exist. Sawmills, construction, summer camps,
tourism and many small businesses including
crafts, gifts, antiques, machine shops, resorts, a
winery, art gallery and a variety of other retail
and service businesses fuel the economy.
Naples
The “heart” of the Lakes Region. Naples Village is easily accessible on Route 302. At
the eastern end of the Causeway, a swinging
bridge spans Chute River, the shortest river in
the area and the connection between Long
Lake and Brandy Pond. Rides on the Songo
River Queen Paddleboat, six campgrounds,

as Roosevelt Trail, and offers a sidewalk extending from Raymond Beach to Windham.
Raymond is the home of three beaches, two
which the general public may access. There
are also two boat launches, five ponds and
two lakes for your water adventures. The
Sheri Gagnon Memorial Park, Panther Run
Picnic Area, several hikes, an indoor “walk
for health” program and mountain bike trails
at Morgan Meadows enhance the outdoor
activities in Raymond. Over 4,000 people reside in the 41 square

Art and culture are very much alive in Harrison due to Baked Bean Recording Studio,
Deertrees Theater and Cultural Center, The
Backstage Gallery at Deertrees and several
other studios. Whether it’s learning to dance at
The Ballroom, taking karate lessons, ice skating
on Long Lake, playing at The Field of Dreams,

construction, home businesses, retail shops
and a variety of service industries form the
business sector of the community.
Lovell
Lovell is located on Route 5. With almost every
road bearing the word “Hill” in the name,
you have an idea of the terrain of this area.
And from those hills, the view of the White
Mountains is spectacular. There are several
hikes for all abilities, two libraries, six ponds,
two public boat launches, five sites on the
National Register of Historic Places, including
10
“A Peaceful Village.” Located along Routes
35, 37 and 118, the three villages of Waterford are nestled in the rolling hills of western
Maine. With two public beaches, three boat
accesses, six ponds, Crooked River, Mud Pond
fen and Keoka Lake, there is plenty to do on
the water in Waterford. Three hikes, one of
those for experienced rock climbers, two public
parks, two museums, a pottery studio, two
campgrounds, and twenty-three buildings on

Sebago
The village of Sebago is located on the western shore of Sebago Lake, named by Native
American’s because it is a “great lake” or “big
lake,” at eight miles wide and eleven miles
long. Four other ponds, a mountain trail and
plenty of space for other hikes, senior meals
every Tuesday at noon, two campgrounds, a
library, the Sebago Historical Society Museum,
town gym available for rent and a building
on the National Register of Historic places all
make Sebago a great place to live.
Club and Project Joy. Denmark children attend
Brownfield-Denmark Elementary School until
grade 6. For the remainder of their school
years they attend middle and high school in
Fryeburg. Education, tourism, construction,
boating and camping, service and retail trade
create the economy of Denmark.
Fryeburg
Special events include Maine Maple Sunday
including the annual pancake breakfast and
Sebago Days events.
Making their homes in Sebago’s 40 square
miles are about 1,500 people. Education starts
at Sebago Elementary School. From 7th-12th
grade, students attend Lakes Region Middle,
High and Vocational Schools. Clubs and
organizations include Scouts, Friends of the
Spaulding Library, Parent/Teacher Club, Ladies
Circle, Sebago Volunteers, Sebago Community
Fire Company, 4-H, Long Beach Community Association, Maple Grove Grange, Sebago Days

