// INTRODUCING HYPA WORKS - SYC’S YOUTH EMPLOYMENT HUB
In 2014 SYC proudly launched the first youth employment
hub in Adelaide, called HYPA Works, powered by iiNet
Business. HYPA Works is designed to provide a framework
within which to develop youth employment opportunities
that help young people transition from school or further
education into the workplace, as indicated by SYC’s
My First Job initiative.
According to SYC’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Edginton,
HYPA Works provides the ideal framework for helping
young people get into work or develop their own work.
“We have been working on this model for some time
now and it’s very heartening to see it come to life and be
embraced by young people and business owners alike,”
Mr Edginton said.
“Youth unemployment is way too high in Australia, and
especially so in some of the more disadvantaged areas,
so having a hub that develops, grows and fosters youth
employment opportunities is increasingly necessary to
do our bit in overcoming this problem.”
There are currently three youth employment initiatives that
sit within the HYPA Works hub, each working separately
but with strong connections and collaboration between all
three. With start-up funding support from the Department of
Education, HYPA Works has been created to provide

genuine opportunity for young people to gain real life work
experience and to help them develop employability skills
that will result in either being employed or setting up their
own business.
One of the three initiatives Bizifyd, a social enterprise
that trains young people with an interest in social media
and technology to run their own consultancy business,
providing affordable counsel to small businesses that
don’t have the time or knowhow to maximise opportunities
through social media.
The program includes six weeks of business training,
involving business planning, marketing, customer
excellence, communication and more, and six weeks of
authentic work experience with the support of business
coaches to engage with small business and provide social
media services.
The model has already been welcomed by small business
owners in South Australia, with eleven businesses having
signed up for the Bizifyd service.
Fleurieu business owner, Cheryl Lush from Lush Pastures,
was one of the first South Australian business owners to
sign up for consultancy from the young people at Bizifyd.
According to her, it’s an opportunity to finally get amongst
social media properly without having to skill up and
spend inordinate amounts of time developing and
monitoring content.
“Having an enthusiastic young person working with me will
mean I can still have input but can leave the interrogating
of data, video editing and creating content to him/her. I also
like the concept of giving young people real life experience
and helping them succeed.”
Other youth employment initiatives that are part of
HYPA Works are HYPA Transitions, a program specifically
designed to help young people transition successfully from
learning to working, and Work’d Up, a work experience
initiative that provides young people with the opportunity
to learn what it’s like to work, what it takes to be a good
employee and how to make the most of work opportunities
they are given. This is done through extending work
experience opportunities for up to six weeks with close
mentoring and support given.
“Basically we want to make sure that young people are
given a fair go” says Mr Edginton.
“There are so many young people who are desperate to
work but for whatever reason cannot break through to
get that first run on the board. We aim for HYPA Works to
facilitate that break for them.”

2014 TRAINING PROSPECTS GRADUATION CEREMONY
On Wednesday the 5th of November, Training Prospects invited students who completed their studies in 2014 to
celebrate their achievements at the annual Training Prospects Graduation Ceremony, along with friends, family,
trainers and colleagues.
The graduation ceremony was held at the Playford Civic Centre with 300 students and guests in attendance.
74 apprentices and trainees were praised for their achievements and presented their certificate of completion by His
Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AO, Governor of South Australia and SYC’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Edginton.
2014 also saw graduates from our new HYPA Works Bizifyd initiative awarded certificates of Small Business Management
on completion of the program.
Mark Gorringe, General Manager of Training Prospects, acted as MC for the evening, and was happy to see that the
Training Prospects Graduation Ceremony once again increased in popularity. He said, ‘It’s great to see that with each year,
our numbers continue to grow, both in terms of students graduating and their family and friends who come along to show
their support. It really demonstrates the high levels of dedication and passion these students have.’
Students were shown great support by local and industry organisations who were willing to contribute as sponsors,
with Renewal SA Playford Alive once again acting as Event Sponsor. This year Australian Brick & Blocklaying Training
Foundation (ABBTF), Business SA, MEGT, St Patrick’s Technical College, PR Electrical Wholesalers, Southern Cross Industrial
Supplies, Auspex, Rheem and PIA all acted as Certificate of Excellence sponsors.
On behalf of Training Prospects we would also like to give a special thanks to His Worship the Mayor of the City of Playford,
Glenn Docherty, Mr Lee Odenwalder, Member for Little Para, SYC Chairman David Hallett, SYC Board Members and all
family and friends for attending the Graduation Ceremony, and showing the students a tremendous amount of support.

