Update on the parking lot on the north side of
our building looks like nothing will be done until
next spring as of this time. This means we will have
to endure another year of construction and parking issues that we
were hoping to avoid. It is not final yet, but I am almost certain
that it is too late in the year for any construction to be started on
this project. If anything changes I will keep you all informed as to
ctober
what is going to happen.
I want to take this time to welcome Kim Kallhoff to our kitchodge eeting

YARNOVERS
Yarnovers will start meeting on
October 10 at 9:30 am in the Viking
Room. We welcome anyone who
knits, crochets, or does any other
type of handiwork to come and
spend time sharing projects, patterns,
and pleasant conversation. Monthly meetings
are held on the second Friday.
In the past we have done group projects of
bandages for Global Missions and prayer shawls. One idea for our next effort is the Knitting for
Georgia Program. Johanna Holtan, daughter of
Pastor Phil and Merrie Sue Holtan, has been serving with the Peace Corps in Georgia prior to the
Russian invasion. She is collecting caps, mittens,
and scarves to distribute to those in need.
If you have any questions or suggestions,
please call Lynne Rommesmo at 280-1674. We
hope to see you there!
IT’S TIME
FOR

our new bowling season. We meet the day after
the Lodge meeting (Friday) at Red River Lanes
in north Fargo at 1:00 p.m. All skill levels are

and enjoy some fellowship. You can even work
on your Sports Medal Program by participating. All bowlers will receive an enamel bowling pin. Spectators are welcome too! We hope that you
will join us for some fun times!

KRINGEN YOUTH KLUBB
The Kringen Youth Klubb held their first meeting of the new season on September 13, 2008, at
First Presbyterian Church, Fargo. We were unable to meet at the Sons of Norway due to scheduling conflicts, and we sincerely want to thank Presbyterian Church for accommodating us. They
are great neighbors!
We were very pleased to welcome four new members and twenty-seven returning members. Since this meeting, I have received calls regarding two more new members and more returning
members. Membership generally increases by the end of October, as many youth are involved in
soccer, as well as juggling new school schedules and other activities to make everything fit. We
remain flexible and as things settle down, we move ahead for another season and a fun year!
We began our meeting with family and youth introductions, and then proceeded with our activity of the day, which was the Norwegian Fjord Horse. Packets were assembled with pictures and
information about the Fjord horses, which the youth could take home. We engaged in discussion
about these wonderful horses, which the youth so enjoy. Many of our members were very familiar
with the Fjord horse from our annual trip to the Robert and Sally Kjorsvig Fjord Horse farm in
Roslyn, SD. The youth also worked on a coloring and puzzle activity following discussion.
Frode Tilden and son, Tevon, talked to the group about their trip to Norway this summer. We
passed out maps of Norway and youth, together with parents, located some points of interest on
the map following Frode’s talk. Tevon and Frode passed out candy treats from Norway, which all
enjoyed!
We concluded the morning with snacks and discussion regarding schedules and activities for the
coming season. A topic of interest was for youth to be involved in the Youth Cultural Skills and
Sports Medal Programs, working toward certain achievements and earning the medals offered. We
have completed achievements in both cross country skiing and folk dance and will proceed toward
these goals.
As we begin the fall season, we see busy times ahead, but we promise a fun season. Our next
meeting will be Saturday, October 11 (10:00-12:00) at S.O.N. Kringen Lodge.

OCTOBER IS SON
FOUNDATION
MONTH
October is the time to celebrate
and promote the great work done by
the Foundation. The Sons of Norway
Foundation awards scholarships and
grants to promote the heritage and culture of Norway and provides assistance
to ease the burden through humanitarian aid to members, lodges and
their communities following natural
disasters.
In the past year this fund has helped
a Northwood, ND resident whose life
was devastated by the tornado.
In 2007 Clara Evenson, a member of our lodge, gave a gift of $75,000
through her will. This will provide for
youth in District 4 to attend language
and cultural camps.
Please consider making a donation
through memorials or honorariums in
celebration of anniversaries or special
birthdays. We also have a “Pass The Pig”
promotion where donations may be
made at the monthly lodge meetings.
To have your Posten Newsletter sent via email instead of receiving the Posten in
the mail, please send your email info to Bruce Bohnsack at srob909878@aol.com.
This will help cut down the cost of mailing the newsletter. Thank you.

