Registered by Australia Post - PP642521/00112 leg suffered in Round 2 and Kody Manning was also finding his way back through an injury-interrupted season. Now Nelson is out for at least two weeks after suffering a nasty injury last weekend which required surgery for a fractured nose, cheekbone and eye socket, while Drew Rohde will be monitored after suffering concussion and being taken from the ground on a stretcher. On the upside, the Falcons did a torrent of hard work to cement themselves firmly in the top four and were pleased to see club favourite Matt Guadagnin take the first steps in his comeback from a second knee reconstruction with some game time in the reserves last Saturday. With just three rounds left in the home-and-away season, Falcons coach Bill Monaghan is content with a top three finish. Like every coach, finishing in the top two was the ambition, but then reality sets in and new goals are set. » Kody Manning Two weeks ago, after the Falcons beat Perth in what Monaghan described as an ugly contest, he knew his team had to increase its intensity if it was going to get hold of reigning premiers Subiaco at Kingsway last week. They didn’t. As a result they remain third on the ladder, three wins and significant percentage behind the Lions and one behind South Fremantle. The Falcons only have two games left to play to strengthen their hold on third position, starting with seventh-placed Claremont this weekend. Then they have a bye in Round 22 ahead of a clash with Swan Districts in the final round of the regular season. “The beauty of football is that you get another opportunity to get up and play better the next week, so that’s what we’ll be aiming to do against Claremont this weekend,” Monaghan said. “We’ve beaten the Tigers twice this year but only by a total of 10 points so I don’t think the fact they are sitting seventh on the ladder is really indicative of the quality team they are. “But if we want to stay ahead of the fourth and fifth places sides (Peel and East Perth) then we need to win at least one of our last two games. “In all reality and given their draw, we aren’t likely to catch South Fremantle so we need to take care of our game and finish the season as strongly as we can.” 5 Monaghan said his boys had been “stung” against Subiaco last weekend and believe they are a better team than the 52-point loss indicated. “We need to get back to playing the style of football we played for the past 12 weeks or so,” the coach said. “Subiaco were hungrier and harder than us and we need to change that.” When you need wins, having a bye in the final three rounds of the season may not seem ideal, but Monaghan said the last thing the Falcons were going to complain about was getting a week to freshen up as they launch an attack on the finals. “We didn’t limp into the finals last year, but we were pretty fatigued,” he said. “Our last bye week last year was Round 15. So we played 11 games in a row to finish of the season having played every week of the finals as well. “While it is great to keep playing and building momentum, based on last year, I can’t complain that we have a rest week two weeks out from finals. “We won’t focus too much on the ladder from here on in. Our planning won’t change whether we are playing at home or have to travel to the likes of Fremantle Oval to take on the Bulldogs.” Three-Week Countdown To Finals Who The Finals Contenders Face SUBIACO R21 v East Perth @Medibank Stadium R22 v Peel Thunder @Bendigo Bank Stadium R23 BYE PEEL R21 BYE R22 v Subiaco @Bendigo Bank Stadium R23 v Claremont @Showground SOUTH FREMANTLE R21 v Swan Districts @Fremantle Community Bank Oval R22 v East Perth @Medibank Stadium R23 v Perth @Lathlain Park EAST PERTH R21 v Subiaco @Medibank Stadium R22 v South Fremantle @Medibank Stadium R23 v East Fremantle @ATOM Stadium WEST PERTH R21 v Claremont @HBF Arena R22 BYE R23 v Swan Districts @HBF Arena EAST FREMANTLE R21 v Perth @Lathlain Park R22 v Swan Districts @Steel Blue Oval R23 v East Perth @ATOM Stadium Sandover medallist added to Hall of Champions Sandover medallist Shane Beros will be one of three inductees added to the West Australian Amateur Football League’s Hall of Champions on Wednesday, August 31. This will be the seventh annual Hall of Champions presentation. Former West Perth champion Bill Duckworth and Michael Salmon will also be honoured. The purpose of the Hall of Champions is to recognise players, coaches, umpires, officials and teams who have achieved outstanding success and/or made a significant contribution in the WAAFL. Beros (Mt Lawley Amateur Football Club), Duckworth (North Beach Amateur Football Club) and Salmon (University Amateur Football Club) Other notable former WAFL players who are already members of this illustrious club include: • Bernie Naylor who was inducted as a High