2013 Area Guide The Greater Bridgton lakes region Imagine Us in Any Season... Visit Us in All of Them! www.mainelakeschamber.com 2013 Area Guide www.mainelakeschamber.com 2013 Area Guide Welcome Dear Residents and Visitors, Our legacy of hospitality dates back to the late 1800s when people traveled by Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Cumberland and Oxford Canal to the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region. It was here where they and their friends enjoyed clean lakes, refreshing swims and excellent fishing. The Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce proudly serves the towns of Bridgton, Brownfield, Casco, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Lovell, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Stow, Sweden and Waterford. In these towns you’ll find the bucolic charm that drew those early visitors to northern New England, mixed with modern conveniences and amenities. Today, the region is still a year-round vacation destination offering travelers a selection of bed and breakfasts, inns, cottages, cabins and camps, motels, resorts and campgrounds. Whether you are a resident, vacationer or just passing through, everything you need is right here. From the pristine lakes and scenic vistas to one-ofa-kind museums, historical sites, theatrical performances, art galleries, unique dining and shopping opportunities, the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region has something for everyone. The natural beauty of the area enhances all the fun-filled activities that are available, including hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, golfing, hunting, snowmobiling and skiing. What made this area popular over a century ago still holds true. Visitors often comment about how welcome they feel and how much they appreciate the relaxing lifestyle. We sincerely hope you’ll enjoy your stay. If we can be of any assistance, please let us know. Sincerely, Jim Mains Executive Director The Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce takes a leadership role in promoting the Lakes Region and local businesses through the many services it offers our members and the community. From the Naples Causeway, cruise the beautiful waters of Long Lake and enjoy the inspiring lakeside scenery and panoramic mountain views. Experience the exhilaration of the outdoors, the abundant waterfowl and the natural beauty that is the Lakes Region—all while relaxing aboard the Songo River Queen II, a replica of the riverboats that traveled down the mighty Mississippi River. The twin-decked, 93-foot Songo River Queen II has been one of the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region’s most popular and unique attractions since the first boat was launched in 1971. Unfortunately, she burned at the dock in 1981, —continued on page 12 10 www.mainelakeschamber.com 2013 Area Guide 11 The Songo River Queen II but the second boat was built that winter and set sail on Memorial Day, 1982. The Queen is reminiscent of the romance and adventure of the grand riverboats from the 1880s. True to tradition, her only means of propulsion is the twin paddle wheels in the stern. As the Queen cruises along, your captain will provide you with historical facts and point out local features. The Queen’s covered upper deck offers cool summer breezes and unobstructed sightseeing. The enclosed lower level, heated in the fall, is surrounded by windows offering stunning views of Long Lake. Cruises range from narrated sightseeing tours to special events and are offered from Mother’s Day to Halloween. Special events include a ‘50s cruise, ‘70s cruise, holiday cruises and Octoberfest Dinner cruise. In addition, this year may feature reggae, murder mystery and trivia nights. And always popular is the Blues Festival on Father’s Day weekend. The Queen serves as the biggest venue all three days of this event. In-season cruises occur 4-5 times daily from Father’s Day through Labor Day. Pre- and 12 www.mainelakeschamber.com post-season cruises are offered on weekends only, with one trip per day. No reservations are necessary for a public cruise. Tour lengths vary from one hour to one and a half or two hours. “The longer you’re out, the more scenery you’ll see,” says Captain/Owner Kent Uicker. The Queen is handicap accessible. A food court, cocktail bar, gift shop and bathrooms are located on the lower deck, which also features a dance floor. With seating capacity for 350, the Queen can easily accommo- 2013 Area Guide date large groups of people for weddings, corporate outings, anniversary parties, reunions, bus tours, functions, birthday parties and any other reason. When you visit Naples, plan to slow down and spend an hour or two viewing Long Lake from a different perspective. Let Captain Kent and his crew do the driving for you. Come see the sights and learn about the Lakes Region. Or jazz up your next occasion and host a private party aboard the Songo River Queen II. Arts Center—An Intimate Music Venue Since 2006 people in the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region have been getting up close and personal with performers such as Bela Fleck, The Indigo Girls and Joan Baez on the stage at Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield. Stone Mountain Arts Center is an intimate performance hall owned and operated by national recording artist and singer/songwriter Carol Noonan and her husband, Jeff Flagg. The state-of-the-art space is located up a dirt road in a renovated red clapboard, timber-framed barn. The 70’ x 30’ rustic hall features stained glass windows and a vaulted ceiling that provides exceptional acoustics. 