EDITORIAL
Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO) is located ”at the
end of the earth” according to some, or ‘‘at the entrance to
Europe’’ according to others. In any case, UBO is a university
at the forefront, oriented toward the open sea and open to
the world, to all worlds: far off places but also all socioeconomical classes.
Anticipating
the
law
on
university
autonomy
and
responsibilities, UBO has reworked its structure, shaped its
courses for professional needs, consolidated its research
and is implementing an approach of supporting all its
communities. These few pages will give an insight into
the Université de Bretagne Occidentale and its activity.
A
university education is a wonderful chance, so is UBO!

UBO SUPPORTS YOU IN
ALL YOUR PROJECTS
UBO aims to be first and foremost
a university for all, serving all
its communities and its region.
Whether school-leaver, student,
employee, business leader or
public servant, the university
supports you in all your projects:
Supporting students in
succeeding with their career plans
Supporting companies and
institutions in training their
employees
Supporting communities with
further training courses
Supporting companies in their
economic development
Our ability to
cover a range of
disciplines is a
unique asset in
Brittany
UBO is the only multi-discipline
university in Brittany. The transdisciplinary approach of our
courses is a genuine benefit for
our target communities, offering
them the possibility to acquire
vital knowledge and adapt to
a professional world that is
constantly changing.
4
This multi-discipline approach
is also a veritable asset for our
research, because it enables
us to pool the resources from
different disciplines for a given
research theme and thus meet the
expectations of the socio-economic
environments.
A UNIVERSITY
SERVING ITS
COMMUNITIES
The objective of UBO is to best
meet the requirements of its
target communities. It does this
by surveying the needs of the
professional world throughout the
year, in order to adapt our training
courses to market demand and to
optimise the value of our research.
Furthermore, many tools have
been developed to improve not
only the support that we provide
to our target communities but also
their welcome. UBO today enables
its target communities to benefit
from a top-quality environment
in terms of cultural, sporting and
leisure facilities, but also with
regard to the teaching amenities
made available.
Offering each and everyone the
chance to achieve their plans is the
objective that UBO today wishes to
fulfil.
A UNIVERSITY
SERVING ITS
REGION
With almost 2,400 employees,
the university is the 5th biggest
employer in the Brest urban
area. It contributes more
than 200 million euros to the
Finistère department’s gross
domestic product and plays
a role in bringing skills to the
region, developing businesses
as well as providing innovative
solutions. Through supporting
companies and institutions in their
development and projects and by
training their future employees,
UBO is an essential player in the
regional economy.

‘‘UBO is a favoured partner in the
economic development of the Brest
urban area and more generally the
Finistère department. In particular, it
provides our region with international
visibility through the excellence of its
laboratories and its research. It is also a
source of appeal for small and mediumsized businesses and represents a pool
of resources in grey matter and skills.
More than ever, higher education and
research are growth factors for our city
and it is obvious that the Brest urban
area would not allow itself to miss out on
this opportunity and vital metropolitan
function.’’

SUPPORTING
STUDENTS UP
TO ENTRY INTO
EMPLOYMENT
UBO welcomes more than 20,000 students each
year. Its objective is to take into consideration the
uniqueness of each and everyone, support him or her
throughout training courses and provide guidance
for seeking his or her first job. Guiding each of or
students toward their first job is the challenge that
UBO proudly meets!
A BROAD RANGE OF
DISCIPLINES IS THE ANSWER
TO ALL PLANS FOR THE FUTRE
At UBO, all types of university study are possible, with
the exception of pharmacology. This multi-discipline
approach enables us to provide our students with
comprehensive training courses and lets them develop
their own personnel perspective, via:
A choice of training course suited to their wishes,
ambitions and career plans.
The personalisation of their career/study path and
experience: via internships, general diplomas, careerbased training, free choice of options, etc.
Furthermore, this multi-discipline approach allows
us to train future professionals specialised in a
given field but who also boast flexibility and are
capable of joining a structure and understanding
its particularities, professions, people and issues.
Preparing our students for the complexity of the
socio-economic world, helping them to become
adaptable in a constantly changing professional
environment, training specialists of a certain
sector able to integrate into and contribute to the
development of their organisation: these are the
objectives that training provided by UBO aims to
reach.
CAREER-BASED LEARNING AND
TOP-QUALITY TEACHING
At UBO, 70% of the teaching staff are lecturerresearchers and 30% are contributors from the world
of business. The excellent quality of teaching at UBO
stems from this constant cohabitation of research
and the professional world. In addition to outside
contributors, the professionalisation of our training
courses also draws from the development of a broadranging network of partners, who offer our students,
amongst other things, the possibility of first-rate
internships.
In the face of a globalizing labour market, knowledge
of languages is an objective that UBO sets out for
all its students. Today, we enable all our students to
conduct a part of their studies abroad, to develop
an original and beneficial path through their studies,
as well as to live an extremely powerful personal
experience. To encourage and facilitate studies abroad
for our students, we are able to call upon several
resources:
A one-stop service for administrative formalities.
Partnerships with institutions throughout the world.

UBO is a human-sized university and sets a premium
on work in small groups and contact with the
teaching staff, as illustrated through schemes like
its individual tutoring programme that starts at the
beginning of every student’s first year at University.
The tutoring is conducted by students nearing the
end of their courses and teaching staff.
Furthermore, several other schemes have been
implemented to assist our students throughout their
studies and to help them look for their first jobs.

