From the Pastor
Dear Friends,
Welcome to all who join us this weekend to celebrate the
Resurrection of Jesus Christ!
This Holy Week we experienced our annual encounter with the
“hinge of history.” The time before the Passion, Death and Resurrection
of Jesus was different from the time after, and the events that we have
engaged in opened up the door for a new kind of relationship with God.
The fact that so much is compressed into such a short period is
maddening for preachers, who would love to unpack in a leisurely and
methodical way the various events and themes of the week. But as it
goes, each year we are simply plunged into the intensity of it all so that
the liturgies of the week can go to work on us with little time or
opportunity for commentary.
It is Easter Sunday that draws most to church, a day when we rejoice
in the ultimate vindication: Christ’s triumph over death. This triumph,
manifested through the One who shares our nature, offers access to all
who believe to the benefits of said triumph. It is what gives us hope
when those we love have died, and allows us to approach our own death
with reverent joy and solemn expectation. Jesus’ resurrection from the
dead means that the baptized have absolutely nothing to fear, except for
sin (though we know a remedy for that is also available to us). As Saint
Paul wrote: “if Christ has not been raised then our faith is useless.” We
profess Christ’s victory over the grave every day, but on Easter this
proclamation resounds with force across the face of the earth.
It is interesting to consider how the resurrection of Jesus from the
dead seems so “second nature” to us. We are not scandalized by the
cross the way the first generation of Christians was, and we are not
particularly surprised by the resurrection. We speak of the cross and
resurrection in an almost hyphenated way. On the one hand, there is
something kind of beautiful in that. On the other, we risk losing our
sense of the radical intensity of its meaning. I pray that our celebrations
today, and throughout the coming fifty days, may fill us with a renewed
sense of awe and wonder as we encounter anew the living presence of
our Redeemer.

Take time this week to reflect
on today’s readings:
First Reading — Acts 10:34a, 37-43;
Psalm — Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23;
Second Reading — Colossians 3:1-4 or
1 Corinthians 5:6b-8;
Gospel — John 20:1-9
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared
this year a Jubilee Y ear of Mercy. Saint John Paul
II named the Second Sunday of Easter “Sunday of
Divine Mercy” in response to Saint Faustina
Kowalska’s Divine Mercy devotion, which offered
spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis
challenges us to make that comfort we receive a
gift we gladly share: “We are called to show
mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.”
The clearest expression of merciful love, says
Francis, is pardoning others. “At times how hard it
seems to forgive!” he acknowledges. “And yet
pardon is the instrument placed into our fragile
hands to attain serenity of heart” (Misericordiae
Vultus, 9). The necessary condition for living
joyfully? “To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and
revenge.” May Divine Mercy Sunday in this
Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made
mercy our life’s ideal and a criterion for our faith’s
credibility: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will
be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7).

Ascension School still has openings in most grades for the 2016-2017 school year. Our outstanding,
Blue Ribbon School offers classes for children aged 3 by September 1 through grade 8. Our excellent
Kindergarten offers parents the flexibility of a full-day program or a half-day morning
option. Parents can take advantage of a “home away from home” by enrolling in an affordable
Extended Day Program which is open from 7AM to 6PM all school days. Ascension School has a
wonderful community spirit, a strong Catholic identity, rich tradition in the fine arts, and a strong
academic curriculum.
All of our current 8th grade students have been accepted into the high schools of their choice,
including St. Ignatius, Fenwick and Trinity. Alumni have gone on to some of the nation’s top
universities, such as Harvard, Yale, Notre Dame and Georgetown. Call 708-434-1558 to arrange a

Happy Easter!
—Children’s Lenten Project—
Pay for Play:
building playgrounds
in Guatemala
We are now collecting your Lenten boxes to
help the children of Guatemala.
Please be
generous in helping these children have a better
quality of life. The goal of this project is $10,000
which will help build four playgrounds in
Guatemala. We have a terrific start in the three
events where the proceeds are entirely benefitting
this project. The Children’s Mardi Gras, the Feb.
19 Fish Fry and the March 4 Fish Fry contributed
$2,880.26 in total net proceeds from the events.
Thank you to all who attended these events to
make them so successful! Thank you for your
generosity.
We encourage you to return your Rice Bowl
contribution in the collection basket, to one of
the ushers or bring it to the parish office in the
next few weeks.
Thank you for being so
generous in this Lenten almsgiving project.
—Blood Drive—
Sunday, April 10th
"The Lord is Risen" and we are glad!
Imagine the excitement family members will
feel when their sick relative is getting better
because of some stranger's generous donation of
their life giving blood. Remember, blood cannot be
made, it can only come from healthy donors who
are willing to gift others. Will you be one of our 40
donors on April 10th?
Please call the Parish Office, 708-848-2703, or
go online to register: heartlandbc.org. Keep in
mind, we love walk-ins who come during Mass
times: 9 and 11 am. The drive ends at 12:15 p.m.

"Create A Clean Heart:
Defeating the Poison of
Pornography in our Parishes and
in our Culture."
St. Luke Parish in River Forest is sponsoring
this one day conference based on a document
that the USCCB published on it in November.
The conference is a pastoral response to the
terrible affliction of pornography that poisons
families, marriages, youth, and many people in
our parishes and the world.
While this
conference will of course address the spiritual
problems of porn, but it will especially explore
the "brain science" of porn use in ways lay
people can understand so people can find
deliverance and healing from this habit or
addiction.
The conference is especially attractive to
catechists, youth ministers, teachers, pastoral
associates, counselors, pre-cana couples and
presenters, DREs, people who can also help
minister to others, etc. The conference makes
the Church the Field Hospital of hope, healing,
and new life that Pope Francis calls for in this
Year of Mercy.
The conference is on Saturday, April 2nd.

Ascension Sunday Mass on the Radio
Ascension has been invited to record our weekly Sunday Mass (sometimes the 9 am, sometimes
the 11 am) for a 6 pm re-broadcast on WPNA Radio 1490AM, just prior to the Doris Davenport
Show. In order to do this we need a volunteer (or more than one) who can manage the CD recording
equipment in the sacristy, and then do some basic computer editing to create a one-hour program
that can be delivered (or emailed) to the station by 2:30 in the afternoon. This could be an adult, or
even a responsible high school or college-age student. For more information please contact Fr.
Hurlbert at the parish center.
