Acquired by Warner Lambert in 1997, the site engaged in an expansion programme as part of the wider Lipitor manufacturing expansion programme. In 2000 Warner Lambert merged with Pfizer and all intermediates and final API for Lipitor are now supplied from this site. With Lipitor coming off patent the site has developed a competitiveness strategy in order to compete with the generic market. Safety is a key pillar of this strategy, along with Quality, Cost and Supply. In 2011 the total number of colleagues onsite was 140 with an average age profile of 42. The average service profile is 13 years with 73% of the site having a 3rd Level Education. The site is situated on 19 acres and contains the following manufacturing areas: OP 1: High Volume, general purpose organic synthesis facility OP 2: Dedicated API Drying and Milling facility. OP 3: High containment manufacturing facility. (Pfizer’s only OEB 5 facility) The site has special expertise in Large Volume APIs, OEB 5 Containment and Small Volume Potent API’s. Pfizer Little Island is committed to an ongoing improvements programme at the site and the continuous improvement principles of the Responsible Care initiative. 4 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Pfizer Little Island has developed a comprehensive and collaborative Health and Safety Program in the form of “Your Safety Counts”. It is more than a communications programme, it is a tangible and measurable campaign that has delivered significant results year on year onsite. “Your Safety Counts” embodies the sites commitment to becoming an Injury and Incident free environment through the creation of an interdependent health and safety culture. “Your Safety Counts” engages colleagues from all levels of the organization and is a great source of information, knowledge sharing, motivation and above all a platform to recognise the health and safety results achieved and vision for the future. “Your Safety Counts” places colleagues at the core of all activity and is collaborative and innovative in its approach. By placing colleagues at the epicenter of the campaign there is a true sense of ownership, accountability and ultimately achievement. It’s for colleagues – By Colleagues. The overarching goal of the strategy is to become an Incident and injury free site. Central to the development, execution and success of the Health and Safety Strategy are a number of key pillars. They are built on a very strong foundation of the robust systems onsite namely; Accident & incident reporting, Risk Assessments, Hazaop, Permit to Work, Emergency Response and Occupational Health. The collective force of the initiatives above ensures continuous improvement with respect to Health and Safety across the sites. “Your Safety Counts” is a replicable and transferable strategy. Some of the key principles of the strategy have already been shared with the wider Pfizer Ireland and Global Networks. “Your Safety Counts” is an award winning campaign marked by the “Safety & Sustainability Star” award in early 2012. This recognition has instilled a further sense of pride and achievement in all stakeholders involved and serves as a motivating factor for future progress. 5 A manifestation of “Your Safety Counts” was the creation of Health & Safety DVD produced by the Little Island site in 2011 centred on the 9 Commitments To Safety. Supported by Seamus Fives (Site Lead), international colleagues Kirsten Lund Jurgensen (VP of the Primary Care and Oncology Operating Unit) and Anthony Madaluna (President of Pfizer Global Supply, PGS) the DVD highlighted the importance of Personal Responsibility both in the workplace and at home. BBS or Behavioral Based Safety Programme is an observation-based process to encourage people to think about safety when performing a task, and apply any learning’s. BBS is a step along the way towards an injury free workplace. It examines at-risk behaviours which are responsible for 96% of all injuries. To date 357 BBS observations have been completed onsite. Operational Excellence is about ensuring a holistic and structured approach to the selection of priority projects for safety onsite. The Hoshin X-matrix was identified as the most suitable tool to fulfill this function. The X-matrix starts with the safety vision, determining: 1. 2. 3. 