Reid says,
“I had no idea what was in the vaults.”
But he says this now with a smile, and
the confidence that comes with pursuing
an unorthodox strategy and creating
something no one believed possible an album that deserves to be discussed
in the context of the remarkable music
that Jackson made from Off the Wall in
1979 to Invincible in 2001. When first
listening to the source material “You can
hear [Jackson’s] foot in the booth when
he’s singing, and his fingers snapping,”
says Jerkins. “It was all raw, it was real. It
wasn’t like, ‘Take the snaps out, take the
stomps out.’ No - it’s real. It’s him in the
booth, and he’s feeling what he’s doing.”
Minaj ‘caught acting bug’
Nicki Minaj wants to do more
acting after ‘getting her feet wet’. The
musician stars in The Other Women,
with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann.
Although her role in the film was
small, Nicki wants to be able to pursue
more roles while still maintaining her
music career. “It gave me an idea as
to what the world would be like...
And now that I know it’’s something
I can do, I think I want to expand a
role eventually,” she told MTV News.
Nicki is currently working on her
third studio album, the first since
2012’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.
Despite her busy schedule, the 31year-old would consider making a
film if the perfect role came along. “I
am going on auditions, and I’’m trying
to find the right role with the right
director and the right writers,” she
said. “I want to be part of something
from the beginning stage this time,
and I want the role to be custom-made
for me.’ Nicki wouldn’t rule out any
genre, and says she hopes to make
another comedy some day. She is also
interested in high-budget action films.
‘I have such a versatile personality,’
she explained. ‘Some days I feel like
I wanna do a Will Ferrell comedy;
some days I feel like I wanna do more
like a Set It Off-type of movie with
some other young black actresses
and like creating a movement with
that. And sometimes I think, maybe
I could do X-Men or something.”

Music Career In Up-Swing
Young recording artist Jenna Rose
has been making quite a name for herself
in the music industry. Her biggest boost
came by way of You Tube when her song
“My Jeans” hit over 16 million views.
That has propelled her to bigger and
better things. As of late this young pop
sensation finds herself touring with the
likes Jill Jenson from X Factor to IM5,
the Simon Fuller/Perez Hilton discovery.
Everywhere she performs she seems
to win stellar reviews and her fan base
keeps building by leaps and bounds. If
you happen to be in the Atlantic City

