The football feud between the 7th and
8th floors of Salmon Grove Chambers
resumed on 1 March 1996.
However, it seems that the 7th Floor
are intending to steal a march on the
8th Floor as they resumed their train
ing sessions earlier. Perhaps last year's
lesson was too much for the 8th Floor!
Come on guys, let's see you working
those legs in the gym, your arms had
enough exercise during the Christmas
vacation!
Pietermaritzburg
The Pietermaritzburg Bar held two
successful social events of note dur
ing November and December 1995,
the first being a formal members only
dinner at the Royal Hotel, Pieter
maritzburg. In accordance with tra
dition, the formality was soon diluted
by alcohol, resulting in an evening of
fun and entertainment.
The second social event was the an
nual cricket match at the Fleur de Lys
Club, Hilton, between Dickson's 11
and Southwood's 11. Southwood's 11
got "carrots", with Dickson's 11 win
ning by fifteen (15) runs. The lamb
on the spit was a great success and
once again many brain cells were se
verely damaged.

Appointments
T
WO members from our local Bar

The number of members at the Bar

rolled.

The 9th Annual Bar Dinner was held at
the King William's Town Club on 16
February 1996. It was proved a most en
joyable evening and was well-attended

Chetty SC and Pillay SC have acting

just announced his permanent appoint

honour of Judge Bernard Ngoepe who
was recently elevated to the Transvaal
Bench and Chris de Jager SC who had
at that stage been appointed as a mem
ber of the Human Rights Commission
but has since been appointed to the

Lidmaatskap en pupille
In Maart 1996 was daar 'n rekord
inname van 45 nuwe pupille.
Die ledetal staan tans op 263 maar
sal waarskynlik aansienlik styg, afhan
opgeneem.

Jaarlikse Sportdag tussen
die Pretoriase
advokate en prokureurs
Hierdie jaarlikse byeenkoms het op 29
Maart 1996 by die Harlequin Klub
plaasgevind. Daar is meegeding in
ktieket, sokker, damessokker, muurbal,
landloop en swem. Ongelukkig is die
tenniswedstryd afgelas, klaarblyklik
weens 'n gebrek aan belangstelling. Die
tennis was nog altyd een van die
hoogtepunte van hierdie byeenkoms en
die hoop word uitgespreek dat dit
volgende jaar weer op die program sal
wees.
Die prokureurs het as oorwinnaars
uit die stryd getree nadat hulle die
krieket, tennis en landloop gewen het.
Die advokate het die muurbal gewen en
die swem by verstek gewen. Die dames
sokker het gelykop geeindig met twee
doele elk.
At the end of last term this occasion
was attended by the Honourable P J van
der WaIt DJP and a number of his breth
ren from the Transvaal Bench.
The meeting was also addressed by
the new chairman, Gerrit Grobler Se.
Jaarlikse Investee
maatskappyaflos
In recent years, an effort has been
made to hold a cocktail party for mem
bers and visiting dignitaries towards
the end of each term.
Die Pretoriase Balie het op 21 April
1996 weer aan die Investec Maat
skappyaflos deelgeneem. Drie spanne
het in die regskategorie deelgeneem,
onder andere, vir die eerste keer vyf
damesadvokate.
Die wisseltrofee vir die Transvaalse
Regbank, die "Fleet ofVoet"-beker vir
die eerste advokatespan uit Pretoria of
Johannesburg by die eindpunt, is weer

Arbitration
The arbitration facility (to be known
as the Arbitration Foundation of South
Africa) and the Johannesburg consul
tation facility at 4 Protea Place,
Sandton, are reaching completion.
The building has three floors of which
the third is taken up by arbitration
rooms and participants' chambers.
The second and third floors are taken
up (with the exception of two large ar
bitration rooms) by the Johannesburg
Bar.
There are nine arbitration rooms.
Each arbitration room is served by two
dedicated conference rooms. Three ar
bitration rooms are large (they can
comfortably double as lecture rooms);
three medium sized (± 50 m"); and
three modest (± 35 m").
The first floor houses seven arbitra
tion rooms with their conference rooms,
the secretariat, library, canteen, and
participants' chambers. The partici
pants, effectively equity partners in the
venture, include the Pretoria Bar,
SACOB, and various leading attorneys'
firms.
Although the building is geared for
arbitrations, it provides an ideal facil
ity (and is being marketed as such) for
conferences, consultations, meetings
and the like. Members from all bars
are encouraged to make use of the fa
cility.

'n paar termyne die burgemeester van
Kimberley. Hy het egter nie net sy
kantoor ontruim en ons verlaat nie, maar
ook sy sekretaresse, Helena van Niekerk,
saam met horn geneem. Helena het vir
21 jaar by die Balie gewerk en was ma
vir talle pupille wat verwese en ver
dwaald by die Balie aangesluit het.
Ook Albe Bester, wat sedert 1993
verbonde was aan die Noord-Kaapse
Balie , het ons verlaat en groener
weivelde in Edinburgh, Skotland, gaan
soek. Sy beoog om haar leerklerkskap
by 'n prokureursfirma aldaar te gaan
doen.
Rugbylosie
losie by Hoffe Park, Griekwaland-Wes
Balie sy betrokkenheid by die gemeen
skap ten toon gestel.
Ons wil graag glo dat ons onder
steuning 'n bydrae gelewer het tot
Griekwas se suksesse die afgelope tyd.
As ander Balies nie ons voorbeeld sou
volg nie, salons begrip daarvoor he,
