W I N T E R /S P R I N G 2 0 1 2 an ALABAMA WEDDING HANDMADE, HOMEGROWN, SIMPLY PERFECT TWELVE TRENDS for 2012 + A GUIDE TO WEDDING RINGS P H OTO BY A L I SA LY N N P H OTO G R A P H Y T STORY BY MARY BETH BURNER SHADDIX PHOTOS BY MORGAN TRINKER PHOTOGRAPHY The story of our wedding begins, I suppose, with the very beginning. I met David not on a blind date, not at a bar, but during a job interview. After leaving my fast-paced publishing career on the table, I was seeking a different path in the world of gardens, the great outdoors and a return to my “roots.” Looking at my work history, he questioned why I was interested in working in horticulture. I babbled on about my wish to learn all of the Latin botanical names, my desire to grow my own vegetables from seed, tend a garden and get my hands in the dirt. I thought the glazed look on his face meant I’d lost him in conversation—only to discover later that he thought he just interviewed his future wife! And, we’ve not been apart since. Our life together is very full—full of muddy boots, dripping wet dogs from swims in the pond and overfilled baskets of way-too-many heirloom tomatoes when we get a little obsessed with the seed catalogs. We both love the idea of having friends and family gathered together with homegrown food, good music and perfect weather. That’s just what we wished for on our wedding day. Except neither of us wanted to plan a wedding. Luckily, we are blessed with incredibly giving—and encouraging—friends who offered their pictureperfect backyard. After our many months of evading wedding planning and seeking the ideal laid-back venue, neighbors Lynn and Richard Yeilding exclaimed, “Why don’t you get married here?” It was an offer just too incredible to deny—rolling hills filled with a hardwood forest, a mirror-smooth lake, an understated yet elegant cozy lake cabin and cute dogs to boot. We immediately agreed, with the pronouncement that it’d be “simple.” Lynn, a mother of four who hosted two of her children’s weddings this summer, “We both love the idea of having friends and family gathered together with homegrown food, good music and perfect weather.” AN ALABAMA WEDDING handmade, homegrown and 94 | Birmingham Bridal | JAN 12 SIMPLY PERFECT JAN 12 | Birmingham Bridal | 95 “It was important to me that our wedding reflect us and show our pride of place. From the invitation to the menu to the décor, we included elements that were handmade, homegrown or represent Alabama.” THIS PAGE: Stealing a moment post-ceremony by the Yeilding vegetable garden and grape vines. OPPOSITE: Fresh flowers instead of a veil seemed more fitting for the gorgeous weather, while pearl and diamond earrings borrowed from a best friend complete the look. A floral pattern also adorned the Judd Waddell dress with Alençon lace. Mom’s excited fingers help with endless button loops! laughed with a wink. “You can try!” Simple is what we sought, but at least simply perfect is what we got. Planned in three short months with early November as our goal, we pulled together ideas of growing ingredients for the menu, using plants grown by David’s nursery for the décor, gathering loved ones for an outdoor ceremony under a grand tree and partying ’til the stars twinkled to the blues sounds of Birmingham’s Glen & Libba. It was important to me that our wedding reflect us and show our pride of place. From the invitation to the menu to the décor, we included elements that were handmade, homegrown or represent Alabama. A brilliant creative friend, Joshua Moore, and I had recently worked with an illustrator on a nature conservancy project, which naturally led to us hiring her to draw artwork for an outdoor wedding invitation. The artist incorporated David’s favorite honeybees and purple martins along with a hand-drawn bouquet of peonies, zinnias and hydrangeas (flowers we grew that are special to us) on eco-friendly invitations designed by Joshua. We kept the original, commissioned artwork as a keepsake that David will frame with old barn wood. We carefully planted 10 varieties of lettuces and such in the garden and tried to sweet talk our nine chickens into producing enough eggs to share my favorite Southern staple—deviled eggs—with our guests. Good People beer was planned for the boys during one of the biggest football days in the South. 96 | Birmingham Bridal | JAN 12 JAN 12 | Birmingham Bridal | 97 ABOVE and RIGHT: Our vows were exchanged beneath a tall, stately pine at the tip of the lake’s peninsula as the sun set. An alleé of October Glory maples served as a stunning outdoor aisle. OPPOSITE: After months of anticipation, our wedding day could not have been more fun, relaxing or ideal. Complete with handmade bouquets, boutionnieres, big smiles, lovable dog guests and the most glorious weather of the year, we were thrilled to exchange rings. My custom band was made to match a 1920s estate ring David purchased, and his band suits his style. Mom and I made one of the most memorable road trips of my life to Florence to spend a morning with the kind, talented folks at Alabama Chanin for an exquisite camisole top, which I donned for our Friday farm rehearsal. The handmade bridal cotton couture is something I will cherish forever. For the ceremony, we found a stunning simple silk organza gown with Alençon lace, and it was just my style—right off the rack! Mom enlisted the help of friends in south Georgia to craft handmade table runners and birdseed bags. A surprise find of an “S,” our monogram, on the exterior of Snapple bottles gave me the idea to enamel dozens of the jars to use as vases on the dining tables. One of the most special—and most popular!