Moore & Giles: For the Love of Leather
T
alk to anyone at Moore & Giles for even
the shortest length of time and you soon
realize they are passionate about leather.
Fervently so.
“One of the things we say is that we love
to discover leather in unexpected places,”
remarks Daryl Calfee, Director of Marketing
and Creative Services. And when they do
make a discovery, their find quickly becomes
an inspiration—for new products, designs,
even ad campaigns.
In fact, the idea for the ad on the facing page
was sparked when members of the Moore
& Giles team caught a glimpse of the 1962
Thunderbird belonging to the owner of Hancock and Moore. “It’s the sort of sight that
gets us excited and makes our hearts beat
faster,” Calfee explains.
This fervor for leather permeates the entire Moore & Giles operation, from product
development to customer service. “Our
design team travels the world searching for
inspiration that we can translate into leather,”
Calfee says. They also source the globe to
find the very finest hides, from Italy, Spain,
and France, to Germany, New Zealand, and
Thailand.
No surprise, then, that Moore & Giles isn’t
content to simply hand off the tanning process to a third party. “We work directly with
the tannery at every stage, which gives us
more control and consistency,” he states. “It
also means we can create custom colors or
patterns that are exclusive to our customers.”
As for ordering, it’s the ultimate model of
flexibility—customers can order one hide or
20,000. “And we keep leather in stock, which
is highly unusual in our industry,” Calfee
states. “As long as it’s not a custom order, we
can generally ship next day.”
“We’re proud of our 82-year heritage,” he
says in conclusion. “We do whatever it takes
to bring our customers the finest natural
leather, just as they want it.”

Bella-Dura®: Where Beauty Meets Performance
I
t’s the ultimate in performance fabrics. Durable. Sustainable. Anti-microbial. UV resistant.
Bleach cleanable. And 100% American made.
Bella-Dura® has been delivering on its tagline
“Performance by Design” since 2005 with
its revolutionary fabric, which offers inherent
attributes that make it a leader in indoor and
outdoor applications.
“Our fiber technology sets us apart,” explains
Susan Lobel, Vice President of Marketing &
Brand Development. “There is nothing applied
to the fabric to make it perform well—it’s inherent in the proprietary yarns.” Bella-Dura is solution dyed, meaning the color is integrated into
the fiber, making it highly resistant to fading.
Beyond this, Bella-Dura offers abrasion resistance exceeding 50,000 double rubs, and UV
resistance of 1,500 lightfast hours. Bella-Dura
has also received numerous industry acknowledgements, including C2C Silver Certification,
and the C2C Products Innovation Institute’s
Legacy Leader honor.
But toughness doesn’t come at the expense of
beauty—and Bella-Dura is uncommonly beautiful. “As design leaders we want to inspire our

customers with each new line,” remarks Sarah
Keelen, Senior Sylist. “Over the past year our
look has evolved dramatically as far as graphics, texture, and color. We’ve invested in many
new tools including 30 new yarn colors, a
mélange boucle, and higher end count warp.
People are going to discover a new look from
Bella-Dura, especially with the large offering of
sophisticated textures we’re presenting.”
Launching in June is the Bella-Dura Fall 2015
collection, the most extensive collection to date
from the Bella-Dura design studio. This collection features sophisticated plush and boucle
textures, modern geometrics, striking statement jacquards, and signature pleats patterns.
Additionally, the company’s By the Yard Series
3 will be shown, offering 40 new SKUs available to ship within 24 hours. The latest By the
Yard Collection was designed to give furniture
manufacturers a high-performance option for
organic, modern textures in a wide range of
neutrals.

Prismatek & Höpke: Performance Meets Comfort

partnership with Höpke Mobelstoffe International. And the results offer a value proposition not found elsewhere.
high degree of German engineering and quality at an affordable price. But the state-ofthe-art technology extends beyond its fabrics,
and includes a robust ERP system as well as
a Web-based design tool manufacturers and
retailers can use to match fabrics to frames
and room settings.
“Since joining forces with Höpke, we’ve expanded our ActiveLine™ collection of highperformance fabrics,” states Anke Kondek,
President and Co-Founder of Prismatek. And
ActiveLine is not the typical performance
fabric, to be sure. The collection is antibacterial, and offers superior stain protection as well
as water and oil repellency. But most of all it’s
comfortable—very comfortable.
In addition, Prismatek offers duty-landed pricing as well as a robust in-stock program, making logistics relatively carefree. “With our partnership with Prismatek, we can tap 1.5 million
meters of fabrics at any time, which means we
can turn orders around in five to seven business days,” says Olaf Maier, CEO and Founder
of Höpke. “And we’ve hand selected the items
we know—after extensive market research—
will do well in the U.S.”
“After two successful editions of Showtime, we
have received great feedback from many leading manufacturers for our ActiveLine,” states
Bob Arnold, Business Development and Sales,
Furniture Manufacturers. New for June 2015 is

trend-forward colors such as lime and yellow.

Dieter Kondek, Co-Founder of Prismatek,
sums it up this way: “With our extensive experience with hospitality and design trade projects, we know how to handle the ‘un-doable.’

