Year 12 References and Exit Statements
Year 12 students’ references and exit statements will be available from the college from the
morning of Friday 29 November. Students who have outstanding fees or library books will not
be able to receive their reference or exit statements until these matters are resolved.
Year 12 students driving
Local police have indicated that there will be a strong law enforcement presence in both
marked and unmarked cars on Friday and over the next weeks to ensure safe behaviour of
school leaver drivers. High spirits that can accompany significant moments such as leaving
school for the last time should not play out in behaviour driving vehicles. We want all our
young people to be safe. We remember recent years where three students from a neighbouring
town died in a single vehicle accident the day after graduation. We do not want this to
happen. Police will be doing everything in their power to keep our young people safe. Parents
and students alike are asked to support the police in this.
Year 11 exams and Leadership Week
In the last week of school after completion of their exams Year 11 students will take part in
leadership activities a significant part of which is the election of college leaders for 2014. The
week culminates with the Year 11 Semi Formal being held at the Andergrove Tavern.
Attendance at the semi formal is conditional on satisfactory attendance at all activities in
Leadership Week. That is students will not be allowed to attend the Semi Formal if they do not
attend the activities in Leadership Week.
Parties and Young People
Hosting parties for people who are underage is a high risk activity and I remind parents of the
legal obligations and issues that can surround such events. All parties should be registered with
the police and should be closed. Attached to this newsletter I have included an article that
discusses legal implications of parties especially when there is alcohol present (Page 7).
On Tuesday Mr Jerry Abrahams did an excellent presentation with our students regarding
sexual health and drugs and alcohol.
I refer families to some excellent publications of the Queensland Police Service which discuss
legal implications for young people and alcohol and drugs, and parties:

Lesley Fraser – Assistant to the Principal: Religious Education
There will be mixed feelings as we experience the graduation of our senior students on Friday.
It is a time that can be filled with sadness for what we leave behind and joy in anticipation of
the future. These young people, while receiving much have also given much and have helped
shape the spirit which is uniquely St Patrick’s. Each year, students speak of the challenges which
their final year has brought, the assignment preparation, the grappling with new concepts, the
exams, the unknowing of all that the future will bring, but, they also speak of the joys of the
year. The sense of fulfilment, the support from family, friends and teachers. The new and
stronger friendships forged, sometimes in the cauldron of powerful life challenges. Some of
these significant milestones for our Year 12 students will be celebrated with their final college
assembly and Graduation Mass. We all look forward to these celebrations and the opportunity
to bid these fine young people farewell. I speak for all the teachers at St Patrick’s when I say
that we have faith in our Year 12 students that after many years of Catholic Education, they
too, have a belief in God, the goodness of humanity and hope for the future.
In his stirring homily at the final World Youth Day Mass in Madrid, Pope Benedict issued a
challenge to the young people of today, a challenge which is offered to all who have
graduated and are moving to a new stage in their lives ....
Dear young friends, as the Successor of Peter, let me urge you to strengthen this
faith which has been handed down to us from the time of the Apostles. Make
Christ, the Son of God, the centre of your life. But let me also remind you that
following Jesus in faith means walking at his side in the communion of the
Church. We cannot follow Jesus on our own. Anyone who would be tempted
to do so “on his own”, or to approach the life of faith with kind of
individualism so prevalent today, will risk never truly encountering Jesus, or will
end up following a counterfeit Jesus.
Having faith means drawing support from the faith of your brothers and sisters,
even as your own faith serves as a support for the faith of others. I ask you, dear
friends, to love the Church which brought you to birth in the faith, which helped
you to grow in the knowledge of Christ and which led you to discover the
beauty of his love. Growing in friendship with Christ necessarily means
recognizing the importance of joyful participation in the life of your parishes,
communities and movements, as well as the celebration of Sunday Mass,
frequent reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, and the cultivation of
personal prayer and meditation on God’s word.
Friendship with Jesus will also lead you to bear witness to the faith wherever
you are, even when it meets with rejection or indifference. We cannot
encounter Christ and not want to make him known to others. So do not keep
Christ to yourselves! Share with others the joy of your faith. The world needs
the witness of your faith, it surely needs God.
In the spirit of Pope Benedict’s challenge, we invite our graduating students to reflect upon and
make his words their own. “I am with you always…to the end of time.”
Year 11 Leadership Week
We lead by walking with others – Leadership week represents an opportunity to take time to
look towards the year ahead as seniors and to discover the meaning of leadership, to consider
role models of leadership, to practice the skills of leadership and to plan for the year’s events.
At the end of Leadership week on Friday 29 November we hold a Christmas Liturgy with the
students and traditionally they give to the Christmas Appeal for the St Vincent de Paul Society.
If you can help by sending in canned goods, toys, Christmas cakes, bon bons or any other
goods that might help a family at Christmas time – we would be grateful.
A reminder to the Year 11 students

Remembrance Day
Monday 11 November, a wonderful group of Year 11
students accompanied me to the Mackay and District
Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Cenotaph in Jubilee
Park. Kate Richards, Logan Ahern, Lachlan Carroll and

and represented St Patrick’s College very well. This is the
beginning of the Year 11 students transition to being the
seniors of the college. Remembrance Day is still a very
important day in Australia and the college is always
represented at this ceremony.
