Bridgewater State College Research, Education, & Community Involvement in the Marine Sciences Project Marine Wildlife Research A collaborative effort involving BSC, NECWA and Capt. John Boats. Bridgewater State College (BSC) offers undergraduates a unique learning experience in the field of Marine Sciences. BSC collaborates with The New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) and Capt. John Boats (CJB) to create a program that provides: Education & Outreach Activities BSC undergraduates present their findings at scientific conferences and provide presentations for the general public. hands-on experience with field research techniques opportunities to learn data management and analysis techniques real-life experiences in the field of marine sciences experience in public speaking and community outreach Through internships, BSC students are involved in 2 main projects: BSC undergraduates collect sighting data and photographic images aboard Capt. John Boats. Project Marine Wildlife Research New England Basking Shark Project (NEBShark) NEBShark Data managed and analyzed using techniques in photo-ID and Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.) mapping. New England Basking Shark Project A community marine sighting network that trains public volunteers to report sightings of basking sharks and ocean sunfish in New England waters. By involving the general public, NEBShark helps to connect the “human community” with the “marine wildlife” community that shares our coastal areas. Visit our website to learn how you can support these efforts as well as provide sighting information that will help us learn more about the biology and ecology of these magnificent coastal pelagic fish.
