SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
DECEMBER 07, 2014
Mass Intentions
Today’s Gospel Reflection
1st Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 * Psalm 85:9-14
2nd Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-14 * Gospel: Mark 1:1-8
EXILE
Both Isaiah and Peter had the task
of comforting and encouraging their
communities during times of exile. The
Israelites were in geographic exile from
Israel; to them this was, in effect, the
same as being in exile from their God.
The early Christians, following the
Resurrection, expected an immediate
return of Christ in glory; they, too, felt in “exile” as the delay of the
Second Coming grew longer and longer. All four of scripture’s
authors today—Isaiah, the psalmist, Peter, and Mark—hasten to
help us see things in God’s terms, not ours. They want us to
know that we can never truly be exiled from God, or from Godamong-us, since we know that when the faithful are gathered,
Christ has come into their midst. Instead, we are encouraged
today to do what we can from our end to shorten the time of our
exile: to repent of our sins, to return our lives to the Lord, to live
as people who seek the coming day of the Lord, when “kindness
and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss” (Psalm 85:10).

“Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill
shall be made low.” — Isaiah 40:4
EXILIO
Tanto Isaías como Pedro
tenían la tarea de consolar y
animar a sus comunidades
durante épocas de exilio. El de
los israelitas era un exilio
geográfico, apartados de Israel;
para ellos, en efecto, era lo
mismo que estar exilados de su
Dios. Los primeros cristianos, seguido de la Resurrección,
anticipaban una vuelta inmediata de Cristo en su gloria;
besan” (Salmo 85 [84]:11).

ST. MICHAEL CHURCH
PARADISE HILLS, SAN DIEGO
Dear Parishioners and friends,
The Church is inviting us to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance
especially during the season of Advent to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord.
PASTOR’S MESSAGE
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a gift from God to forgive sins committed after
Baptism. The Sacrament of Reconciliation/Penance comprises of the following:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
Examination of conscience and being sorry for sins committed.
Confession or telling of our sins to the priest.
The priest gives absolution to the penitent.
Satisfaction, that is, performing penance given by the priest.
Firm resolution on the part of the penitent to avoid the occasion of sins.
On Thursday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m. we will have our Advent Penance Service here at St.
Michael Church. Priests from other parishes will be coming to hear confessions. Take this opportunity. Come
to prepare ourselves for Christmas. Coming to the Sacrament of reconciliation is an act of humility. It is by
humbling down ourselves that our sins are forgiven. “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and
whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20:23) It means that sins that are not forgiven on earth are not
forgiven in heaven. “The power to forgive sins is exercised in the sacrament of penance” (Council of Trent).

December 8 (Monday) is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Mother
Mary. This is a holy day of obligation. We have Mass at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Blessings from St. Michael Academy to the St. Michael Parish Community!
The students of St. Michael Academy are in the midst of a Christmas toy drive to
benefit children who would not otherwise receive a gift. Catholic Charities will collect these
toys for distribution through their Christmas store where parents who cannot afford to buy a
toy can ‘shop’ for their children. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please drop
a new unwrapped toy to the Academy office no later than Monday, December 15th. As always, we are
grateful for your example of giving and your support of our projects.
Enrollment/registration is an ongoing process at St. Michael Academy. We are a Kindergarten through 8th Grade
school. Call the office and schedule a tour of the Academy. Give us an opportunity to show you how the cost of your child’s
Catholic education can fit into your budget. Call 619-470-4880, or e-mail Mrs. Lewis @ rlewis@stmichaelsandiego.org.
Fr. Manny offers a $1000 discount to new families enrolling in the Academy.

PREPARE THE WAY OF THE LORD
Saint Peter shows us a characteristic of God that we normally do not think about. He tells us that for God, “a day is like a
thousand years and a thousand years like one day. (1 Peter 3:8).
Because early Christians sometimes complained that Jesus’
second coming had been delayed, Peter is trying to tell us that
what seems like a long time to us is nothing to God.
Like the early Christians, we may wonder how long it will
take for God to answer our prayers. We may be praying for
someone who is looking for a job, a sick relative, an end to
abortion, or world peace. Some prayers require us to change,
and we may not be ready.
What Peter means is that a thousand years is not too long
for God if someone needs that long to repent. God is far more
patient than we are. God has been “waiting” over two thousand
years for us to preach the gospel to all nations. God has been
waiting for millennia for people to give up war as a means for
solving our problems. God has been waiting since the beginning
of the human race for us to learn how to love our neighbor.
We might not be as patient as God, but we can help. Saint
Peter says that we are not just waiting for the Lord’s return, we
are hastening it. When we make a choice that is based on faith
rather than selfishness, we make it a little easier for people to
believe in God. Jesus is the light of the world; he asks us to let
our light shine, so that people can see Jesus in us. May our light
“prepare the way of the Lord” (Mark 1:3).

ONLINE GIVING.
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle. Be our
protection against the wickedness and
snares of the devil. May God rebuke
him, we humbly pray; and do Thou,
O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the
Divine Power of God - cast into hell,
Satan and all the evil spirits, who roam
throughout the world seeking the ruin
of souls. Amen.
