Preparing the electorate to vote is a key element of democracy and a primary mission
for newspapers.
At The Brunswick News, we take that
important mission very seriously and work
in our daily coverage to explore the issues
and the candidates regularly. Today, we’ve
assembled a great deal of information about
the local and regional hopefuls you’ll see
when you step into the voting booth and participate in this month’s primary elections.
In this voters guide, we’e assembled information from most of the local candidates. It
is primarily in their own words, which were
gathered through surveys sent to them by
the newspaper several weeks ago. Most candidates participated in the process and we
thank them for doing so. In some cases, campaigns did not respond to the survey request
and only limited information was available.
In all cases, The Brunswick News has made
an effort to gather biographical information
to present to our readers.

the candidates closely as early voting begins
this week, through election day and the tallying of the results on May 24. Beyond that
initial election, the newspaper will be there

be prepared for November’s general election

Why Are You Running For Ofice: I
am seeking re-election as the Solicitor of
Glynn County because the citizens believed
in my abilities two terms ago, and I have
the fervent goal to further improve the
eficiency of the Solicitor’s ofice. People
do not hear much about the ofice because
it has been non-controversial until election
time. It is important to me as a dedicated
employee and elected oficial to prove to
the people of Glynn County that this ofice
is running well and will continue to run
well and improve even more during the next
four years. I would like to continue serving
Glynn County.
The Solicitor’s ofice, a part of the State
Court system prosecutes the misdemeanor
cases. We have no administrative responsibilities outside of the Solicitor’s ofice.
The judge makes all of the decisions in
reference to the courtroom, the clerk’s
ofice prepares the court calendar and is the
keeper of the records.
The Solicitor is responsible for prosecuting the cases that should be prosecuted.
Sometimes cases are disposed of by a guilty
plea from the defendant, a negotiated plea,
bench trial or jury trial. In some instances a
irst time offender is eligible for a pre-trial
diversion in which a defendant completes
certain requirements and maintains a clean
record. There was never a pre-trial diversion
program in Glynn County until my ofice
implemented one in 2010. It is important to
me as the elected Solicitor and as a citizen
of the community to continue to make the
Solicitor’s ofice one of the most eficient,
well run ofices in the state.

am running for Solicitor because my philosophy of “Ready for Trial” will streamline the caseload and make the ofice more
eficient. Misdemeanors are considered minor crimes (although the impact on victims
and the community are not minor).
To streamline cases, I will encourage defense lawyers to propose pre-trial diversion
plans for irst offenders prior to accusation
in an effort to remove those cases from the
docket early.
I will not hide behind the rules allowing
a prosecutor to withhold discovery until 10
days before trial and instead provide discovery, following a request and motion, as soon
as practicable and no later than one week
after the iling of formal charges called an
“Accusation.”
A prosecutor must be sensitive to the
time commitment of law enforcement and
victims when it comes to court hearings.
Having represented victims, I know how
distressing court can be. That distress is
multiplied when cases are routinely continued because the parties are not prepared or
“Ready for Trial.” My commitment is to put
the work in ahead of time and strive for the
goal of resolution at a irst court appearance.
Having practiced criminal defense, I
realize police oficers often are in court
after having to be at work for an extended
overnight shift. I am committed to moving
those cases irst so that our oficers can
remain well-rested for their shifts and still
have time to spend with their families.
“Ready for Trial” not only means trying
the cases that need to be tried. It means
doing the things necessary to have an early
resolution to a case. As I get ready for trial,
I understand the strengths and weaknesses
of my case help me to frame a reasonable
pretrial resolution.

