After his inaugural campaign saw 2004 graduate Ann Schnell earn first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association and CAA Womenʼs Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards on the womenʼs side, and 2005 graduate Gary Barton earn second-team All-CAA and all-state honors for the men, his golfers achieved even greater success in his second year. Barton and classmate Tim Pemberton were both named to the all-region team, with Pemberton also earning first-team All-CAA and second-team all-state honors as he finished his collegiate playing days with the lowest career average in Tribe history. Barton garnered second-team all-conference and first-team all-state acclaim after leading the team throughout the year, and capped his career by winning the Cavalier Classic in a one-hole playoff, his second individual medal in four years. As a team, the men captured two tournament titles, an outstanding accomplishment for a squad composed primarily of underclassmen. In March the Tribe defended its home course, winning a three-team playoff to triumph in the W&M Invitational. In April, the College followed Bartonʼs charge to win the Cavalier Classic by a stroke over a 12-team field that included many Atlantic Coast Conference and CAA rivals. In recognition of his accomplishments, Albaugh was named the State Golf Coach of the Year by the Virginia Golf Coaches Association in July. Albaugh has shown an ability for molding young players into consistent contributors. In his first season, his work with then-freshmen Matt Brantingham, Ryan Price and Hunter Watts was evident through the spring season as the trio broke out with a number of solid top-10 and top-20 showings and started playing consistently in the No. 2 and 3 positions and even in the No. 1 spot at times. Their progression continued in their second season, as they became a force on the travel squad and shot at or near par on a consistent basis while threatening for medalist honors. This year, the trio will be looked to as the strong nucleus of the team. Albaugh came to the Tribe from Eastern Illinois University where he served as the head coach for both the menʼs and womenʼs golf teams. In his five years at Eastern Illinois, Albaugh saw both squads achieve their best finishes at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship, including a runner-up result for the women in 2003. The 2002-03 season also saw Albaugh lead each team to a victory, with the men taking the 11-team Harris Invitational while the women won the Butler Invitational. Overall, Albaugh coached his teams to four wins during his tenure, which included the womenʼs first win as a program. He also led each team to its lowest stroke average in history. Previously, Albaugh served three years as the head golf coach at Mount St. Maryʼs College. While there, he oversaw the creation of the womenʼs golf program and also led the menʼs team to its best conference finish (fourth). Albaugh, a 1996 graduate of Mount St. Maryʼs, was a four-year letterwinner in golf and was named first team All-Northeast Conference his junior and senior seasons. The Mountaineersʼ number one golfer for three years, Albaugh won the American University Invitational in 1994 and was a two-time selection to the NEC Scholar-Athlete team. Albaugh has also served as an assistant golf professional for three years and is a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America and the National Golf Coaches Association. Albaugh holds a bachelorʼs degree in business administration from Mount St. Maryʼs and a masterʼs degree in athletic administration from Eastern Illinois. In September 2004 he was named to the NCAA Menʼs Golf Mid-Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee. Peter Gyscek Assistant Coach Pete Gyscek enters his first season in the collegiate coaching ranks as the assistant coach for both the menʼs and womenʼs programs at William and Mary. A long-time Williamsburg resident, Gyscek is the owner of the Dynamic Golf Studio, a Williamsburg-area teaching center, and the skills he employs will no doubt be put to great use by the Tribe golfers. Gyscek is a Class “A” member of the Professional Golfers Association of America, and has competed as a professional on several mini-tours and in the Mid-Atlantic PGA. He is also an associate member of the National Golf Coaches Association, and is a Certified Golf Instructor as well as being a Master Clubfitter and Equipment Specialist. Gyscek graduated from Niagara University in 1985 with a bachelorʼs in business management. A four-year letterwinner as a member of the varsity golf team, he also served as captain for three years. He lives in Williamsburg with his wife, Michele, and five-year old son, Noah. www.TribeAthletics.com 2005-06 William and Mary Golf • 3 Men’s 2005-06 Outlook Overview Three juniors who pushed W&M to the brink of regional qualification in 2004-05 will assume leading roles on the team