A very busy week. Thank you to all parents who took the opportunity to be involved in some of the activities including: Open Day, St Patrick‘s Concert, Year 6 Mass, Book Parade (photos available on the School Moodle) and Book Fair. Special thank you to Mrs. Alice Withers for her coordination of the Book Fair which again was an outstanding success. ST PATRICK’S DAY: A sea of green descended upon the school yesterday as students participated in St Patrick‘s Day. All classes attended Mass in the morning in the Sacred Heart Church. In the afternoon Primary classes enjoyed time down at the Aquatic Centre whilst infant classes enjoyed some fun outside activities. Last week each year level learnt about some aspect of St Patrick‘s life or our school‘s history. They then presented their work at Assembly last week. As teachers, we value the importance of all students gaining an understanding of St. Patrick as well as an appreciation of our school‘s long and rich history. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS: Are being held this week for Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2 classes) and Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4 classes). I encourage all parents to take up the opportunity to meet with their child‘s teacher. If you have not make an appointment yet to meet with your child‘s teacher in Stage 1 or Stage 2 please contact our school Office to arrange an appointment time. Next week Middle School (Year 5 & 6) interviews will be conducted. NB: That interviews for Stage2 CM (Miss Caitlin Martin’s class) has been postponed til Week 10 (31st March—4th April) due to Miss Martin’s absence this week. STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT DAYS: Parents are advised of the following Staff Development Days (Pupil Free Days) Term 2 Monday 28th April Term 2 Friday 30th May Term 3 Monday 11th August Term 4 Monday 13th October PROCLAIM LISMORE PARENTS 2014: Proclaim Lismore is an exciting collaborative journey to enhance and strengthen the Catholic life in our schools. This year, our parents are invited to join our teachers and staff in Proclaim. I invite all parents to visit the website to learn more. http://proclaimlismore.com.au INSIGHT SRC: This year our school is partaking in an initiative along with a number of other Lismore Diocesan Schools working with a consulting organisation called Insight SRC. Essentially, it involves working together to improve effectiveness in schools through innovative school improvement strategies. Commencing next week (March 24th—April 4th) staff, students (Middle School only) and selected parents will be involved in completing ‗School Improvement Surveys’. If any parent particularly would like to complete a survey please contact our School Office. Have a good week! Brendan Ryan PRINCIPAL ROAD SAFETY MANAGEMENT PLAN REMINDER: If using Qld Rd ‘pick-up’ in the afternoon cars need to avoid queuing up onto Queensland Rd. If this occurs cars need to drive around the school boundary until parking becomes available. NEPAL FUNDRAISER GOLD COIN DONATION—THANKYOU I have just been in touch with Matrika Baral, the Principal at Viewpoint Primary School, near the Himalayas in Nepal. I was excited to tell him that Mt St Patrick Primary School raised $446 towards the purchase of uniforms for his students. He wishes to pass on his gratitude to our school for their generosity and said it will make a real difference to the children to have warm clothes in the winter and a suitable uniform in the other months. The children at Viewpoint are from an extremely poor rural community and the school relies heavily on donations to fund most aspects of their education, from buildings, resources and even a daily food program. Thank you once again, Cheryl Forrester CARITAS AUSTRALIA VISIT Cheryl Forrester & students from Viewpoint PS—Nepal Last week Helen from Caritas Australia visited our school. She spoke about where money raised through Project Compassion is used in many parts of the world. So far during Lent our school has raised $241.10 through Project Compassion boxes in the classrooms. Project Compassion runs throughout the season of Lent. Year 6 students represented our school at the Tweed Catholic Primary Schools—Catholic Schools Week Mass last Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Church MINI-VINNIES At lunchtimes on each Tuesday, interested middle school people have been gathering in the Art Room to find out about Mini-Vinnies. Later on this term, or early next term those who have decided that they want to be part of this social justice group, will take part in a commitment ceremony at a parish Mass on Friday. We will be doing various fundraisers during the year, but at the moment we are exploring ways, besides fundraising, that we can bring justice about in our circle of influence (e.g. on the playground, on the bus). One of our main efforts involves collecting used stamps and sending them to the Sisters of St Joseph in Sydney, who then clean them and sell them to stamp collectors around the world! So if you have any used stamps at home we would like them. Just send them into your child‘s class and MiniVinnies will do the rest! The ‗Assist-A-Student‘ programme, whereby a child in an underdeveloped country is sponsored to go to school for a year for $70, is something the Mini-Vinnies Group does on a regular basis. Last year we assisted two students in Fiji, Immanuel Waqanivere, Year 4, Virisila Natuirtuba, Year 6, thanks to Mini-Vinnies 2013.