Why Are You Running For Ofice: As a
practicing attorney, I have been committed
to public service and keenly appreciate how
vitally important our Magistrate Court is to
the citizens of Glynn County. I am seeking
this judgeship to continue the good work of
this court by administering justice for all
the citizens of Glynn County in an ethical,
professional, respectful, reasoned, fair and
balanced manner. In addition to appearing
as an attorney before state, federal and appellate courts of Georgia, I have also served
as Chief of Legal Training for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and
as Glynn County Deputy Magistrate Judge
prior to being elected to the Georgia House
of Representatives, where I was a member
of the Judiciary (non-civil) Committee, as
well as Vice-Chair of the Juvenile Justice
Committee and Secretary of the Public
Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
I have also served as a member of the United States Attorney’s Committee for Project
Safe Neighborhood, adjunct instructor at
the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary, member of the
Legal Advisors Section to the International

want to continue in my efforts to ensure
Glynn County government is responsive to
the needs of the community we serve. We
have a diverse community which sees two
to three million visitors travel here annu-
ally and providing public safety, public
works and parks and recreation at a level
to satisfy the needs of everyone is one of
my ongoing concerns. Glynn County has
not seen the big bounce for our economy
everyone has been looking for and that is
a problem. So we must do all we can to
create and bring jobs to Glynn County. I
supported our investment to do just that
with the new work at our airport and the
Canal Crossing development. Specific to
District 1 I want to thank my fellow Commissioners in supporting my requests for
sidewalks, improvements to parks, road
resurfacing and restriping, drainage projects and enhanced roadside trash pick up
and mowing. Substantial change has come
to District 1, and I look forward to representing the good people of District 1
for another four years and continuing to
work with my fellow Commissioners to
make improvements, in a fiscally responsible manner, both for District 1 and all of
Glynn County.

Glynn County for three years and have
served as vice chairman and chairman
of the board. I have also chaired the finance committee for two terms and was
the vice chairman and chairman of the
JWSC.
Why Are You Running For Office: It
has been an honor to represent my community on the Board of Commissioners.
Four years ago, the Island was saturated with foreclosures, people were out of
work, and the residents of Glynn County wanted a new Commission to operate the Joint Water Sewer Commission.
We had just voted down a SPLOST and
TSPLOST leaving a $19 million/year
hole in our revenue. I wanted to help get
Glynn County going again!
Starting in January of 2013, our Commission worked with the EDA and Airport Commissions to bring about the
expansion of Gulfstream and to keep
Stambaugh Aviation from relocating. We
worked to bring a 400,000 square foot
retail center that will create 800 jobs.
Our JWSC board started fixing problems
instead of worrying about office space.
I asked for an audit of our water and
sewer systems, so our board understood
how bad our infrastructure was, and put
a replacement plan in place. With success came growth, and we had to have a
better plan for St. Simons. The Commission passed several building ordinances
to reduce density, promote greenspace,
and began to manage the growth that was
coming.
I want to continue my efforts to work
with homeowners and developers to protect the Islands, retain and replenish our
canopy, and put a comprehensive traffic
plan in place that keeps the ambiance of
the Islands, but ensures our public safety
vehicles can get where they need to go!
I want to help get SPLOST passed so
we can replace the infrastructure that
has been neglected for 10 years. Our
roads, water and sewer, storm water
drainage, tree canopy, bike paths, and
parks, must be refurbished and maintained.
I want to use my three years of dedicated experience to resolve our problems and continue to bring this community together. It is my HOME!

Why Are You Running For Ofice: Being an elected oficial has become a complex environment where many services are
involved and priorities/concerns are juggled
in many areas. Citizens depend on County
Commissioners to provide for the health,
safety, and welfare of the area in which they
live. Running for public ofice is an opportunity, and duty, to provide a refreshing and
diverse voice for the citizens of OUR community. Preserving the natural beauty in our
community is a priority along with other issues that are presently at hand. While there
are many decisions to be made by a County Commissioner, it would be an honor to
serve as the trustworthy and proactive voice
for the people of District Two.

overburdened — roads, water, and sewer capacity. Currently there appears to be
no long range planning in place to rationally control these issues. Residents have
become frustrated with the trafic congestion resulting from this rapid growth, and
are seeking someone to be their advocate.
I believe that I can ill that role and offer
fresh perspectives and a new vision which
will include implementing procedures and
controls based upon the “best practices” of
other resort based communities which have
previously confronted these issues.
Other areas have utilized “impact fees”
on new developments that place new demands and stress on existing infrastructure
and have also created “overlay districts” to
maintain the integrity of existing communities and limit the density and nature of
newer construction.
This should not be interpreted that I am
“anti-development” or “anti-growth” — I
am not! Both are vital to keep communities healthy and responsive to the future
needs of the residents. I do believe that the
high density construction that has recently
occurred on the Island is inconsistent with
what is best for us in the longer term.
I sense the frustration of the residents
of the island that I have been privileged to
meet and speak with about these concerns.
It is my belief that this sense of helplessness has given rise to the Incorporation
movement. I feel that if I can be successful
and can represent the Islands effectively
that quite possibly there would no longer
be a belief that Incorporation was the path
needed for the longterm health of the Is-