for the upcoming season. Matt Brantingham, Ryan Price, and Hunter Watts stepped up last season and helped lead the team through the spring semester, but were frustrated by the regional selection committee when it picked the University of Maryland over the Tribe on the eighth tiebreak. This season, Director of Golf Jay Albaugh, the 2005 Virginia Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year, does not intend the give the selection committee a choice on whether or not to include the College, and has designs to pick up a few more tournament titles and contend for the team’s first Colonial Athletic Association crown since 1985 along the way. Seniors Two seniors will provide veteran leadership and will have an opportunity to become permanent fixtures in the tournament lineup. Tom McGinn is one of the best putters on the team. With a wealth of tournament experience, McGinn has flashed his great talent, opening in 7274 on the challenging Royal New Kent course at the Joe Agee Invitational. He repeated that season low of 72 to close the Princeton Invitational. Jeff Steckmest will look for big things in his senior season to capitalize on his great potential. One of the longest hitters on the team and strong wedge player, Steckmest has all the tools to score well and just needs more consistency to become a regular fixture on the travel squad. He has already proven he can go low, with a career best of 70 and an impressive effort of 71 at the 2004 CAA Championship. one of its strongest putters, Price was the hero of the Tribe’s playoff win at its home tournament, rolling in a 15-footer for the difference-making birdie against Richmond. He shot three rounds of 72 last season, including the final round of the CAA Championship, and is another threat for hardware. Watts will study abroad in the fall and may redshirt the entire season, although he could play upon his return in the spring. Watts had a breakthrough last fall, where he was the clubhouse leader during the first round of the Hoya Invitational. Playing with great maturity at No. 1, he clinched runner-up honors with a strong even-par effort in the final round. A clutch player, Watts seems to have the uncanny ability to close very strong on the final nine. Sophomores Two sophomores will aim to step into the traveling lineup after being close all year in qualifying. Jay Sutton has a good, simple swing and showed flashes of brilliance in limited competition as a rookie. He fired a one-over 73 in the second round of the Joe Agee Invitational, part of a strong debut that saw him post 78-73-76 on the challenging Royal New Kent course. Jonas Miller is the team’s “range rat” and is a very accurate and analytical player. His freshman campaign was highlighted by an opening 75 at the Joe Agee Invitational. Newcomers Doug Hurson has already been tested at the national level as a two-time U.S. Amateur qualifier. As a senior, he won the Interstate Athletic Conference championship and amassed a 7-2 record in match play. Brent Paladino had a whirlwind summer adding to his already impressive resume. He qualified for the U. S. Amateur by firing rounds of 68-70 and also claimed medalist honors (141) in sectional qualifying for the U.S Public Links Amateur. The 2003 Connecticut Section PGA Player of the Year brings a unique swing and foul weather experience from playing in the Northeast to the team. Chris Ray joins the Tribe as the Jefferson District Player of the Year in Central Virginia. Leading his high school team to the past two AA state titles, Ray has enormous length and creative shot selection. Schedule The season began in September at the Central Region Fall Preview, where the Tribe finished 17th. Paladino debuted well to lead the team at +5 (tied for 15th). Traveling to Florence, SC one week later, the squad finished 13th, as Hurson emerged as one of the program’s top players finishing tied for 12th at one-under. The College hosted the Joe Agee Invite on October 3-4, finishing sixth. Hurson again was the top scorer, shooting 214 (-2) to finish sixth on the individual leaderboard. In Philadelpia for the Big 5 Classic, the team finished ninth and Paladino reclaimed the top spot, shooting +8 to tie for 16th. The fall drew to a close at Georgetown, with the team finishing eighth and Hurson tied for eighth (E). The winds of March open the spring season, with the Tribe at Birkdale Country Club in Huntersville, North Carolina, on March 10-11 for the Birkdale Collegiate Classic, before returning to Williamsburg to defend their team title at the William and Mary Invitational on the 20th and 21st. April finds the College competing in the Drew Upton Memorial, in Westover, Maryland, April 1st and 2nd. The final tournament of the regular season will be the Marshall Invitational, in Huntington, West Virginia, April 7th and 8th. The CAA championship will be held at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, on the Number 6 