Achiever. One of WA’s greatest full forwards, Naylor played for CBC Old Boys in 1940 and after the end of World War II went on to play in six South Fremantle premiership teams. • Keith Slater, who was one of WA’s best sportsmen. He started his senior football career in 1954 with the Midland Junction Amateurs before being recruited by Swan Districts the following season. Slater played 166 games for Swan Districts and won the club’s fairest and best in 1956, 1957 and 1960. » Chris Keunen 6 by Sean Cowan Collectables During 2016, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home. I have spent plenty of time over the past few years trying to document all the WA football periodicals that have been produced. The reason for this is twofold. First, as a historian with a special interest in WA footy, I want them to be available to researchers. Second, as a collector, I want a copy of each of them in my own collection. So, given my particular interest in this area of collecting, it’s no real surprise that I’ve now got most of those that are known to have been produced. There are a couple of exceptions, of course. I am still looking for a heap of WA Footballer and Football Budget editions, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, but also some editions right through to the late 1960s. I’m also looking for editions of a magazine called “Goal Post”, which was only produced in 1913. Then, there’s the very memorable Westside Football newspaper, which ran from 19791997. I have opted not to keep these, simply because of the storage space required. Thankfully, they have all been scanned and are now available on disc. So, with a near-complete collection of WA periodicals in hand, it always comes as something of a shock when something new turns up. And, of course, when I say “something new”, it invariably means “something old, but not previously documented”. This is exactly what happened this week when I finally got a chance to go through a small suitcase full of newspapers and cuttings that was given to me by Budget reader Terry some months back. Among the stash was a couple of editions of a newspaper called “Footy Week”. Now, Victorians would be well acquainted with Footy Week, which ran from 1965 to 1973 and was produced by the great footy media entrepreneur and former umpire Harry Beitzel. Beitzel was perhaps most famous for his focus on the use of statistics in football reporting, which was certainly a feature of Footy Week. Having seen a few of these before, I wasn’t particularly excited at its discovery… until I realised the stories were all about the WAFL. Yep, that’s right, in 1968 there was a WA edition of Harry Beitzel’s Footy Week, which was free and had a stated circulation of 35,000. In the two editions I found in Terry’s suitcase, those who were named as having written articles were all football figures, including Clive Lewington, Kevin McGill, Kevin Murray, Jim Spencer and Beitzel himself. The paper was printed by News Express Publishers in Leederville and one outlet at which they were available was supermarket chain Tom The Cheap. Unfortunately, that’s about all I know, other than the fact that there were 26 editions in 1968 and at least three editions in 1969. I suspect that might have been the end of it. Does anyone know for sure? And has anyone got a copy lying around? Thankfully, the State Library does have a few of these on microfilm, so I’ll see if I can find out a bit more on my next trip into town. But I’d like to find some more of them in hard copy. Next on the list of discoveries for this week was an unusual card that Budget reader Rob sent in. Rob described it as a “postcard”, but it clearly wasn’t meant to be posted as there’s nowhere to write on it and nowhere to put a stamp. It’s obviously some sort of advertising card, made to promote Mildara Wines. The players featured are South Fremantle goalkicking hero Bernie Naylor and tough Perth ruckman Merv McIntosh. The information on the card allows us to narrow the production date to sometime between 1947 and 1954. What I found interesting was the way in which Naylor and McIntosh were depicted. Both look as though they were wearing make-up, though I can’t imagine too many rough-and-tumble footballers from the 1950s being game to wear lippy, even for a (presumably) paid photo shoot. Last but not least for this week, I was recently asked about the value of newspaper wrap-arounds and front covers from the 1980s. As colour printing became a bit cheaper in this era, newspapers increasingly looked to mark special events with coverage on the front and back page (or they added an extra sheet that came before the front cover). These were often heavily pictorial in nature. The West Australian, The Daily News and The Sunday Times all did this for special WAFL events in the early 1980s – usually