4. STRATEGY - what areas the site will focus on PROJECTS - what key projects will be required to be implemented SYSTEM METRICS - the key metrics to indicate if projects are working and finally RESULTS - The key target results that will indicate if strategies are delivered or not The fourth and final pillar is an effective communications and awareness programme that utilizes tactical, viral and guerrilla marketing to support the various programmes onsite. In addition to workrelated topics a firm focus is placed on Health, Safety and Wellbeing in the home . Significant progress has been made to date in terms of reduction in the sites TIR rate, reduction in incidents onsite and a move towards an incident and injury free environment. Key results achieved include: Significant TIR reduction from 2006-2010 (63%) 57 colleagues certified in BBS 156 colleagues trained in BBS 357 BBS observations completed 1071 positive engagements with safety onsite “My Safety Counts” DVD distributed to 200+ colleagues, homes and stakeholders Health & Safety Week - engaging colleagues, suppliers and internal/ external stakeholders “Your Safety Counts” is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to Health and Safety. It illustrates the business value of responsible care, along with robust initiatives for achieving health and Safety Excellence in the workplace. “Your Safety Counts” is a replicable and transferrable strategy. Colleague engagement is an integral part. By focusing on the work environment through BBS, Operational Excellence and the 9 Commitments to Safety colleagues have a shared responsibility for Health and Safety onsite. This is supported by an extensive EHS communications and awareness programme that reinforces the importance of a safe 6 working environment while simultaneously encouraging safety at home. The inclusion of the home aspect ensures family and friends become a key driver for influencing change. Pfizer Little Island is striving to become incident and injury free site and is truly on a journey to a safer site. 7 SECTION 1: SETTING THE SCENE FOR “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” 1.1 BRINGING TO LIFE A ROBUST HEALTH & SAFETY PROGRAMME Pfizer Little Island has developed a comprehensive and collaborative Health and Safety Program in the form of “Your Safety Counts”. It is more than a communications programme, it is a tangible and measurable campaign that has delivered significant results year on year onsite. “Your Safety Counts” embodies the sites commitment to becoming an Injury and Incident free environment through the creation of an interdependent health and safety culture. “Your Safety Counts” is the brainchild of the Health & Safety team and Safety Reps on-site. In late 2010, early 2011 the Safety team set about formalizing their strategy onsite and looking at innovative and engaging ways of communicating the progress made in Health & Safety onsite. “Your Safety Counts” is anchored on four key areas: BBS – Behavioural Based Safety, 9 Commitments to Safety, Operational Excellence and EHS Communications and Awareness. Colleagues are central to the development and execution of all aspects, which is represented through the visual below. 8 1.2 THE CHALLENGE – KEY OBJECTIVES: Prior to the roll out of “Your Safety Counts” the team invested time in defining exactly what was expected of the campaign. The challenge for the Health & Safety team and safety reps was to develop a creative, tangible and above all sustainable campaign that: Would help reduce the TIR onsite Would help to achieve Health and Safety targets set within the Global Network Would actively engage colleagues across all areas of the organization Would improve colleagues relationship with safety onsite Would foster an interdependent culture onsite Would improve the competitive positioning of the site within the Irish and Global Network Ultimately would help realize the sites vision of becoming an Incident and Injury free site 1.3 “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” – CREATING A UNIQUE BRAND “Your Safety Counts” is the umbrella under which all Health and Safety Programmes operate onsite. Central to the development of any marketing and communications strategy is a strong brand. “Your Safety Counts” has succeeded in creating something unique, recognizable, and above all creating a campaign that influences real change. Colleagues are the foundation of the campaign, as illustrated in the previous graphic, and the featuring of “Your” in the brand is further testament to this. It highlights accountability, responsibility and the importance of the individual. “Counts” is about making it matter; it’s about colleague’s understanding that they are important, valuable and above all that their interests are at the heart of all activity. The logo is a visual representation of the sites commitment, “to establish a strong EHS programme that puts the health, safety and wellbeing of colleagues as the focal point”. For consistency, the logo appears on all Health and Safety related material and communications across the site. Localization is essential. This logo was designed and developed for the Pfizer Little Island site specifically, adding to the authenticity of the strategy. 