RECOGNISED BY INDUSTRY
REGULATOR
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), the national
regulator for the vocational education and training (VET)
sector, invited Training Prospects late last year to become
an Approved Delegate of the regulator.
This process is a key element of the Federal Government’s
reform packages designed to reduce the regulatory
burden on business generally and specifically the scrutiny
on training providers with a track record of compliance.
The invitation was only extended to high performing RTOs
with a history of compliance with the national standards
and that already met the eligibility criteria to apply for a
delegation of regulatory responsibility. It gives the RTOs the
ability to manage their own scope of registration without
the need to apply to ASQA and pay a fee each time they
wish to add a new qualification or unit of competency to
their scope of registration.
This means that the process of broadening our offering is
made more streamlined and therefore encouraging for us
to do so, which in turn is good news for our students, both
existing and prospective.
As an Approved Delegate of the Australian Skills Quality
Authority, Training Prospects is required to have a
documented quality assurance system to manage VET
regulatory functions and operations.

// JOB PROSPECTS WINS WORK FOR THE DOLE PILOT PROGRAM IN NORTHERN SUBURBS
The Department of Employment has rolled out eighteen
Work for the Dole pilot programs across Australia, in order
to connect young job seekers with the local community,
whilst gaining valuable employment skills, and improving
their chances of finding a job.
Adelaide’s Northern suburbs were elected as one of
eighteen pilot areas before the scheme rolls out nationally
in July 2015. Congratulations to our employment services
division Job Prospects who successfully secured one of
three Work for the Dole Coordinator positions in the North.

On Tuesday 16th September an induction session was
held for all three Coordinators by the Department of
Employment. Job Prospects Work for the Dole Coordinator,
Rino Caprioli reports that “since the induction a large
number of places have been created to increase the skills
of job seekers, with most positions filled, which is a great
outcome for the program.”
Participants in the Work for the Dole program will work with
not-for-profit organisations, charities, councils, sporting
clubs and schools, to gain skills and experience necessary
to gain employment in today’s workforce. The type of
work participants will be undertaking is varied and will
reflect each individual’s interests and career aspirations,
some examples of which are construction, administrative
and retail roles.
Congratulations to Job Prospects for winning this tender,
SYC is proud to be a part of the Work for the Dole program,
assisting jobseekers aged 18 to 30 years of age gain the
skills and experience necessary to transition into
the workforce.

The 2014 Sunday Mail City-Bay was held on Sunday the 21st of September, and SYC was well represented with just
over 100 participants running or walking in #TeamHYPA. We were joined by HYPA’s Youth Leadership Team who walked
alongside SYC employees, families and friends, which was great to see.
This year City-Bay was not only about increasing brand awareness, for the first time we utilised the event as a fundraising
opportunity for HYPA Housing with our #TwoFeet campaign. Over $6,500 was raised, with twenty-three people registered
to fundraise – an excellent outcome for SYC!
After the race #TeamHYPA were able to celebrate their achievements and relax at our #TeamHYPA tent located at Wrigley
Reserve. Here we held a complimentary BBQ for #TeamHYPA participants, thanks to the six volunteers who generously
donated their time to organise and set up the village site, thank you all for your hard work.
Our 2014 City-Bay efforts were the largest thus far, and in 2015 we hope to further develop the event, so make sure you
keep an eye out for your opportunity to join #TeamHYPA at the 2015 City-Bay. Thank you to everyone who participated on
the day, generously donated to #TeamHYPA and raised money for HYPA Housing.

GIVING TREE ALL
WRAPPED UP
In 2014, our Christmas Giving Tree went digital, with an
option for donations to be made online through the HYPA
website, along with traditional gift donations. No matter
where you are, or how busy you might be, donating to the
HYPA Christmas Giving Tree was only a few clicks away.
In total, $2,350 was donated via the website, and an
abundance of gifts were placed under our HYPA Christmas
Giving Tree at our Currie Street head office. These
donations enabled HYPA to provide a wide variety of
presents to the young people accessing our services.
Gemma, an eighteen year old originally from New South
Wales was presented with a bus ticket to return home
to her birth family in time for Christmas. She is now
permanently living in New South Wales, and wouldn’t
have been able to reconnect with her family without
assistance from our HYPA Christmas Giving Tree.
Once again we received a generous number of gift
donations. HYPA was selected as charity of choice for
Christmas 2014 by Behind Closed Doors, a national
network of business women, which resulted in over 30 gift
donations, a very generous effort.
We also received generous support and donations
from within our organisation. Job Prospects Mount
Gambier raised $380 which was spent on presents for
HYPA’s clients in Mount Gambier and the South East
region. Training Prospects raised $300 which they used
to purchase an assortment of presents for the HYPA
Christmas Giving Tree.
According to Rebekha Sharkie, Head of Donor Relations,
“we were able to give most of the young people accessing
our services a Christmas present, which was a really great
outcome.”
It is fantastic to see such tremendous support for our HYPA
Christmas Giving Tree, both externally and internally. Thank
you to everyone who purchased gift/s or donated online.