the launch of the season or the grand final. To be honest, I can’t imagine them being worth a hell of a lot. But those that are attractive and celebrate a team’s premiership might sell for $10-$20 to a fanatical supporter of that club. Check out some of those in my collection in the pictures on this page. Just when East Perth looked worthy of being considered a premiership threat the Royals took a giant step backwards with the loss to Peel last round. Significantly the performances of the Thunder’s Fremantle-listed talent was a key to the victory. The disappointing efforts of several West Coast squad members was also a key difference. While Jon Giles strives to offer a target in attack and when on the ball and Tom Lamb’s move from defence into attack has been positive, East Perth struggle to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The Royals haven’t kicked 10 goals of more in a match since round 15. Such a low return won’t win too many finals. And it doesn’t loom as much of a threat for this round’s opponent who just happens to be on track for a third consecutive premiership. While Lewis Jetta got plenty of the ball against Peel he must be more productive with his chances. At WAFL level his speed should be a major asset for the Royals. Paddy Brophy has returned to defence in recent matches and his negating qualities will be crucial to East Perth’s hopes of limiting Subiaco’s production. There was one positive for the Royals last round. The debut of draft fancy Sam Powell-Pepper was a highlight. Subiaco go into the clash with plenty of confidence. The last time the Lions ran into their Medibank Stadium co-tenant was in round 11 and they waked away with a 99-point win. Liam Ryan kicked five goals that day and he has since proven that he can be a consistently dangerous forward line weapon for Jarrad Schofield. With Chris Phelan, Adam Cockie, Brett Robinson and Leigh Kitchin firing Subiaco has a plethora of midfield options that can quickly tear apart an opposition. That is why some resistance from East Perth’s top league talent is imperative to its bid to stay in the top five. SOUTH FREMANTLE v SWAN DISTRICTS There was an ominous sign in South Fremantle’s win over Perth in Carnarvon last round. The Bulldogs’ second-half onslaught in which they kicked 13 goals to three showed how dangerous Todd Curley’s unit can be when Haiden Schloithe, Ryan Cook, Steven Verrier, Mason Shaw and Dylan Main combined so well. Shaw’s five-goal haul was encouraging for the Bulldogs and put extra onus on the Swan Districts match committee to counter his potential this round. Swans coach Greg Harding has been working hard to eradicate his team’s skill errors and needs Matt Riggio, Todd Banfield and Justin Simpson to lead the way. PERTH v EAST FREMANTLE The bubble has burst at Lathlain Park. After a mid-season run of victories that excited the competition Perth has lost its past three matches and dropped back to eighth place on the premiership table. The Demons need Julian Jacobs, Dene White, Brett Wolfenden and Liam McKenna to rediscover the unity that helped their team climb from the doldrums. The goal is much simpler for East Fremantle. It is a case of just win. The four points could result in the Sharks leaping back into the five if Subiaco does as expected and defeats East Perth. » Tom Lamb (EP) WEST PERTH v CLAREMONT For a renowned defender Andrew Strijk has become a key attacking weapon for West Perth this season. Strijk’s four-goal haul against Subiaco last round was encouraging. Only problem for the Falcons was that they could only add one more for the match. Yet if Strijk, Michael Lourey and Max Duffy could combine West Perth has the makings of a very potent forward zone. With a bye next week a win is that much more important to the Falcons. Beau Maister, Tom Shanahan and Matt Davies gave Claremont a much-needed boost of self-belief in the win over Swan Districts last round. Last Sunday’s Cable Division grand final between Darling Range Sports College and Comet Bay College was the culmination of the season of senior schoolboy’s football that involved 92 teams and over 2300 students participating across three divisions in a competition that represents a significant partnership between the West Australian Football Commission, School Sport WA and REDIMED. In tough conditions Darling Range Sports College won their third consecutive Cable Division grand final, proving too strong for Comet Bay College, running out victors by 33 points. In the Jakovich Division, La Salle College tasted their first grand final success since 2009, defeating first-time finalists Cecil Andrews SHS by 57 points. After a week-long battle against Bunbury SHS, Albany SHS, Great Southern Grammar and WACoA Cunderdin at Senior High Schools Country Week, a well-drilled Newton Moore SHS