9 SECTION 2: STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT – “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” 2.1 HEALTH & SAFETY COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY “Your Safety Counts” is a comprehensive strategy and a real departure from historic campaigns run onsite in the past. The Health and Safety team recognized the importance of achieving targets and objectives as set out in section 1.2. Campaign objectives were clearly defined and formed the foundation of the marketing activity, work-streams and ethos upon which “Your Safety Counts” was built. The Health & Safety team embraced the opportunity to get insight and support from a range of internal and external stakeholders. From the outset it was agreed that communications would be tailored to enable effective communication and collaboration throughout the journey. Industry and International best practice was a source of inspiration and knowledge in activating programmes in the early stages of “Your Safety Counts”. Insight provided from colleagues in Pfizer Grangecastle, Newbridge, Loughbeg API, Shanbally Bio Plant and Puurs was all carefully reviewed, and where appropriate, localized for the Little Island site. From the outset four key pillars have formed “Your Safety Counts”: They are built on a very strong foundation of the robust systems onsite namely; Accident & incident reporting, Risk Assessments, Hazaop, Permit to Work, Emergency Response and Occupational Health. Section 2.2 examines each pillar in greater detail giving you a deeper understanding of the work-stream and highlighting examples of activation and implementation onsite. 10 11 2.2 “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” – CORE ELEMENTS Four core elements combine to deliver this strategy. 2.2.1 BBS BBS or Behavioral Based Safety Programme is an observationbased process to encourage people to think about safety when performing a task, and apply any learning’s. BBS is a step along the way towards an injury free workplace. It examines at-risk behaviours which are responsible for 96% of all injuries. To date 357 BBS observations have been completed onsite. BBS is based on the principles of behavioural psychology, also known as behaviour modification. It is a technique for modifying behaviour of workers to make them work safely. It uses behaviours as a performance measure, removes barriers and motivates safe behaviour. BBS is a voluntary programme facilitated through consent based observations. It forces the “observer” and “observee” to actively think about safety and the task in hand. The site adopted the S.T.E.P.S approach for the BBS programme, Stop o Think Evaluate Proceed o Safely Pfizer Little Island have set clear goals for the execution and future of the BBS programme onsite, namely: • • • • Get all colleagues onsite trained up on BBS Ensure each department onsite achieve the required number of observations Ensure observations are reviewed and all trends are communicated to the site in a timely manner Consideration for accreditation through from RoSPA 12 2.2.2 The 9 Commitments To Safety The 9 Commitments To Safety are fundamental to “Your Safety Counts”. They focus on the importance of the individual and the personal responsibility each colleague has onsite with respect to Health & Safety. It’s about working safe, to return home safe every day to family, friends and loved ones. It’s a belief that “All Injuries & Incidents are preventable”. Ongoing marketing of the 9 Commitments to safety is two-fold. Tactical marketing techniques are adopted in the form of side wide posters supported by strategic positioned “jacksmails” in the male and female bathrooms onsite. On a monthly basis, each poster site is updated with a new commitment, which has been designed specifically for the Little Island site. The graphics utilized are cartoon based, light-hearted, eye-catching but above all feature hard hitting safety messages to colleagues. In 2011, the Safety Team and Safety Reps commissioned the production of a 12 minute DVD entitled “My Safety Counts”. Shot onsite, it featured six colleagues representing Labs, Admin, Warehouse, Production and EHS Operations. Each colleague spoke about personal responsibility, the actions they take to ensure they work safe each day and most poignantly they shared the motivating factors for working safe each day. Family being a key driver in most cases. A key message, reinforced in unison by kids of colleagues, was “Your Safety Counts To Us”. It serves as a reminder to anyone viewing the DVD that Safety is an integral part of day to day life both in the workplace and at home. The “My Safety Counts” production is unique to the Pfizer Little Island site, but the impact of the message has been acknowledged internationally by Kirsten Lund Jurgensen (Senior VP of Oncology Operating Unit) and Anthony Madaluna (President of Pfizer Global Supply, PGS) 13 2.2.3 Operational Excellence – X-Matrix Operational Excellence is about ensuring a holistic and structured approach to the selection of priority projects for safety onsite. Safety is a key pillar of the Little Island Site Strategy. With that in mind, the Hoshin X Matirx was adopted enabling the site to select, monitor and measure key projects onsite from a Health & Safety perspective. The Hoshin X-matrix was identified as the most suitable tool to fulfill this function and