Ozzy:
Where are the rock stars?
Ozzy Osbourne is clueless as to who
will ‘carry the flag’ for rock stars from
now on. The 65-year-old musician was
the frontman of legendary band Black
Sabbath and has also had a successful
solo career. Having now left his wild
days behind, Ozzy admits he’s concerned
about who can take over his reputation.
‘That might be a very true statement,’ he
commented to Kerrang! magazine when
asked if he thinks music is suffering from
a lack of rock stars. ‘I honestly don’t know
who’s going to carry the flag in the future,
but I wish someone would hurry up. None
of us are getting any younger, you know.’
Ozzy also named one of his idols in the
music industry. Insisting someone must
be an ‘extrovert’ to be considered a rock
star, he explained why he looks up to
one particular musician. ‘David Bowie
comes to mind. He’s always original with
his image and music. Nowadays, I have
a problem telling who’s in the band and
who’s in the crew ‘ no one looks like a
rock star!’ Ozzy mused. The raven-haired
singer landed the 23rd spot in Kerrang!’s
50 Greatest Rockstars In The World Today.
Asked why he thinks he made the list this
year, Ozzy believes his band helped him
gain the title. ‘[Why?] Probably because
I’m Ozzy Osbourne!’ he quipped.
‘But the past year, with the success of
Sabbath’s 13 album and the world tour,
probably didn’t hurt.’ Lastly, Ozzy
revealed he never dreamed of becoming
such a big name in music, revealing
he thought he’d end up a plumber.
John Lennon
coat at auction
John Lennon’s Coat to be Auctioned
by Nate D. Sanders Auctions A personallyowned coat by Beatle John Lennon will
be auctioned by Nate D. Sanders on April
29. Interested bidders may participate in
the auction online. Lennon’s size 3, blue,
cropped coat, designed by Great Coat
Fireman, features an asymmetrical design,
epaulettes and silver tone metal buttons.
Andrew B. Harvey was given the coat in
1978. Harvey’s certificate of authenticity
states, ‘’This British fireman’s coat once
belonged to John Lennon. It was given to
me in 1978 by Jon Hendricks, my (then)
common-law wife’s uncle. Brothers Jon
and Jeff Hendricks own adjoining houses
on Greenwich St. in the West Village.
They jointly run (or ran) a mail-order art
gallery called Backworks. Both Jeff and Jon
were involved in the art movement know
as ‘fluxism’ as was Yoko Ono. Through
this they got to know the Lennons in the
early seventies. Jon got the job of minding
Julian Lennon on a trip (or trips) across the
Atlantic. In 1978 we went to stay with Jon
for a few weeks. He told me the fireman’s
coat hanging in the hall had been left there
by John Lennon when he’d called in a few
months earlier. I think that was the last time
he saw John Lennon, (but his brother must
still have been on good terms with Yoko
because later, in 1982, he invited us on a
New Year’s eve jaunt in a Rolls that she had
lent him and some friends for the evening).
Jon asked me if I wanted the coat, as I was
off on a cross-country hitch-hiking trip and I
didn’t have one. I wore it through a couple of
hard years. It may well be the coat that John
Lennon is wearing on the back of the British
album release (I think) as ‘Life With The
Lions’, - unless he had several of them. The
picture shows John and Yoko surrounded by
British policemen, after John’s drug bust.’’
In 1996, Connecticut Beatles collector
Keith Marron obtained the coat, which
he owned until he put it up for auction
through Nate D. Sanders. Mark David
Chapman assassinated Lennon in 1980 at
the entrance to his apartment building, the
Dakota, on the west side of Manhattan.
A Strawberry Fields Forever memorial
was created in Central Park ‘ not far from
Lennon’s Dakota residence ‘ in memory
of the revered musician and former Beatle.
Duran Duran in studio
w/ Ronson and Frusciante
Duran Duran are back in the
studio working on an album with
John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili
Peppers) and Mark Ronson. Duran
Duran proved in 2010 that they are
still a force with the album All You
Need is Now and it appears they
are looking to make that force even
stronger with the addition of the two
major collaborators. The band is in the
studio working on their 14th studio
album with producer Mark Ronson
who produced Now and has been
behind tracks on such albums as Back
to Black by Amy Winehouse, Alright,
Still by Lily Allen, 19 by Adele,
Off With Their Heads by the Kaiser
Chiefs and New by Paul McCartney.
On Wednesday, they confirmed a
rumored second collaboration for
the set with former Red Hot Chili
Pepper’s guitarist John Frusciante.
The band had wanted to keep his work
a surprise but the constant talk finally
forced them to issue the statement:
We were holding this exciting news
because we were hoping to give you
full details when we announced, but as
word has leaked out, catching us rather
off guard, we wanted to confirm. yes
it’s true, the extraordinarily talented
John Frusciante has indeed been
doing some work from his home base
in California on our new album. The
tracks have been going back and forth
via the internet, and we are thrilled
with the results. We are all such big
fans of John’s work and are honoured
to have him adding his magic to the
record! There are no current plans
for John to tour with us, but his
guitars sound incredible on the tracks.
Smokey Robinson’s
ex-wife suing over royalties
Smokey Robinson could soon see
a windfall of money from some of his
earliest compositions and his ex-wife,
Claudette Robinson, wants a piece of
the action. The Copyright Act of 1976
included a clause that is currently coming
due allowing artists to regain the rights
to their older songs that they may have
given up early in their career when they
were hungry or not knowledgeable in the
ways of the business. A number of artists
have already filed claims for their music
as has Robinson. The songs that he is
seeking are some of the biggest hits from
the early days of Motown, ones that are
still played regularly on the radio and
are generating sizeable royalty incomes.
Claudette was obviously aware of the
money that potentially could be coming
to her ex-husband and contacted him
about the royalties; however, Smokey
filed a lawsuit in March to try and negate
any claims she might have. Last Friday,
Claudette took her own action, filing
a countersuit claiming that 50% of the
royalties from songs Smokey wrote while
their married should belong to her, but she
didn’t stop there. She has also claimed
that Smokey had breached his fiduciary
duty and committed constructive fraud
by not declaring the possible windfall,
scheduled far into the future, during
1989 proceedings after their divorce.
According to Smokey’s lawyers, the
provisions of the 1976 Copyright Act only
apply to the actual songwriter; however,
Claudette’s lawyers have countered
saying that Congress never intended to
preclude the rights of those who would
normally have shared in the royalties. The
Robinson’s met while performing as the
Miracles and were married for 27 years.