—elements was the cakes. Plural. As I’m not one 98 | Birmingham Bridal | JAN 12 for a sculpted, tiered, stiff cake, we opted for handmade creations from several of our extremely oven-savvy friends. There was a cake table showcasing carrot cake, pound cake, chocolate d’obage with teeny slivered layers, almond cake with apricot filling, German chocolate cake, caramel cake and bundt cakes formed into fall pumpkins. One of my favorite reception moments is a guest remarking in a hushed whisper, “You have a famous Kathy Eakin caramel cake! What did you do to get that?!” What made it a memorable wedding and not just a fun backyard fete were the contributions and commitments of family and friends. My amazing mother practiced and perfected her hobby of flower arranging into an impressive display. She and our dear friend Polly Lamon labored with love over our homegrown flowers for tabletop decorations and meticulously created a bouquet worth a magazine article. Polly also potted Maple Valley’s funky carnivorous plants with wild moss from our farm; those were certainly conversation starters at dinner. One of our closest friends, Rob Landry, is rather talented with a few strings and brought us all to tears and grins during the ceremony with “Georgia on My Mind,” “Canon in D” and “Here Comes the Sun.” And as the sun dropped, we hurriedly danced to “Stars Fell on Alabama” so that we could dig into our Southern supper and our table of cakes. As the night grew cold, we moved inside to the blazing fire at the Yeilding’s stone hearth, eating a second plate of cake and thanking our lucky stars for such a perfect Alabama night. JAN 12 | Birmingham Bridal | 101 Saturated color SOMETHING OLD, BLUE, BUT MOSTLY NEW Twelve Trends for 2012 While Birmingham’s brides embrace the “something-old” Southern traditions, they’re also savvy with “something new.” Here are 12 local wedding trends for 2012, from buttercream to bling. STORY BY JEAN M. McLEAN PHOTOS BY KELLI + DANIEL TAYLOR PHOTOGRAPHY Saturated color in bouquets are a hot trend for 2012. Flowers by HotHouse Design Studio. Modern vintage Brides are raiding grandma’s attic, gleaning milk glass vases, old photos and mismatched dessert plates to create an updated antique aura while even renting mix-and-match items for a vintage look, says Susan Mason of B&A Warehouse. Brides may display family wedding gowns or re-create vintage lace patterns on ever-popular buttercream icing, says Barb Sullivan of Barb’s cakes. Stephen DeVries Photo will continue to shoot some images in blackand-white, because brides want “something a little more timeless,” DeVries says. Expect a classic spin on everything from ribbon-wrapped invitations to getaway roadsters. Comfort cuisine Although Sullivan says Alabama grooms still enjoy hobby-themed cakes, more men are choosing old-fashioned desserts such as peach cobbler or apple pie served from a huge skillet, says Cathy Bearden of Montevallo’s Southern Magnolia event venue. Brides prefer pass-the-plate for seated, family-style meals at B&A Warehouse. Grits stations remain strong, says Mason, along with latenight snacks that might include fried pickles. Look for cocktail suppers with design-your-own options, says Diane Olexa of Olexa’s Catering, as well as chef-attended stations. 102 | Birmingham Bridal | JAN 12 Blue hydrangeas and delphiniums will bloom in bouquets, says J. Ross of Norton’s Florist. Color will abound in stationery, says Alan Picard of Alan’s Invitations, with color monograms or inner envelopes reflecting the cobalt blue, plum, pewter and peacock tones in dresses chosen at Bridesmaids, Inc. More color will be seen in table linens or fabric cake stands, says Olexa, although “there aren’t any particular colors that are dominant,” says Dorothy McDaniel of Dorothy McDaniel’s Flower Market. Pigments cross seasonal boundaries; summer navy, fall pistachio and year-round neutrals, including platinum bridesmaids’ dresses, offer multi-hue options. Whimsical touches This bride chose a retro-inspired going away suit with hat and gloves for the departure. Location: Sonnet House. Biodegradable Flutter Fetti gives wedding departures a ticker-tape parade feel with more bits of paper engineered to stay in the air longer. More grooms are opting for Southern classic desserts, such as fruit cobblers, instead of traditional