has seen the progression of a number of key projects in 2011. The X-matrix starts with the safety vision, determining: 1. STRATEGY - what areas the site will focus on 2. PROJECTS - what key projects will be required to be implemented 3. SYSTEM METRICS - the key metrics to indicate if projects are working and finally 4. RESULTS - The key target results that will indicate if strategies are delivered or not The main benefit of “Safety X-Matrix” platform is that it provides confidence that the correct projects are being focused on to deliver each element of the site strategy. Inherent in the X-Matrix is the Little Island Safety Vision outlining “We will deliver Safety Excellence at Little Island by ensuring everyone works together to achieve and injury free site and maintain strong regulatory compliance” Visibility, accountability and tracking are critical. To that end a number of boards have been set up to assist with tracking, progress and communication of achievements/milestones. For consistency and clarity the X-Matrix Board, Project Tracking Board and Site Metrics board are all positioned in the same room onsite. 1. X-Matrix Board: The X-Matrix Board is a comprehensive display board identifying the vision, strategies, projects, metrics and results. Numerical values or strengths are placed against the links/relationships between each resulting in the identification of priority projects. 14 2. Project Tracking Board: Project Sponsors onsite attend a fortnightly meeting at the board to track projects against milestone place, to discuss and agree specific project actions and review and discuss actions from the previous meeting. Attendance sheets are posted to the board and are available for all colleagues to view. 3. Site Metrics Board: The Site Metrics Board was borne through the need to clearly track the key metrics so the site performance could be reviewed, measured and assessed by the wider management group. This section serves to give you a deeper understanding of the purpose and role the X-Matrix plays onsite. Individual projects, progress and results of same are explored in Section 3 of this submission where the role and value becomes even more apparent. 2.2.4 EHS Communications & Marketing The fourth and final pillar is an effective communications and awareness programme. “Your Safety Counts” marries best practice EHS and marketing principles to deliver a sustainable and effective Health and Safety Programme onsite. Tactical, Guerrilla and Viral marketing methods are all deployed onsite to deliver “Your Safety Counts”. It goes beyond compliance, something that is reinforced by the supporting communication and EHS awareness campaigns. In addition to work-related topics a firm focus is placed on Health, Safety and Wellbeing in the home. For the purpose of this submission we are concentrating on three Communications and awareness campaigns run onsite over the past year. Each with their own objectives, messaging and outcome. 15 1. Safety Road Show – Health & Safety Week The EHS awareness team put together an extensive week-long activation plan to promote four topics/themes onsite. Topics were selected based on data relating to near miss reporting. PPE Nitrogen Chemical Exposure and Leaks Ergonomics Four individual stands were designed and displayed in high traffic areas of the site. Safety reps took responsibility for each and allocated 1 hour per day to man the stand. Demonstrations, discussions and videos ensured that colleagues who engaged were fully informed. In addition, a series of competitions and quizzes ran throughout the week serving as a motivating and rewarding take-out for each colleague. External stakeholders and safety experts were invited onsite to provide information sessions ranging from “Fire Safety At Home” to “Safety @ Home – Parenting”. A valuable addition included demonstrations on how to carry out chest compressions. Data collated by the safety rep group in advance showed a need to incorporate “Safe Use Of Fork trucks” and “Chemical Awareness” strands. Guerilla marketing techniques were adopted with two reallife scenarios set up using dummies, props and site materials. They proved to be highly effective and significantly increased the “talkability-factor” of the week. 2. Safety Step The Safety Step concept is one that has been adapted from the highly successful “Speaker Corner” in operation in Pfizer Puurs. In its simplest form it is a discussion based platform or safety forum. It is a vehicle to discuss incidents and near misses to highlight where opportunities exist for prevention, improvement or simply to raise awareness. It demonstrates leadership commitment onsite and is a very quick, flexible and impactful communications tool. 16 In effect, the “Safety Step” is discussed at a leadership level drafted up and distributed to the entire site within that working day. It specifies what happened and what items/areas to be mindful of. Leaders are more visible in their areas, have increased