Head Coach 2008-09 Season Jeff THOMAS Head Coach Seventh Year at Liberty Liberty, ‘95 Jeff Thomas was named the third head coach in the history of the Liberty University golf program on June 14, 2004, replacing longtime head coach Frank Landrey who retired from his position in May 2004. an NCAA Championship. The 2006 Flames won three tournaments, including Campbell’s Hargrove Davis Spring Classic, and placed second twice, including shooting a seasonlow 15-under at the James Madison Invitational. Seven golfers finished the season with averages under 76, which became another Liberty golf first. Thomas was a four-year member of the Flames’ golf program (1992-95) and graduated from Liberty in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in business management. 2008-09 LIBERTY GOLF “We are happy to promote Jeff to the position of head coach as he has played a significant part in the recent success of our men’s golf program,” commented former athletic director Kim Graham. “It is always gratifying to bring a Liberty graduate back to guide one of our programs. I am confident that Jeff will continue to strive to better our program’s efforts in the Big South and on the regional and national scenes.” Thomas joined the Flames’ golf coaching staff during the 2001-02 season and made an immediate impact on the program as he helped Liberty advance to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in school history, becoming the first Liberty program to receive an at-large bid to an NCAA Championship. “I am excited for the opportunity to become the next golf coach at this great Christian university,” said Thomas. “I would like to thank Coach Landrey for everything he has done for this program throughout his career as Liberty golf coach. It is my desire to lead this team in the direction in which Coach Landrey has envisioned and planned.” Prior to coming to Liberty, Thomas served as an instructional professional at River Hills Country Club in Tampa, Fla., Walden Lake Golf and Country Club in Plant City, Fla. and the head professional at Poplar Forest Golf Club in Forest, Va., where he and his wife, Heidi, currently reside with their three daughters, Molly (5), Madeline (3) and Mia (2). The Thomas Family As the assistant in 2004, Thomas helped guide the Flames to a school-record team stroke average (297.94), an individual tournament victory at the Drew Upton Golf Classic, hosted by Towson, and helped six golfers finish the season with averages below 76, marking the first time in the program’s history that six individual golfers have finished with sub-76 averages. In 2006, his second season at the helm, Thomas led the Flames back to the NCAA Regionals as an at-large team. The bid still makes the golf team the only program at Liberty to earn an at-large nod to 4 Seven Academic All-Americans Since 1993 2008-09 Season Assistant Coach Albie POWERS Assistant Coach Third Year at Liberty Liberty, ‘05 Albie Powers enters his third year as an assistant coach after being a part of the golf program since 2001. Powers shot the lowest round for Liberty at the 2006 NCAA East Regional in Lake Nona, Fla. Prior to coming to Liberty, Powers was a standout at Keene High School where he was a three-time all-state golfer.