singer was part of boy band ‘N Sync
for seven years before releasing his
first independent album Justified in
2002. Justin wrote a song for Michael
years ago, but ‘N Sync used the track
instead, which led to an interesting
conversation with the King of Pop that
changed the musician’s career forever.
“It was one of those songs where, it felt
a little more personal to me, because I
had written it for the biggest artist of all
time,” Justin recalled in a forthcoming
episode of Oprah’s Master Class. “I
guess Michael did hear it, and called me
on the phone and said that he wanted to
cut the record, but he wanted it to be a
duet between himself and I. And I said,
‘Well, it’s already out, we’ve already
cut the song as an ‘N Sync record ...
could we do, like, an ‘N Sync featuring
Michael Jackson, or Michael Jackson
featuring ‘N Sync?’ And he was very
absolute about the fact that he wanted it
to be a duet between himself and I.’ The
star claims he never really entertained
thoughts of becoming a solo artist
before speaking with Michael. “I think
it’s the first idea that I ever got about
doing something on my own because
it was the first time I ever really
felt the confidence to do it,” Justin
explained. The 20/20 Experience singer
went on to sell millions of records
worldwide as a solo artist. Justin’s

will air on OWN network May 11.

Bloom have reportedly been getting
“cosy”. The 21-year-old singer started
dating pop bad boy Justin Bieber in
2010 and it’’s thought their on/off
relationship is currently on pause. Now
it’’s being speculated that she’’s finding
comfort in the 37-year-old actor, who
announced his split from wife Miranda
Kerr last year. According to New
York Post’’s Page Six, the pair looked
“cosy” as they attended the Chelsea
Handler show on Saturday night. The
publication claims that Selena and
Orlando arrived in the same car and
then left together afterwards. The
Pirates of the Caribbean star is keeping
things friendly with model Miranda
for the sake of their three-year-old
son Flynn. Meanwhile, Selena’’s split
from 20-year-old Justin has been
acrimonious. Over the weekend, Justin
posted a picture on Instagram, showing
him gesturing at the camera in Central
Park. The star hinted that he was feeling
bitter about his turbulent love life in the
caption that accompanied the snap.
“Was gonna wait to go to Central Park
for when I proposed to my future wife

with Orlando could be part of the steps
she’’s reportedly taking to keep her life
on track. TMZ recently claimed the
brunette had cut certain people out of
her life, including Kylie and Kendall
Jenner, so she could focus on her
music. Part of the reason for allegedly
culling the famous sisters could be that
she fears 16-year-old Kylie was getting
close to Justin. ‘Selena is convinced
something has gone on between Justin
and Kylie,’ an insider told British
newspaper The Sun. ‘At Coachella
they looked to be back on track. Selena
was hanging out with Kylie too and
they were behaving like best friends.
‘Then she heard stuff about Justin and
Kylie and felt totally betrayed. She
went berserk and called it all off again.’
Rihanna ‘leaves Def Jam’
Rihanna has reportedly signed
with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. The Pour It Up
hitmaker recently fulfilled her deal with
Def Jam and decided to make a switch
to the rapper’s label, which has managed
her career since 2010, MTV News
reports. A source at Def Jam apparently
told the outlet Rihanna made her move
in April 2013, when Jay made a deal
to partner Roc Nation with Universal
Music Group. Def Jam will reportedly
continue to market Rihanna’s music,
however. Rumours of the label change
were sparked early on Monday, after
Complex magazine noted Rihanna was
being branded as a ‘Legacy’ artist on

“On the road again...” Country recording artist and Highway Angel program
spokesperson Lindsay Lawler will hit the road later this month for her second
consecutive Highway Angel Truck Stop Tour - and TravelCenters of America LLC
(TA) has just announced its reprised role as host to this year’s series of events. The
tour, designed to promote a better trucking industry image through the exposure
of the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) Highway Angel program, will kick
off later this month at the Knoxville West TA location on May 21st beginning at 9
am. Spanning five months (the tour will wrap in late September), performances
will also take place in Nevada, Alabama, Virginia, New York and Minnesota.