North Dakotans planning
to bring Lincoln
Bicentennial celebration
to Norway in July, 2009
Plans are being made to bring a group of people with ties to North Dakota to Norway for
next year’s Fourth of July commemoration of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. In
1914, as part of the 100th anniversary of Norway becoming a fully independent country, a group
of Norwegian Americans in North Dakota collected enough money to erect a bronze bust of
President Lincoln in Oslo, Norway. The idea for this bust was inspired by a similar sculpture
North Dakota Governor Louis Hanna had seen on a trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania where he
attended the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in July, 1913. A delegation traveled to Norway to present the bust as a gift from the people of North Dakota, with the unveiling taking place on July 4, 1914. Speeches were given by Governor Hanna,
Editor P.O. Stromme of Grand Forks, and Smith Stimmel, a Fargo man who had once served as
a bodyguard to President Lincoln. Governor Hanna’s daughter, Dorothy, unveiled the statue,
which still stands in Frogner Park in Oslo. It was accompanied by two engraved bronze tablets. One featured an excerpt from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and reads, “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” The other reads, “Presented to
Norway by the people of North Dakota, U.S.A., July 4, 1914.”
During Germany’s occupation of Norway in World War II, the Lincoln bust became the
site of silent anti-Nazi protest. Each July 4th, beginning in 1940 until the war ended in 1945,
Norwegians turned out by the thousands to gather around the statue, their heads bowed in silence. Typically, the Nazis forbade any public gatherings or demonstrations, but did not halt this
annual event.
The statue was sculpted by 21-year-old Paul Fjelde (1892-1984), a Valley City artist who
later had a very successful career as a sculptor and is known for his sculptures of famous Norwegian Americans such as Charles A. Lindbergh. Fjelde was selected by a committee chaired by
Governor Hanna to create the bronze bust of Lincoln which was cast in Chicago. This is the
only statue in Oslo’s Frogner Park that is not the work of Norwegian sculptor, Gustav Vigeland
(1869-1943).
A replica of this Lincoln bronze bust is located on the front lawn of the Traill County
Courthouse in Hillsboro, where it was dedicated in ceremonies on September 8, 1918. A second
bronze replica, now at the Genesco Historical Museum in Illinois, was originally located at the
Union Stockyards in Chicago. When the stockyards closed in 1971, it was moved elsewhere in
the state before being purchased by a former resident of Genesco and donated to the museum
in 1998. The original plaster cast of the bust is housed in the Allen Memorial Library at Valley
City State University. Paul Fjelde was a student at then, Valley City State Normal School when
he created the statue.
Further information about the planned trip to Norway in July, 2009, will be made
available as plans are finalized. Check the North Dakota State Historical Society website:
www.nd.gov/hist or the Abraham Lincoln National Bicentennial Commission website at www.
abrahamlincoln200.org for more information.

Book discussion group news
On Monday noon, October 13, Kringen Lodge’s Book Discussion Group holds its monthly
meeting in the Lounge. Our book selection for October is They Took My Father by Mayme
Sevander. This book is subtitled, Finnish Americans in Stalin’s Russia and tells what happened
to the hundreds of Finnish American citizens who re-migrated back to Europe, - to the Russian
Karelia – where they thought they were going to enjoy a “Socialist Paradise” in Stalin’s Russia. They found just the opposite. This is a timely book to read because of the recent happenings in
Georgia, an independent country next to Russia! This book is available in our Kringen library
or you can purchase a copy at Zandbroz on Broadway or at the Stabo in West Acres. Or, you can
check it out from a local church or public library. For those of our lodge members who want to
also begin to read our November selection - it is entitled Queen Emma and the Vikings by Harriet
O’Brien. This is a fascinating portrait of a little-known, but remarkable woman. She was married first to Athelred, the king of England and after his death to Knut of Denmark who was also
known as King Canute of England! Two of her sons became kings of England and to top it all off,
Queen Emma was the great-aunt of William, the Conqueror! It is a most interesting biography
of a little-known woman. Our Book Discussion Group has prepared a list of books that we are
going to be reading and discussing during October, 2008 to September, 2009. You can pick up
a copy of that listing in our Sons of Norway Library. All Sons of Norway members are heartily
welcome to our interesting book discussions! New Member

ANOTHER
GREAT MYSTERY TOUR
Our exciting day started with a visit to Fort Abercrombie where we learned all about its history from a
Union Army soldier. After a trip through Kent we ended
up in Wahpeton at the Chahinkapa Zoo. All the tour participants enjoyed a ride on the Prairie Rose Carousel before
visiting the zoo. The animals were all out and anxious to
see us. The white tiger was a favorite sight. The bears and monkees entertained us with their many tricks and antics.
After a sightseeing tour of the area we went to Prante’s
Fine Dining for a delicious three meat buffet with all the
trimmings and musical entertainment provided by Tilford
Kroshus and his band. Everyone enjoyed this wonderful
trip!