conclusion. I believe we have lost our intensity in favor of being politically correct.
Many of our problems shouldn’t take as
long to get resolved. Another year has come
and gone and beach season is upon us, yet we
still don’t have a parking solution that beneits
those who live along the beach nor one that
helps our visitor experience. After six public
meetings, the oficial proposal was rejected
primarily due to cost. I engaged contractors,
civil engineers, DNR and environmentalists
to critique my proposal that would have resulted in a solution to the drainage issues and
ineficient parking at nearly 1/3 the cost of
the original, elaborate proposal.
SSI has a trafic problem that is not going
away, even if future development is com-
pletely eliminated. The solution is going to
require the community accepting the reality
of more lanes. Doing this requires removing
trees, causing a loss in our tree canopy. I do
not support this! I would endeavor to ind alternatives, thinking outside the box, such as
what was done at Frederica Township, where
they physically moved 100 year old oaks.
The overall development on the island
needs to be brought to a point where we balance the quality of life desired, taking into
account property owner rights. These goals
are not mutually exclusive.
These examples are not all inclusive. Being
realistic and aggressive in solving our problems is the basic tenant of what I would do as
the District 2 Glynn County commissioner.

counties and 20 surnames across the State. I
lived all over Georgia as my dad, a CPA and
college professor, pursued opportunities. I
was married to a US Marine for a decade
and gave birth to ive children in as many
years; I’ve been a single mom raising my
kids for the past ten years. My kids are 12,
13, 14, 16, and 17 and my eldest graduates a
few days after the May 24th election and is
excited to be able to vote for me on the November ballot. Although my parents moved
to Tennessee several years ago (my dad
teaches for Tusculum University), we are
very close and talk daily. Their afirmation
and the encouragement of my kids had a
huge impact on my decision to run for PSC.

order to attract new businesses and people to
our area. I want to keep rates low. Many people in our county are on ixed incomes and

After serving for six years in the Georgia

My decision to run is tied to a firm belief in term limits for elected officials at
all levels of government and confidence
that I can bring a fresh perspective to
the Glynn Board of Commissioners in a
crucial election year. The Commission I
served on from 2000-2004 is often cited
as one in which all seven Commissioners
served in a cooperative, constructive way
despite differing views on many issues.
There was respect for the office and the
districts we represented and a determined
effort to find solutions to the challenges
facing the mainland and the islands in a
manner best for the entire Community. I
hope my service on that Board and my
history with the Hospital Authority from
2007-2014 and the Community Foundation speak to my belief that cooperation,

last concerted effort for Incorporation of

the Islands Planning Commission which

Why Are You Running For Ofice : I
decided to run because I have two kids in
the Glynn County School System, many
family and friends who are teachers in our
school system, and I want to give back to
this community that has given so much to
me. I am running to improve the education
of ALL children of Glynn County, boost
teacher moral, provide iscal responsibility, and to make sure the Glynn County
School System stays on the cutting edge
of technology. Every job uses technology.
Our students need to be prepared for the
real world when entering the workforce. If
elected, I will work with the board members and the superintendent to make sure
we have the best programs. Especially early intervention programs. If we can better
address the learning issues when children
are at a young age it will positively impact our children in middle school, high
school, and in their future. I will also work
with the other board members and the
superintendent to make sure we have the
best policies in place for our teachers to
be able to teach. If a student is constantly
disruptive and disrespectful in the classroom the student and their parents must be
held accountable. This will give the kids
that want to learn the best opportunity to
beneit from instructional time. I will also
work with the board to keep our legislators
aware of the need to reduce the amount of

am running for ofice because I feel led to
serve the citizens of Glynn County. I am a
native of Glynn County and attended local
schools, graduating in 1965 from Glynn
to execute the duties of coroner especially
during an ensuing criminal investigation or
when the death requires investigation due
to an unknown cause or manner of death. I
have a great deal of experience communicating with families during a time of loss and
crisis and will calmly and compassionately help them understand the circumstances
surrounding the loss of their family member

