What is Your Dream for Your Future?
Are you a dedicated student? Have you overcome considerable obstacles? Is the cost of going to college a financial strain
on your family? No matter what your talents, abilities, or circumstances, your Community Foundation wants to help.
The Community Foundation of NCW is home to a large number of funds that award scholarships to help North Central
Washington students pursue their dreams and goals at colleges, universities and trade or technical schools. These
scholarship funds were established by caring, generous donors who have a passion to provide higher education
opportunities through financial assistance to worthy students.
Our Application Process
You will be applying for our scholarships online through Common Grant Application. The program has many features
for students, including the ability to save a draft of an application and return to it later. You can also enter your general
information once, and easily apply for multiple scholarships without having to re-enter the same information multiple
times. The online system also provides an easy, electronic process for requesting your Letters of Recommendation. Step
by step instructions are available in this booklet and at www.cfncw.org/scholarships. We also encourage you to watch
the tutorial video before starting an application to better understand the online system requirements.
Applying for Multiple Scholarships
You may apply for as many scholarships as you like, as long as you meet each scholarship’s criteria. Common Grant
Application allows you to enter your general information once, and re-use it to apply for other foundation scholarships.
Some scholarships require supplemental material in addition to the general application questions.
Application Review
Every application is reviewed by members of the Community Foundation’s volunteer Scholarship Selection Committee.
The application is reviewed first for eligibility as the Community Foundation must adhere to the specific eligibility
criteria established by scholarship fund donors. After review, scholarship applications are evaluated on an objective and
competitive basis, considering academic and nonacademic factors such as financial need, leadership, community service,
and special circumstances.
Determining Financial Need
Because financial need is a factor in most of our scholarships, the Community Foundation looked for an equitable way
to access need among applicants with a variety of family financial situations. Applicants are required to provide the
Estimated Expected Family Contribution number calculated by completing the FAFSA or the online FAFSA4caster (with
exception of HB1079 applicants). Please read the “Financial Need & Expected Family Contribution” section of this
Scholarship Guide (page 3) for more details on the Statement of Financial Need.
Award Announcement and Payment
Students will be notified of award status by May 1st. If you are awarded, you will be given a packet with redemption
instructions that we ask you to promptly return to the office. Once we receive the signatures and documentation
required from the packet, we schedule payment directly to the institution.

Financial Need & Expected Family Contribution
When donors establish scholarship funds at the Foundation, they tell us the criteria that is most important to them. The
selection committees then search for applicants that most closely match that criteria. The majority of the donors choose
to make financial need one of the criteria. Our selection committees require a consistent method of evaluating financial
information among applicants. The Foundation will accept the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number from the
FAFSA or the FAFSA4Caster Student Aid Report.
What is Expected Family Contribution (EFC)?
Your EFC is an index number that college financial aid staff use to determine how much financial aid you would receive if
you were to attend their school. The information you report on your FAFSA is used to calculate your EFC.
The EFC is calculated according to a formula established by law. Your family’s taxed and untaxed income, assets, and
benefits (such as unemployment or Social Security) all could be considered in the formula. Also considered are your
family size and the number of family members who will attend college or career school during the year. The EFC Formula
Guide, available at http://studentaid.ed.gov/resources#efc, shows exactly how an EFC is calculated.
What is the FAFSA?
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the form used to file for federal student aid, available at
www.studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa. You will need your parent’s and/or your most recently filed tax records from the year
prior to when you will start school. FAFSA forms may be accessed and completed earlier, but cannot be submitted
until after January 1. Submit as early in January as possible to allow enough time to process so you do not miss your
scholarship application deadline. After you submit the FAFSA, you should receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) within 3
days to 3 weeks.
What is the FAFSA4caster?
The FAFSA4caster is an online tool to help college-bound students and families anticipate college costs before officially
applying for federal student aid. It provides an estimate of federal student aid eligibility by instantly calculating an
estimate of the Expected Family Contribution - the indicator used to estimate financial need.
Some students aren’t able to provide the EFC number because of the federal eligibility requirements for filing FAFSA. HB
1079 students are still eligible to apply for Community Foundation scholarships. Students who qualify for HB 1079 will
not need to complete the FAFSA or FAFSA4caster. HB 1079 students will enter “1079” under “Other Family Financial
Information” on the financial portion of the application, and “0” in the fields that require an EFC value.
How do I submit my EFC information to my application?
You will be asked to input your EFC multiple times on the scholarship application. You will also be asked to attach a copy
of the page that verifies the Estimated Family Contribution from either the FAFSA or the FAFSA4caster.