The 15th annual St. Jude Country Music Marathon & ½ Marathon
presented by Nissan, recently hit the streets of Music City. Featuring
many of Nashville’s best live bands on 28 stages along the 26.2 and
13.1-mile courses, the musically themed road race attracted over 30,000
runners, walkers and junior racers. Continuing its historic tradition of
combining great country music with the premier running event in Tennessee, Television actors Charles “Chip” Esten and Clare Bowen, who
play Deacon Claybourn and Scarlett O’Connor on ABC’s hit television
show “Nashville”, co-headlined, the post-race concert at the Bridgestone
Arena to an enthusiastic and packed crowd. Chris Carmack, who plays
Will Livingston, on “Nashville”, joined the line up as well as surprise
musical guests, Sam Palladio, who plays Gunnar Scott, Chaley Rose,
who plays Zoey, as well as Lennon and Maisy Stella who play Maddy

Miley Cyrus was ‘poisoning’
herself without realising, she has
revealed. The Wrecking Ball singer
spent more than a week in hospital
earlier this month after having a bad
reaction to medication she had been
prescribed for a sinus infection. Earlier
today on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show,
the 21-year-old spoke for the first time
about her ordeal since being released
from hospital last Thursday. ‘I’m
doing good, much better,’ she said.
‘It was so scary. I had basically been
poisoning myself with something I
didn’t know I was really scary allergic
to. It was insane.’ Miley had to cancel
numerous dates of the American leg
of her Bangerz tour while she was
receiving treatment in Kansas. But
for someone renowned for being full
of energy, Miley soon grew restless
while trapped in her hospital bed. ‘I
was crying because I was so bored.
I’m laying here hooked to all these
machines. Every two hours, some
woman comes in and pokes me with
a needle, just miserable,’ she recalled.
‘I’m just laying here with nothing to
do. I was begging the doctors, ‘Let me
out to go do the show!’ It was basically
no way.’ The medication she was
receiving during her stay made her
lose her appetite. But she did manage
to find one surprising exception
which helped her get through the
week. ‘I wouldn’t eat anything cause
the medicine made me sick except
[Southern country themed chain
restaurant] Cracker Barrel. So all I did
for five days was be on steroids, get
myself better, and eat Cracker Barrel,’
she laughed. Now Miley has recovered
from her allergic reaction, she will
resume her tour in Europe on Friday.

Rock dies of stroke
DJ E-Z Rock, who hit the Dance
top ten in 1988 with partner Rob Base
on It Takes Two, has died at the age of
46. No details have been announced
on how the hip-hip artist, born
Rodney Bryce, died, although the site
AllHipHop News has stated that he had
been ill and died of a “massive stroke”.
The news was announced on Twitter

Base. Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock,
friends in Harlem since fourth grade,
released their first single, DJ Interview,
in 1987 on the Mike and Dave label and
followed with Make It Hot on Worldto-World. Word of mouth brought them
to Profile Records in 1988 where they
released their first major, It Takes Two.
The song went big, especially on the
streets and in the clubs, going to number
3 on the Dance chart, 17 on R&B and
36 on the Hot 100. The single, plus the
album of the same name went Platinum.
They followed up with Get On the
Dance Floor (1988 / #1 Dance / #6 Rap)
and Joy and Pain (1988 / #58 Pop / #11
R&B / #9 Dance / #5 Rap), cementing
them as one of the most innovative stars
on the rap circuit. Their sound was a
mix of multiple genres and stayed away
from rap-only lyrics, using samples
from artists like James Brown and Maze
Featuring Frankie Beverly, bringing the
hip-hop sound more to the mainstream.
It was that use of sampling that got the
duo into trouble with Frankie Maze
taking them to court. Base ended up
dropping DJ E-Z Rock in late 1989 and
going it alone, saying that Bryce had
“personal problems”. They reunited
in 1994 for the album Break of Dawn.