competencies in communicating safety messages and overall the Safety Step ensures heightened awareness site wide. 3. Injury Free “Ball Box” The canteen area is the single highest traffic area onsite. As a result it was chosen as the location for the Injury Free “Ball Box” which is a visual representation of the daily progress onsite. For every Injury Free Day a coloured ball is placed in the Perspex funnel to mark the achievement. However, when an injury (including a 1st Aid), happens onsite all of the balls are removed and the process starts again. Over the past few months this has proven to be an effective method of reinforcing the goal to become and Incident and Injury free site. As outlined in the 9 Commitments to Safety, It’s the sites belief that “All Injuries & Incidents are preventable”. 17 SECTION 3: “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS IN ACTION” BBS – CELEBRATING ITS 1ST BIRTHDAY 3.1 In early 2012, the Safety Team and Safety Reps developed a concept to celebrate the milestones and achievements of the BBS programme to date. This was brought to life in the form of a Birthday celebration onsite. Key goals and objectives were defined in the form of; Raise the profile of the BBS programme onsite Encourage the 25% of colleagues outside the programme to engage and sign-up Use event as mechanic to encourage certified colleagues to increase activity Promote the completion of scheduled observations Given the potential scale and return of the Birthday event the Safety team completed a communications and event audit in advance. This highlighted the platforms available and the optimum way to communicate to all colleagues site-wide. It was agreed that the following marketing plan would be adopted. Pre-Event Canteen Screens Graphic “Jacksmails” – Birthday Themed Leadership Commitment through the use of BBS logo on all internal mails Viral – safety reps engaged to seed message Engaged colleagues close to certification to encourage completion of observations Inclusion on weekly comms to all colleagues Safety team developed content to be displayed on A0 boards to highlight key messages and milestones Event Guerrilla – Set up overnight, engaging night shift first (85% of shift engaged on the night) 5 colourful display boards (results, trends, case studies) Canteen transformed & decorated Canteen Screen graphic updated Reception screen updated with BBS highlights, TIR and Birthday messaging “Happy Birthday BBS” Competition mechanic to win safety related prizes for the home 220 BBS cupcakes distributed to colleagues Sign-up station set up to register interest to get involved Certification/Award process Key note speaker Tony Nation onsite to deliver talks on benefits of BBS BBS promoted as an international language that can be used across a range of industries Branded balloons (giant foil BBS balloons) Post-Event Birthday card distributed to all colleagues onsite as reminder of key BBS achievements Call to action – “Sign Up Today” Thank You email to all colleagues who attended and engaged with BBS event Competition winners drawn and presented with prizes Training arranged for all new colleagues signed up for BBS 18 19 3.2 9 COMMITMENTS TO SAFETY – “MY SAFETY COUNTS DVD” “Your Safety Counts” engages colleagues from all levels of the organization and is a great source of information, knowledge sharing, motivation and above all a platform to recognise the health and safety results achieved and vision for the future. “Your Safety Counts” places colleagues at the core of all activity and is collaborative and innovative in its approach. By placing colleagues at the epicenter of the campaign there is a true sense of ownership, accountability and ultimately achievement. It’s for colleagues – By Colleagues. The DVD commissioned and produced onsite is a prime example. Below are some examples of the actions colleagues take to ensure they work safely to return home safe every day. Finola Allen (QA) Chris Reidy (Warehouse) Anna Mc Carthy (Labs) “Outside of work I suppose my family depend on me, I mean my parents they depend on me more, and I need to stay safe and healthy so that as they grow older that they can call on me whenever they need me” “I wear my PPE every day. I also make sure to use my manual handling aids when needed and I always use correct precautions when lifting, not to be stooping or over reaching” “I need to be aware of my colleagues around me. My actions impact them too”………”If I was to have an accident then the person working on the bench next to me could be injured” Tony Varian (Production) Mary Crockett (Supervisor, Labs) Michael Falvey (EHS Operations) “….. The main thing really is that people can become complacent, and complacency can kill.” “The safety motto for me here in the labs is clean as you go. Good housekeeping really is the cornerstone on which good safety is built” “(recounting story)….