COLORADO &
SOUTHERN CABOOSE 10505
Photos from the book “Basalt” by Bennett A. Bramson, Arcadia
Publishing, Images of America
Colorado & Southern Railway caboose 10505 was built
by American Car & Foundry at St. Charles, Missouri, in
August 1906 as C&S (and was the second caboose to
carry this number, the first 206 having been destroyed
in a wreck on March 31, 1901). The car was built to a
“Common Standard”, design developed in 1905 for
use by the C&S and its two Texas affiliates, the Fort
Worth & Denver City and the Trinity & Brazos Valley. It
was a typical design of the early 20th Century, having
no end platforms and instead being accessed by a
door on each side. Nineteen identical cabooses of
this design were built for the C&S in 1906-07 by AC&F,
along with 26 for the Fort Worth and Denver City and
another 26 for the Trinity & Brazos Valley. In 1912, the
C&S renumbered all its cabooses, and the 206 became
C&S 10505. On December 5 of that same year, the
newly renumbered caboose was involved in a freight
train derailment in the southern Colorado coalfields
at Lynn (between Walsenburg and Trinidad) and was
severely damaged. It was completely rebuilt in the
Denver shops of the C&S, emerging in April 1913
looking like new. Side-door cabooses such as the 10505
were quite dangerous for train crewmen, who regularly
got on and off the cars while they were moving. With
only the vertical steps below the side doors, it was
easy to slip and fall underneath the moving car. Many
railroad conductors and brakemen were killed or lost
limbs in such accidents. Consequently, side-door
cabooses were
outlawed in
every state but
Texas by 1930
(they continued
to be legal in
Texas into the
1950s), and
railroads began
rebuilding
the side-door
4
cars with end platforms and steps much like those on
passenger cars. C&S 10505 was rebuilt in the Denver
shops in July 1925, losing its side doors in favor of
end platforms and taking on its present appearance.
The car continued to be used on C&S freight trains
in Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico, operating
uneventfully for years. During World War II, traffic
volumes increased dramatically on all U.S. railroads,
and they were hard pressed to provide sufficient
equipment to handle all the business. The depression
of the 1930s had taken a toll on the railroads, and they
had let the condition of their equipment decline and
had not purchased new equipment. Thus, the World
War II traffic boom caught the railroads unprepared,
and they scrambled to upgrade their equipment.
C&S caboose 10505 is a typical example. Built with
a wooden under frame and arch bar trucks (which
were made of steel straps bolted together), the car
was in poor shape by the 1940s. In October 1944,
it was rebuilt in the Denver shops, receiving a new
steel under frame and cast steel trucks, along with a
general overhaul that made the car suitable for many
more years of service. From the time it was built in
1906 until the end of the 1950s, the 206-10505 was
painted boxcar or mineral red, the standard color of
railroad freight equipment. In 1958, the Burlington
Route railroads (control of the C&S had been acquired
by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad in
1908) adopted a new color for freight cars, and soon
thereafter the 10505 was repainted into the bright new
Chinese red paint scheme. In the late 1960s, as newer,
all-steel cabooses were acquired by the C&S, the 10505
was sent to Leadville, where it spent its final years
working the isolated 14-mile branch between Leadville
and the Climax molybdenum mine. The car was retired
soon after the 1970 merger that created the Northern
Railroad.

THE TALE OF TWO JUNCTIONS

Basalt is the result of a merger of two communities:
Frying Pan Junction and Aspen Junction. Frying Pan
Junction was established in 1882 and then the tent
town of Aspen Junction came along around 1885.
The name Frying Pan has several stories of origin. One
that the trout were so plentiful they jumped from the
river right into your frying pan. Another story is that
some prospectors had hung a frying pan up in a tree
where they made their camp. This was after they had
moved camp twice to get away from the Ute Indians as
these Utes kept camping where the prospectors were
panning. They had moved once again to get away from
the Indians by going over a mountain side only to find
another Indian camp on the other side. At this sight one
of the prospectors exclaimed “We have gone out of the
Frying Pan and into the fire”. Frying Pan Junction was
mainly a tent village although a few cabins were built.