book discussion group and the Sebago Branch
Duckers Snowmobile Club. Local employment
includes auto and engine repair shops, building and excavating, farms, marinas, summer
camps, logging and sawmills, education, tourism and antique and specialty shops.
Denmark
Located on Route 117, Denmark sits at the
southern end of Moose Pond, beneath the
shadow of Pleasant Mountain. There are at
least four trails up Pleasant Mountain from
Denmark locations. Though there is one
town operated public boat launch at Moose
Pond, the state of Maine maintains launches
at the other three large ponds in town. The
Denmark Public Library, Denmark Municipal
Building and Kate Sanborn Memorial Field,
Denmark Arts Center and Historical Society
and Denmark Community Church plus a few
small businesses create the center of town. Of
special note is the fact that in 1901, Camp
Wyonegonic, on Moose Pond, was the first
children’s camp to open in Maine.
Special events include the Sheep Fest, July
4th parade, the Lion’s Club Annual Bean Hole
Supper and their fall Turkey Shoot.
Over 1,000 people reside in the 48 square
miles of Denmark. The residents participate in
activities at the library and Denmark Arts Center, recreation program, Denmark Historical
Society, Lion’s Club, The Draggers Snowmobile
Brownfield
Though located only a few miles south of
Fryeburg on Route 160, Brownfield feels like
it’s a million miles away. Mountains, forest and
the Saco River are the dominate features in
this town that has been rebuilt since the forest
fires of 1947. Several hikes, canoeing on the
Saco River, swimming at Burnt Meadow Pond,
enjoying the quiet of Brownfield Bog or the
other ponds and rivers in the area are all free
outdoor activities. Children enjoy story time,
the summer reading program or after school
activities at the public library or the playground
at Dunn Memorial Park behind the municipal
building. The arts are alive through the efforts
of Stone Mountain Arts Center, Saco River
Pottery, Burnt Meadows Frame Shop and other
home studios in the area.
Special events include the Brownfield Fire
Department’s Turkey Shoot in November and
Brownfield Days held each August.
Located on the Saco River and New Hampshire
border, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in Fryeburg. The oldest
town in Oxford County, Fryeburg is home to
Hemlock Covered Bridge, several easy hiking
trails, miles of snowmobile trails, Fryeburg
Academy, twelve public parks, two public
beaches, three public boat launches, two museums, two campgrounds, an active recreation
department, two playgrounds, a dance school,
bowling and simulated golf at Saco Valley
Sports Center, an outdoor ice rink, eleven buildings on the National Register of Historic Places
and Eastern Slopes Regional Airport.
Special events include Fryeburg Academy’s
Black Fly Festival, Lee and Joan Day Memorial Car Show, Memorial Day and July Fourth
parades, Beautification Plant Sale, summertime
concerts at the Bradley Park Gazebo, Maine
Street Festival arts and crafts fair and Fryeburg
Fair, Maine’s Blue Ribbon Classic.
With 60 square miles and a year-round
population of just over 3,000, Fryeburg offers
residents plenty of space to roam. Clubs and
organizations include SCOOPS--a local motorcycle group that rides to ice cream shops each
week, Fryeburg Area Rotary Club, Lion’s Club,
Eastern Star and Masons, Bridge Club, Scouts,
Fryeburg Senior Citizens, and the Interstate
Sno-goers Snowmobile Club. Though there are
trails throughout town and beside the river, if
you are using a 4-wheeler or skiing, it is best
to ask for landowner’s permission. Elementary
through high school education takes place at
the public schools in Fryeburg and the New Life
Christian Academy. Farms including potatoes
and turf, light manufacturing, retail stores,
canoe and camp industry, tourism, education,
antique, gift and specialty shops and the building industry influence Fryeburg’s economy.
12
About 1,250 people live in the 42 square miles
of Brownfield. They keep busy participating
in the Lion’s Club, Masons, Burnt Meadow
Snowmobile Club, Brownfield Historical
Society, Scouts, and young adult and adult
book clubs at the library. Students begin their
education at Brownfield-Denmark Elementary
School and then attend middle and high school
in Fryeburg. There is also a Timber Frame
school in town. The local economy is boosted
by the efforts of light manufacturing, small
retail businesses, construction, tourism, home
businesses and agriculture.
Stow
Located on Route 113, fifteen minutes from
Fryeburg and thirty minutes from Bridgton,
Stow is the gateway to the White Mountain
National Forest through Evans Notch. Scenic
drives, breathtaking mountain views, clear
lakes and streams, wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, fishing,
hunting, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, mountain biking,
canoeing and bird watching all make Stow
a special place.
With only 312 people in the 23 square miles
of Stow, there just might be a larger horse
population. Students attend school in Fryeburg. Stow’s most notable event was the July 1993
discovery of a 9-pound amethyst crystal at
privately-owned Eastman Mine on Deer Hill.
Though that mine is off-limits to the public, for a
fee you may acquire a permit to a mine on the
east side of Deer Hill and spend the day looking
for amethyst, tourmaline and other rocks.

Sweden
Tucked into the rolling hills between Lovell,
Bridgton and Waterford, Sweden is only a
short distance from any where, but feels like
another world. A quiet town, Sweden is known
for its country roads, stone walls and scenic vistas. A new post and beam town office, Sweden
Historical Society, Blacksmith Shop Museum
in the old school house, Town Meeting House
and Sweden Community Church are located
near the crossroads of Route 93, Waterford
Road and Plummer Road. Five ponds, including the northern end of Moose Pond, provide
opportunities for small boat activities. Public
boat launches are available at Keyes Pond
and Stearns Pond and there is a public beach
at Keyes (rhymes with “eyes”).
About 325 people make their homes in the
29 square miles of Sweden. Educational opportunities are through MSAD 72 in Fryeburg.
Residents participate in recreational events
offered by surrounding towns. Two seasonal
residential camps and agriculture aid the
economy of the town.