overpowered a gallant Bunbury CGS to claim back-to-back Walker Division titles by 51 points. West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) Manager School and Junior Competitions Darren Davis said the WAFC appreciated the support received from the volunteers and staff who play a role in the delivery of school football. “School sport is integral to the health of the game in WA and in the education and development of all students,” he said. “We are fortunate to have wonderful program partners in REDIMED and School Sport WA and we thank them for their continued support of school football.” The following players were awarded the match balls for being their school’s best player » Walker Division champions Newton Moore SHS in the grand final: Walker Division: Jacob Pickett (Newton Moore) & Luke Reilly (Bunbury CGS) Jakovich Division: Liam McPherson (La Salle) & Shawn Cole (Cecil Andrews) Cable Division: Trent Simpson (Darling Range) & Zac Moody (Comet Bay) Bill Walker Division grand final Friday, July 1 at UWA Sports Park Newton Moore SHS............................. 11.2 (68) Bunbury CGS.............................................2.5 (17) Glen Jakovich Division grand final Wednesday, July 31 at Steel Blue Oval La Salle College..................................... 11.4 (70) Cecil Andrews SHS..................................1.7 (13) Barry Cable Division grand final Sunday, August 1 at Domain Stadium Darling Range Sports College.......... 4.10 (34) Comet Bay College.................................... 0.1 (1) Leading goalkicker award LEADING GOAL KICKERS AFTER ROUND 20 44 43 39 32 » Cable Division winners Darling Range Sports College 31 30 27 26 25 22 20 19 17 » LaSalle College celebrate winning the Jakovich Division 16 15 Hamish Shepheard (Subiaco) Ben Saunders (South Fremantle) Mason Shaw (South Fremantle) Brett Peake (East Fremantle), Beau Maister (Claremont) Michael Lourey (West Perth) Darcy Cameron (Claremont) Liam Ryan (Subiaco) Max Duffy (West Perth) Blaine Johnson (South Fremantle) Ben Sokol (Subiaco), Jack Bradshaw (Claremont) Jack Richardson (Claremont), Ricky Cary (Swan Districts), George Hampson (East Fremantle), Matthew Watson (East Fremantle), Andrew Strijk (West Perth), Jonathan Giles (East Perth) Tom Lamb (East Perth) Ian Richardson (Claremont), Clancy Wheeler (Subiaco) Haiden Schloithe (South Fremantle) Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls (East Perth) 2016 Colts Coaches award Round 20 votes South Fremantle v Perth 5. He is one of the longest serving umpires in the South West alongside local umpire coach Kevin Nettleton, who amassed 682 games as a field umpire. Crowe’s record includes: • 13 Landmark A Section grand finals • 13 SWFL league grand finals (including the drawn grand final in 2012) • 8 GNFL league grand finals (Geraldton) • 6 Country State matches • 1 National A Section grand final (Bunbury 2004) Tim Priest: How your goal umpiring journey start? Jason Crowe: I started umpiring in August 1994 (Round 17) as I felt I could do better than some of the umpires of the time. I phoned the local umpires coach on a Thursday night and was umpiring three days later! I was living in Collie, but my first game was Busselton v Carey Park, in Busselton. Apart from an overseas holiday for four weeks, I have umpired almost every week ever since. Tim Priest: Tell me a little about your recent trip to SA, representing WA as a goal umpire in the WACFL v their South Australian country counterparts? Jason Crowe: It was an amazing experience to be umpiring on Adelaide Oval. I had to concentrate very hard, as it was easy to be distracted by the surroundings and it was a fast match. The ground was pristine, like walking on carpet, not a hint of mud, which I am more than accustomed to in the SWFL. Being with the WA Country Footy team was also a unique experience. We were paid a surprise visit by Kevin Sheedy on the morning of the match at breakfast, which was also a highlight. Tim Priest: The match was a curtain-raiser to the Adelaide Crows v Essendon game. I believe you reacquainted with one of your former umpire teammates from your days of goal umpiring in the WAFL? Jason Crowe: Yes, I happened to catch up with WA-based AFL field umpire Luke Farmer. Luke and I used to umpire a lot in the WAFL in the late 90s, along with Dean Margetts and Brett Rosebury. I hadn’t seen Luke since I left the WAFL in 2000. We caught up in the umpires race after the SA v WA match and it was like old times, actually I couldn’t shut him up. It was really great to catch up. Tim Priest: What motivates you to continue to wave the flags? Jason Crowe: After 22 years I am getting towards the end of my career, but I will keep going for a few more years while I still enjoy the game and enjoy umpiring. Tim Priest: Outside interests and job? Jason Crowe: Outside of