PASTOR’S CORNER
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In today’s Gospel (Luke 15) Jesus tells three parables to address the
complaint of the Pharisees and scribes. They are upset because Jesus
welcomes and eats with tax collectors and sinners. So Jesus tells them
the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. More
appropriately the parables are of the found sheep, the found coin, and
the found son. The purpose of a parable is to grab the listeners’ attention
with a story that sometimes doesn’t make sense and then help them see
things in a different way.
People hearing that a shepherd would leave ninety-nine docile sheep to
go after one wayward one would probably think the shepherd was crazy.
This would be the same reaction to spending the day looking for a lost
coin. They would have definitely reacted negatively to the crazy father
who accepts the wayward son back who had blown half the father’s estate.
That reaction is exactly what Jesus expects. He wants them to realize that
men and women wouldn’t do this, but God does do this. God is crazy in
love with us. Our Father (Abba) wants to love us into repentance. He
wants us to come back to him when we’ve turned away. He rejoices when
we come back. He throws a party for us when we return to him.
Unfortunately the scribes and Pharisees, who like the older son in the
third parable, do not want to accept the wayward person back. Jesus
reaches out to them as the father does in the “Prodigal Son” parable: “My
son, you are here with me always; everything I have is yours. But now we
must celebrate and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come
to life again; he was lost and has been found.”
May the Lord help us to be like the loving Father who accepts our wayward
sons and daughters back with joy. May we always show our gratitude to
God for forgiving us and embracing us in his extravagant love.

of Faith
Catechetical Sunday
September 15
This year’s theme is “Open the Door
of Faith.” Those whom the community
has designated to serve as catechists
will be commissioned for their ministry.
Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful
opportunity to reflect on the role that
each person plays, by virtue of Baptism,
in handing on the faith and being a
witness to the Gospel. Catechetical
Sunday is an opportunity for all to
rededicate themselves to this mission
as a community of faith.
A Prayer for Catechists
O God, our Heavenly Father, you have
given us the gift of these catechists to
be heralds of the Gospel to our parish
family.
We lift them up to you in thanksgiving
and intercede for them concerning their
hopes and needs.
May we be attentive to the presence of
your Word in them, a Word that lifts up
and affirms, calls forth and challenges,
is compassionate and consoles.

The St. Bonaventure Children’s Choir will begin rehearsals on Thursday, October 3.
All children in grades 1-6 are eligible to be in the choir, regardless of what school they
attend. Rehearsals run from 3:00 to 4:15 p.m. every Thursday, with some exceptions. The
Children’s Choir sings at the 9:00 a.m. Mass from mid-October through the end of May,

or size. You are encouraged to write
your thoughts about war and peace
tolerance, living in harmony with others
somewhere on the pinwheel. Once

in the wind will express our prayers for
peace throughout the country and the

Treasuring Your Marriage

the newly engaged to those who have been married over 60 years. This program
fulfills the premarital preparation requirements for the Diocese of Orange and also

There is a critical shortage of blood.
Donation is easy. It takes about one hour of your time to donate. Giving is safe, easy
and less painful than you might imagine. Since their last visit to St. Bonaventure in
June, the Red Cross has improved their blood drive procedures making your visit
faster and easier than ever.
A diet rich in iron prior to donation is important.
Iron is necessary in building the proteins in red blood cells, that help carry oxygen
from the lungs to all parts of the body. Red blood cells help the body metabolize
energy and stay healthy. Iron-rich foods help maintain a healthy hematocrit level and
help ensure that donors are eligible to give blood.
Some foods rich in iron are: raisins, dates, prunes, tomatoes, all types of beans,
nuts, grain products, meats and poultry, fish and shellfish. Also, vitamin C helps the
body to absorb iron. Foods high in vitamin C are: citrus, strawberries, tomatoes and
broccoli. It is recommended that donor avoid beverages with tannin concentrations,
which inhibit iron absorption during meals. These include coffee, teas and red wine.
Drinking plenty of water is recommended for the day of donation.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING: Treasure Our Elderly
According to the United Nations, the world is in the midst of a demographic transition
that will see the expansion of elderly populations everywhere. By 2050, the worldwide
population age 60 and over is expected to surpass the number of people under the
age of 5. The number of the elderly will more than triple, reaching two billion by 2050.
The number of those over 80 is likely to quadruple to nearly 400 million by 2050. The
shift is emerging in more industrialized and less developed countries and is resulting
in consequential changes in the areas of economic growth, housing, employment and
health care.
The increasing number of older people causes serious human rights concerns. It points
to a growing sector of the population that is highly vulnerable to neglect, isolation and
abuse. Age is, disturbingly, a cause of discrimination for people seeking social and
medical services. The plight of the aging compels comprehensive human rights-based
legislation. This includes policies and services to guarantee that the dignity of the person
is respected and to ensure that the elderly enjoy all their rights. First and foremost,
this demographic shift reminds legislators, policymakers and the global community that
human rights do not end at age 60 or 65. Human rights are inherent to all peoples.
People everywhere should be able to age with security and dignity and to participate as
citizens with full rights. Amen!

EL PURGATORIO
El santo Peruano Fray Juan Macias fue dominico. Este santo es reconocido como el
amparo de los pobres, patrón de los emigrantes y ladrón del purgatorio. El concepto
del purgatorio es un poco difícil de entender. La Iglesia adoptó la creencia en la última
purificación de los elegidos (nombrado el Purgatorio) en los siglos XV y XVI en los
concilios de Florencia y Trento. Ella se basa en las Escrituras que se refieren en la
purificación en el fuego (1 Corintios 3:15; 1 Pedro 1:7) y en la práctica de la oración por
los difuntos como aparece en 2 Macabeos 12:46 y Job 1:5. San Juan Crisóstomo dijo:
“Si los hijos de Job fueron purificados por el sacrificio de su padre, ¿porqué vamos a
dudar que nuestras oraciones por los difuntos puedan hacerle llegar alguna consolación
a los que han muerto? Ofrezcamos pues, nuestras oraciones por los difuntos. Los que
están en purgación necesitan nuestro apoyo en la oración. Pidamos por ellos.”

and Vietnamese for adults. We will be offering a special
session for teens between the ages of 14-18 years old.

PILGRIMAGE TO TURKEY AND THE HOLY LAND
February 10-22, 2014
Depart from Los Angeles. Visit Istanbul and the house of the
Blessed Virgin Mary in Ephesus. Then fly to the Holy Land where
you will visit the sites along the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, the
Mount of Beatitudes, the Jordan River and Cana the traditional
site where Jesus performed his first public miracle at the wedding.
Then on to Nazareth and the Church of the Annunciation, Mount
Tabor of the Transfiguration, Old Jaffa and on to Jerusalem.