chocolate cakes. Couples are enjoying this year’s recordable savethe-date cards that allow a customized voice/music announcement, says Picard. The new reception tradition, says Meghan Cease of M. Elizabeth Events, may be photo booths, where guests make zany pictures, with doubles for the couple. Meanwhile, Flutter Fetti, a biodegradable tissue paper product tossed with a flick of the wrist, is a fun send-off choice. Sprinkled sparkle Brooches are glamorous accents for cakes and wedding dresses. Cake by Jan O’Donnell. Ornamental pins are everywhere, from full broochladen bouquets to cakes. Expect more glitz in reception lighting, with light bars lending jewel and crystal patterns to ceilings and walls, says Cease. Glitz makes gowns glow, where beaded belts are “the hottest ticket in town,” according to The White Room’s Carolyn Kelley. The same jewelry might be seen on cakes, says Olexa, including rhinestone bands. JAN 12 | Birmingham Bridal | 103 Feminine f low Twists on tradition Some of Cease’s brides are moving unity candles to the reception. Arden Ward of Arden Photography sees engagement photos as more sentimental than previous years, with clean lines and accurate photo tones. Processional music may vary this year, says Katie Calhan of Engaged Wedding Library, and instead of tossing anything when bidding adieu, some guests are releasing wish-embellished helium balloons. Look for “fit and flare” style in bridal dresses, says Kelley, with the flare point varying from waist to mermaid-styled low hip. Long, flowing chiffons are back at Bella Bridesmaid, says Jeana Lee, with ruffles “everywhere.” At Bridal Bliss, mothers are choosing Jackie Kennedy-inspired ensembles that replace the suit. Helium balloons are a fun alternative for the bride and groom’s departure. Expect plenty of fit-and-flare wedding dresses in 2012. Royal redux Royal bride Kate Middleton has sparked an increase in wedding tiaras. Birmingham’s Romantic Wedding Venue Although the cupcake rage may be fading, cake pops and other tiny treats are oh-so 2012. Kathy G & Company will serve cookies with shot glasses of milk, says Kerri Kelley, along with micro-mini entrees such as pork tenderloin and tiny portabella panini. Minis could include internationally infused flavors, says Olexa, such as chipotle egg rolls. When you dream of your wedding day, do you imagine exchanging vows on a Grand and Elegant Estate? Keep these tips in mind when trying to make the perfect match. Try it on. It may be tempting to purchase a wedding band online, but avoid the impulse and don’t judge a ring by its photo. For best results, try on prospective wedding bands with your engagement ring before making a final decision. Pair your engagement ring with the right wedding band for a super-sweet combination. STORY by BY Molly MOLLY FolsE FOLSE story PHOTOS by BY daniEl DANIEL taylor TAYLOR photos Simple is safe. Most engagement rings pair well with smooth, traditional bands in matching gold or platinum. Solid bands are especially flattering to large or ornate engagement rings. Or, if a ring is particularly eye catching, consider forgoing the band all together. Stick with the same setting. Be mindful of your engagement ring setting when looking at bands. If your engagement ring setting is plain gold or platinum without diamonds, you can likely pair it with any number of bands. However, if your engagement ring features diamonds that are paveset or half-pave, channel-set or sculpted, consider complementing it with a smooth band or a diamond-encrusted band with the same type of setting. Color can be cool. Looking for something a little different? Consider a band with colored stones. Sapphires and rubies add a dramatic pop, while colored diamonds such as chocolate and canary are on-trend. Be careful with color, though, as trendy often doesn’t translate over time. We can cov your ev er en from to t p to bottom ! Don’t settle. If you’re unable to find a band that meets your needs, remember that custom bands are always an option, though they may come with increased costs. Custom bands can be made with curves to accommodate a large solitaire or with multiple rows of diamonds for added volume. Go with what you like. Your wedding band is an intimate purchase, and is something you will see every day for years to come. There are no hard and fast rules. If you find a combination you like, throw caution to the wind and take the plunge. Kathryn and Scot talked for hours on the back patio, immersed in one another as if they were the only two people at the party. Because she was dating someone else, and because Scot is a true Southern gentleman, he did not pursue her. Instead, an instantly strong friendship developed that lasted about a year. October 30, 2007, was a night the two will always remember. Kathryn had tickets to a Widespread Panic concert in Chattanooga, which she had planned to share with her current beau. The night before the show, he cancelled on her. As this was actually the third date