VALDESE WEAVERS ACQUIRES DICEY MILLS
Valdese Weavers LLC, has purchased Dicey Mills
Inc. based in Shelby, N.C. The company has begun
integration of Dicey, and expects completion of an
orderly and deliberate transition of the business into
Valdese facilities by the end of December 2015. Valdese
Weavers negotiated a transition services agreement
for the right to operate Dicey’s Shelby facility to ensure
a seamless integration and high level of service to
customers. The new Dicey Fabrics showroom is located
at MSTT 6th Floor.
CLASSICAL ELEMENTS BUYS ALHAMBRA
Trimming, tassel, and decorative hardware supplier
Classical Elements has purchased Alhambra Decorative
Drapery Hardware Co. The acquisition of the Torontobased firm, which was founded in 2003, will widen
Classical Elements’ hardware assortment, adding a
totally different aesthetic. The purchase also adds a
new customer base both in the U.S. and Canada for
Classical Elements, which has set up a new operation in
Asheville, N.C. to handle acquired domestic production.
The company plans to offer an extensive range of new
products, a sampling of which will be shown during
June’s Showtime Market.
ROBERT ALLEN LAUNCHES NEW WEB SITE
Robert Allen has launched a new Web site with
enhanced features for the design community. Found
online at robertallendesign.com, the new site includes a
variety of features, including a color search function that
runs along the top of each page, which allows designers
to access the broad range of colors available. Designers
can search by color palette or upload an image that the
site will match with coordinating Robert Allen fabrics.
The site also includes a slide-based search system, an
inspiration page, and designer spotlights.
ALTIZER & CO. DEBUTS NEW COLLECTION
Bombay-born textile designer Seema Krish has created
a new collection of fabrics for Onyx Age, a division
of Altizer & Co. Decorative Textiles. The Passages
Collection’s fabrics boast jewel tones and patterns with
a cultural flair, bringing customary Indian color paired
with transitional and traditional designs to interior living
spaces. The new Passages Collection was inspired by
traditional Indian designs and include techniques such as
hand embroidery, block printing, and jacquard weaving
to create plush textures and hand-tailored fabrics.
Showtime Cover Competition
Educational
Foundation
2015 June Winner
Fibers student Lærke Lillelund Michaelsen of Savannah College of Art and Design is the 2015 winner of the ITMA Cover
Competition. Lærke’s design, titled “Graffiti,” is inspired from Australian aboriginal and graffiti art. It is a combination
of the spontaneous line work of graffiti, and the patient and thought through process of painting with dots, as seen in
aboriginal artworks. The colors are mainly drawn from aboriginal inspirations, but the shapes themselves represent the
knotted futures of graffiti letters on walls. SCAD is a private, nonprofit, accredited institution conferring bachelor’s and
master’s degrees at distinctive locations to prepare talented students for professional careers.
Lærke Lillelund Michaelsen
SCAD
2014 December Winner
Fiber major student Tina LaRussa of the College for Creative Studies was the 2014 cover competition winner.
LaRussa’s design, titled Mushrooms and More, was inspired by her Italian heritage. “Eating and cooking together
is an everyday pastime,” LaRussa explains. “Mushrooms play an important role within Italian culture, and Italians
are known for going mushroom hunting every fall in the forest or mountains.” The line work of her design is a
stylized interpretation of the gills found underneath the caps of mushrooms, and the color choices were selected
to represent the aging process of these intricate fungi. CCS is a private, fully accredited college educating artists
and designers to be leaders in creative professions.

The “Other” Market in High Point
“Those of us in High Point
are always eager to welcome
Showtime,” remarks Tim Mabe,
President and CEO of the High
Point Convention and Visitors
Bureau. “In fact, the economic
impact of ITMA exceeds $1.6
million each and every time
exhibitors and buyers honor us
with their presence.”
Beyond the economic impact,
however, High Point Market
insiders agree that a vital
interdependent relationship
exists between the United States’
largest dedicated textile, leather,
and trim show and the furniture
segment. “A strong symbiotic
SUITES AT MARKET SQUARE
or “the suites”
relationship between High Point
Market and Showtime is good
for both events and the entire
industry,” explains Tom Conley,
President and CEO of High Point
Market Authority. “We are always
looking for ways to help all the
players understand trends, source
raw materials, and locate service
providers.”
Jerry Epperson, Founder and
Managing Director of investment
banking and research firm Mann,
Armistead & Epperson, Ltd.,
echoes Conley’s sentiments.
“I cannot imagine being an
upholstery manufacturer in any
segment and not going to the
most important market to see
the upcoming trends in pattern,
colors, and textures,” he states.
Mabe sums it up this way: “We
view fabric selection as part of
the design process. You can’t
have one without the other.”

The suites house more than
140 well-established suppliers
in addition to smaller suppliers,
new vendors, and groups of
international suppliers. It is also
the location for educational
seminars, special exhibits,
snacks, food, and social events
featuring food and drink.

MARKET SQUARE TEXTILE TOWER
OR “THE TOWER”
Bella-Dura®, the Discover Collection
Ask anyone in the furniture
industry about “Market,” and High
Point Market is likely top of mind
for most individuals. But insiders
are quick to give equal time to the
vital importance of Showtime—
High Point’s “other” market.
“MSTT”
An easy walk from the Suites
through Market Square takes
you to the elevators for the
tower, home to more than 40
of the larger mills and suppliers
of leather and trim. Showtime
appointments are common, but
“walk-ins” can sometimes be
accommodated.

These outlying buildings are
located just a few blocks away
on Wrenn and Hamilton Streets,
and house another 15+ suppliers.
A free shuttle ride takes you to
the buildings, and then it’s easy
to walk between the RC—shown
