Newsletter articles are due to the editor by the 20th of the month. Articles may be e-mailed to Sharon Yamakawa at fpneditor@comcast.net. Classified ads for the newsletter should be sent to lyndouglas@sbcglobal.net. Newsletter Submissions Please see “Fox Point News Submission Policies and Guidelines” at www.foxpoint.org. Architectural Submissions Plans and proposals, along with applications for architectural changes and home additions, are due the first Monday of the month to Chris Kitzman, Architecture Chair. Application forms are available at www.foxpoint.org. Happy Birthday to the Fox Point Homeowners Association! The FPHA is 47 years old this month, and some original homeowners are still living in Fox Point! Calling ALL Fox Point Residents! We Need Volunteers! There are many positions within Fox Point that require a volunteer. Failure to find replacements, whether it be a board member, party planner, or block captain, means that we could lose the wonderful amenities this neighborhood has to offer. Be a part of our community and volunteer a small amount of your time! If you would like to help Fox Point, please contact Geoff Ommen or another committee chair. Thanks! Newsletter Policies Have Been Posted! To help those submitting notices and reports for inclusion in the newsletter (and to help the newsletter staff process them!), the Fox Point News staff has posted newsletter submission policies and guidelines on the Fox Point website at www.foxpoint.org. These policies cover issues of style, content, length, deadlines, and so forth. Please review them carefully before submitting notices for the newsletter. The newsletter staff will thank you! 2 Fox Point News May 2012 President’s Letter By Doug Zwiener (douglas.zwiener@gmail.com) Nothing too exciting to report from last month’s board meeting. We had six homeowners attend the meeting! To keep participation up, I think we should debate every month whether to allow the Barrington Area Masters swim team to use our pool. We even had one homeowner stay the entire time—he is new to the neighborhood and was just being kind to us. Thanks, we appreciate the attention! As implied above, we discussed and approved the Barrington Area Masters swim team’s early morning use of our pool. They will supply guards and instructors and will open the pool on weekdays between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. In addition to benefiting the Fox Point homeowners who are members of the Masters team, this arrangement will benefit many other homeowners: (1) The pool will be open and available for Fox Point residents to use if they want to get in an early morning swim; (2) the Masters team will check the water condition prior to the arrival of the kids’ swim teams for practice. If the chemicals are out of balance, the Masters team will alert Pool Watch so they can take appropriate action before the young swimmers arrive. We did other exciting things like approving (1) last month’s minutes, (2) the financial statements, and (3) the payment of the 2012 insurance premium. And the new homeowner remained through it all! Elaine Leighton brought use up to date on the progress of the pool-renovation project. At this time, Elaine and the architects are working with the State of Illinois to obtain its approval of the plans for the project. We may not get the state’s full approval to proceed before the end of the summer. Bob Mares was pleased to report that the tuck-pointing of the wall at the south entrance was nearing completion. We heard all about the pace of work. I am sure many of you have had projects at home that proceeded at the same pace—“oh yeah, we’ll be right on it tomorrow.” Thanks, Bob, for sticking with this project through all its phases. Thanks for your continued support. Board Report: Treasury By Lynn Douglas (lyndouglas@sbcglobal.net) Have you Paid Your 2012 Dues Yet? As this newsletter goes to print, about 5% of homeowners have not yet paid their 2012 Annual Assessment of $882, which was due March 31, 2012. If you have not taken care of your annual obligation, do so today to avoid interest fees and legal collection. Check Payments Mail to: Picker & Associates 1130 Lake Cook Road Suite 130 Buffalo Grove, IL 60089 Attention: A/R Fox Point Homeowners Association Credit Card Payments MasterCard and Discover Card may be used for a nominal surcharge. The link and instructions for using credit cards were included with the invoice and are also available at www.foxpoint.org. Selling or Refinancing? Your property will not transfer unless your annual dues are paid in full and there are no amounts owing to the association. It is becoming customary for lenders to have the same requirement for refinancing. Requests for letters confirming your account status should be sent to my e-mail address (shown above). Please provide 30 days’ notice before the intended closing date for me to respond to your lender, attorney, or title company. 