Rising star Lindsay Ell realized a life-long dream recently when
she stepped into Country music’s hallowed circle, marking the 25year-old Calgary native’s Grand Ole Opry debut. The Stoney Creek
Records artist performed her critically-lauded debut single “Trippin’
On Us” in front of a sold-out crowd and on a bill that also included
Country stars Hunter Hayes, Jana Kramer and Nashville’s Sam Palladio, among others. Ell performed three songs total, showing off
her musical prowess with performances on both electric and acoustic

Hendersonville, TN. The couple
bought the house in January 2006 and
planned to renovate the structure before
moving in; however, a spark ignited a
preservative being used by workman in
April 2007 and the building burned to
the ground. The Gibbs originally talked
of rebuilding on the property, using the
original foundation, but nothing came
of the plans and, on March 18, they
sold the land to a Lakehouse Holdings.
Overall, the Gibbs took a $300,000
loss on the property, having originally
purchased it for $2,300,000 and selling
for $2 million. Sir McCartney ‘has no

Country Radio Seminar
2015
Country Radio Broadcasters,
Inc. has set Feb. 25-27 as the official
dates for CRS 2015, held in downtown
Nashville, Tenn. at the Nashville
Convention Center. “One of the first
signs of spring is Country Radio
Seminar in Nashville, and again in
2015, CRS will launch the year in
country radio and music,” said CRS
President, Charlie Morgan. “Again
this year, our event will kick-off on
Wednesday, February 25 and run
through our New Faces Show on
Friday night, February 27.” Early bird
registration for CRS 2015 will begin in
mid-July. Panels and speakers will be
announced leading up to the seminar.
Sherry Lynn’s rip-roarin’ good time “Girls Will Be Girls” video debuted this week
on CMT.com. The “Girls Will Be Girls” clip offers a visual feast filled with fun
images of classic cars, a bachelorette party and lissome line-dancers, while the
song’s hooky chorus and melodic riffs make for a toe-tapping sonic boom. Tom
Frkovich (Kennedy Center, Amazon, United Way), produced the video, which was
filmed in New Jersey. Various locations include the Tombstone Saloon (Buena),
Joe’s Lean To Garage (Franklinville) and Paulsboro High School (Paulsboro).

Tim McGraw made a smart move
taking his wife Faith Hill out for dinner and
a duet. Together they make beautiful music
as “Meanwhile Back At Mama’s” (Big Machine/Universal) pulls in stellar
numbers. Watch this gem move the #1 in record time. Brad Paisley has
another gem on his hands. The master guitar player/vocalist is taking his new
“River Bank” (Arista Nashville) out for a spin and the results are amazing.
Blake Shelton could take a lesson from Tim McGraw about taking your wife
in for a duet. Instead Blake teams up with Gwen Sebastian for “My Eyes”
(Warner Music Nashville). She does a decent job when you can actually
hear her in the mix. This single should also find a place at #1 any time now.
Josh Thompson is off and running and radio is loving his action big
time. “Wanted Me Gone” (Show Dog/Universal) is the tale that many of
our music and program directors just can’t seem to get enough of. Dustin
Lynch is fast becoming a real favorite here at NMW. The single “Where It’s
At” (Ind) is all that good and more. Those Brothers Osborne are at it again
and the results are magical. “Rum” (EMI) is the tasty cocktail they are out
and about with and it’s getting some great reaction from our panel. Chase
Rice is also getting raves for his latest release. “Ready Set Roll” (Columbia
Nashville) is being added to Country playlists from coast to coast and
we are tracking his action which at this point is extremely impressive.
Kacey Musgraves is becoming one of our favorite Country gals. Not
only has she penned hits for others, she keeps one for herself in “Keep It To
Yourself” (Mercury Nashville) and that suits us all just fine. Easton Corbin
keep pulling in the votes and calls for his latest and greatest. “Clockwork”
(Mercury Nashville) is the one that’s keeping him at the top of the pack.
Clinton Gregory has teamed up with Collin Raye to make some music
history. “Some Real Good People” (Melody Roundup) is so good that
you’ll have to throw some extra spins in for this hot track just because we
said so. Cole Swindell is also making some of the bet music out there these
days. His new “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight” (Warner Music Nashville)
is pulling past many others and watch it blast to the top very soon.
Chris Young has got it all going and he keeps building his castle. “Who
I Am With You” (RCA Nashville) is another one to add to his already strong
list of hits. Our good pal Lee Brice seems to be on a good patch that keeps
getting stronger. “I Don’t Dance” (Curb) is his latest and greatest and many
of you out there in Country music land know just what I’m talking about.
The Band Perry keep the heat on just about everybody as their brilliant and
strong “Chainsaw” (Republic Nashville) takes bigger and bolder moves.
This is our special Independent Music Issue so let the spotlight
shine on some of those artists. Natalie Stovall is getting a strong buzz
at Country radio. It’s all thanks to her “Baby Come On With It” single
that is pretty strong. Michelle Cupit is basking in the spotlight. She can
credit her “She’s A Trainwreck” (Cupit) for all of the recent activity.
There should be smooth sailing ahead for this strong recording artist.
Marianne Allison is rocking strong with a new track. “Til
It Breaks My Heart” lets us know that the indie movement is alive
and well. Juanita Rose is also getting a strong buzz with a masterful
little song called “The King Of Country Music” (Sims). Ocala and
Big Round Music bring us Ariana Hodes and radio is set for a thrill.
“Brand New Key” is her release and with the brilliant Mike Borchetta
running the program you know that big things are set to happen.

