Welcome
Dear Residents and Visitors,
Our legacy of hospitality dates back to the late 1800s when people traveled by Narrow Gauge Railroad and the Cumberland and Oxford Canal to the Greater Bridgton
Lakes Region. It was here where they and their friends enjoyed clean lakes, refreshing
swims and excellent fishing.
The Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce proudly serves the towns
of Bridgton, Brownfield, Casco, Denmark, Fryeburg, Harrison, Lovell, Naples, Raymond, Sebago, Stow, Sweden and Waterford. In these towns you’ll find the bucolic
charm that drew those early visitors to northern New England, mixed with modern
conveniences and amenities.
Today, the region is still a year-round vacation destination offering travelers a
selection of bed and breakfasts, inns, cottages, cabins and camps, motels, resorts
and campgrounds. Whether you are a resident, vacationer or just passing through,
everything you need is right here. From the pristine lakes and scenic vistas to one-ofa-kind museums, historical sites, theatrical performances, art galleries, unique dining
and shopping opportunities, the Greater Bridgton Lakes Region has something for
everyone.
The natural beauty of the area enhances all the fun-filled activities that are available,
including hiking, fishing, swimming, boating, golfing, hunting, snowmobiling and
skiing.
What made this area popular over a century ago still holds true. Visitors often
comment about how welcome they feel and how much they appreciate the relaxing
lifestyle. We sincerely hope you’ll enjoy your stay. If we can be of any assistance, please
let us know.
Sincerely,
Jim Mains
Executive Director

All Aboard!
From the Naples Causeway, cruise the beautiful waters of Long Lake
and enjoy the inspiring lakeside scenery and panoramic mountain
views. Experience the exhilaration of the outdoors, the abundant waterfowl and the natural beauty that is the Lakes Region—all while relaxing
aboard the Songo River Queen II, a replica of the riverboats that traveled down the mighty Mississippi River.
The twin-decked, 93-foot
Songo River Queen II has been
one of the Greater Bridgton
Lakes Region’s most popular
and unique attractions since
the first boat was launched
in 1971. Unfortunately, she
burned at the dock in 1981,

but the second boat was built
that winter and set sail on
Memorial Day, 1982.
The Queen is reminiscent of
the romance and adventure of
the grand riverboats from the
1880s. True to tradition, her
only means of propulsion is the
twin paddle wheels in the stern.
As the Queen cruises along,
your captain will provide
you with historical facts and
point out local features. The
Queen’s covered upper deck
offers cool summer breezes and
unobstructed sightseeing. The
enclosed lower level, heated in
the fall, is surrounded by windows offering stunning views of
Long Lake.
Cruises range from narrated
sightseeing tours to special
events and are offered from
Mother’s Day to Halloween.
Special events include a ‘50s
cruise, ‘70s cruise, holiday
cruises and Octoberfest Dinner
cruise. In addition, this year
may feature reggae, murder
mystery and trivia nights. And
always popular is the Blues
Festival on Father’s Day weekend. The Queen serves as the
biggest venue all three days of
this event.
In-season cruises occur 4-5
times daily from Father’s Day
through Labor Day. Pre- and
12

post-season cruises are offered
on weekends only, with one
trip per day. No reservations are
necessary for a public cruise.
Tour lengths vary from one
hour to one and a half or two
hours. “The longer you’re out,
the more scenery you’ll see,”
says Captain/Owner Kent
Uicker.
The Queen is handicap accessible. A food court, cocktail bar,
gift shop and bathrooms are located on the lower deck, which
also features a dance floor. With
seating capacity for 350, the
Queen can easily accommo-

Stone Mountain Arts Center—An Intimate Music Venue
Since 2006 people in the
Greater Bridgton Lakes
Region have been getting
up close and personal
with performers such as
Bela Fleck, The Indigo
Girls and Joan Baez on
the stage at Stone Mountain Arts Center in
Brownfield.
Stone Mountain Arts Center
is an intimate performance
hall owned and operated
by national recording artist
and singer/songwriter Carol
Noonan and her husband,
Jeff Flagg. The state-of-the-art
space is located up a dirt road
in a renovated red clapboard,
timber-framed barn.
The 70’ x 30’ rustic hall
features stained glass windows
and a vaulted ceiling that
provides exceptional acoustics.
2013 Area Guide
Seating for 200 includes cabaret-style on the ground floor,
reserved for diners. More seats
are available in the balcony.
A veteran to the music
industry, Carol attracts major
artists to this out of the way
and out of this world place.
Big names like Joan Baez love
coming to SMAC, where they
can create a direct relationship
with their audience. Carol
says, “With a purposeful 21inch high stage, there is not
great distance from the audience to the performer.” From
the front row, the audience
can reach out and practically
touch their favorite musicians,
while those in the back can
still make eye contact.
Carol and her small staff
also serve a delicious meal
before each show. The menu
includes culinary delights
such as Love Me Tender Beef
39
Stroganoff, Harvest Stew,
homemade pizza, large salads
and desserts to die for. Typically doors open at 6
p.m. for dinner. The best seats
are on a first come first serve
basis. The kitchen closes at
7:15 and the bar closes ten
minutes before show time,
thus preventing interference
with the performance. Though you can order tickets
online and pay with a credit
card, only cash or checks are
accepted on site. Since opening, SMAC has hosted over 500 shows and served
thousands of customers. Carol
says it’s the intimate space and
country hospitality that keep
people returning . . . the same
holds true for the performers.
Following a performance in
February 2007, ALTAN wrote
the following: “We finished
the first week of our “Spring”
tour in Brownfield, Maine, to
standing ovations in one of
the nicest venues anywhere in
the world . . . Last night we
played in one of the loveliest
and best-run venues ever. The
Stone Mountain Arts Center
is really up a very narrow
mountain road in Maine, but
when you get there it is the
most amazing and beautiful
place. The food was great, the
welcome was warm and the
people were amazing. Thank
you, Carol, and all the people
who looked after us so.”
And Mary Chapin Carpenter
had this to say: “If you have
the chance to play at Stone
Mountain Arts Center, you are
one lucky musician. The audience will amaze you, the food
will astound you, the accommodations will comfort you
and the friendship of all who
work there will enrich you.”