3 Fox Point News May 2012 Board Report: Pool By Elaine Leighton (eleighton@comcast.net) The pool will open in a little over two weeks! Our new management firm, Pool Watch, has begun preparations for opening day—Saturday, May 26. We reviewed and updated our pool procedures, so please carefully read the following information. Our season hours and guest rules are published in the 2012 Fox Point Directory, but below we have printed the open hours, emphasized some key points, and included some IMPORTANT new information. Homeowner Information Sheet—NEW All Fox Point homeowners who wish to use the pool must submit a 2012 Fox Point Homeowner Information Sheet (attached to this newsletter and available online at www.foxpoint.org). Each household must complete one information sheet and attach a recent photo of all members of the household. This information sheet will be used by pool staff to verify the residency of those wishing to enter the pool area. Currently, we do not have photos for many residents, and those we do have are out of date. The information sheet must be turned in when a resident first visits the pool in order for the resident to be allowed to enter the pool area. Parents must make sure that their children take the completed sheet with them to the pool if a parent will not be accompanying them that day! Guest Policies The guest fee is $5.00 per person per day regardless of the time the guest arrives at the pool. There is no charge for children under four years old. Full payment either in cash (exact amount) or by check (payable to FOX POINT HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION) is required before guests may enter the pool area. Residents may arrange with the manager to pay in advance for their guests. Special guest-observers who wish to watch their family members swim (such as visiting grandparents) will be admitted without charge. These guests must not be attired for swimming. The fee for live-in house guests or nannies is $8.00 per person per week or $50.00 per person for a summer pass. Homeowners must accompany their guests who wish to use the pool. Before entering the pool area, each guest must be registered and have her/his fee paid by the accompanying homeowner. The homeowner is responsible for the guest’s conduct and must remain on the premises as long as the guest stays. In order for a homeowner’s child to be eligible to bring a guest, the child and the guest must both be at least 12 years old. 4 Fox Point News May 2012 Board Report: Pool (continued) Party Reservations 1. Only one awning area in the main pool area may be reserved at any given time. All food and beverages must be kept in this area. Additional awning areas may be used by all others at the pool. The party fee is $25.00. 2. Only one party at a time may be held at the pool. Party times are 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The party host must be at least 21 years old, and a homeowner must be present at the party. When finished, each party group must clean up the awning area it used. Pool parties should be reserved with the pool manager. The completed reservation form and the deposit check must be submitted in order for a reservation to be held. 3. All nonresident party guests must pay the pool’s guest fee to attend the party. Homeowners may pay for their guests, or guests may pay at the door either in cash (exact amount) or by check (payable to FOX POINT HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION). 4. NEW FOR 2012: Private parties may be held for one to two hours after the pool closes (but no later than 10:00 p.m.) for a fee of $25.00 per hour (payable by check to Fox Point Homeowners Association) and a cash payment of $20.00 for each guard on duty during the party. The manager will decide the number of guards to have on duty based on the total number of people attending the party (1 guard for every 25 party guests). The total number of party guests may not exceed 50. The party host must be at least 21 years old, and a homeowner must be present during the party. The number of private parties will be limited to one per week. All nonresident party guests must pay the pool’s guest fee to attend the party. Barrington Area Masters at the Pool As Doug mentioned in his report, the board approved the return of the Barrington Area Masters swim team to the Fox Point pool for the summer of 2012. The following notice is from the Masters team to all residents who are 18 or older. Can’t run anymore? Joints ache? Try the best low-impact exercise available. Come join the Barrington Area Masters swimmers for open swimming at the Fox Point pool between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, June 5– August 31. Professional coaches will be on hand to help you with your stroke or to provide a workout. Participation is free to Fox Point residents who are 18 or older. Our skill levels range from novice to “crossing the English Channel,” so there will be a lane that fits your ability. Call Dave Jacobsen at 847-514-8291 for details. NOTE: The term homeowner(s) in the above report refers to renter(s) as well. Board Report: Safety and Welfare By Dan Sherry (safetyandwelfare@gmail.com) Reports have been flowing in. Apparently, it would have been humorous to watch as many of you hit the brakes on the north side last month when the police’s speed display trailer caught you in the act—if the problem weren’t so serious. The south side will have its chance to step up and slow down this month. I have plenty of “Slow Down” signs for those who want them. As for the gaslights, a significant number of people have expressed a desire to convert them to electricity. That is an option. There are a number of factors that can affect the outcome and price of a conversion—the type of lamp desired; the voltage (low vs. high), which determines the depth of the trench needed and whether a transformer is required; the vendor’s access to trenching equipment; distance of the lamp from the home; landscape obstacles; switch options; solar options; and others. So providing a ballpark estimate is not possible, but at least two quotes are strongly recommended. Listed below are two companies recommended by FP homeowners who have had success with their services. Rein Electric: 847-343-8697 AZ Electrical: 847-980-7840 Please see the names of gaslight vendors I listed in last month’s newsletter—if you have still not fulfilled this obligation. Have a great and safe month, everyone! 