he had cancelled within the past two weeks, she was not pleased. Yet Kathryn was not about to let those tickets go to waste, so she asked Scot to go. He accepted, whereupon the two traveled to Tennessee. Unbeknownst to them, this night would change their lives. During the concert, Kathryn excused herself for a trip to the restroom. In response, he gave her a peck on the lips. All the way there and back, Kathryn tried to figure out what that peck was, what it had meant. Even though she was confused, though, she did know one thing: she liked it. Until that evening, she had never looked at him in a romantic way, but once she did, she never stopped. Everything went perfectly that night! It was like a fairy tale. The entire drive home, Kathryn and Scot giggled and talked till they were hoarse. Upon returning to Birmingham, Kathryn without hesitation ended her current relationship, and she and Scot have not been apart since then. The Gentles exchanged vows at Sloss Furnaces on June 17, 2011, in the presence of family and close friends. In the hours before the ceremony, it stormed, with torrential rains and even hail. Kathryn greeted the unfortunate weather with a mixture of laughter and tears. Happily, the clouds broke at about 3:00 p.m., and the caterers, band and Sloss workers rushed to set up for the 6:30 p.m. wedding. Later, friends told the Gentles that each raindrop equaled one happy year of marriage. If that is indeed true, the couple is set for life and beyond! Reverend Mike Holly from Canterbury United Methodist Church officiated. The ceremonial music included “Chest Fever” and “Ophelia” by The Band, played on the guitar by Kathryn’s ever-so-talented brother, Sims Crawford. Kathryn’s walk down the aisle with her father was to “Life Without You” by Stevie Ray Vaughn, also played by Sims. Kathryn took a moment to express her gratefulness to God for sparing her father’s life so he could share this moment; a year earlier, he had been in ICU for over a month. The greatest gift the couple received JAN 12 | Birmingham Bridal | 127 A SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION Crawford · Gentle was the presence of their friends and family, some of whom had traveled from both near and far away, including Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Florida and Louisiana. The reception, also held at Sloss Furnaces, welcomed a larger group of revelers to dance to Blues Old Stand, dear friends of Scot, who performed into the night. The couple’s first dance was to Aretha Franklin’s “Baby I Love You,” and Kathryn and Scot strutted and jived to a memorable choreographed dance routine. Kathryn and her father danced to Van Morrison’s “Steal My Heart Away”, and Scot and his mother danced to Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken.” Kathryn’s wore a tiered wedding dress lined with ostrich feathers from BCBG and turquoise Old Gringo cowboy boots. She carried her mother’s handkerchief and wore the garter belt she used in her wedding 49 years ago. Kathryn’s hair and make-up was done by talented hair stylist and make-up artist Michael Gough of Profiles on Lorna Road. The cake, by Edgar’s Bakery, was topped with the cake topper Kathryn’s parents had used at their wedding as well. Scot’s mother hand-made all of the beautiful table toppers, and the whimsical signs at the festivities were constructed by Scot, painted by Kathryn. The bouquets, boutonnieres, and wedding flowers were arranged and created at Bloom in Homewood. Scot’s mother, an avid and skilled gardener, assembled all of the elegant arrangements for the tables. The food at the reception was provided by Yellow Bicycle Catering Company and George Sarris of The Fish Market & Dodiyos. It was cooked on site in lustrous copper pots and urns. Appetizers included feta cheese spread, spanikopita, tiropita, and greek meatballs. The guests moved between three food stations for the main course, including a Nicoise Bar with marinated grilled tuna presented with haricot verts, herbed new potatoes; a Grecian Bar containing classic gyros with grilled vegetables, chicken and pork; and a Low Country Boil Station with steamed crawfish, fresh shrimp, mussels, new potatoes, and corn. The photographer at the rehearsal dinner and reception was Kristen Mance Borden, owner and operator of Alabella Studios Fine Art Photography out of Florence, Alabama. Kristen received her Bachelors of Fine Art Photography from the University of Alabama in 2005. She found a passion for wedding photography by seeing the brilliance of capturing a memory by capturing the art of time. Alabella Studios specializes in a more boutique, journalistic and stylized approach. The experience and dynamic is artistic, classic, and environmental. Kristen’s extensive international travel has led her to create images that evoke a feeling of nostalgia with delicate and eclectic style. Kathryn’s parents are David and Kathy Crawford of Birmingham. Scot’s parents are Mike and Phyllis Devers of Eclectic and