2013 Area Guide Seating for 200 includes cabaret-style on the ground floor, reserved for diners. More seats are available in the balcony. A veteran to the music industry, Carol attracts major artists to this out of the way and out of this world place. Big names like Joan Baez love coming to SMAC, where they can create a direct relationship with their audience. Carol says, “With a purposeful 21inch high stage, there is not great distance from the audience to the performer.” From the front row, the audience can reach out and practically touch their favorite musicians, while those in the back can still make eye contact. Carol and her small staff also serve a delicious meal before each show. The menu includes culinary delights such as Love Me Tender Beef 39 Stroganoff, Harvest Stew, homemade pizza, large salads and desserts to die for. Typically doors open at 6 p.m. for dinner. The best seats are on a first come first serve basis. The kitchen closes at 7:15 and the bar closes ten minutes before show time, thus preventing interference with the performance. Though you can order tickets online and pay with a credit card, only cash or checks are accepted on site. Since opening, SMAC has hosted over 500 shows and served thousands of customers. Carol says it’s the intimate space and country hospitality that keep people returning . . . the same holds true for the performers. Following a performance in February 2007, ALTAN wrote the following: “We finished the first week of our “Spring” tour in Brownfield, Maine, to standing ovations in one of the nicest venues anywhere in the world . . . Last night we played in one of the loveliest and best-run venues ever. The Stone Mountain Arts Center is really up a very narrow mountain road in Maine, but when you get there it is the most amazing and beautiful place. The food was great, the welcome was warm and the people were amazing. Thank you, Carol, and all the people who looked after us so.” And Mary Chapin Carpenter had this to say: “If you have the chance to play at Stone Mountain Arts Center, you are one lucky musician. The audience will amaze you, the food will astound you, the accommodations will comfort you and the friendship of all who work there will enrich you.” www.mooselandingmarina.com 40 www.mainelakeschamber.com 2013 Area Guide 41 specialty shops PYO Orchards Five Fields Farm - Our family at Five Fields Farm looks forward to providing you with the finest Maine apples and an enjoyable recreational experience. This close-knit community celebrates Casco Days, always the last Saturday in July. Denmark Situated in the shadow of Pleasant Mountain at the southern end of Moose Pond, the village of Denmark is “Beautiful by Nature” and captures the essence of a rural community. The Denmark Arts Center brings people together to enjoy entertainment options, including the annual Sheep Fest, concerts, plays, workshops and independent films. —continued on page 64 Our Towns Stow Fryeburg Fryeburg is proud to be “The Oldest Town in Oxford County.” Originally called Pequawket (Pigwacket), the town is packed with history, recreational opportunities and great views of the White Mountains. Hemlock Covered Bridge and the Fryeburg Fair are among the gems found here. Harrison “The Friendly Village” of Harrison is nestled between Long and Crystal Lakes. This quaint small town is home to Deertrees Theatre and hosts Old Home Days Celebrations in July, “Back to the Past” Celebration at Scribner’s Mill in August and Christmas in Harrison in December. Stow is an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts and Maine’s gateway to Evans Notch and the White Mountain National Forest. Here you’ll discover the refreshing respite of Rattlesnake Gorge and Pool. Deer Hill Bog, a 25-acre wetland, is home to over 90 wildlife species and a wide variety of aquatic plants--it’s also perfect moose territory. Lovell Known as a summer resort since the late 1800s, Lovell’s natural beauty and peacefulness attract people to this small town stretched along pristine nine-mile Kezar Lake. An Old Home Days celebration and the annual Arts and Artisans Craft Fair are among the many community events enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Naples A picturesque village situated between Brandy Pond and Long Lake, with access to Sebago Lake via Songo River, Naples is a boaters’ paradise. The Causeway serves as the center of activity throughout the year--look for the Songo River Queen II sitting majestically at her dock, stand-up paddleboard lessons, scenic plane rides and the annual Winter Carnival and Radar Run. 62 Sebago Raymond Raymond is situated on Jordan Bay along the northeastern shore of Sebago Lake. Nathaniel Hawthorne spent part of his boyhood www.mainelakeschamber.com years from 1913 to 1925 in Raymond, where his uncle, Richard Manning, had built a home for his family. Today, along Route 302, you’ll find a paved walkway enhanced by many gardens. 2013 Area Guide Located on the western shore of Sebago Lake, several small villages make up the town of Sebago. As the state’s second largest body of water, Sebago Lake covers 45.6 square miles in surface area. While the lake is famous for landlocked salmon, Douglas Mountain offers a spectacular 360º view. Maine Maple Sunday and Sebago Days are just two of the activities residents and visitors enjoy. 63 Sweden Tucked into the rolling hills, Sweden is only a short distance from neighboring towns, but off the beaten path. Stonewalls speak of abandoned pastures, plowing for agriculture and boundary markers. The townspeople gather for special celebrations and community suppers at the town hall. Each summer, they celebrate Sweden days with a variety of activities. Waterford Traditional white clapboard houses, most of which are on the National Register of Historic Places, center around the town common in historic Waterford Flats, the quintessential center of town. Located along Routes 35, 37 and 118, the villages of Waterford are nestled into the rolling hills of western Maine. The lakes, mountains and country lanes offer breathtaking natural beauty.
