Choosing to spend time in Kiama and its surrounds is a good move. A perfect escape for doing plenty or doing plenty of nothing; be it a holiday, weekend away or day out. Starting with your choice of 9 beautiful beaches; whatever your reason, there’s a perfect & pristine beach to suit. Ease into lazy hazy days of sun, sea & surf, enjoy some family time on a patrolled beach, splash about, catch a wave; it’s all here. More than beaches: our rivers & rock pools, inlets & basins and two harbours let you launch your boat, fish, dive, swim, kayak or windsurf. Cool, refreshing and essential in summer – romantic, dramatic and invigorating in winter! Kiama’s celebrated Blowhole, discovered by George Bass in 1870, shoots spectacular plumes of water high into the air, through an ancient rock tunnel. An exciting natural phenomenon that has given our largest town its name; Kiama actually means “where the sea makes a noise”. For those who enjoy a stroll or a power walk, our scenic coastal walk is a must. Signposted all the way, Kiama Coast Walk stretches 22km between Minnamurra River and Werri Beach via the Blowhole & lighthouse past rocky headlands, beaches, secret caves, coves and glorious ocean vistas with whales & dolphins on show. A 5 minute drive from the seaside brings you to our charming countryside, lush green tumbling hills, dairy cows & pastures. Meander through picturesque Jamberoo, Saddleback Mountain and Rose Valley to see historic dry stone walls, country pubs, wineries, farms & red roofed homesteads. The views from our mountains & hills over the ocean are simply breathtaking. Glimpse lyrebirds, abundant flora & fauna at the Minnamurra Rainforest & waterfall on your walk through the dark, cool & sun dappled rainforest. At the nearby Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk above the rainforest to take a soaring bird’s eye view of the forest below. Never boring…nature’s gifts are exquisitely showcased at every corner. We love our visitors and it’s not long before you’ll love us too. Our vibrant pubs, clubs, cafes & eateries tempt. Arts, crafts & produce markets, live music, festivals, sports & wine shows inspire a convivial welcome. Action lovers can get their fix at the famous Jamberoo Action Park, or at any of our surfing competitions, sporting tournaments or fishing challenges. And the best news? An easy and scenic train trip from Sydney or 1.5 hours in the car and only 2.5 hours drive from Canberra and you’re here! Could anything be more perfect? Discover it all again! Kiama the way we were, view from Minnamurra St. left to righ: And today: Gerringong Cemetery, Council Chambers, Kiama Post Office. 8 History Discovered by George Bass in December 1797 and first settled by Europeans around 1830, our rich history is reflected in heritage trails, charming old buildings such as our Italianate post office, Courthouse (completed in 1860 it’s the oldest surviving building on the South Coast of NSW) and unique timber terrace shops, once miner’s cottages. Timber and the getting of cedar was our first major industry, plus a dabble in wheat (find the remains of an old flour mill near Bush Bank); however the area became best known for its dairying. Jamberoo had four butter factories alone and Australia’s first dairy co-operative. Today, our rolling green hills still sustain the dairy farms that provide the milk for your cuppa. Can you believe that Kiama Harbour was once a quarry? Stone and blue metal mining commenced in the area in the 1800’s and continues today. The remarkable landscapes at Bombo Quarry and the sporting fields at Kiama Leisure Centre are quarrying legacies. Explore the full story on our coastal walks with fascinating details found along the way, or drop into the historic Pilots Cottage Museum on Blowhole Point, bursting with stories of our past. The Kiama Family History Centre is one of the largest in NSW, a great opportunity to dig about in your own past. A visit to some of our cemeteries promises an absorbing adventure, try Kiama Cemetery at Bombo, Kendall Cemetery or the Gerringong Cemetery located above Boat Harbour on Gerringong Headland. Have you noticed those dry stone walls rambling over the countryside? Now heritage listed and built between 1850 & 1880, over 350 remain today. The area began luring tourists well over a century ago. Kiama’s Blowhole started to attract tourists from around 1850 with visitors arriving by steamer from Sydney. In the 1890’s they could arrive by train. The long stretch of firm flat sand at Gerroa’s Seven Mile Beach has its own notorious past. Used for horse racing in the 1860’s, sand mining in 1894 after the discovery of gold and car & motorcycle racing in the roaring 20’s. This same beach was used by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in 1933 to take off on the first commercial flight between Australia and New Zealand. October, 1874 a meeting was held to seek means to erect public baths in Kiama for the use of residents and visitors. Up until that time baths had not made their appearance in the homes of the people and washing the body was an uncommon practice. The Lands Department granted a site on the north side of the harbour for one pound per annum rent. Upon completion in 1877, tickets were sold at tuppence per bath. These became the Ladies Baths. In 1888 the Men’s Baths were constructed on Blowhole Point. These “rock pools” as they’re known today make for a beautiful morning swim and are a popular attraction in summer. We suggest you just get amongst our glorious outdoors and enjoy. Walk it, drive, cycle or swim, from one beautiful end of our area to the other, you’ll experience natures bounty everywhere. Long stretches of pristine golden beaches, our shoreline offers you dramatic crashing waves to gentle whispering ripples. Find your favourite beach. Is it Jones Beach, Surf Beach, Kendalls Beach, Werri Beach, Mystics, Bombo, Easts Beach, Seven Mile Beach or Boneyard?…Nine to choose from! Two glorious rivers & estuaries at Minnamurra and Crooked Rivers, four rock pools: 2 on either side of Kiama Harbour, one at Werri Beach & one at Gerringong’s Boat Harbour, rocky headlands & rugged outcrops, waterfalls, rainforests, mountains, lookouts, winding country lanes, babbling brooks, pastures, hills & valleys – every vista is spectacular. Exposed rock along our coast was laid down around 50 million years before dinosaurs roamed so it’s no surprise that fossils are to be found amongst rock platforms and cliffs. 10 Blowholes & Beaches A native garden at Bonaira Reserve, Carrington Falls, Minnamarra Rainforest & Falls at Budderoo National Park, Spring Creek Reserve & Bird Hide and Barren Grounds Nature Reserve offer a cornucopia of flora and fauna, a delight for any nature lover. And we proudly boast two Blowholes! Our famous, impressive “big” Blowhole, next to Kiama Lighthouse performs at its powerful best when the seas run southeast, squirting columns of water some 20 metres into the air. Views from this volcanic headland both up and down the coast, take your gaze as far as the eye can see. Mighty migrating whales & frolicsome dolphins are frequent guests on our shoreline. A few headlands south is the frisky “little” Blowhole, playfully & constantly shooting plumes of seawater into the air, a perfect place to pause and ponder on your coastal walk from Kiama to Werri Beach. Lucky enough it operates at its best when seas are hailing from the north-east, opposite to its bigger brother. cals Love... o L #4 “Looking ahead at the stunning Seven Mile Beach while driving down the coast road is like being on holidays 24/7!” Crystal, Gerroa Photographs spread: Seven Mile Beach, Gerroa andyhutchinson.com.au left to right, top to bottom: Mystics Beach; Easts Beach; Kendalls Beach; Surfers at Seven Mile; Kiama’s “big” Blowhole Blowholes & Beaches 11 Bring your WALKING SHOES cals Love... o L #5 There is nothing like walking to get the feel of a place. “A Sunday morning walk along Werri Beach front, up the southern headland to Belinda street.