HYPA 100 LAUNCHES
A crisp October evening saw more than 40 donors
to SYC gather for drinks hosted by Mercedes Benz
Adelaide followed by a celebratory dinner at the home
of Leigh McClusky and Simon Haigh to launch HYPA
100, a group for people who want to contribute to the
work of HYPA at a very personal and involved level while
also connecting with other people who have similar
philanthropic attitudes and interests.
Joining HYPA 100 requires a donation of no less than
$1,000 per person, per annum. There are no other
obligations for being a member of HYPA 100, although
members are offered opportunities to get involved in
SYC fundraising activities of their choosing.
Guests enjoyed food by esteemed chef Chris Jarmer and
wines from Wirra Wirra in a relaxed, enjoyable environment.
Thanking those attending for their support, SYC Chief
Executive Officer, Paul Edginton, said that funds raised by
HYPA 100 would be put towards maintaining and operating
HYPA Housing and building new apartment blocks in other
Australian cities so that more young people can benefit

from the affordable, independent living pathway that HYPA
Housing offers.
HYPA Fundraising Chairman, Kieran Purcell said that every
dollar raised by HYPA 100 goes directly to benefit the
young people that HYPA supports. “Our aim is to have
100 members each year, thereby raising at least $100,000
towards HYPA’s work.”

Australia’s growing youth unemployment rate and the issues young people face in securing and maintaining their first
job is an important issue to SYC, which is why we established the My First Job Initiative in 2012 with the aim to bring
greater awareness to this issue. In September 2012 the teenage unemployment rate was 25.1%, this had grown by
July 2014 to 29.7%,

Through SYC’s work with young people and our
advocacy on youth employment issues, SYC knows youth
unemployment is a national issue, requiring a national
approach. Collaboration is key and therefore a nationally
focused My First Job Working Group was established in
2014, made-up of representatives from SYC, The Smith
Family, Group Training Australia, Jobs Australia, the
Commonwealth Department of Employment and major
national employers Coles, McDonald’s and Westpac.

Through a six month process in 2014, the Working Group
produced the My First Job White Paper, Improved Job
Outcomes for Young People: A Plan for enhancing
Employment Services for young people leaving education
and joining the workforce. This White Paper provides a
framework for the effective engagement of young people
and employers for positive employment outcomes. It was
presented to Assistant Minister for Employment, Hon Luke
Hartsuyker MP, at a dinner at the National Press Club in
October.

who are already making a positive impact by supporting
young people transition successfully from education to
employment.

// STACEY’S INDEPENDENCE IS GEARED2DRIVE
For 21 year old HYPA client, Stacey, gaining her driver’s
licence was like finding her wings of independence.
Stacey was one of those young people who didn’t have
access to a fully licenced adult who had a car and who
could supervise her driving for 75 hours so that she could
get her Provisional licence. This is a common problem for
many young people, one that our Geared2Drive program is
designed to address.
The Geared2Drive program gives young people like
Stacey the opportunity to get their driver’s licence,
something that otherwise would be extremely difficult if not
nigh on impossible. It does this by making cars and trained
volunteer drivers available to eligible young people, made
possible by the support of program sponsors, EPAC Salary
Solutions and Peter Kittle Holden.
We would like to thank the following donors and

A driver’s licence opens many doors for young people. It
gives them greater access to employment, accommodation
and to their family and friends. Therefore not being able
to gain their licence can prove to be a significant barrier
to them getting their lives on track in the most positive
manner.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day event held
by the HYPA Youth Leadership Team, details to
be confirmed soon.
This was the situation for Stacey. Being unlicenced meant
her opportunities for work were limited and moving house
was logistically very difficult.
• 20th September
#TeamHYPA undertakes the 2015 City-Bay
Fun Run
She was referred to HYPA as a Geared2Drive candidate,
and she now has sufficient independence to visit her
grandmother in regional Victoria, something she had not
been able to do for a long time.
Stacey was also able to substantially improve her weekly
income after acquiring her driver’s licence and gaining
access to a car (a gift from her Grandmother).