Academy. I graduated from the Kentucky
School of Mortuary Science and proudly
served my country in Vietnam. It has been
my privilege to serve as deputy coroner under Glynn County Coroner of Glynn County, my successful completion the Coroner
Training Program at the Georgia Public
Safety Training Center, and my 40+ year
career as a licensed funeral director and
embalmer. The importance of determining
the cause and manner of death is critically
important to protect public health and safety of Glynn County. I have the necessary
experience to successfully perform the duties of the Coroner’s Ofice mandated by
Georgia law. These duties include conducting an extensive investigation of sudden or
unexpected deaths, homicides, suicides,
accidental deaths and other similar cases
which may include the request for an autopsy. My tenure as deputy coroner has allowed me to develop professional relationships in our community which will allow
me to conduct an independent coroner’s investigation in cooperation with the medical
examiner, sheriff, police, district attorney’s
ofice, the child abuse protocol committee,

Although I grew up in Louisiana, I went to high school in Phoenix. That’s
where I took part in my first political campaign in 1952 as a volunteer going
door to door with flyers for my mother’s boss, a Republican businessman
running for the U.S. Senate in opposition to the powerful incumbent, a
Democrat who was the Senate majority leader.
In this snapshot, I am wearing my ROTC uniform on the day I stood up
for my candidate in a debate at my high school. When someone pointed out
that only one Republican had ever been elected to the Senate from the state
of Arizona many years earlier, I replied that although the Ike jacket I was
wearing did not have coattails, Ike himself, the GOP candidate for president,
had coattails long enough to pull my candidate into office with him.
“Vote for the person, not the party,” I said at the end of the debate, “vote
for Barry Goldwater!”
Barry Goldwater, my candidate, was elected to the Senate in 1952 because
Democrats crossed party lines to vote for the person, not the party.
Today, I am a Democrat asking Republicans to vote for me on November
8th--to vote for Puddy, not the party.
This is the image on my campaign flyer when I ran for the first
of my four terms on the town council in Durham, a small city in
New Hampshire. The caption under the photo identified me as “out,
standing in his field.”
As a town councilor, I sometimes stepped away from my seat at
the council table to stand at the podium and speak as a member
of the public when my colleagues were reluctant to discuss some
issues.
In that first campaign, running in a field of seven candidates competing for three seats, I was elected when I came in third. Three
years later, I ran in a field of five candidates for three seats and was
re-elected when I came in third. I was re-elected two more times
when I came in third in a field of three.

don’t take your vote lightly, and I hope to
continue to work effectively as your representative.
During my time in elected ofice, I have
never voted for a tax increase. Not once.
I have actively worked for fundamental
tax reform and an overhaul of our broken
tax code. I have fought against over-burdensome government regulations like the
Dodd-Frank legislation that are hurting

the federal government seeks to control

broken federal budget process to overhaul
the way Washington does business. By
switching to a two-year budget system, The
Biennial Budgeting and Appropriations
Act would force elected oficials to become
more accountable to the taxpayers. Moving
to a two-year budget cycle is a commonsense solution that would reduce spending
and increase oversight.
I voted against Obamacare, and it has
been a disaster. We must repeal this government-run healthcare plan and replace
it with a free-market solution that makes
medical care truly affordable and accessible to all Americans. On illegal immigration, my record shows my irm support
for securing our borders. We must enact a
commonsense, conservative approach to
solving the immigration crisis that keeps
our homeland safe and that doesn’t grant
amnesty.
I was among the irst to recognize the
threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq
and the Levant, known as ISIL, and I will
not stop until we get serious about eliminating those who support and carry out
radical Islamic terrorism. As a co-sponsor
of the KeystoneXL Pipeline, I am working
to ensure our nation’s energy independence
and to create jobs for Americans.