course, from April 14-16. Juniors Brantingham had a breakthrough in the spring season, challenging last year’s captains for the team lead in every tournament. He played at No. 1 for the final round of the W&M Invitational after opening with a 73, and iced the Tribe’s win with a sand-save playing last on the first playoff hole. The purest ball striker on the team, Brantingham has improved his putting and gained mental maturity, making him a formidable frontrunner for medalist honors. Price has proven to be a rock of consistency for the team in his first two seasons, as he has gradually knocked strokes off his game. Price takes pressure off his fellow teammates and allows them to be more aggressive as his innate ability to get the ball in the hole, even after wayward shots, means the junior won’t post a score higher than Back (l to r): Assistant Coach Pete Gyscek, Jeff Steckmest, Jonas Miller, Tom McGinn, Director of Golf Jay Albaugh. A mix of youth and veterans will combine to compose a formidable lineup that will take their shot at the field. gether and consistently post more scores like the tournament-low 71 she fired at the Shamrock Invitational. The only rookie to compete in every tournament last season, Oldenkamp has earned a reputation as a closer, racing up the leaderboard with some impressively low final rounds. Misha Harvey will be looking to build upon a strong rookie season that saw her impress despite working through some swing changes. She opened her career with a 10th-place effort at the Draper Valley Invitational (firing a 75) and led the team in stroke average during the fall. Leading the Tribe in three of the five fall tournaments, she never got on track in the spring, but with her great accuracy and swing changes sorted out, she should be one of the team’s top golfers. Marissa Sprick qualified for four tournaments in a solid debut for the Green and Gold, and will try and build upon that experience. Kara Siford made great strides in the spring, and will look to gain more tournament experience after only competing at the W&M Invitational last year. Another of the team’s hardest workers, like Jinphiphadhana, she has the fundamentals to break out and be a force on the team. Seniors Sayde Murray played brilliantly last season under the pressure of being a co-captain and is one of the few veterans on the team. An accurate player and good ballstriker, Murray impressed with a career year highlighted by a 75 to open the Shamrock Invitational and built confidence in the spring which should carry into this season. Pantipa Jinphiphadhana broke through to qualify for the travel squad at the end of last season and played well in tournaments. She has added some length to her game and has worked hard to develop her overall skills. Gwen Brink returns from a season abroad ready to make a big impact. A strong putter, Lee competed extensively on both the American Junior Golf Association and International Junior Golf Tour spring/summer circuits. Ellie Costello brings a strong record of success in high school competition to the Tribe. A two-time Illinois state finalist and two-time conference champion for Loyola Academy, Costello also won a national qualifier on the AJGA tour in 2005. As strong in the classroom as she is on the links, Costello has recieved multiple academic awards, including being named to the allacademic state and conference teams, the national honor roll, and was recognized as a national scholar-athlete by the US Army Reserves. Schedule The fall season was highlighted by the College’s win in its own Tribe Classic, the first team victory since 1992 and the lowest single-round team score in history (299). Murray won the individual medal on the third play off hole, making a ten foot birdie putt while her opponent missed her own 15 footer. The Tribe also led after the first day of the TPC Invitational at the end of the fall before settling back on the second day and finishing third in the nine-team event. The season opened with a fourth-place showing at the Marshall Invitational, where freshman Lee finished sixth, only nine shots out of the lead. Murray led the team at the Bay Tree Invitational, tying for 21st at +13 as the team finished 11th. Following the win in the Tribe Classic, the team traveled to State College, PA to finish 13th in the Nittany Lion Invite, led by Oldenkamp (+19). Murray finished tied for 19th at the Ross Resorts Invitational to lead the Tribe to finish at 11th, before the team closed out the fall at the TPC Invitational in Virginia Beach, led to third place by Harvey’s ninth-place showing (+11). The Tribe heads to the southwest to open the spring, playing in Phoenix, Arizona from March 6-8 at the Bobcat Desert Classic. A twoweek break ensues, before the women host the William and Mary Invitational at Ford’s Colony, March 25th and 26th. April 8th and 9th find the College making its final tune-up before the conference championship, taking