football I have a massive passion for Motorsport, particularly Speedway, where I am the Full Time Media Manager for Speedway Sedans Australia. In summer I am flying all over Australia covering major events, where I also do the commentary. So it works in well with football as they don’t really clash, one being in summer and the other in winter. As a kid, I’d often be out the front of my ng Tuart Hill house kicking between two trees. WAFC » South West Goal Umpire Jason Crowe (centre) catches up with AFL umpires Jacob Mollison and Luke Farmer. Tim Priest: Tell me about your days on the WAFL goal umpire panel. Jason Crowe: I umpired 100 games exactly in the WAFL including eight league games before moving with work in 2001, where I was a Bank Manager. I transferred to Geraldton, which ended my WAFL career. I umpired the 1998 WAFL colts grand final and the second semi-final and preliminary final in the reserves in 1999. Tim Priest: Any other interesting points about your umpiring journey? Jason Crowe: A mate of mine with nothing better to do estimates I have waved the flags 54,000 times across 1,200 games. Tim Priest: Thanks Jason, and all the best for the remainder of the season in the South West. Jason Crowe: Thanks Tim, yes our SWFL local finals are just weeks away. We expect it to be a good finals series. Can’t wait! With just one round to play, Wembley are dominating the B Grade competition, sitting on 14 wins and three losses for the year. Wembley also have the best percentage in B Grade with 144.14% which was helped by a 107-point victory over ninth-placed Melville last weekend. Wembley finished second on the ladder last year behind this year’s A Grade side Scarborough before making the preliminary final. They were knocked out of the premiership race after a 12-point loss to Hamersley Carine who went on to win the grand final. Now sitting three games clear of the rest of the competition with Whitford, Collegians and Kingsway all on 11 wins and six losses with only one round of football to play, Wembley cannot be knocked off the top position and will begin their finals campaign with a week’s break before the semi-finals on Saturday, August 27. The last time Wembley was in A Grade was back in 2010 when they were elevated after finishing on top of the ladder and making the B Grade grand final in 2009. Their time in A Grade was short as they spent just one season at the top before being relegated back at the end of 2010. Wembley face off against eighth-placed Wanneroo this weekend at Pat Goodridge Reserve. The finals series is set to kick off for grades B and below on Saturday, August 20. The Bulls are now a great chance of snatching a top two finish in the Great Southern Football League. They were well-served by John Lee and Wayne Bolton (four goals) while Mathew Smith and Luke Cameron were named best for North Albany. Railways kept its season alive with a surprise three-point win over second-placed Royals and, with two rounds left, will be hoping to sneak into fourth spot on the ladder. Railways’ best were Craig Frost, Zane Marwick and Logan Stubber with five goals, while Rhys Jones and Nathan Powell were good for the Royals. Denmark-Walpole had a convincing 125-point win over Albany with eight goals from Shayne Zanetti putting him on the best player list, while Dion Woods also showed good form in the wet and windy Information supplied by Trevor Kelly from WA Footy Forum conditions. Since the beginning of the 1970 WAFL season there have been 4162 league debutants at an average of 93 new players per season. The WAFL player database is missing a date of birth for only 23 of these players but the birth place and junior/previous club is not recorded for a further 240 players. Each week the Budget will list the playing records of eight players for whom information is sought to improve the database records. These include: YouScan.me Graeme Lawrence BRADLY (East Perth 1966, 11 games) Neil Francis BUSCOMBE (Swan Districts 1968, 4 games) Brian Stanley DOERING (West Perth 1977-1978, 5 games) Michael Joseph JACKSON (Subiaco 1977-1978, 6 games) Michael Alexander McLENNAN (East Fremantle 1963, 1 game) Glenn Leslie SPENCER (East Perth 1987, 3 games) Graham Evered WILCOX (South Fremantle 1967-1969, 24 games) Andrew John WILSON (Perth 1979-1980, 9 games) Any information that could help establish contact with, or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson (via e mail gwardelljohnson@ wafc.com.au or message on 9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission. 26 Results & Ladders Results Round 20, 2016 LEAGUE CLAREMONT.......................................... 2.0 6.5 9.10 14.15 (99) SWAN DISTRICTS................................... 0.5 1.7 4.7 6.9 (45) GOALS: CL - Maister 5; Langdon, Manuel, J.Waterman, Davies, Lim, Hardisty, Cameron, Bradshaw, Speed.
