An international call was sent out – via press release – inviting six members of the public to join her in a private, undocumented ritual to explore commemoration and attachment. This ignited public and media furore and interest. Complete Burning Away investigates the emotional responses associated with idolatry and critiques the role of the artist, the media and contemporary art in society. This site-specific installation includes six of the ten works. Presented by La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre, BIFEM is proud to host the vernissage of this talented, dynamic Australian artist and her important work under our special events umbrella. 2.00pm SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14 FREE EVENT P V VERNISSAGE: Complete Burning Away: (the ashes of Kurt Cobain) Featuring an encore performance of Mauricio Carrasco performing Fausto Romitelli’s Trash TV Trance La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Exhibition runs 14 September – 20 October, 2013 Image: Natascha Stellmach, Guitar used in Scream, 2010, 4-channel video, sound, 4:40 min. © the artist, Courtesy of Wagner+Partner Berlin. 8 ALISTAIR NOBLE (Canberra) HANDMADE MUSIC (Melbourne/Bendigo) 5.00pm SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14 11:30am SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14 FREE EVENT FREE EVENT PUBLIC LECTURE: ON MORTON FELDMAN TALK: HANDMADE MUSIC Auditorium, La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Bendigo Art Gallery Australian-born pianist, composer and musicologist Alistair Noble has taught at The Australian National University since 2006, where he has also served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences. His primary research area is mid-20th century music, with a special focus on the work of Morton Feldman, Stefan Wolpe and Edgard Varèse. Drawing from his new book Composing Ambiguity: The Early Music of Morton Feldman, Dr Noble will discuss the remarkable consistency of Feldman’s compositional method, tracing links in compositional language from his early works in the 1950s to his late works of the 1980s, including the Second String Quartet. Join artists Benjamin Kolaitis, Rod Cooper, Paul Fletcher & Dean Stanton for a fun, interactive and information-rich presentation exploring how musical instrumentation has been influenced by technological change, and what it means to re-design new forms of musical instruments in a world now bursting at the seams with technology, resource and waste. This event is presented by Bendigo Art Gallery in partnership with Experimenta Media Arts, to coincide with the exhibition Experimenta Speak to Me (7 September – 13 October 2013) and appears under BIFEM’s special events umbrella. Bookings required. Call 5434 6088. This free public lecture is made possible thanks to BIFEM donor Commissioner Leigh Johns.