on James Madison and a host of other schools in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at the Bonnie Hoover Invitational. The Colonial Athletic Association Championship is being held this year at Pinehurst Resort, in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The women will be playing from April 14th to 16th on the No. 6 course, which was originally deisgned by George and Tom Fazio in 1979 and re-modeled by Tom Fazio in 2005. www.TribeAthletics.com Women’s Athlete Profiles Gwen Brink Senior Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida The Bolles School 2004-05 Personal Born June 29, 1987 in Park Ridge, Illinois ... Driscoll’s tenure has seen a wealth of improvements across the board in the W&M athletics department, from new facilities to increased fundraising for the Tribe. In addition, the Tribe has reached all-time highs in the annual Director’s Cup rankings that summarize excellence in all sports. Upon the death of legendary Tribe athletics director John Randolph, W&M president Timothy J. Sullivan chose Driscoll to be the new leader of the department, saying “Terry brings outstanding management and leadership skills to the position.” Barbara Blosser Senior Executive Associate AD After serving 12 years as the College’s associate athletics director, Barbara Blosser was promoted to her current position of senior executive associate athletic director in April of 2004. Blosser started her career at William and Mary as the head women’s basketball coach in 1978 and guided the Tribe Since Driscoll took over as athletics director, he has overseen the construction of more than $6 million in facilities, including the new Plumeri Park (baseball), Albert-Daly Field (soccer, lacrosse) and the Busch Courts (tennis). Driscoll has also increased the annual fundraising totals for noncapital projects from $1.36 million in 1995 to around $2.7 million currently. He also has served on numerous conference and NCAA committees, including a stint as president of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference. The Tribe has also had outstanding success across the board since Driscoll came to Williamsburg. In 2002-03, W&M had a school-record 10 teams compete in the NCAA Tournament. Four teams won conference titles, while six were in the top 25 at the end of their respective seasons. One of the department’s goals each year is to finish in the top 100 in the annual Director’s Cup rankings, and that has happened in all but one of the years that Driscoll has been the AD, with a high ranking of 42 occurring in 1997. In addition, W&M had captured 81 CAA Championships coming into the 2005-06 school year, by far the highest total among all conference schools. Driscoll’s leadership skills were developed in his collegiate years. As a student-athlete at Boston College, Driscoll captained the basketball team to the National Invitation Tournament championship game as a senior, and was named the tournament MVP. In addition to being named an All-American, his success in the classroom with a major in biology garnered him an Academic All-America honor. After graduating from BC, he was the fourth pick of the NBA Draft, selected by the Detroit Pistons, just three picks after the Milwaukee Bucks chose UCLA’s Lew Alcindor, later to be known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Driscoll chose to play a year in Italy first, but then returned to the U.S. to play for the Pistons, Washington Bullets and Milwaukee Bucks before going back to Italy as a player and coach until 1980. Driscoll then entered the corporate world in 1980, working for Kazmaier Associates, Inc., an international sporting goods sales and sports marketing firm. After Kazmaier purchased Bike Athletic in 1986, KSG Inc. was formed with the objective of becoming the first, and only, national sales agency in the sporting goods industry. By 1987, Driscoll was president of the company and had expanded the agency to all 50 states just two years later. In early 1990, Driscoll’s contribution to a marketing research project for the NCAA was the initial step moving him from product marketing and sales to sports marketing and management. The result of the project was a joint venture between Kazmaier Associates and Host Communication - with Driscoll being named managing director and chief operating officer of NCAA International. In 1993, Driscoll diversified his experience in the athletic world by working as the executive director of the 1994 World Cup site in Boston. In September of that year, Driscoll was again enlisted to launch a new business, Eagle International Group, an event management and services company. As vice president, Driscoll worked with Hawaii Pacific Sports as well as organizing the Women’s World Volleyball Grand Prix, a five-week competition in Honolulu. Driscoll resides in Williamsburg with his wife, Susan. The couple has two children - Keith, 30, a 1997 graduate of Holy Cross and