Patsi and Vann Gentle of Scottsboro. Both of Scot’s grandmothers were present, Fern Gamble of Eclectic and Carrie Gentle of Scottsboro. Kathryn, 36, is a domestic relations and tax attorney operating her own practice, Kathryn Crawford-Gentle, Esq. LLC, in Mountain Brook. Scot, 38, is a skilled carpenter of one-of-a-kind furniture and specializes in home remodels; his business is Gentle Renovations of Birmingham. Groomsmen were Bradley Aldridge, Nathan Smitherman, Brett Shinick, John Allen, Lee Hagood, Jeff Greene, Mike Winstead, Joe Ward and Ricky Henry. Before the ceremony, Bobby surprised Haley with a pair of one-of-a-kind bow-tie shaped diamond earrings which she had been eying for over a year. She presented him with a pair of bunny-shaped cufflinks to wear with his suit, a nod to Bobby’s secret pet name for her. Additionally, all the napkins, cozies, invitations and programs were monogrammed with an image of the Sonnet House’s signature oak tree with bunnies running underneath. Though the meaning may have not been obvious to all of their guests, these small touches really helped the couple to signify the special day as their own. One of the most meaningful parts of the day was a ring blessing that was incorporated into the ceremony. The couple’s wedding bands were placed in a mason jar that was passed through their immediate family and bridal party. Everyone took a few moments to pray over the rings as they started their life together. Haley and Bobby wanted to do something to let everyone they loved know they took their support very seriously. At the reception, guests enjoyed good food and an amazing band. The bride remembers coming out on the back porch and thinking to herself, “Now this is a party!” Haley changed into a fully sequined Aiden Maddox disco dress so she could dance that last hour away with her new husband and guests. Location: The Sonnet House Date: June 4, 2011 Photographer: Lisa Marie Photography H aley and Bobby had been told for years by mutual friends that they would make a great couple. Coincidentally, they met at the wedding of those two friends. At the reception, Bobby stepped on the train of Haley’s bridesmaid dress and said, “Where do you think you’re going?” That opening line made for an easy transition into talking and dating. 16 months later, they were married. The couple exchanged vows on June 4th, 2011 at The Sonnet House in Leeds, Alabama. Months earlier when the couple visited the site, Haley knew this was the perfect place when she saw her groom standing in the natural, picturesque surroundings. The couple would be living on 40 acres of farm land and the beautiful trees and open setting of the Sonnet House made Bobby right feel at home. 130 | Birmingham Bridal | JAN 12 Haley wore a ball gown by Lazaro and a floor length veil that added just the right amount of classic drama. Her Badgley Mishka shoes were the exact shade of purple of her bridesmaids’ dresses. Haley’s mother sewed a handkerchief for her to carry in the pocket of her wedding dress. She trimmed it with lace from her own wedding dress and had sewn Haley’s grandfather’s wedding band to it. She also stitched Haley and Bobby’s wedding date in blue. It was definitely a very meaningful something old, new, borrowed, and blue. Attending the bride were Grace Perry, matron of honor, and Bethe Dodds, maid of honor. The bride’s childhood friend, Morgan Bellew Wiggins, co-owner of Something New in Mobile, made finding the perfect dress an extra-special experience. Instead of the traditional boutonniere, a pocket square accented each groomsman’s tuxedo. The groom’s pocket square belonged to the bride’s late grandfather. A concert of organ music played by Mrs. Jody Powell and a vocal solo by Andre Chang preceded the arrival of the wedding party. The bride’s childhood pastor, Reverend Terry Richey, officiated the ceremony. Alisa Lynn Photography captured each moment. The reception took place at The Club. As guests arrived, they were offered champagne or a sweet tea vodka martini to sip as they enjoyed the breathtaking view from the terrace. Design Productions added extra sparkle to the night with a canopy of twinkling lights. Once indoors, guests were treated to a lavish array of food, including a Southern Comfort Station complete with fried green tomatoes, mini BBQ pork sandwiches, a grits bar, and fried chicken. Magic Muffins created a delicious five-tiered bride’s cake and a chocolate groom’s cake dripping with ganache. The lighted dance floor provided the perfect atmosphere for guests to dance the night away to the sounds of The Tip Tops. As the band began to play “Ring of Fire,” a favorite of the groom, the bride surprised him by changing into a custom-made short tulle skirt paired with her Monique corset and belt. Before the couple departed, guests enjoyed wedding cake martinis topped with a mini chocolate chip cookie and stopped by the couple’s signature candy bar, where they filled their bags with a variety of sweet treats.
