Appreciation Dinner Friday, August 3
Enthusiastically Serving the World
Through Christ
Volume 32, Issue 6
June 2012
————————————————————————————————————————————
Dear Parishioners:
Appreciation Dinner
Friday, August 3
St. Bart’s cannot operate
without the ministers who
are so very important—you,
the baptized members! On
Friday, August 3, we will be
having an appreciation dinner in your honor to thank
you for your faithful service
as ministers in this congregation.
Who is invited? Anyone
who does any service for the
congregation: Altar Guild,
Food Pantry, Choirs, Office
Workers, Yard and Building Maintenance, Ushers,
Acolytes, LEMs, LEVs, Lectors, Outreach, CMONA,
Master’s Soup Kitchen,
Youth workers, Sunday
School Teachers, Stephen
Ministers, Pastoral Care.
This is only a partial list. If
you help the ministry of this
parish in any capacity—we
want you there! Save the
date, Friday – August 3!
More details will appear in
next month’s Scroll.
Most of you know that David Neches resigned as our Music Minister
in order to teach full-time in the Richmond County School District
and to pursue other musical and personal interests. David’s thirteen
years here have been very fruitful and fulfilling. His great musical
talents and creative energy will be greatly missed, and I know that
all of us wish him well as he continues on to new challenges. David
will be with us through mid- July.
I want to reassure everyone that we are quickly putting together a
search committee that will help us envision our future music ministry as well as help us craft a new job description or descriptions. I
write it this way because it may be very difficult to find one person
who has the gifts to be able to fulfill our musical needs. We are one
of the few congregations that have both traditional and contemporary vibrant services. Additionally, we will not neglect the needs of
our handbell and children’s choirs. Church musicians are in great
demand, so we all will need to be prayerful and patient as we search
for our music minister or ministers. I firmly believe that if we are
deliberate and open to the Holy Spirit, the Spirit will lead us to the
right person or people who will help us build upon our rich musical
tradition. The congregation will be kept informed of our progress
and we will continue to solicit your advice.
Faithfully,
David Thompson Rector

Faith in Action
Thank you! Thank you! Once again our Faith in Action Sunday was a great opportunity to reach out into the
community in the name of Jesus Christ. I am thankful to our co-leaders, Patti Doughty, Shari Scott, and Rosemary Helmich, for their oversight of this mission Sunday. All of us were very excited that so many team leaders came forward to help lead many different mission projects. The day was so meaningful that it has been
requested we have monthly mission opportunities. Consequently, the Mission Committee invites parishioners
to come forward for their suggestions for different mission projects. The criteria are these:
Passionate Team Leaders who will oversee the project.
Project can be completed in one day.
Team Leaders recruit and ensure that the correct supplies are available for the mission.
Team Leaders must consult with Shari Scott, Rosemary Helmich, or David Thompson about the
project in order that it can be properly scheduled.
Team Leaders will report back to the congregation about what happened and who participated.
All projects will begin and end with prayer.
Interested? Have a mission passion? Pray, and see one of the aforementioned people, so your missionary
vision can become a reality.

David Henson
North Augusta Alzheimer’s Support Group
David Henson, our Youth Minister, is seeking ordination through the Diocese of Northern California. As
part of his preparation, David will be participating in
Clinical Pastoral Education, which focuses on how
clergy conduct pastoral care. Four days a week, from
June through mid-August, he will be working at Self
Regional Hospital as a chaplain under the direction of
the Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor. He will be
ministering to people who are in the hospital facing a
myriad of circumstances: routine procedures, lifethreatening illnesses, and/or the death of a loved one.
Each Monday, David will be at St. Bart’s working under my direction to provide additional pastoral care to
our parishioners. David will be reviewed by the supervisor and the other participants in the program. Additionally, he will be working with the youth on Sundays. As with many educational opportunities, he will
not be paid by the hospital for the services that he will
provide.
Please keep David in your prayers during the summer
because he will face many challenging situations. I
am grateful to have him on our staff, and I am excited
that he will have this opportunity to grow in faith and
grace.
GOOD NEWS! We will have a guest speaker
from the Jud. C. Hickey Center for Alzheimer’s
Care at our June meeting. Please don’t miss this
opportunity to learn about one of our many resources available to caregivers. Let us help each
other to cope with this dreadful disease!