C arrie Underwood is no stranger to the word “reality.” After all, as the winner of the 2005 season of
“American Idol,” she won the hearts of millions of viewers across the world. Now, the singer has entered into
a promotion that is sure to please her fan following.
S ony Music Nashville and Aurasma, the world’s leading augmented reality platform, have partnered
to launch an augmented reality promotional campaign for Underwood’s No. 1 album, “Blown Away,” which
was released in May.
U sing the free Aurasma Lite app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices available from the iTunes App
Store and Google Play, fans can launch exclusive video of Underwood that is triggered by aiming the device
at the cover image of Blown Away. The video leaps from the Blown Away image on the mobile device or
tablet and provides a click-through gateway to the album at the iTunes store. The promotion was launched
in Nashville recently at the CMA Music Festival.

Music Nashville chairman and chief executive officer. “We are excited to embrace a cutting-edge technology like augmented reality to help give fans

U pon its release on May 1, “Blown Away” made history by debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country albums sales chart making Underwood
only the second country artist in the 47 year history of the chart to have each of their first four albums debut at No. 1. “Blown Away” also debuted at
No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart making Underwood only the second country artist in history to have three consecutive albums debut at No.
1. “Blown Away” became country’s best-selling digital album debut since 2010.

Y esterday, Underwood performed the first of four concerts on the Australian leg of her tour to promote “Blown Away.” She kicked things off in
Melbourne, and will perform in Tamworth and Brisbane on Friday and Saturday, before finishing things in Sydney on Sunday. Also, Underwood has just
released the title cut as the second single -- to follow up the chart-topping success of “Good Girl,” which became her fifteenth number one record.

teacher. Sheryl Crow - long before she hit it big in 1993 with
“All I Wanna Do,” was actually a music teacher at Kellison
Elementary School. Though her teaching days in school are
long over, Crow - who turns an amazing 50 years old today has educated many of her fans about some of Country Music’s
greatest performers, such as Loretta, Hank, and Johnny Cash.

