parishes of Litter (Castlebyiie) and Cloudulune were united
t o Fermoy, and the churches in them are served by the
Fermoy clergy. T h e Boman Catholic church is a large
and handsome cruciform structure of hewn sand stone,
with limestoue facings, with a beautiful tower and spire
erected on the west side of the north trausept. The church
is beautifull situated uear St. Colman's College, aud can
be seen at great advantage from different parts of the
town aud neighbourhood. T h e Methodist chapel, erected
in 1S20, and the Presbyterian church, built in 1837, are
small but neat buildings.

with Mallow on one side, Lismore, Cappoquin, and Yough a l on the other, are situated some of the most handsome,
picturesque, and beautiful residences of the gentry. In
t h e immediate neighbourhood of Fermoy, some of the
b e s t trout streams in Ireland are to be found, so much so
t h a t for years in advance the fishings are taken up by
strangers from different parts of t h e U r i t e d Kingdom.
T h e salmon fishery, within a mile of Fermoy, is considered the finest in Ireland, the salmon varying f r o m 15
to 40 lbs. weight. T h e Duke of Marlborough with others
of the nobility and gentry regularly r e n t portions of the
fishery up and down the river. The military barracks,
healthfully situated on the n o r t h side of t h e town, are
very handsome and extensive, and during the last few
years have been considerably enlarged, and are now capable
of accommodating about 2,500 men. William Campbell

within five minutes' walk of the two barrack gates, which

to the deep water of Queenstown, t h u s connecting th,
south of Cork (via Waterford) with England, thereby
adding to the trade of this important county. This line
if carried out, wdl make the journey to Loudon shorter bj
several hours t h a n at pre-ent. T h e uuiou workhouse
situated about a quarter of a mile east of the town, ane
erected in lh57, is a large and handsome building, auu
prettily situated. The grounds are kept in very neai
order, and the full area is from 17 to 18 acres. T h e lat.
Bev. Dr. William Adair endowed a school for teaching tin
useful branches of education. There are National aud infant
schools, and several private academies. A handsome convent lor nnns of the order of Presentation is situated on thi
brow of a hill, to the south of the town, and consists of i
centre and two wings; in one of the latter is a chapel, in tin
other a school house for girls, which is now formed into celis
and recept ion rooms. I n the year 1803 extensive new school;
were erected to accommodate GOO females, who are care
fully and gi atuitously instructed by the ladies of the estubBshment. These are situated at the extremity of tin
grounds, and are connected with the convent by a cloistei
of about 180 feet in length. There is also a convent (Oui
Lady of Loretto) situated in close proximity to the one
above mentioned. The building is very handsome am.
commodious, and commands extensive views of t h e surrounding country. I t consists of a centre and two wings,
one of which contains the chapel and apartments for the
use of the community, numbering 50, the other schools.