Application Overview
The Community Foundation of North Central Washington uses an online scholarship application process provided by
Common Grant Application (CGA). Scholarship applications will be available at www.cfncw.org on December 15.
If you need access to a computer to work on your application or a scanner to create PDFs, the Community Foundation

BEFORE ACCESSING THE APPLICATION
•Review the Scholarship Guide carefully to find every scholarship for which you are eligible to apply. A list sorted
by school and/or affiliation is provided in this guide but consider the list only as a starting point. Each scholarship
has specific criteria that you must review to determine if you are a match.
•Highlight or write down the names of the scholarships for which you plan to apply.
•PLAN AHEAD. The deadline for the majority of the scholarships is February 15th (be sure to check the deadlines
printed in this Scholarship Guide for variations).
•Complete the FAFSA or FAFSA4caster if required.
•Know the timeline of asking for Supporting Materials (FAFSA, Transcript, and Letters of Recommendation). More
detail provided below and on the application.
REQUIRED SUPPORTING MATERIALS
1. Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from FAFSA or FAFSA4caster (not required for HB1079 students – see detailed
information on the application)
•FAFSA: You will need your parent’s and/or your most recently filed tax records. Access the FAFSA form at
www.studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa. FAFSA forms may be accessed and completed earlier, but can’t be submitted until
after January 1. Complete the FAFSA as early in January as possible to allow for processing and not risk missing
the scholarship deadline. After you file, you should receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) within three days to
three weeks. Note: The FAFSA Summary Report you receive immediately upon submitting your FAFSA is NOT
your SAR.
•FAFSA4caster: You can get an estimate of your EFC by using the FAFSA4caster at www.studentaid.ed.gov/fafsa/
estimate. Remember, though, that it’s just an estimate and that you will still need to file the FAFSA if you want to
apply for Federal Student Aid.
•IMPORTANT: Create a PDF document only of the page from the SAR that shows the EFC. File size restrictions
apply, so please do not upload the entire SAR.
2. Transcript from your school Registrar
•High School Students: Your transcript must include your senior year, Fall Semester grades.
•Running Start Students: Submit your college transcript as well as your high school transcript.
•IMPORTANT: Transcripts often are double-sided. Create a PDF document of both sides.
3. Letters of Recommendation
•Most scholarships require two recommendations but some require three and specify who they should be from.
Follow the instructions on the application carefully.
•Ask early. Ask in person. Once you have the recommender’s agreement to provide you with a recommendation,
verify the email address they want to use. You will be required to submit their name and email in the application.
•The recommenders will receive an email generated by CGA when you submit your application. The email will
provide instructions on how to submit their letters electronically.

Application Instructions
ONLINE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. You will need to create a login and password to apply through Common Grant Application. Once you register with
Common Grant Application (CGA) your login and password will exist for future use. Choose a login and password you
will remember and write it down.
•Visit www.cfncw.org/scholarships and click on the link for New Users. Once you reach the registration page, be
sure to select “Individual” when asked, and to enter “Individual” under the “Organization” field.
•Once you complete the registration page, you will be asked to accept the “Terms of Agreement”, then you will
have an option to Continue to Application or Continue to Dashboard. Click “Continue to Application”.
•You will now see the entire list of scholarships available. All of the criteria are listed with each scholarship, which
corresponds directly with this Scholarship Guide. You can either scroll the list or enter the name of a scholarship
in the search box.
•To print out a sample copy of the application or watch a brief tutorial on YouTube describing how to fill out and
submit your application, select the appropriate options from the “Select an Action” drop down menu. When you
are ready to start, click ‘Start a Draft Application’. If there is no “Start a Draft App” button, the scholarship has not
yet opened.
2. Complete the Basic Application.
•Answer every question in the sections that pertain to you. You don’t have to complete the application in one
sitting. You can start and stop an application as often as needed before the deadline if it has not been submitted.
Everything you've entered will be there when you resume the application.
•Anytime you need to login to CGA, you will need to do so through the www.cfncw.org/scholarships website
under “Returning User”.
•The essay fields have character limitations. While CGA provides a character count, you may consider constructing
your essays in Word or some other program for character counting and pasting into the essay responses.
•If you are applying for more than one scholarship, the information you enter will be automatically entered on
subsequent applications. You will be able to edit/customize each application before you submit it. You can work
on only one application at a time. You must submit a fully completed scholarship application before starting
another.
•Upload the Supporting Materials (EFC verification from FAFSA or FAFSA4caster and your transcript) under the
Attachments tab. Detailed instructions are on the Attachments page of the application to help.
•Complete the Certification Page.
3. Preview the application.
•Review the application carefully for accuracy and completeness. ONCE YOU SUBMIT THE APPLICATION, YOU
CAN NO LONGER MAKE CHANGES.
•if you’ve missed a required field or document, CGA will not allow you to submit your application. CGA will display
a pop-up message indicating which information is missing.
4. Submit the application.
•You will receive an email confirmation that the application has been successfully submitted.
•CGA will send emails to the recommenders you have provided as soon as you submit your application. We
encourage you to submit your application(s) early enough to give the recommenders ample time to complete
and submit your letters of recommendation before the deadline.
5. You should login and review the status often to see if the Letters of Recommendation have been submitted. Your
application is not complete and will not be accepted unless the required Letters of Recommendation are included.
Follow-up with the recommenders as appropriate.