…..I reckon if people came in that gate every morning with that kind of attitude everybody will go out the gate because they are looking after themselves and they are looking after the person next to them and they are all doing the same down along the line. We’ll all come in the gate safe – and all go back out the gate safe” “If you follow your standard operating procedures you will remain safe” “I really enjoy my free time, spending time with my family and friends is extremely important to me” 20 3.3 HOSHIN “X-MATRIX” – PROJECTS & PROGRESS The main benefit of “Safety X-Matrix” platform is that it provides confidence that the correct projects are being focused on to deliver each element of the site strategy. The projects identified and delivering safety results in 2011 include, but are not limited to the following: Project Description Safety Leadership Knowledge & Coaching Working on developing leader visibility across the site and demonstrated leadership commitment. SIMS SIMS or Safety Incident Management System is a mechanic for near miss and incident reporting. The site is currently working on a SIMS system that is easier to use, provides useable trendable data and facilitates closure of investigations within specified timeframes. Inherent in this is a visible management board to track progress. EHS Awareness Consistent and relevant messaging is the cornerstone of any good safety strategy. The Safety team is working on creative and novel ways to increase awareness, engagement and foster an interdependent culture onsite. Life Safety – Asphyxiant Working on improving the sites score to ensure best achievable compliance to RP-203 Process Safety Leaks Working on data generation from SIMS trending, BBS observations and predicting potential injuries from incidents to put plans in place to eliminate leaks of flammables/corrosives Permit Improvement Output from permit Kaizen to improve the permit forms, training and approach to work permitting Ergonomics Examining manual handling process maps of activities onsite to determine areas for priority risk assessment of individual tasks Vent Header Basis of Safety Managing timelines and commitments from corporate EHS action BBS Observations As referenced earlier in the submission maintaining a sustainable level of BBS activity site wide and at all levels of the organization is key % LEL Project tracking commitment milestones on EHS corporate audit action 21 Elimination of Methanol for Mill cleaning 3.4 Exploring alternative means of scheduled cleaning of mill. Potential to remove/reduce use of methanol and or frequency of methanol cleaning in order to eliminate colleague exposure and potential leaks EHS COMMUNICATIONS AND AWARENESS (KEY EXAMPLES) Consistent and relevant messaging is the cornerstone of any good safety strategy. The Safety team is working on creative and novel ways to increase awareness, engagement and foster an interdependent culture onsite. EHS communications and awareness is a priority safety project under the safety X-Matrix referenced in section 3.3. Outline below are some visuals and examples of recent campaigns rolled out onsite. It is important to note that most if not all of the communications campaigns are developed, designed and distributed by colleagues’ onsite further adding to the localization and authenticity of “Your Safety Counts”. The site ran a competition for kids of colleagues, so that they too could play an important role in “Your Safety Counts”. Their task was to come up with names for our two safety characters onsite used in cardboard cut-outs, posters & wider site safety comms. 22 The judges reviewed all entries and the winning entry received a prize from the safety team. And the winner is…………………… “SAFE SALLY” “WRECKLESS RICHARD” SECTION 4: QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITIAVE RESULTS 4.1 A TRANSFERRABLE AND SUSTAINABLE CAMPAIGN The impact of the actions undertaken within “Your Safety Counts” has contributed to a reduction in the TIR rate, a heightened awareness of health and safety related issues and above all a more engaged workforce. The principles, programmes, projects delivered through “Your Safety Counts” are replicable and transferrable. To date it has received recognition from international colleagues, awarded a Safety & Sustainability Star and has been shared within the Irish and Global Pfizer Network. “Global EHS would like to thank everyone who contributed to the 2011 Safety & Sustainability Award program. The competition was significant; in total there were 163 entries, each one of which outlined significant achievements and innovation being made by our colleagues in reducing the impact of Pfizer operations and significantly improving our Environmental, Health and Safety performance.” “Your Safety Counts” goes beyond compliance which is evident in the results achieved to date, the improvements onsite and the number of people that have been engaged internally and externally. It is supported at all times by the robust systems onsite in the form of Accident & incident reporting, Risk Assessments, Hazaop, Permit to Work, Emergency Response and Occupational Health. 