business and develop a closer relationship with
our elected officials. The Street Fair
Committee, is a new committee, which is
planning a Bicentennial Party for this fall. This
will be a major Clintonville event and we will
be looking for members for this committee.
This Chamber is the best chamber organization
in central Ohio. We know how to accomplish
work and have fun doing it. It has been exciting to see the growth and maturing of this organization in the past year and I am thankful that
I was permitted to be part of it.

Columbus Blue Jackets. Chamber members
also exchanged ideas in an informal atmosphere at the monthly "Business After Hours"
programs.
The Chamber's annual Recognition Dinner
in
February
honored
Clintonville
Incorporated president D Searcy, as the
"Person of the Year" for 2001. In April, the
fourth annual Spring Concert at North High
School was an overwhelming success, despite
a few technical problems. Bluegrass singer
Rhonda Vincent entertained the capacity
crowd. In May, thirty-six students from
Clintonville area middle school students were
honored at the Student Citizen Breakfast.

Education provided the keynote address.
Things were bloomin' in June with the annual Rose Festival. Also in June, over a dozen
chamber members participated in the Central
Ohio Chamber's Combined Trade Fair, which
was held at the Worthington Mall. July in
Combined Central Ohio Trade Fair for 2002
Clintonville means fireworks and celebration.
Again in 2002, the chamber worked closely
with the 4th of July Committee to present a
fun-filled day for over 25,000 residents and

Chamber of Commerce, in
conjunction with other central Ohio chambers, will again
present the "Disney Keys to
Excellence" seminar program.
The program will be held on
March 6, 2003, at the Villa
Milano Conference Center,
1630 Schrock Rd. (see insert).
This year's program will focus
on Leadership and Service.
In "Leadership, Disney Style"
participants will learn how
effective leadership has been
the catalyst at Walt Disney
World to drive employee/customer satisfaction and bottom-line results. Key components of the program include:
communicating a compelling
vision, building involvement
and ownership, and capitalizing on change.
"Service, Disney Style: focuses
on developing a service philosophy, learning tools to support a service culture, and
learning how to deliver on the
service theme.
The registration deadline for
the program is Thursday, Feb
20, 2003.

As I reflect on my 2002 presidency, I realize that
I am a low-profile type person who did not meet
everyone that I should have, but was able to be
part of many great things that happened within
the Chamber. I was able to observe a natural
transformation of the Board of Trustees from a
strictly social networking mindset to a more
political, community-oriented awareness and
consciousness that shows the positive growth of
an organization. In 2002, we hired a new executive director, Ernie Hartong, who comes to us
with Chamber experience in the Marietta
Chamber of Commerce and the Greater
Columbus Chamber of Commerce, along with
a booming voice, which he uses as the announcer for the Columbus Landsharks. I witnessed
and participated in monthly meetings of the
three Clintonville organizations, Clintonville
Area Commission, Clintonville Incorporated,
and the Clintonville Area Chamber of
Commerce, to show continuity and one voice

on issues that go outside of the Clintonville area,
as well as, producing a phenomenal piece for
attracting new businesses to Clintonville.
The city of Columbus offered Façade grants,
which many were utilized and completed in
2002 by Chamber members. New committees
and task forces were implemented in 2002 and
Chamber members will see the results of those
efforts in 2003. The first one is a Governmental
Action Committee, which became very active

2003 Retail Outlook Focus of Luncheon
John C. Mahaney, Jr. the long time president
of the Ohio Council of Retail Merchants will
discuss the "2003 Retail Outlook for Central
Ohio" at the Clintonville Area Chamber of
Commerce's monthly luncheon on Tuesday,
January 21, 2003. The luncheon will be held
at the Clintonville Woman's Club, 3951 N.
High St.
“John Mahaney is "Mr. Retail" in Ohio," said
Ernie Hartong, Clintonville Chamber
Executive Director. "Since the majority of our
members are small retailers, we think this is a
great opportunity for them to get

A native of Zanesville, Mahaney
is a graduate of Niagara
University. His background
includes experience in journalism, radio broadcasting and
advertising. Mahaney joined the
Ohio Council of Retail
Merchants in 1958. In 1962, he
was named Assistant Director and was made
Associate Director in 1965. He was selected
Executive Director in 1969 and became
President in 1971.
As President, Mahaney
coordinates all staff activities, including legislative,
governmental and public
relations.

of new executive Ernie Hartong.
Chamber members and their guests "teed it
up" in August at the Annual Chamber Golf
Outing. The 2002 outing also honored the
late Thomas B. Leavitt by using the event to
assist the Leavitt family in creating the
"Thomas B. Leavitt Scholarship Fund." The
fund will award three scholarships to
Clintonville residents starting in 2003.
September brought the fall colors to
Clintonville's tree lined streets and color to
the annual Arts Festival. Mayor Coleman also
came to Clintonville in September for the
ground breaking at the new Fire Station 19.
The business community and residents joined
forces for the First "High Street Sweep" in
October. In November, there were over seventy people in attendance at the Chamber's
"Community Forum" discussing retail and
restaurant options in the community. More
than 1100 entries were received as part of the
chamber's "Holiday Giveaway" promotion in
December. Clintonville resident Lauren
Donnell was the Grand Prize winner.
Columbus Blue Jackets president, Doug
MacLean drew the largest luncheon crowd of
the year when he spoke to chamber members
at the December luncheon.
All in all, 2002 was an active, exciting, and
productive year for the chamber. With your
continued support, 2003 will be even more
exciting.