“For a major company like ours, it is
important to develop close links with the
local economic fabric, small and medium
sized businesses, IT consultancies,
universities and graduate engineering
schools. The UBO Electronics Department
and Alcatel-Lucent have worked together
to train students studying for a Masters
in Telecoms and Neworks for several
years now. This involves the immersion
of students in our company, provision of
equipment for practical workshops and
the training of the teaching staff in order
to provide the students with a recognised
level of expertise.
Since 2007, this partnership has also
helped Masters students to prepare
for the “Alcatel-Lucent Certified IP
Specialist” occupational certification,
which is a widely recognised esteemed
qualification in the field of converged
networks. UBO is the only institution in
the world to whom we have proposed this
certification! In this type of partnership,
it is a win-win situation, and I sincerely
hope that our cooperation will stand the
test of time, with new initiatives in the
future…”

“At the JEC Composites Show UBO was the
only French higher education institution
to have stood out from the crowd. In fact,
we won the “JEC Innovation Award” for
the aircraft prototype, the Nijal, that we
produced using a new manufacturing
process: resin infusion.
This innovation has already undergone
wide-ranging technology transfer and
has already been put to many uses
by industrialists. The success of this
project required the energy of more
than 70 students from different courses,
as well as contributions from industrial
partners.
For these students, this project represents
a unique experience, from which they will
gain much benefit in the future”.

“The professionalisation of our initial or
further training courses has massively
changed the perception of the university
in the eyes of businesses. Today, the
university trains people who are highly
skilled in their fields with, in addition,
excellent general knowledge and a global
vision of the world that surrounds them,
giving them great potential to develop
and innovate.
For recruiters, this dimension is a genuine
added value, and they are placing
their trust in the university in growing
numbers.
A fine illustration of such trust is our
Further Training unit, which works with
more than 100 companies per year to
train their employees. Today, it is amongst
the best in France, thanks to the way our
team constantly monitors the needs of
the professional world, day after day, in

“The partnership between UBO and CMB
has a long and rich history. The banking
market expanded massively during
the 1970’s, and recruitment followed
accordingly. The development of the
market gave rise to a need for training
for all these employees. No training
courses focusing on a reference of the
profession – namely that of Private
Account Manager – were available at the
time, so we entered into discussions with
UBO, with whom we jointly developed the
teach model in tune with our needs:
the MBA professional degree now known
as ABF – Assurances Banque Finance
(insurance, banking and finance). It was
an operation of significant magnitude and
allowed us to train almost 400 employees
to become Private Account Managers.
Today, since our needs are developing
more towards expertise, especially in the
field of asset management, alongside
UBO, we are currently examining the
possibility of creating an inter-bank
university diploma for this domain.
Many of our employees have benefited
from the UBO’s APL scheme, for which
they are one of the leading institutions.
UBO have always been able to identify
our needs swiftly.
The strength of the university today lies
it its proximity to businesses”.

Supporting
development
projects
UBO today boasts almost 200 research contracts
per year, ranging from short-term analysis contracts
to partnerships spanning several years with many
companies. It can also count on multi-discipline
teams
able to operate in wide range of contexts:
Cooperation contracts
Impact assessments, feasibility studies
Analysis: NMR, X-ray, Laser, HPLC,
mass spectrometry and ultra high-resolution
electronic microscopy, prototypes used during
sea and land missions, etc.
Individual or team consultancy.
Provision of scientific equipment, premises, skills,
biological equipment, etc.
16
Elliptika was founded in February 2008 by
two doctors from UBO and by three researchers
from the LAB-STICC laboratory (formerly the
Electronics and Telecommunications Systems
Laboratory). By combining different skills in
Mathematics and electronics the team at Elliptika
developed innovative and miniaturised microwave
frequency filtering solutions, which are now used in
many sectors: space, defence, telecommunications
for the general public (mobile telephony, etc.).
Elliptika already boasts more than 10 customers
Including Thalès and CNES (French Space Agency).
For the founders of Elliptika, UBO was a veritable
pillar for the creation of our company. The provision
of premises near to the LABSTICC laboratory and
the advice and support right throughout the
development and progression of the project
were a real bonus in helping us start up our
company”.

“We work in the Laboratoire Domaines
Océaniques (Ocean Domains Laboratory)
at the IUEM on geophysical imaging. In
particular, we use electro-magnetics as
a tool for scanning substrates. We have
developed a tri-dimensional imaging
method that enables us to define the
nature of a substrate located at either
several metres or several kilometres
in depth. This method is of interest
to many domains since it allows the
natural resources of substrates at a
given location to be determined, enables
identification of surface pollution and
monitoring of its development, provides
information on the nature of sub-soils in
the case of sanitary drainage works, etc.
The opportunities for this technology
are therefore plentiful:civil engineering,
hydrology, storage, natural resources,
geothermics, etc. Today, we are planning
to set up a consulting firm and are
already working on the industrialisation
of our product and its development”.
“All research in humanities and social
sciences are oriented towards a same
and single goal: that of understanding
man, societies and organisations. The
research methods used in this domain
are mainly of two types:field surveys
in contact with the actual reality of the
situation and documentary research
on historic documents corpus, images,
films, etc.
The final aim of this research is to publish
articles and works. At UBO, promotion
of research into humanities and social
sciences is very important.
In fact, we organise several international
conferences each year and we enter into
many research contracts with regional
authorities, companies or associations
for performance of surveys, heritage
studies, market research, etc.”