There was a tent store and several tent saloons. Though
squatters came as early as 1882, the first settlement town,
Frying Pan, was built primarily to house and entertain
the men working in the nearby charcoal ovens.
When people heard that a railRd. was coming to Frying Pan
Junction they quickly moved to the other side of the river to
become part of what would be known as Aspen Junction.
The Colorado Midland RailRd. came to Basalt in 1887.
Aspen Junction was a railRd. camp with a boarding house,
a store, a restaurant and fifteen saloons. According to a
letter written by Emma Davis Slehi of Emma the saloons
dwindled down to three because there were not enough
customers. The coming of the railRd. into Aspen Junction
also helped making the charcoal easier to transport. Prior to
the railRd. the charcoal was loaded onto the backs of mules
and horses to be hauled up to Aspen. The post office at
Aspen Junction was established February 13, 1890 but the
name did not change to Basalt until June 19, 1895. This was
done to avoid confusion with the mail in Grand Junction.
The two Junctions merged and the Town of
Basalt was officially incorporated on October 8,
1901. This name was taken from the basaltic rock
formation of Black Mountain (now known as Basalt
Mountain) located to the north of the Town.

NOT MUCH MORE
THAN A WIDE SPOT
IN THE ROAD:
EMMA, COLORADO
Article by Warren Gredig and Tim Rice
MRS. MARGARET DARIEN STARTED HER TEACHING CAREER IN A LITTLE ONE-ROOM
SCHOOLHOUSE AT EMMA, COLORADO. IN 1927 EMMA CONSISTED OF A STORE, A POST
OFFICE, A TRAIN STATION, A SCHOOLHOUSE AND SEVERAL HOMES.
It was named Emma because Emma Garrison
was the first postmistress there. Today
Emma consists of two brick buildings, an old
foundation of the train station, a schoolhouse,
out house and the old homesites.
Mrs. Darrien came to the Emma area when
she was four years old. In 1927 she started her
teaching career in the schoolhouse at Emma
where she earned $75.00 a month. She taught
there for one year and then went to El Jebel
and taught for six more years. In back of the
schoolhouse at Emma were a coal shed and two outhouses.
There were two holes in each outhouse, one for the big kids
and one for the little kids.
The school was green and white with a steeple and bell.
There was a farm type fence with a metal gate to keep
livestock out. In order to get into the school yard there was
a set of steps with four or five steps on each side of the
fence and a boardwalk up to the school. Getting to school
was done by walking, riding horseback and wagon or sled
depending on the season. One group of children was lucky
enough to have a farm truck, and rode to school.
The school had two rooms, an outer room and the
main classroom. In the outer room they put their coats,
overshoes, supplies, water container and tin cups. Mrs.
Darien carried water from Basalt in a cream can. In the main
classroom, they had four aisles of desks, a stage with Mrs.
Darien’s desk on it, and an old pot bellied stove. All of the
desks were screwed down to the floor so that they wouldn’t
move around.
6
When Mrs. Darien came to school, she had to start her own
fire. At night, before she left for home, she had to put the
fire out or bank it. To bank the fire she threw a couple of
buckets of coal in the stove and closed all the draughts.
When she came in the next morning, she threw some wood
on the fire, shook down the ashes, opened the draughts,
and the fire took off. The school house was so poorly
insulated that it would take all day for it to warm up if she
did not bank the fire at night. The school day started at 9:00
a.m. and ended at 4:00 p.m. They had two recesses and
one hour free at noon. They got a week off at Christmas, no
break for Easter and if someone died they were allowed a
couple of hours off in the afternoon to attend the funeral.