Chamber Supports CRC Book Drive
Again this year, the Clintonville Area Chamber
of Commerce will act as one of the drop off
points for the Clintonville Beechwold
Community Resource Center Book Drive. The
drive will benefit the Kids Club at Clinton
Elementary School and is headed by Chamber
Past President Scott Smith, former Clintonville
Area Commissioner, Stu Harris, and Beth
Stewart-Magee of the CRC.
The program serves over 80 students and last
year over 1,000 books were collected. You can

A major focus for the Chamber in 2003 is more
involvement from you! One of the major
advantages of chamber membership is developing new business contacts by serving on the various chamber committees. There is a vast pool
of talented people who are chamber members
and we need your help to make our programs
successful. Here is a list of chamber committees
for 2003. If you or others in your business are
interested in be a part of these committees,
please contact Ernie Hartong at 262-2790 or

Networking Committee Chair: Luba Istocki
Duties: To plan, coordinate, and execute chamber networking events including luncheons,
breakfast, and Business After Hours. This committee will assist the staff in securing speakers,
encouraging member attendance at events, and
planning new events to meet member needs.
Governmental Action Committee Chair:
Phil Moots
Duties: To establish a positive link between the
Chamber and elected officials and their staff
members, to track legislation that effects business at the local, state and federal level, and to
recommend to the Chamber Board positions on
relevant business legislation and issues.
Economic Development Committee Chair:
Duties: To provide information and assistance
to new businesses considering locating in
Clintonville and to those existing businesses
considering expansion in Clintonville.
Committee members will visit new Clintonville
businesses to welcome them to the community.
Spring Concert Committee Chair:
Brenda Pinnell
Duties: Plan and implement the Chamber's
annual Spring Concert. Committee will be
responsible for all marketing materials, publicity, and ticket sales associated with the concert.
Membership Committee Chair:
Duties: Committee members will welcome
new members to the Chamber and explain the
Chamber's programs and goals. This committee will also plan and execute the Chamber's
annual membership drive.
Communications Committee Chair:
Duties: Committee will oversee and develop all
of the Chamber's written and electronic member communications. The newsletter sub-committee will assist the staff in the writing of
newsletter articles and solicitation of newsletter
advertising. The website sub-committee will
assist the staff with the maintenance and content of the Chamber's website www.clintonvillechamber.com. Members of this sub-committee will also assist the staff in soliciting advertising for the website.
Fall Festival Committee Chair: Sharon Daye
Duties: This committee will plan and execute a
major fall festival for Clintonville in the fall of
2003. While the Chamber will spearhead this
effort, the committee will involve other
Clintonville organizations and residents in the
planning of this event.
Golf Outing Committee Chair:
Jacquelyn Lucas Murphy
Duties: Plan and execute the Chamber's annual Thomas B. Leavitt Scholarship Golf Outing
held in August. Committee members will also
solicit sponsors and participants for the event.
Student Citizen Breakfast Committee Chair:
Duties: Plan and implement the Chamber's
annual Student Citizen Breakfast, which is held
in May. Committee will work closely with local
middle schools to identify those students to be
honored and secure sponsorships for the event.
Benefits Committee Chair: Tom Paplaczyk
Duties: To review the Chamber's member benefits program, including health insurance, supplemental benefits and worker's compensation
and communicate these programs to the membership. Committee will also review and recommend any new benefit programs.
Clintonville Resident is Grand Prize Winner
More than 1100 registrations were received in the
Chamber's
"Holiday
Giveaway" promotion
program. Over 400 of
the registrations came
from zip codes outside of
Clintonville. Winner of
Lauren Donnell,
Grand Prize Winner the $1000 Grand Prize
was Lauren Donnell of Clintonville. Lauren
registered at the Clintonville Community
Market. Eighteen Clintonville businesses participated in the promotion, each provided an
additional prize from their business.
As part of the promotion, the Chamber's
Communications Committee conducted a
"pilot survey" regarding shopping in
Clintonville. While the survey was merely a
random sampling of a limited number of both
residents and non-residents, there were a number of recurring themes and comments that
indicate a more extensive survey should be
undertaken. Seventy surveys were distributed,
92% to Clintonville residents and 8% to nonresidents. Comments from the surveys included, "more variety of shops and stores, solve the
parking and speeding problems, create incentives for new and expanding shops, and emphasize the unique qualities of the area."

chairperson of the 2003 Spring Concert, a position she also held in 2002. Brenda is a North
High Alumnus, and a graduate of The Ohio
State University. In 1973, she began working at
Pacemont Marathon for her father as a bookkeeper and now works with her two sisters in the
management of the family business, Bernie's
Garage. She is a member of the North High
"Hall of Fame" Selection Committee. Her

notes that he has two dogs and was married last

Crabbe, Brown, and James law firm.

the President/CEO for Ackerman Credit Union
for the past ten years, a job that puts him in constant contact with Clintonville businesses and
