Bursting with the awe inspiring natural icons of the Colorado Plateau including Monument Valley and the vast Canyonlands of Utah, man made monuments and the art of ancient civilizations which inhabited Canyon County over 11,000 years ago, and the contemporary cultures of our First Nations peoples - the Navajo and the Ute. Hovenweep National Monument Driving the Moki Dugway Ancient Granary in Canyonlands National Park PHOTO: Gouldings Lodge Rainbow Bridge National Monument Canyonlands National Park consists of three distinct areas: Island in the Sky, the Needles, and the Maze. The Needles District is easily accessed from San Juan County via Utah Hwy. 211 which joins US Hwy. 191 fourteen miles north of Monticello. The Needles is named for an area of tall, slender sandstone formations. Over 60 miles of interconnecting trails offer stunning canyon scenery and over 50 miles of challenging backcountry, 4 wheel drive roads access campsites, trailheads, and park attractions. All 4 wheel drive roads require high-clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicles. Hiking is popular and trails access easily reached, highway vehicle parking. Squaw Flat campground, Wooden Shoe Arch Overlook, Cave Spring, Roadside Ruin, and Big Spring Canyon Overlook are all on paved roads. PHOTO: National Park Service PHOTO: ©Tom Till Canyonlands National Park Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park Truly a jem in our Outdoor Museum, Hovenweep offers the experience of true exploration among its ruins and hidden rock art. Examine structures build by the Anestral Puebloan people on the surface and in the canyons. Towers are the focal point of the monument but there are also residences, check dams, and granaries found on the landscape. Hunters and gatherers were here over 10,000 years ago. By AD 900 settlements began to appear and by the late 1200s, Hovenweep was home to over 2,500 people. The towers were built between AD 500 and 1300 by people associated with those living at Mesa Verde and other Four Corners sites. A variety of shapes and sizes, including square and circular, define the structures, D-shaped dwellings, and kivas (ceremonial structures, usually circular). The masonry at Hovenweep is as skillful as it is beautiful. Even the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde rarely exhibit such careful construction and attention to detail. Some structures built on irregular boulders remain standing after more than 700 years. Step into the mystery... PHOTO: National Park Service National Parks! National Monuments! National Recreation Areas! Our Outdoor Museum is...... PHOTO: Osamu Hashino At Natural Bridges our outdoor museum extends to the heavens. Named the first International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association, Natural Bridges offers astronomy programs under the star washed night sky of southeast Utah. View stars and planets spread out across the sky as if carelessly scattered for our enjoyment in one of the darkest night skies in North America. Programs allow visitors to see the stars and planets without the interference of civilization’s light found in almost every place we live. The park also shelters three of the world’s largest natural stone bridges. Paved trails lead from Bridge View Drive to overlook stations for each bridge and a longer trail descends into the canyon and allows a hiker to walk beneath all three on a day hike. Natural Bridges was one of the first National Park facilities to install solar power and the original array is on view in yet another museum-like display. ...a place to discover... Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Lake Powell Red rock and deep canyons surround Lake Powell and offer hiking, boating, fishing, exploring, camping, and remote and challenging back-country adventure! Camp under crystal clear night skies overflowing with stars and planets. Ski sparkling blue water within a canyon’s towering walls. Fish for striper, visit Rainbow Bridge National Monument to stand beneath it’s graceful arch, explore intriguing canyons and grottos. Boats of all sizes from small fishing craft to luxurious houseboats are available for fishing and exploring Lake Powell where you can build you own museum of memories. PHOTOS: Aramark ...a place to enjoy... Rainbow Bridge National Monument Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park A group lead by Jim Mike, a Ute guide, and John Wetherill in 1909 are credited with the ‘discovery’ of the bridge, however, native peoples and a few cowboys and trappers knew of the bridge before 1909. A museum display that took thousands of years to develop, Rainbow Bridge was formed by eons of stream action working on the rock. Natural bridges are rare and this one is the world’s largest known. The rocks at the base are Kayenta Sandstone laid down by inland seas and winds well over 200 million years ago. The bridge is Navajo Sandstone and was created as sand dunes were subsequently deposited to depths of up to 5000 feet (1524 meters) and hardened into rock. As the Colorado Plateau rapidly rose about 5.5 million years ago, the surface was buckled and cracked, river channels grew deeper, water flowed faster, and over time the bridge was formed. Access to Rainbow Bridge is via Lake Powell or a two day hike from Navajo Mountain which requires a permit from Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation. Spread across the Utah / Arizona border at the southern edge of San Juan County is one of the most photographed places on earth! You’ve seen it in films, as the eye-catcher for ads, and on television. Now, see it in person! PHOTO: NPS - nps.gove/rabr Natural Bridges National Monument Monument Valley displays its classic western scenery, unsurpassed beauty, and stunning red rock formations to best advantage in the morning and evening when the sun drapes intense color over the rocks and desert. Enjoy a tour with a native guide, shop for authentic native arts and crafts, and view a screening of Among the Monuments and Earth Spirit at Gouldings