To the Good People of St. Bart’s –
As most of you already know, I will be leaving my position as Music Director of St. Bartholomew’s.
My last Sunday will be July 15. This has been a most difficult decision to make and came only after quite a
bit of prayer and reflection. In the Fall, I will start teaching elementary music at two schools in Richmond
County. Amazingly, in 25 years of teaching, I have only taught full-time for five of those years! That time
has come once again. Some of this decision is based on financial planning considerations and some of it upon
being open to new opportunities in my musical life that are present now but might not be in the future.
It is hard to express in words how much St. Bartholomew’s has meant to me both professionally and
personally. From the very beginning, I have felt your love and acceptance, and working here has allowed me
to grow in both faith and spirituality. The friends that I have made at St. Bart’s are ones that I hope to keep for
a long time to come.
I am happy that during my tenure, our church as bloomed with music of all kinds performed by folks
who often found that they had more music in them than they realized. Music is one of God’s great gifts to us,
and if we are indeed children of God, than we are all indeed musical. My greatest joy, however, has been
working with all the people in the church but particularly the staff to create a vibrant, loving, and growing
community of faith where music is just one part of our larger ministry.
After my departure, I will join the community of St. Bart expats who just can’t stop listening to Father
David’s sermons on the Web site!
God’s Grace to all, and thank you again for thirteen wonderful years.

David Henson’s Summer
This summer, as part of the requirements for ordination, I am enrolling in a chaplaincy program at Self
Regional Hospital, Greenwood, SC. Called Clinical
Pastoral Education, the course combines academic
study of theories and styles of pastoral care with practical application in the hospital. I’ll spend the weeks
reading, discussing and writing about pastoral care,
meeting with patients in the hospital, and leading
chapel services there. The program requires 40 hours
a week for 10 weeks, including one on-call shift overnight at the hospital. I’m both nervous and excited
about its rigorous nature. Most priests and pastors
I’ve spoken with say the intensity of a CPE internship
is both memorable and transformative.
This is one of the last major requirements that my
commission on ministry in Northern California is asking me to complete (the other is passing the General
Ordination Exam in January) and this summer is the
perfect window to finish this, as it is the only free one
of medical school for Amber.
I am thankful also that the program offers a fieldwork
option in addition to the hospital duties. That means
that I’ll be able to spend one day a week in town visiting folks in our parish, a gracious balance to the hospital.
Our youth program is blessed to have dedicated parents and volunteers who are going to take the lead for
EYC this summer. Shari Scott, Molly Campbell, Annamarie MacMurray, and Allie Lehi have all offered
to keep youth groups humming. I’ll still be there
every Sunday night as well, but I wish to thank these
wonderful souls for offering to take on more work
during this time. Already we’re planning ice-skating
nights to cool off, movie nights, scavenger hunts, and
other projects for the summer.
I’m also grateful to St. Bart’s for being so supportive
of my ordination by allowing me the time to take this
CPE course. I believe deeply it will make me a better
priest one day and a better youth director immediately.
Summer Fun for Young Adults, 18-25
Kuleigh Beckett is coordinating
monthly summer events for our young
adults. The first one is Friday, June 15,
when the group will attend the Augusta
Green Jackets baseball game. Check
the Web & Facebook for more details.

July 4th Bar-B-Que
The Fourth of July is on a Wednesday this year. We will be cooking hams on Tuesday
night, July 3rd, for sale and pickup on the 4th. We need to order additional hams by June
20th, so it would help to get as much pre-sold as possible. Please see the pre-order form
below for information on orders and prices. Fill out, clip, and place on the collection plate
or in the basket available in the Narthex. More order forms and sales slips for family and
friends are available at church. This program would not be a success if we did not receive
support from the congregation in purchases, selling, cooking, packaging, and spreading
the word in the community.
We are asking that each family participate in one way or another. Opportunities range
from donating potato salad to cooking hash, roasting hams, chopping, cleaning up, etc.
Sheets for each job are posted in the Parish Hall, so please stop by and sign up early. No
help is too small, and every ounce of energy is appreciated. If you have questions, do not
hesitate to talk with me after a Service, or call me anytime.