In the school they had one big teaching aid used by the
teacher, similar to a large textbook. The kids who did not
have paper to write on, used a slate. The kids, rather than
staying inside during recess and at noon, played games
outside all year round. They played games like “pom-pompull-away”, “hide and seek”, “kick the can”, and in the
winter they played “fox and geese” and “deer and dog”.
They had two or three large parties a year and several
smaller birthday parties a year.
At Emma in 1927, they had a stationmaster’s house, where
the man in charge of the station lived, and a station which
was maintained by the Denver and Rio Grande Western
RailRd.; two brick buildings which consisted of a store,
warehouse, living quarters and a livery stable out back.
These were owned and operated by a family by the name
of Oulds. Besides these buildings there were about eight to
ten other houses in the two mile-radius around Emma.
In 2010 Pitkin County Open Space and Trails received a
grant from the Colorado Historical Society to repair the
brick buildings. The Emma School house is still used today
for various functions.

OUTSIDE WATER
CONSERVATION
TIPS
AERATE YOUR LAWN ANNUALLY
How?
DOES YOUR LAWN REALLY NEED WATER?
Hire a lawn company OR Ask a friend with a truck and rent
an aerator. Get a few friends together and share the cost of
machinery, and aerate all your lawns.
How do I determine?
ENCOURAGE DEEP ROOT GROWTH
Walk across your lawn and look at your
footsteps. Are they still there?
Your lawn needs water!
How?
Put your lawn on a “water” diet by gradually reducing the
frequency and amount of water you give your grass. The
roots will grow deeper, searching for moisture. Now you can
water every 3 or 4 days instead of every other day!
Push a screwdriver into the lawn and look how easily it goes
down. Is it hard to push in? Your lawn needs water!
DID YOU KNOW???
One of the largest water wasters is an automatic sprinkling system operating when it is raining or just after a rain.
Consider installing a rain sensor on your automatic system. They are inexpensive and also saves you water which saves you
even more MONEY!
WATERING WITH LARGE DROPS REDUCES WASTEFUL EVAPORATION.

Town of Basalt’s
WATER-WISE
LANDSCAPES
By Lisa DiNardo, Town Horticulturist/Certified Arborist RM-7161A
As you casually walk by the pleasantly textured and
colorful water-wise perennial gardens around Town
Hall, the Recycling Center or the historic downtown
roundabout, keep in mind that Basalt’s numerous
gardens and community forest have a lot of forethought
that goes into each design. Each site was intentionally
crafted with a diverse, low water and low maintenance
plant palette that thrives in our mountain climate whose
annual rainfall is 10-20 inches.
Before a new garden or tree is planted, site characteristics
are assessed and include the sun/shade patterns on the
landscape, slope considerations and drainage, the focus
then turns to building soil health which is foundation of a
prosperous landscape. Soils are amended with an organic
compost to improve its physical properties, such as water
retention, permeability, water infiltration, drainage, aeration
and structure. The goal is to provide a better environment
for roots.
An efficient irrigation system is an important component of
the landscape and should be carefully considered. Consult
with local irrigation specialists to design a system that is
appropriate for the plant’s needs. Similarly, in choosing
the right plant for the right place, it’s a given that plants
should thrive in the existing conditions of the landscape,
whether it’s situated in full sun, partial shade or in a riparian
area on the Roaring Fork River. Always be guided by the
horticultural principal of “Right Plant, Right Place.”
Newly installed plants require a moderate amount of
attention until they are established. Plants will tell you if
they are adjusting well to their new environment, but be
observant and do the necessary tweaking of the irrigation
if necessary. Using bark mulch in the gardens and around
trees is one of the simplest and most beneficial practices
you can do. It conserves moisture, reducing the need
for frequent watering’s, it maintains a more even soil
temperature, it suppresses weed growth and it adds an
appealing finished look to the landscape. The Town uses
sifted spruce bark mulch on the gardens and trees and as
a result soils are beautifully bioactive and the plants are
thriving.