5 Fox Point News May 2012 Board Report: Social By Keith Gritzek (kg471@aol.com) Easter Egg Hunt Recap A LIVE VISIT FROM THE EASTER BUNNY—A FUN TIME FOR THE KIDS—NO RAIN—WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!! We want to give a quick thank you to the people who helped us with the event—Susan (Stoga) Ben, Payton Muhs, Rachel and Kristen Gadbois, Isabel Filian, Maggie Horak, Carrie Ben, Caroline Prentiss, and Lara Gritzek. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU goes to Caroline Prentiss and Lara Gritzek for stuffing ALL of the eggs!!! And SPECIAL THANKS go to Doreen Muhs, who helped with everything!! HELP WANTED!!! If you are interested in helping with any of our upcoming events, please let me know. Fishing Derby Date: Father’s Day weekend Time: TBD We are still looking for a chairperson for this event. If you are interested, please contact me. Board Report: Tennis By Mike Joyce (tennis@foxpoint.org) There’s a lot to report this month regarding tennis: 1. Update on lessons (payment changes) 2. Announcement of first tournament (June 1–3) 3. The “Woody” 4. Women’s League announcements 5. Introduction to Drill (and Play), including registration form Lessons There are no changes to the lesson plan that Josh is managing—only changes to the way checks should be written. Please continue to send payment checks directly to Josh, but make the checks payable to FOX POINT HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION. Tournament Announcement It’s time to try out those brand new nonskid tennis shoes in the first tournament of the season to be held June 1–3, weather permitting. Since we have found that people have a lot of conflicts during the Memorial Day weekend, we’ve decided— based on experimental data we’ve received in the past—to try hosting a tournament the following weekend. Because the Fox Point tennis courts have been known for half a century as our own “Friendly Confines,” this tournament will have a mixed-doubles, round-robin format. Each person will play, rotate, and keep track of his/her own scores. The top two point-leaders on the men’s and women’s flights will play for the championship. As always, it will be a lot of fun. Registrants and friends are nudged to consider bringing a dish, drink, or dessert for Saturday night. The hours of play will be approximately 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. on Friday, 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 2:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. on Sunday. Exact hours of play will be determined by the number of registrants. Register by e-mailing “I want to play” to tennis@foxpoint.org. The Woody Is Coming! Are you the one who donated the wooden racquets to the Goodwill store? If so, they are now in my house and awaiting the upcoming “Woody” tournament. Details will come, but expect to finally have a reason to wear those 1970s tennis clothes (sans shorts for me). Bring your favorite wooden tennis relic (or choose from my selection), and join in the fun. The wooden racquets will mostly neutralize any competitive differences in play, and anyone who breaks a racquet will pay! 6 Fox Point News May 2012 Board Report: Tennis (continued) FROM THE COURTS OF JOANNA CARL AND THERESE DONOGHUE We are very excited about the start of the Fox Point summer tennis season! There are a lot of fun options for everyone, including the Wednesday evening Women’s League and the morning Women’s Drill. Women’s League For the evening league, let us know if you are interested, and we will arrange to have the three-level courts again. You do not need to inform us of your availability each week—just show up! And there is no charge this year for participating in the league. The first evening the league will play is June 6 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Women’s Drill (and Play) We are excited to announce that our morning drill series will be taught by Al Washburn, a USTA certified pro who has taught at several area tennis clubs. I (Therese) have taken lessons from him during the past six years at Crystal Lake’s Racquet Club. His lessons are high energy and fast paced. If you join us for drill, we truly believe that you will experience a good workout and improve your game at the same time! We will be offering the morning drill for only one session this year—from June 5 to 28. Beginner lessons will be held on Tuesdays, intermediate on Wednesdays, and advanced on Thursdays. All lessons will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Because June 5 is the last day of school, the first beginner lesson will be held on Friday, June 8, and subsequent lessons will be held on Tuesdays. The cost for the session is $120 per person. Important Note: For ease of scheduling and consistency of play, we require that participants sign up for the entire session. We understand that because of vacations, kids’ activities, and other circumstances, you may miss a lesson. Al has been kind enough to offer a makeup lesson for each level. This makeup lesson will be your opportunity to make up one missed lesson. The date of the makeup lesson will be decided by Al after our session begins. Al is very flexible and wants to work with all of us! Please send us an e-mail by Friday, May 14, if you are interested in registering for the morning drill session (joanna_carl@hotmail.com or tdonoghue8@gmail.com). There must be at least four players for each lesson. The registration form attached to this newsletter and the payment (cash or checks made payable to FOX POINT TENNIS) must be submitted by June 1. They can be dropped off at 1400 Lake Shore Drive South (Therese’s house)—small mailbox by the front door. We are looking forward to another great tennis season! If you have any questions, please e-mail us. See you on the courts!! 7 Fox Point News May 2012 FOX POINT DOLPHINS Swim Team We are thrilled that Scott Lattyak is returning as the Dolphins head coach.