“Since play is a fundamental need, playgrounds
should be provided for every child as much as
schools.”—Theodore Roosevelt
Playgrounds and beaches provide children an opportunity to have fun, make friends, get exercise
and be physically challenged. Playground equipment
expands their creativity as they discover ancient
worlds, explore outer space or take imaginary journeys to far-off lands. From building sand castles to
swimming, the fun and benefits of time spent at the
beach are also endless. There are playgrounds and
beaches scattered throughout the Greater Bridgton
Lakes Region Area for your enjoyment. And while you
are at it, pack your picnic basket, grab a blanket and
rediscover the boundless joy of eating in the great
outdoors. Keep it simple and remember not to litter.

Hiking, Walking, and Biking in the
Greater Bridgton Lakes Region
Getting outdoors often will result in a general better feeling, overall
confidence, increased ability to work, increased strength, decreased
stress level, clearer mind, overall improved health, better weight control
and a whole lot of new friends. In the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region
Area there are plenty of places to explore on foot or by bike and get in
touch with nature. Remember that as you hike, walk and bike, you are
often on privately-owned land. Be respectful. Leave no trace behind.
And don’t forget to wear comfortable socks and shoes and bring your
own water.
The easily accessible Stevens Brook Trail begins at Highland Lake and
follows the brook past numerous former mill sites to Long Lake. Soon,
Pondicherry Park will be accessible from this trail system. Pleasant
Mountain trailheads are located in Bridgton, Denmark and Fryeburg.
The degree of difficulty is moderate. Thanks to the efforts of Loon Echo
Land Trust, all trails are well-marked. Kiosks provide information. Trails
include Bald Peak in Bridgton, The Ledges and Southwest Ridge Trail in
Denmark and the Fire Warden’s Trail in Fryeburg. Holt Pond and Bald
Pate are easy hikes located in South Bridgton. For an entirely flat walk,
the Narrow Gauge Trail extends from South Bridgton to Denmark. More
easy walks can be enjoyed at Mayberry Hill Preserve and Quaker Ridge
Sanctuary in Casco as well as Sebago Lake State Park in Naples. For a
short climb with a great view, try Jockey Cap in Fryeburg. A somewhat
longer, but easy hike in Fryeburg is Mount Tom. In Raymond, people
enjoy walking along the new sidewalk system from on Route 302 or hiking in Morgan Meadow. Rattlesnake Mountain is an easy Raymond hike
that offers views of Sebago Lake. Sebago Elementary School’s Nature
Trail is a quiet respite beside the Northwest River, while the easy hike up
Douglas Mountain offers a 360 view from the stone tower. Mt. Tir’em and
Hawk Mountain in Waterford are two easy hikes that can be attempted
in the same day. A bit more challenging are the Brownfield hikes at
Burnt Meadow Mountains and Peary Mountain. Lovell offers either a
walk through Bradley and Heald Ponds Preserve, Sucker Brook Preserve
or Wilson’s Moose Pond Bog and easy/moderate hikes up Sabbatus
Mountain and Lord Hill and the Mines. Hikes of moderate difficulty that
begin in Stow include Little and Big Deer Hill, Shell Pond, Conant Trail,
Horseshoe Trail and Streaked Mountain. An indoor walking program
is available at Lake Region High School in Naples.
Bicycling in the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Area means narrow
shoulders and hilly routes, but the network of country roads will take
you through quintessential New England as you pass old stone walls,

ride down maple-lined roads, and past river, lake or mountain views.
Many routes can be found by circling lakes in the area. These back
roads offer an opportunity to ride past orchards, farms and old mill
sites, with plenty of hills to climb. Rides include around Highland Lake
and Stearns Pond in Bridgton and Sweden, Long Lake in Naples, Harrison and Bridgton, Kezar Pond in Lovell, Lovewell Pond and Pleasant
Pond in Fryeburg and Denmark, Moose Pond in Bridgton and Denmark,
Keoka Lake and McWain Pond in Waterford, Pleasant Lake in Casco
and Crescent Lake and Panther Pond in Raymond. For a ride through
Fryeburg, check fryeburgmaine.org and click on the bike map. An
Evergreen Valley ride in Stow is a 12-mile out-and-back on Deer Hill
Road, an unpaved Forest Service road. Or try the Cold River Valley in
Stow. The Boston Hills in Denmark and Morgan Meadow in Raymond
offer a mountain bike experience. For a less strenuous workout, and one
that’s fun for younger children, try the Fryeburg Fairgrounds, though not
during fair week. Sebago Lake State Park in Naples is another place
for beginners and more advanced riders. Always remember to wear
your helmet when riding.