Creating desirable, thriving and sustainable gardens and
landscapes that provide a continual season of bloom can
be an exciting adventure with a good solid plan. A reliable
source of on-line research, information and expertise on
horticultural and arboricultural information is The Colorado
State University Extension website at ext.colostate.edu.

Basalt’s Great Outdoors
By Jeff Anderson, Bristlecone Mountain Sports
WHEN IN BASALT, GET OUTSIDE AND ENJOY YOURSELF! WHETHER YOU’RE LOOKING
FOR SOME RELAXING FUN OR AN ADRENALINE SPIKED ADVENTURE THERE ARE A
PLETHORA OF OUTDOOR PURSUITS AT YOUR DISPOSAL.
Roaring Fork Conservancy
For the sun
and surf crowd,
rent a stand up
paddleboard and
head up to Ruedi
Reservoir for a
relaxing cruise,
and once you’ve
got your sea
legs step up to
some rapid riding
on the Roaring
Fork. The water
fun doesn’t stop
there; hit up some bigger water in a raft or kayak for
a thrill that you won’t soon forget. The angler can
enjoy world class fly fishing year round on Basalt’s two
Gold Medal waters, the Frying Pan River or Roaring
Fork River, either with a guide or in solitude, and the
summer season just expands the possibilities.
If terra firma is your playground, Basalt is your
gateway to the stunning wilderness or a quick day
hike. With easy access to both, whether you’ve got
a couple of hours or a couple of weeks, you’ve got
a great leaping off point. For the more vertically
inclined the Frying Pan and Lime Creek areas offer
some phenomenal climbing routes and puzzles.
Any cyclist will fall in love with the miles of trails and
Rd.s out of Basalt. Whether it’s a picnic cruise on the
Rio Grand bike trail or your next century ride, the
tarmac rolls however you want. And if tarmac doesn’t
do it for you, explore the miles of single-track nearby
for a wilder ride.
The sportsman will love our local shooting range
facility, and come Fall Basalt is an ideal home base for
your hunting adventures.
As the snow falls it’s time to break out or rent some
gear for an exhilarating skate, an in track cruise, a
backcountry tour, or some powder turns.
Basalt offers all this and more,
so dream it and get out there!

Basalt: Trout Fishing Capital of North America
By Warwick Mobray, Frying Pan Anglers
Basalt
is the Trout
Fishing Capital of North
America. Maybe that
seems a bold statement.
But which other Town in
North America has one
of the great Western
Tailwaters - the Frying Pan
River - flowing through it,
has year round fishing with
plenty of public access,
and in the middle of
Basalt has the confluence
of 2 gold medal waters
– the Frying Pan and
the Roaring Fork?
Just to underline this claim, this year in October 2013, Basalt
and surrounding areas will host the Finals of the North American
Fly fishing championship from which the team will be chosen
to go to the World Fly Fishing Championships in 2014.
With the Frying Pan, Roaring Fork, and Colorado Rivers, Basalt
offers in excess of 70 miles of excellent accessible water to
enjoy. The Frying Pan is a wading river while the Roaring
Fork can be floated from up near Aspen almost 40 miles to
Glenwood. The Colorado can be floated from the Grizzly put
in all the way to Rifle and Silt. There is excellent public access
on all rivers and details are available at all local fly shops.
As Will Pulliam the manager of Frying Pan Anglers describes it,
“the other excellent aspect of the area is the ability to fish all year
round.” The lower Frying Pan is fed from Ruedi Dam, 13 miles
from Basalt. Ruedi is a bottom release dam which means that
the water released in winter is close to 40 degrees and therefore
it will maintain an active midge biomass during winter enabling
the fish to feed even in the coldest conditions. That is the reason
there is excellent dry fly fishing throughout the winter in that area.