4.2 RESULTS – SUMMARY OF KEY RESULTS UNDER “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” Success can be measured in a number of ways. Pfizer Little Island prides itself on the measurement and tracking tools ingrained in “Your Safety Counts”. Significant progress has been made to date onsite. The results achieved to date have been extremely impressive and a new challenge lies ahead in sustaining and building on the below. For the purpose of this submission a firm focus has been placed on TIR, BBS and the Hoshin X-Matrix for Operational Excellence. 4.2.1 TIR – TOTAL INCIDENT RATE “Your Safety Counts” and in particular the BBS programme have directly contributed to the reduction in the Total Incident Rate or TIR for the site. A corporate target was put in place to reduce TIR by 40% from 2006-2010. In reality, Pfizer Little Island surpassed the corporate target set within that timeframe. The sites TIR is currently 0.0. 23 4.2.2 BBS – STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Safety in Little Island is not just the health and safety team, evidence of same can be clearly demonstrated in the BBS programme onsite. The introduction of BBS – Behvaioural Based Safety in 2010 played a key role in achieving a more engaged workforce with respect to Health and Safety Onsite. The Safety rep group are proactive in their efforts with a significant proportion of the site H&S qualified. Results achieved thus far include: 65% of the site directly involved in the programme 160 people participating in the sites proactive behavioural training and observation program 357 BBS observations completed to date 156 trained in BBS (others in-training) 57 certified in BBS 1071 safety conversations or engagements to date 3½ time as many good behaviours observed that at-risk behaviours All areas and levels of the organisation engaged in BBS 24 BBS is a tangible programme achieving real change onsite. For example key findings within observations have led to improvements in procedures/tasks making them inherently safer for colleagues onsite. Case studies or “BBS Success Bulletins” can be found in the appendices relating to four areas. “The Sludge Judge”, Heavy Metal Test in QC Lab, Rimmed Pallet (for the transportation of Just Rite Solvent Kettles) and “Transportation of recyclable glassware from the QC lab”. 4.2.3 MISSION AWARD – LITTLE ISLAND X-MATRIX APPROACH & RESULTS Pfizer Little Island pioneered the implementation of the Hoshin X-Matrix Operational Excellence approach. In 2012, the site was recognized with the top Pfizer Global Supply “Mission Award” not only for the use and implementation but also for the results achieved. The improvement of safety performance onsite was the key contributing factor in achieving such a prestigious award. 25 Mission Award for LI X-Matrix Pictured left: Chairman and CEO of Pfizer, Ian Read along with Anthony Madaluna, President of Pfizer Global Supply, on hand to congratulate the Pfizer Little Island Team SECTION 5: “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” - A CONTINUOUS AND VISIBLE STRATEGY 5.1 WHY “YOUR SAFETY COUNTS” WORKS NOW – AND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK “Your Safety Counts” is a robust Safety Strategy that has delivered significant results for the Little Island site. It has provided the side with a vision and a mechanism to affect real change in the area of Health and Safety. “Your Safety Counts” actively engages colleagues and improves their relationship with safety onsite. The marketing techniques of tactical, viral and guerrilla are all deployed to support the communications aspect of “Your Safety Counts” delivering maximum exposure and return. By adopting best practice marketing and communications techniques messages cut-through. “Your Safety Counts” is a demonstration of our ongoing commitment to Health and Safety. It illustrates the business value of responsible care, along with robust initiatives for achieving health and Safety Excellence in the workplace. “Your Safety Counts” is a replicable and transferrable strategy. Colleague engagement is key. By focusing on the work environment through BBS, Operational Excellence and the 9 Commitments to Safety colleagues have a shared responsibility for Health and Safety onsite. This is supported by an extensive EHS communications and awareness programme that reinforces the importance of a safe working environment while simultaneously encouraging safety at home. The inclusion of the home aspect ensures family and friends become a key driver for influencing change. A quote from the DVD produced reflects this: “Work is an important part of all our lives but it’s not the only part. Our life outside of work is also very important and we all need to work safely to return home safely every day.” 26 Pfizer Little Island is striving to become incident and injury free site and is truly on a journey to a safer site.