Boat Launches
We all love clean water. It only takes one boater to do immeasurable damage to our vulnerable ponds and
lakes. Invasive water plants, such as milfoil, are spread by boats, which pick them up at one infested lake
and carry them to another. Boat wash stations are available at some boat launch sites in the Greater Bridgton
Lakes Region Area. And Courtesy Inspectors are often on hand to help inspect boats for plants. All launch sites
include signs explaining the need for such inspections. After you’ve checked that your gas tank is full, your
lunch is packed and your gear is stored, please check and remove any vegetation from your boat.

LAKES BIATHLON
The Olympics Come to the Lakes Region
Bi means two and -athlon means contest. A biathlon, therefore, is the combination of the
two physically challenging sports of cross-country skiing and precise rifle marksmanship.
The first is fast, intense and physically demanding, while the latter requires accuracy and
control--not easy with a pounding heart and heaving chest. During a competition, competitors must ski a specified distance as quickly as possible, approach the stadium, discard
ski poles, take a prone or standing position on a mat, steady a .22-caliber biathlon rifle,
control breathing, site the gun at a target 50 meters down range, pull the trigger and shoot.
For each shot missed, either time is added or the skier must ski a penalty loop.
Maine’s Nordic skiing heritage dates back to the late 1870s when Governor Joshua Chamberlain recruited 21 families from Stockholm, Sweden to
help settle northern Maine. They brought their skiing tradition with them and skied for transportation, hunting and recreation. Though it remains a
somewhat obscure sport, the folks at Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) are working to bring Biathlon into the limelight. This group is dedicated
to “re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine.” Their mission is to address the devastating health issues facing our youth population. One way they
do this is by making skiing accessible to as many communities as possible. This past year they expanded their horizons by offering biathlon clinics
and competitions during the winter and summer for middle and high school students in southern Maine and have recently created the Southern
Maine Biathlon Club.
So . . . can’t wait till Vancouver 2010 for the Winter Olympics? Never fear. The Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with MWSC and with Poland Spring as sponsor, will bring the first annual Lakes Biathlon to Five Fields Farm on Sunday, January 20, 2008,
as part of the Winter Carnival festivities. The Chamber, looking for a way to expand Winter Carnival, which now includes a Mushers Bowl held at
Five Fields Farm Cross-Country Ski Center in South Bridgton, needed an event that could occur during the second weekend and wasn’t necessarily
snow dependent. Tom Gyger of Five Fields Farm will tell you that it was not his idea, but travel the trail with him and you’ll know he is passionate
about the prospect of providing a venue for this Olympic style event. The spectacular terrain of this area lends itself to recreational sports. LEA, LELT
and Tom would like to develop the area into multi-use trails that could host activities that can’t happen anywhere else in southern Maine.
The Lakes Biathlon will provide an opportunity to try skiing laps and shooting air rifles at targets. A clinic will begin at 10:00 a.m., where novices
can learn shooting techniques. Participants will be coached in shooting air rifles, in both prone and standing positions, as well as the finer points
of strategizing a successful race. Informal cross-country races will
follow. Typically, at a MWSC biathlon event, competitors start at
specified intervals, ski a loop, return to the stadium to shoot five
rounds at a metal knock-down target, ski another loop, return to
the stadium to shoot five more rounds and then ski a final loop. For every target missed, the skier must complete a penalty loop.
If there is a lack of snow, unless it is sheer ice, the competition
can quickly become a run and shoot event, similar to the summer
biathlon.
Whether you are a recreational skier, an elite racer, or an enthusiastic onlooker, the Lakes Biathlon promises to be an exciting
event to participate in or to watch. The range, parking area and
viewing will take place at Fryers’ Field on Fosterville Road. Skiing will be on the lower portion of Five Fields Farm and Watkins
Field, owned by LELT.