Lodge. Visit the indoor museums at Gouldings Lodge and the Navajo Park Visitor Center. PHOTO: Fred Buckner PHOTO: ©Tom Till PHOTO: Gouldings Lodge ...a place to excite... ...a place to imagine... Much of our outdoor museum is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Newspaper Rock Recreation Site, a cliff face covered with rock art along Indian Creek is a perfect place for a picnic on the way to Canyonlands National Park. Canyon Rims Recreation Area offers scenic overlooks into stunning canyons and desert gardens. Enjoy camping, hiking, biking, rock climbing and 4 wheel or OHV trails. Beef Basin, remote and accessible only by 4 wheel drive/OHV, shelters ruins and rock art. Pictographs (painted images) Grand Gulch Primitive Area Morning on the San Juan River Comb Wash follows Comb Ridge and shelters ancient home sites and rock art. Cedar Mesa offers unparalleled hiking through one of the world’s largest living groves of juniper trees. Grand Gulch Primitive Area offers ancient Ancestral Puebloan ruins in a large canyon system providing day hikes or weeks of adventure. Valley of the Gods is home to freestanding sandstone monoliths, delicate spires, and long rock ‘fins’. Plan for outdoor activity, carry adequate water, and travel with another vehicle when on remote trails. ...a place to explore... Manti La Sal National Forest Edge of the Cedars State Park & Museum Canyon Country is not only desert. Mountain ranges rise dramatically from the plateau to reach elevations of over 13,000 feet (3,962 meters). The La Sal Mountains rise at the northern boundary of San Juan County while the Abajo Mountains are at it’s center. The high elevation supports pine, fir, and aspen forest while adding contrast to the surrounding red rocks and high desert. Spring wild-flowers cover mountain meadows. Comfortable temperatures provide a cool respite during searing summer heat at lower elevation. Aspen trees splash gold across the slopes in the fall. Winter snow settles a quiet splendor on the scenery. Hike, bike, jeep, ATV, horseback along trails leading to sweeping views for the entire Four Corners region. Camp under the stars in US Forest Service campgrounds or on your own in a mountain meadow. View wildlife deep in the forest where mule deer and turkey can be seen foraging in the brush, where cougar and bear are more elusive but are there all the same, where eagles and hawks soar above the peaks. Southeast Utah is believed to have been heavily populated during the time the Ancestral Puebloan people lived in these canyons and on the mesas. This exquisite museum showcases that culture as well as other cultures dating back 11,000 years. Enter a residence and kiva built over 700 years ago. Delight in the macaw feather sash, beautifully made knives with wooden plates, a delicate loom, and a ‘medicine’ basket complete with the original objects. The only federal archaeological repository in Canyon Country, Edge of the Cedars State Park also hosts special exhibits, shows, festivals, and events. The museum provides unique ‘visible storage’ which allows you to view one-of-akind artifacts normally kept in storage. PHOTO: ©Tom Till Bureau of Land Management Goosenecks State Park View the Goosenecks of the San Juan River from an eagle’s perspective! The 1,000 foot (305 meter) cliff rises above one of the most striking examples of an entrenched river meander in North America. The river twists and turns through sinuous ‘goosenecks’ as it advances west on its journey to Lake Powell flowing over 6 miles (10 kilometers) while it advances to the west only 1 mile (1.5k). View layers of exposed geology in the canyon walls, revealed by 300 million years of erosion. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are between 310 and 270 mllion years old. The youngest are all around you at the top. The view is astonishing! Monument Valley lies on the southern horizon, Alhambra Rock rises to the south, Raplee Anticline graces the eastern horizon with its colorful wavy bands of sediment. This desert landscape reveals the underlying structure of the earth’s bones - a true outdoor museum. PHOTO: Coyotes Singing Studio PHOTO: Coyotes Singing Studio ...a place to stimulate... ...a place to learn... PHOTO: Larry Wells ...a place to inspire! Four Corners Monument The only place in the United States where four states share a single point on the compass. Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado meet at this point. The original marker was erected in 1912 as a simple cement pad but has recently been rebuilt in granite and brass. The visitor center is open year round and provides a Demonstration Center featuring Native American artisans. Vendors offer jewelry, crafts, and traditional foods. Picnic tables and restrooms are available. Services and accommodations within a 30 mile radius are very limited to small cafes, grocery stores, and self-service gasoline stations. The area is very remote. Museums & Pre-History Canyon Country Events Visitor Information San Juan County is virtually an outdoor museum of ancient ruins and rock art. As in any museum, we ask that you respect the archaeology. Please do not enter ruins, sit or climb on walls, press your hands against walls or rock art - all of which will damage this precious resource. Please enjoy the archaeology found here in our ‘outdoor museum’ and in our first-rate indoor facilities. Those areas accessed by 4 wheel drive require long days or overnight stays. Come prepared for a wilderness experience. Carry one gallon of water per day per person (don’t forget your pet) as well as water for your vehicle. It is not recommended that you travel to remote sites alone or with only one vehicle. When wet, some roads are impassable even for a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Check weather and road conditions prior to embarking on a trip into the backcountry. Most areas and sites are on paved roads. Some are accessed via graded gravel, and a few require 4 wheel drive. Most are within a short drive from the communities in the county.