cost upwards of £20,000. The study hall aud tho chapel
deserve notice, the former being very handsome a n d large,
and titled up with all t h e requirements for the pupils,
whilst the latter is verv pretty and contains a handsome
marble tablet in memory of the late Rev. Mother Eucheria
Dease, by Neill of Dublin. St. Colman's College, which
is beautifully situated in close proximity to the two convents before mentioned, is a large and handsome building
of liewn sand-stone with cut lime stone facings, and is
capable of accommodating 150 students, and was erected
at a cost of £15,000. It lias a l a m e slaff of professors,
and prepares otudents for all t h e professions and universities. The professors and teachere will be found in a notice
of the College under head of Public Buildings.
Fermoy
college, which is also healthfully situated ou a hill outside
the town, was re-opened in January, 1880, by the Bev. J o h u
Berry, B.A., formerly principal of St. F a u g h n a n ' s CoUege,
Bosscarbery.
The course of instruction includes all the
branches required for the universities aud intermediate
and competitive examinations. A list of the professors and
teachers will be found under the head above referred to.
The market is held on Saturdays. Fairs are held the last
Tuesday in each month (for cattle), for pigs the Monday
previous, aud for horses the last Tuesday of every second
month. The population of the parish iu 1801 was 0,837,
and in 1871 8,010, of which last number the town contained 7.576.
UALLYHOOLY is a neat well-built village, in the parish of
its name, barony of Fermoy, ou the left bauk of the Blackwater, four miles N.w.of F e n n o y , and on the main road
from that town to Mallow, joiuiug tho domain of the E a r l
of Listowel, to whom the village belongs. The parish
church, t h e remains of a former one. and an ancient castle
of the Roches, crown t h e summit of a rock immediately
over the river, aud across which was a handsome cut-stone
bridge, with several arches, but it was entirely carried away,
like many others iu this county, by t h e flood which occured
on the night of t h e 3rd November, 1853; this bridge has,
however, been replaced by substantial wooden one. I u
the viUage are a Protestant Ppiscopal church, erecied
about 1774, which is now about being rebuilt, a neat aud
spacious Roman Catholic chapel of recent erection, a
National school, a dispensary, aud police barracks. T h e
population of the parish in 1861 was 1,129, and in 1871
J74, the village containing 263 of t h a t n u m b e r .
C L O N D U L A N E , a parish and smaU village iu the barony
of Coudons and Clangibbon, contains a parish church,
which is a small neat building, situated between two and
three miles from Fermoy. At G-L^NDULANE are the extensive

pa. ish in 18ol, 990 ; and iu 1871, 854 ; the village of Clondulane coutaiug 133 of the latter n u m b e r .
LITTER, or Castlehyde, parish, which lies contiguous to
that of 1'eruioy, is intersected by the Blackwater river, by
wuich it is divided into two nearly equal parts, The principal seat is Ca?tlehyde, beautuully situated on t o e
uorthern banks of the B.ackwater, iu the midst of a highly
picturesque and richly-wooded demesne, extending on both
sides of tue r v e r ; and within its precincts are the ivied
ruins of t h e ancient castle, which, at a former period, gave
Co the parish its name. The Protestant Episcopal c i u r c h
is a small but neat building. T h e population of the palish
in 1861 was 1,040 ; aud in 1871, 923.
K I L W O R T H , a small village, in the parish of its name,
oarony of Coudons aud Clangibbon, couuty of Cork, is 133
•uiles s.w. from Dublin, 25 N.N.E. from Coik, and betwe n
three and four from Fermoy, pleasantly situated on the
river P u n c h e o n , over which is a neat stone bridge of six
a c h e s , about a mde above its confluence with tho Blackwater. Mills fur dressing flax were, some years since,
. r e c t e l by t h e E a r l of Mountcashel for t h e advantago of
• ho industrious poor; they have since been used as llour
mills, but arc now iu ruius. Extensive corn niiUs, winch
.vere in existence before 1800, called Maryville mills, were
re-built by Lawrence Corbau, Iisq. in 1848, but are now in
possession of Patrick Duulea and Sous, who send about
2J,000 sacks of llour iuto the markets annually. There is
also one small woollen factory in the neighbourhood, which
gives employment to a limited n u m b e r of hands. Mooro
x J ark, the seat of the nobleman before mentiohed, is a
beautiful aud weil-wooded deim ue, on tho right bauk of
the river; the mansion, which commands some delightful
scenery, is a noble and spac.ous building. Castlo Cloughleagh, also seated on the banks of the Fuuchoou, affords
some fine prospects from its lofty tower.
I n the turbulent
periods with which this kingdom was inflicted it withstood
the assaults of Cromwell, to whom it subsequently surrendered.
T h e Protestant Episcopal cbnrou of Kilworth
union is an ancient structure, with a tower, the latter raised
iu 1742. The Boman Catholic church, situated a short distance from the town, is a spacious and convenient edifice.
T h e school accommodation consists of ono upon t h e
National plan, and is situated near tho (ihapol. Tho population of the parish in 1861 was 1,943 ; and in 1871, 1,410 ;
while t h a t of the town at the latter date was 6^7.