In addition, during summer, the bottom releases ensure that the
water remains very cold slowing down the rate of maturity of
mayflies such as the green drakes. As a consequence where a
drake hatch will only last a short time in a freestone river, Basalt
has drakes hatching on the Frying Pan from late July through late
September providing the great drake hatch experience for which
the Frying Pan is so famous. The other relatively unique feature is
the release from the dam of the Mysis shrimp which is a powerful
protein source bringing the fish fast growth and large size. The
Mysis was introduced when the dam was built as a food source to
support an unsuccessful experiment of introduced Kokanee salmon
in Ruedi. The experiment failed but the Mysis lives on providing
a food source which has produced a lot of massive trout at the
base of the dam outflow, commonly known as the “toilet bowl”.
The fishing conditions are so good that there is little
difficulty for even a beginner to be able to catch trout with
the assistance of a guide. Basalt has 2 full service fly fishing
shops which provide guiding services. In addition Frying
Pan Anglers conducts Kids Camps during the year with the
goal of introducing youth to Fly Fishing. There is plenty of
lodging in the area including several motels in Basalt. Frying
Pan Anglers also maintains a number of cabins halfway up
the Frying Pan which enable guests the ability to stay on the
Frying Pan and fish private water at the height of the season.
30
Basalt provides an excellent opportunity for anyone who has never
tried fly fishing to be introduced to it in ideal conditions. It also
provides the opportunity for fishermen to be able to enjoy their
sport year round unlike other areas which have seasonal closures
or where the conditions don’t support year round fishing.

Health - Your most valuable asset
By Dr. Tom Lankering
HEALTH IS NOT JUST THE ABSENCE OF PAIN OR
SYMPTOMS. IT IS THE FULL EXPRESSION OF YOUR
LIFE ENERGY. IT IS A BALANCE OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL,
EMOTIONAL, AND SPIRITUAL WELL-BEING. OBTAINING
AND MAINTAINING OPTIMAL HEALTH IS BECOMING MORE
CHALLENGING IN THE COMPLEX WORLD WE LIVE IN.
Stress has long been recognized as a reason why our health becomes
compromised. In our world, stress has become even more complicated.
Gravity was the constant stress that we were all under. Now, there are
six main categories of stress. Think of a triangle. The points are physical,
biochemical, and nutritional stress. The sides are toxins, electromagnetic
stress, and infections and allergies. Our bodies are constantly being
bombarded by these stressors. When the body can no longer cope with
these stressors the body is not at ease. The body is dealing with disease.
Awareness and responsibility are the first steps to better health. Health is not a place, it is a journey. Getting
healthy is a contact sport. You need to get in involved. Once you start feeling better, having more energy, and
having less aches and pains, you will find that taking the efforts to be healthy will be well worth it.
From the homeopathic and natural practices to more conventional Western medicinal approaches, Basalt is
home to some of the finest Physicians in the Valley.

Living Principles
TO STAY ENERGETIC, STRONG, AND HAPPY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO LIVE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE--NO MATTER WHAT
TYPE OF LIFE YOU LEAD, OR WHAT TYPE OF CAREER YOU MAY HAVE, OR WHAT AGE YOU ARE. FOCUS ON
THESE TEN SUGGESTIONS TO ACHIEVE YOUR GREATEST HEALTH BENEFITS. By Dr. Bruce Bowen, Sopris Medical
EAT NATURAL, AS OPPOSED
TO FAST FOODS OR HIGHLY
PROCESSED FOOD.
Eliminate or reduce the
consumption of refined processed
foods, such as sugary snacks
or sodas—foods that are full of
calories, but void of nutrition. For
example, select whole grain breads
instead of white, select the whole
orange instead of frozen canned
orange juice, select an apple
instead of a donut.
EXERCISE.
What specific type of exercise you
do is not as important, as long as
you do it. Do something you enjoy.
Play ball with your children. Go
skiing, hiking, or swimming. Enjoy
dancing. Take up a self-defense
class. Go to the gym and do weight
lifting, cardio workouts, or get
expert guidance from a personal
trainer. These are all excellent ways
to improve your fitness. What’s
important is that you move your
body. The goal is 6 - 7 hours a week.
