Rightly or wrongly, we think of sheep as needing far more care and protection than, for example, cattle, as well as a tendency to wander. As the second reading says, “you had gone astray like sheep.” This might or might not be a fair assessment of actual sheep, but it is not the aspect of sheep that today’s Gospel reading focuses on. While the vulnerability of sheep to theft and harm is mentioned, it is their ability to distinguish the shepherd’s voice from the voice of strangers that Jesus emphasizes. Rather than dull creatures who will follow whomever happens to come along, sheep are presented as discerning listeners, attuned to the voice of their master, able to tell the true shepherd from the thief who “comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy.” When Christians are called on to look to Jesus as their shepherd, and thus to think of themselves as sheep, they are not being asked to succumb to an unthinking herd mentality, but to listen discerningly to the call of Christ. God wants us to come to know the voice of Jesus, so that we will not mistake it for other voices. - from “Living the Word” Parish Office email: churchoffice@stveronicassf.com ON THE HORIZON Mass Schedule Saturdays: 8:30AM & 5:00PM Sundays: 6:45, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00AM, and 12:30PM Spanish Mass: Sundays at 6:00PM Holy Days: 6:30, 8:30AM, & 6:30PM Monday - Friday: 6:30 & 8:30AM Confessions Saturdays: 4:00—5:00PM Liturgy of the Hours Monday - Friday: Morning Prayer at 6:00AM Eucharistic Adoration Monday - Friday: 9:00AM - 9:00PM May 17: Capital Campaign Spring Gala May 26: Memorial Day, Office Closed - one Mass at 8:30 a.m. June 7: Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, 6 p.m. in the Parish Center June 21: Filipino Dinner-Dance benefitting the Capital Campaign Pray for our Beloved Deceased In your prayers this week, please remember the repose of the souls of our deceased parishioners, especially: Giovanna DeMarco - died April 20, 2014 Parish Registration “Eternal Rest Grant Unto Her, O Lord . . .” Please complete and return form to the parish office, or simply drop it in the collection basket. Even though he lived over 2000 years ago and died, he rose from the dead. He lives! He is present in our life today. At Christmas time, we celebrated the Emmanuel, God-with-us. Now at Easter time, that sense of God being with us deepens, through our trials and sufferings, into an abiding conviction that the Risen Christ is always with us: “I will be with you always, even to the end of time.” I hope you are enjoying this season with family and friends. On the journey of life, we are not alone. Jesus the Risen One is walking and talking with us. Here are a few quotes to get you thinking more about Easter: “Easter is the demonstration of God that life is essentially spiritual and timeless.” -- Charles M. Crowe; “Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life.” -- Janine di Giovanni; “On Easter Day the veil between time and eternity thins to gossamer.” -- Douglas Horton; “Let every man and woman count himself immortal. Let him catch the revelation of Jesus in his resurrection. Let him say not merely, ‘Christ is risen’, but ‘I shall rise’.” -- Phillips Brooks; “Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song.” – St. John Paul II Mother’s Day: On the occasion of Mother’s Day, may I have the honor of wishing all the mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers at St. Veronica a Happy and Beautiful Mother’s Day? Thank you for being mothers. Thanks to you, we understand what it is to love, nurture, share, and be selfless. Here’s something to laugh out loud! Lessons from my mother: My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE: “If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.” My mother taught me LOGIC: “Because I said so, that's why.” My mother taught me MORE LOGIC: “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me.” My mother taught me FORESIGHT: “Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident.” My mother taught me IRONY: “Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about.” My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM: “Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!” My mother taught me about STAMINA: “You'll sit there until all that spinach is gone.” My mother taught me about WEATHER: “This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.” My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY: “If I told you once, I've told you a million times. Don't exaggerate!” My mother taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE: “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out.” My mother taught me about BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION: “Stop acting like your father!” My mother taught me about ENVY: “There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do.” My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION: “Just wait until we get home.” My mother taught me about RECEIVING: “You are going to get it when you get home!” My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE: “If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.” My mother taught me ESP: “Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you are cold?” My mother taught me HUMOUR: “When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me.” My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT: “If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up.” My mother taught me GENETICS: “You're just like your father.” My mother taught me about my ROOTS: “Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?” My mother taught me WISDOM: “When you get to be my age, you'll understand.” And my favorite: My mother taught me about JUSTICE: “One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you.” Pastoral Council: Last Monday May 05th the Pastoral Council of our parish met. Present at the meeting were: Rich Garbarino, John Wildermuth, David Collins, Karen Guglielmoni, Deacon Joe LeBlanc, Father Rafael de Avila, and myself. Three could not make it. We shared our thoughts about parish life. We talked about the Archbishop’s visit in December, the Capital Campaign, and the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. We interacted about the quality of life---social, spiritual, academic---in the parish. These three aspects cover a lot of the ministries we do in the parish. A barbecue was suggested. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for us to do a parish barbecue each year? We also talked about how we can make the spirit of Pope Francis alive in our parish. A special email address is going to be set up for anyone to pass on comments and suggestions. You may also share your thoughts about our parish life with any of the pastoral council members. Our next pastoral council meeting is going to be on September 15th. Happy Easter Season! Happy Mother’s Day!