Gems in the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region
Visit our towns and villages and enjoy the wealth
of sightseeing treats they offer. Natural beauty,
outdoor recreation and historic sites highlight our
area. Take time to investigate spectacular gems
such as these on your next visit to the Greater
Bridgton Lakes Region Area. Along the way you’ll
discover more gems as you travel the roads and
meet the people who live and play here.
Butterfly Garden The Lakeside Garden Club
created a Butterfly Garden complete with a variety of shrubs, perennials and annuals necessary
for shelter and nectar at the Greater Bridgton
Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Information Center. The garden includes a dry river bed
and a sign explaining the habitat as well as the
metamorphosis of butterflies. More information
is available in the Information Center.

Lewis Dana Hill Memorial Library Our
villages are full of quaint, old-fashioned libraries
such as the Lewis Dana Hill Memorial Library in
North Lovell. Step into the foyer of this former
one-room schoolhouse and step back in time.
Though the collection isn’t large, current best
sellers, both fiction and non-fiction, large print
books, videos and audio tapes are available. A
small children’s room is located near the foyer
and antique signs are displayed in the front
room. This historical and pleasantly surprising
library offers something for everyone, including
a friendly atmosphere. The hours are limited, but
it’s worth a visit.
Casco Fire Department’s Casco Days
Advertised as “always the last Saturday in July,”
Casco Days actually begins when the midway
opens at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008.
The first Casco Days celebration was held in
1937 and was sponsored by the Casco High
School Alumni Association. Today the Casco Fire
Department sponsors the events. Several weeks
prior to Casco Days, they piece together the red
wooden frame work of the midway games. Food
is cooked and served in the barn at the back of
Casco Days Park. Volunteers from a number of local organizations work as the “carnies.” Special
events include fireworks, a road race, children’s
parade, and Grand parade, which bring family,
friends and campers together for a homemade,
hometown event.
Waterford Flats Historic District Sit on a
park bench in the village green and look across
at the home of Artemus Ward, pen name of Waterford native, Charles F. Brown, who was Mark
Twain’s mentor. Step into the Waterford Library,
designed by John Calvin Stevens and son, John
Howard Stevens. Or envision the ladies sitting
on one side of the room facing their men on the
other side during town meeting at the Old Town
34
Office and Meeting Hall in Waterford Flats. Of
course, the ladies were not allowed to vote and
had to keep quiet--surely an impossible task.
Twenty-one buildings are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Songo Locks The Songo Locks connect Sebago
Lake to Brandy Pond and Long Lake. Originally
there were 27 locks between Long Lake and
the Atlantic Ocean. Songo Locks, constructed
in 1830, is the only remaining one of the Cumberland-Oxford Canal. Today, it continues to be
hand-operated, usually between May 1st and
October 15th. Pass through Songo Locks on your
own boat or take a ride on the replica Mississippi
stern paddle wheeler, Songo River Queen’s, two
and a half hour river trip.
Denmark Bicentennial Park The soothing
sound of water flowing over the dam at the
foot of Moose Pond greets visitors at Denmark
Bicentennial Park on Main Street. Fish near the
dam, canoe or kayak from the park, play on the
grass, picnic under the shelter or ice skate on the
pond--all are possibilities in this easily accessible
public green space in village of Denmark. Deertrees Theatre and Cultural Center
Built of hemlock in an Adirondack Style, the
Deertrees Theatre and Cultural Center in Harrison, first opened its doors in 1936. Today
the theatre offers an eclectic schedule of events
for young and old from late June until early
September. Broadway stars and local would-be
actors as well as world-acclaimed musicians
and aspiring students have graced the stage of
Deertrees Theater.
Hemlock Bridge Built in 1857, of Paddleford
truss construction with supporting laminated
wooden arches, Hemlock Bridge in Fryeburg is
a quaint and charming reminder of days gone
by. The 109-foot long covered bridge spans the
old course of the Saco River. Though reinforced
in 1988 so you can drive across the bridge, it’s
more fun to walk across. Take time to admire
the work of our forefathers, peer at the river and
read the graffiti on Maine’s oldest remaining
covered bridge.
Frances Howe Murals Tucked away in the
rear of the first floor of the historic Wales and
Hamblen building on Main Street in Bridgton
are the Frances Howe murals, considered to be
Rufus Porter’s finest work. Painted in 1838, the
murals were rescued from the Howe home in
Massachusetts prior to its demolition in 1965.
They are the only murals known to be signed by
both Rufus Porter and his son, Stephen Twombly
Porter. More information is available at the Rufus
Porter Museum in Bridgton.