34
EMPHASIZE PLANT-BASED
FOOD. FOCUS ON FRUITS,
VEGETABLES, LEGUMES,
BEANS, NUTS, SEEDS AND
WHOLE GRAINS.
CONSUME HEALTHY FATS.
GET OUTDOORS AND PLAY.
INTERACT WITH FRIENDS
AND FAMILY, not just via the
SLEEP SEVEN HOURS A
NIGHT, AT LEAST.
LIMIT TELEVISION AND
COMPUTER GAMES TO 10
HOURS A WEEK OR LESS.
SEE YOUR HEALTH CARE
PROFESSIONAL.
Try to eat more fresh foods. Get a
rainbow of colors for a wide variety
of nutrients. Non plant-based foods
should be consumed in moderation,
covering only ¼ or less of your
plate.
Get some sunshine, get some fresh
air, laugh and have fun with your
children, friends and family outside.
Here in Basalt, we have access
to some of the most spectacular
outdoor activities. Take advantage
of them. It will positively affect your
mood, your health, and your overall
well-being.
Get your healthy fats from nuts,
seeds, avocados, or plant-based
oils, such as canola oil or olive oil.
Minimize your consumption of
highly-processed oils, saturated
fats (animal fats and butter) and
trans-fats (man-made fats such as
margarine, shortening, or fast-foods
that have been cooked in these).
Choose lean meats and low-fat
dairy.
computer, but with real human
contact face-to-face. Enjoy your
friends and family, and the company
you share with them.
This is especially important for
children and teens.
CHOOSE NUTRIENT DENSE FOODS, which have a wide
spectrum of natural vitamins,
minerals, phyto-nutrients, and antioxidants. In grocery stores, look for
ANDI (Aggregate Nutrient Dense
Index) or NuVal (Nutritional Value)
numbers to help guide you on
healthier choices.
If you have trouble sleeping, drink
less caffeine in the afternoon, sleep
in a cooler room, and try to remove
or reduce those things that disturb
your sleep.
Take control of your own health with
the above suggestions. When you
need help with a more serious issue
or for a wellness check, call your
doctor for an appointment.

Basalt has many opportunities for fun.
In order to have fun it is important to stay safe!
Be Proactive.
Be Prepared.
Be Safe.
HIGH ALTITUDE TIPS:
Basalt is at about 6,600 feet above sea level. Visitors may
experience some minor side effects due to Basalt’s high
elevation. Here are a few tips and suggestions for staying
healthy and enjoying your stay in the mountains. When you
first arrive acclimatize yourself for a period of time prior to
beginning strenuous activities. Light activity is better for this
process then sleeping because respiration rates decrease
when we are asleep. At high elevations, the atmosphere is
thinner; there is less oxygen and less humidity available to
you than at sea level.
Symptoms to be aware of:
1. Headache, which is usually throbbing. It gets worse during the night and when you wake up.
2. Loss of appetite.
3. Feeling sick to your stomach.
4. Feeling weak and lazy.
5. Waking up during the night and not sleeping well.
6. Feeling dizzy.
Your symptoms may be mild to severe. They may not start
until a day after you have been at a high altitude. Many
people say altitude sickness feels like having a hangover.
Listen to your body; these symptoms are a warning to
decrease your activity level and increase your water intake.
If symptoms persist go to the Emergency Department at
Aspen Valley Hospital in Aspen or Valley View in Glenwood
Springs. Another option is Aspen Valley Hospital After Hours
Clinic on Cody Lane in Basalt, from 5PM-10:30 PM, M-F and
8AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday.
Stay Warm
There’s an old saying here in Colorado, “If you don’t like
the weather, wait ten minutes...it’s sure to change.” At
this elevation, the weather can change quickly. Winter or
summer, prolonged exposure to the elements can cause
serious problems. Children are not always aware that they
are becoming too cold. Parents should watch for red noses
and red ears. If this occurs, bring the child in from the cold,
remove wet clothes and warm the child and affected areas
immediately. Moderation is the key... take frequent breaks
from the cold or heat. The temperature can drop drastically
when the sun sets. Be prepared for this and always have
layers of clothing available.