Leslie, 26, a 2001 graduate of William and Mary. to a VAIAW crown in her first season with a schoolrecord 16 wins (16-13). Her 1980 Tribe team (1114) placed third, while the 1981 squad (16-16) was VAIAW runner-up. She was also at the helm during the 1984-85 season when William and Mary made the jump to NCAA Division I. Overall, she finished her coaching career with 115 wins, 84 of which came at William and Mary. When the College’s men’s and women’s athletic programs merged in May of 1986, she moved to administration, first serving as the Assistant to the Associate Athletics Director. Over the past 16 years, her administrative responsibilities at W&M have included the monitoring of financial aid matters, coordinating the scheduling of athletic facilities, supervision of coaches and staff and, currently, serving as the person primarily responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of the department. From October 1992 to June 1993 and August 1995 to July 1996, Blosser also served as acting athletics director in an interim capacity. For her efforts, she was named the first recipient of the John Randolph Inspiration Award. Blosser has served on various committees such as the NCAA Strategic Planning Committee and the Colonial Athletic Association Competition Committee. Blosser began her coaching career at the helm of the women’s basketball program at Ashland College in Ohio. During two seasons there, she led the Eagles to successive 15-7 and 16-8 ledgers. Her 1977 squad won the AIAW Region V Championship, while her 1978 team took the OAISW Small College title. A former three-sport standout at Ohio State, Blosser graduated Cum Laude in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. At OSU, she was selected to both Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board. She competed in basketball, field hockey and tennis and captained both the basketball and field hockey squads her senior year. She went on to earn her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1978. In 1993, she was selected as a member of the first class of women inducted to the Ohio State University Athletic Hall of Fame. 16 • 2005-06 William and Mary Men’s Golf Cross Country www.TribeAthletics.com Athletic Excellence The 2004-05 season was another outstanding year for W&M athletics, as the Tribe added five CAA titles to push its conferenceleading total to 81, 30 more than the next closest competitor. Seven teams competed in their respective NCAA Championships, highlighted by the football teamʼs appearance in the I-AA semifinals. It has become typical for W&M to win at least five conference championships and send seven or more teams to the NCAA Championship each season. Each year the goal of the athletics department is to finish in the top-100 nationally in the NACDA Directorsʼ Cup standings and in recent years W&M has far exceeded that standard. In 2004-2005, the College finished 76th, and was the highest-ranked team in the CAA and was third among all schools in the state of Virginia, making this the ninth time in the 12-year history of the Directorsʼ Cup that the College has finished both in the top four in the state of Virginia and first or second in the CAA. William and Mary fields Division I teams for both men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. There are also field hockey, lacrosse and volleyball squads for women of the College, while there are two additional sports (baseball and football) for men. www.TribeAthletics.com Academic Success The Tribeʼs athletic accomplishments do not come at the expense of its studentsʼ academic responsibilities, as W&M has produced 36 Academic All-Americans since 1992. In the NCAAʼs inaugural Academic Progress Rate scores for all Division I institutions, William and Mary once again excelled in its mission of fostering true student-athletes. The College boasted the fourth-best APR score (992) among 328 active and provisional institutions, and W&M leads all programs that offer performance-based grants and financial aid to scholar-athletes. Additionally, W&M had four student-athletes recognized as CAA Scholar-Athletes of the Year in 2004-2005: Pat Comstock (Menʼs Cross Country), Megan Bishop (Womenʼs Cross Country), Keith Bechtol (Menʼs Track and Field) and Lena Sherbakov (Womenʼs Tennis). 