‘Hopefully, People Learn
From My Mistakes’
Since 1992 and the success of a song called “Achy Breaky Heart,” Billy Ray Cyrus has learned
all about busy schedules. Over two decades later, there is no sign the Kentuckian is slowing
down. The singer is promoting his latest album “Change My Mind,” and has also just released
his autobiography “Hillbilly Heart.”
“It’s a very busy time,” he told Billboard over the weekend at Nashville’s Parnassus Books.
“There was a song that I had a record on a few years ago called ‘Busy Man.’ I have found myself
living those words in keeping up with all of this,” he said, referring to his top five smash from
1999.
Cyrus goes into great detail about his youth in the book, with one memory concerning his father
being a recurring theme of Hillbilly Heart.
“Well, he gave me a lot of advice, but chapter one is called ‘Life Ain’t Fair.’ It’s the story about
when my mom and dad were getting a divorce. I knew everything was messed up and different
in my family as opposed to other families in Flatwoods, KY. One day, I asked him why things
were like they were, and he pulled over, looked me in the eye, and said ‘Son, life ain’t fair. The
sooner you realize that, the sooner you can move on.”
Cyrus said he has replayed that conversation several times since whenever life’s highway has
gotten rough. “Sometimes, you’ve just got to call it like it is, and do the best you can do with
what you’ve been given. You work hard at your goals and your dreams. The book is dedicated
to the dreamers. That’s another thing I learned from my dad -- no dream is too big to achieve.
You’ve just got to chart a course, set a plan, and vow to pursue it.”
When asked what he would like readers to take from the book, he says “There were a couple of
times in my life where the rocket ride got a little fast, and you pray for purpose. I think it was a
bit of my purpose to write this book. Hopefully, people might learn from my mistakes. I’m very
honest about some of the ones I’ve made. If I can save someone from making some of the
same ones, I think that’s the rhyme and the reason of the story. There’s also a few things I did
right, and I think that’s something that some folks can borrow from and maybe help them to
reach their goals and dreams.”
He also talks about the stories of many of his biggest hits, including “Ready, Set, Don’t Go,” a
2007 duet with daughter Miley.
“It was about those moments that you have in life as a daddy, where you see your little girl grow
up. You think you’re ready to let go, and you prepare yourself for that moment, and you’re set.
Then, as she’s saying goodbye, you want to reach out, hold her a bit longer and say ‘Don’t go.’
I still live it every day. I’ve got another little girl who just turned thirteen, Noah, so I’m living it
through her. A lot of daddies and daughters have written me stories about that song, and how
the song was played at weddings or graduations. One dad wrote me about taking his daughter
to join the Army, and they listened to the song before they got out of the car. Things like that are
the reason why I bought a guitar and started a band. The music touched somebody’s life, and it
tends to make sense.”
Having went through the whirlwind of “Achy Breaky” and “Hannah Montana,” the singer says
“I’m at a pretty good spot in my life. I’ve written a bunch of new songs for an album I’m going
to record this summer. I start a new movie the first week of May called ‘Like A Country Song’
that is filmed here in Nashville. I filmed a pilot with Randy Travis called ‘Still The King’ -- I play a
dysfunctional Elvis impersonator who becomes a preacher. Randy’s the sheriff. It’s a great story,
and I think it will find a home pretty soon. I love acting, being a singer / songwriter, and being
here in Music City at this time in my life -- coming full circle with the book is quite unique.”

Are you up on These Hearts? Ryan Saunders, vocals, Kyle
Colby, guitar/vocals Isaiah Folk, drums, Daryl Van Beek, guitar
and Tyler Rice, bass make up this super red hot band. The recent
release of the lyric video for “Miserable” has ignited their fans
anticipation for their forthcoming sophomore album “Yours To
Take” available this month. The new album can be heard live on
the band’s headlining album release tour beginning in Joliet, IL.
The band’s sound is a combination of honest, refreshing, spirited
pitch-perfect harmonies with dynamic and emotive breakdowns.

The New York based indie rock band Born Cages is set to
release their Sidelines EP via Razor & Tie. The band will hit the
road this summer as well. Born Cages new EP was produced
by Jon Kaplan (Walk The Moon, Augustana) and Oliver Straus
(Arctic Monkeys, Matt & Kim) at Mission Sound in Brooklyn,
NY. The band is finishing up their debut full length album to be
released later this year. The New York City based Born Cages
formed in 2011. Within one year the young band had already
released an EP, opened two sold-out shows for Guns N’ Roses
and shared stages with such bands as Gold Fields, Mother
Mother, and Ludo. The band has had music played on Q104.3
in New York and recently recorded a session at the Gibson
NYC showroom that premiered on Purevolume. They were
also featured on a large billboard in Times Square as part of a
Toshiba promotion. Born Cages is Vlad Holiday (lead vocals/
lead guitar), Amanda Carl (keyboards/backing vocals), Steve
Kellner (bass guitar/backing vocals) and Dave Tantao (drums).
John Tejada has a new exclusive mix for Halocyan Records
entitled “Somewhere” via Pitchfork. Have you been following
Halocyan Records? This is a global dance brand and record
label launched by Dimitri Fergadis, an acclaimed musician and
founder of the LA-based experimental electronica label Phthalo
Records. Halocyan is dedicated to representing not just the
present and future of electronic music, but also its rich history.
Halocyan believes that a strong sense of historical roots is an
essential launching pad for bold voyages into the unknown.
New York City-based retro songstress Joanne Weaver sets
out to the Dominican Republic this month to shoot her new
music video for “Nature Boy”, the latest single off her debut
album Interstellar Songbook which she released in June of last
year. The concept album is a collection of Joanne’s unique,
psychedelic renditions of eight classic standards from the 40s,
50s and early 60s and is available on iTunes and CD Baby.