Hemlock Covered Bridge
Built in 1857, of Paddleford
truss construction with supporting laminated wooden
arches, the Hemlock Covered
Bridge is a quaint and charming reminder of days gone
by. It spans the old course
of the Saco River. Though
reinforced in 1988 so you can
drive across, it’s more fun to
walk. Take time to admire the
work of our forefathers and
peer at the river from Maine’s
oldest remaining covered
bridge. The bridge is located
several miles in on Hemlock
Bridge Road off Route 302 in
East Fryeburg.
Hopalong Cassidy Display
The famous novelist and
short story writer, Clarence
Mulford, moved to Fryeburg
in 1926 to slow down, enjoy
life more and pursue his
hobbies, including collecting stamps and operating a
ham radio. In the foreword to
Bar-20: The Life of Clarence E.
Mulford, Creator of Hopalong
Cassidy with Seven Original
Stories, Jon Tuska writes,
“[He] was and is a pivotal
figure in the development
of the Western story in this
century.” In his will, Mulford
left the Fryeburg Women’s
Library Club the books and
most of the furnishings of his
study, plus funds to construct
a room to display some of
his collections. FMI: www.

Wooden boats have graced
the Lakes Region for many
years. With sleek, smooth

Mountainview Woodies Classic Boat Club hosts an Annual
Antique and Classic Boat
Show at the Naples Town

August. This keels and wheels
event features antique skiffs,
launches, runabouts and classic cars. The fine craftsmanship of vintage boats and cars
along with the aura of a time
gone by and the camaraderie
of the folks who share an
interest in preserving the past
is evident. The club also takes
an annual fall foliage cruise
the first weekend in October.

Narrow Gauge Railroad
Memorabilia: The design
of our chamber office at 101
Portland Road in Bridgton
replicates a train depot in
honor of the Bridgton & Saco
River Railroad, which operated on a narrow gauge for
almost sixty years and linked
Bridgton and Harrison to
the outside world. A flanger
and tank car sit on rails in
front of the office. At the
nearby Bridgton Historical

2013 Area Guide
Founded in 2005 to showcase
the folk art history of the
area, the museum emphasizes
the work of Rufus Porter. Mr.
Porter was a 19th century
entrepreneur who painted
miniature portraits, as well as
highly-prized wall murals that
still enhance houses throughout New England. Besides
being a traveling folk artist,
he was an inventor, musician, teacher and scientist.
Through collections, exhibits
and educational programs,
the museum features Porter’s
works, practical science and
other folk and decorative arts.

Scribner’s Mill
Located on Crooked River,
the Scribner’s Mill Complex
was built in 1847. Three generations of Scribners operated
it continuously until 1962. In
its heyday, the mill produced
clapboards, shingles, barrels
and lumber. The Scribner’s
Mill Preservation, Inc. formed
in 1975 with the mission to
transform it into an accurately reconstructed saw mill
powered by water. During
the annual “Back to the Past”
Celebration each August, you
can watch the machinery at
work. The lathe workshop
and the blacksmith shop
are also open. Tours of the
homestead include exhibits
and demonstrations of traditional crafts such as weaving,
spinning, rug-hooking and
quilting. The barn museum
features a self-guided tour.

Songo Lock State Historic
Site
Constructed in 1830, the
Songo Lock is the only
remaining lock of the
Cumberland-Oxford Canal.
It connects Sebago Lake to
Brandy Pond and Long Lake.
About 100 canal boats used
to make the three day journey
from Portland Harbor to Harrison, Maine. Originally there
were 27 locks between Long
Lake and the Atlantic Ocean.
Today, only the Songo Lock
remains. Beginning about
May 1st each year, the lock
is hand-operated. The water
level raises boats five feet. It
takes about 15 minutes to
pass through the lock, while
the operator closes the gates
on the upstream end and
opens the lower ones. There is
a charge to pass through the
lock and boats are inspected
for Milfoil.

the ladies were not allowed