2005-06 William and Mary Golf • 17 McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center Albert-Daly Field Busch Field • Home of the Tribeʼs field hockey team • Made possible by a generous grant from the Anheuser-Busch Corporation • Playing surface is a unique combination of a poured pad with Astroturf playing surface • Seats over 2,200 • State-of-the-art computerized lighting and an elevated press box • Home of the Tribe menʼs and womenʼs soccer and lacrosse teams • Made possible by a generous grant from Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ukrop • Natural grass playing surface • Named after longtime Tribe soccer coaches Al Albert and John Daly • Home of the Tribeʼs tennis teams • Six indoor courts • Houses the ITA Womenʼs Tennis Hall of Fame • Mezzanine and stadium seating areas • Built with a gift from W&M graduate Mark McCormack and his wife Betsy Nagelsen • State-of-the-art lighting and scoreboard Busch Courts • Home of the Tribe tennis teams for the outdoor season • Eight individual hard court surfaces • Features California Corners, a unique design that includes quarter fences that run along the sidelines to allow uninterrupted play • Stadium seating for approximately 500 • State of the art lighting for night matches Plumeri Park • Home of the Tribe baseball program • Made possible by a generous grant from Joe Plumeri • Seating for over 1,000 • Indoor and outdoor batting cages • Lighting for night games • Locker room, box seats and concessions Zable Stadium • Home of the Tribeʼs football and track and field teams • Campus landmark since 1935 • Seating for more than 12,000 • Permanent lighting will be installed in time for the 2005 football season • Brand new state-of-the-art track around the field scheduled for completion in spring 2006 • Joseph Montgomery football practice facility is located adjacent to the stadium 18 • 2005-06 William and Mary Golf William and Mary Hall • Home of the Tribeʼs basketball, gymnastics and volleyball teams • Seats over 8,500 • Three-level building includes 12 locker room areas, a spacious training room, 5,000 square foot weight room and gymnastics training center • The concourse and lower levels house administrative and coaching staff offices www.TribeAthletics.com Sports Psychology Goals We take pride in the many achievements of William and Mary athletes, both in the classroom and on the playing field. These support services and many others are in place to help each studentathlete achieve their goals. It is our hope that at the completion of their undergraduate career they can reflect upon: 1. An academic experience that prepared them for a successful career. 2. An athletic challenge that brought many rewards. 3. A feeling of loyalty and pride in identifying themselves as a varsity athlete with a degree from The College of William and Mary. Compliance and Academic Support As members of the Colonial Athletic Association and NCAA Division I, the College is committed to full compliance with all NCAA and conference regulations. The department has a fulltime Director of Compliance committed to assisting students, staff and coaches through education and monitoring of compliance issues. All entering students are assigned to a faculty academic advisor assigned by the director of Academic Advising. Students remain with this advisor until their sophomore year at which time they select a faculty advisor in their chosen major. Within the athletic department, the Academic Support Coordinator is a valuable resource for student-athletes serving in a liaison role with the various student service offices throughout the campus community. The College has offices for Volunteer Services, Career Services, a Writing Resource Center and Oral Communication Studio, to name a few. The department offers a variety of study, life and career building skills programs, but holds firm to the concept of selfdetermination—each student must take responsibility for his or her collegiate experience. Our goal is to assure that there is a support system in place to assist students to make positive and informed decisions. The athletic department has on staff a sports psychologist, who holds a Ph.D. in sports psychology. All consultations are confidential and all student-athletes, teams or coaches are welcome regardless of the issues they wish to discuss. Consultation is available for sport psychology education, performance enhancement skills training, strategies for dealing with stress or injury, or for personal issues that may affect performance. The sports psychology consultant is considered a member of the Counseling Center and refers individuals to the Center when appropriate. Strength, Speed and Conditioning Tribe athletics is very proud of the Joseph W. Montgomery Strength Training Center, a 5,000 square foot weight training facility. Under the guidance of the Head and Assistant Strength Coach each sport is provided with a program designed to enhance individual strength and flexibility development specific to the skills and movements required for their sport. Individuals are educated on proper lifting techniques and workouts are monitored to assure safety at all times. Sports Medicine The Division of Sports Medicine provides a comprehensive health care program for the department of intercollegiate athletics. The staff consists of a team physician, seven full time certified athletic trainers, two graduate assistant athletic trainers and medical specialists from the local community. The team physician has overall responsibility for supervision of the sports medicine program.