Be proactive. Be Prepared. Even if the forecast calls for
warm weather, it is important to have warm clothing in case
there is a sudden change in temperature. It is wise to layer
your clothes, no matter what the season. A t-shirt, wool
sweater, nylon windbreaker with a hood and a bottle of water
are basic equipment for just about any summer activity.
Winter sports enthusiasts should wear warm, waterproof
gloves, hat, and socks, plenty of warm, water-resistant
clothing and goggles or sunglasses with adequate UV
protection.
Be aware of conditions. A stiff wind can blow the powder
snow, exposing an unexpected patch of ice that can send
you sailing. Hikers and mountain bikers should keep in
mind that creek crossings during spring runoff may become
impassable due to high water levels. There are a variety of
altitudes and terrains in Basalt and the surrounding areas.
Just because it is clear in town, does not mean it will be on
your intended route. Make contact with a local authority to
best inform yourself what to expect for the day!
36
SUN SAFETY:
It’s cool in the mountains but don’t be fooled. Sunburns
at altitude can be more severe for a number of reasons,
namely there is less atmosphere to absorb the ultraviolet
rays. Sunburns at altitude have a longer delay in being
recognized, meaning that by the time you realize you are
getting burnt, the sun has likely already done its damage.
Protect yourself using sun protective clothing, a brimmed
hat, sunglasses (remember, if your skin burns more easily at
high altitudes, your eyes will too), ample sunscreen on those
parts of your skin that will be exposed – face, neck, top of
ears, hands – and wear SPF lip balm. Even on cloudy days!
RIVER SAFETY:
Some tips to help you stay safe on the river:
1. Tell someone where you are going, when you expect to return, and where to call if you don’t.
2. Be sure your white water skills and experience are equal to the river and the conditions.
3. NEVER BOAT OR FISH ALONE.
4. Wear a properly fitted Personal Flotation Device (PFD) at all times when you are in or near the river.
5. Know your limits of swimmers rescue and self rescue on white water rivers. Know when and how to swim for an eddy.
6. Be prepared for extremes in weather, especially cold.
Know about the dangers of hypothermia and how to deal
with it. Know early signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and dehydration in hot weather.
7. Reduce threat of injury by wearing protective footwear and proper clothing.
8. Carry a first aid kit and know how to use it. Learn or review medical aid responsibilities and CPR.
9. Wear wading shoes or boot-foot waders with soles that grip the type of bottom you’re on. Rubber cleat soles are best for sand, fine gravel, soft silt or mud. Felt soles are
best for bottoms made up of irregular-size rocks and algae-covered bedrock. Cleated or studded felt soles work well in swift water with a slick rock bottom.
SNOW AND ICE SAFETY:
Tread carefully in snow and ice. The streets and sidewalks
can be deceptively slick during the winter months! Footwear
with adequate traction is key to keeping you on your feet!
If you find yourself in a situation where the snow is packed
down and you can’t get traction, try walking on unpacked
snow, as it may be easier to get grip. When driving in snow
the most important thing to remember is to slow down. Most
accidents are caused by driving too fast for conditions. Ice
grippers can be a nice addition to increase traction.
LIVING WITH WILDLIFE:
Keep trash cleaned up, do not allow food to sit outside
unattended. If you are camping, keep food stored in closed
containers and sleep well away from it. Keep pets close by,
and on a leash to avoid wandering. It is always a good idea
to make noise while enjoying the outdoors, to alert any
animals of your presence, if they are not already aware.
Talk about wildlife and safety with your children. Keep a
close eye and do not allow them to play outside after dusk
or before dawn without close supervision. There is additional
information about specific wildlife found in the area in the
Basalt Chamber of Commerce or the local Ranger office in
Carbondale.
